For over 20 years, the Schmid Training Course (STC) has offered unique opportunities for marine biology students from European universities to learn about marine model organisms. While the topics of the course have continuously changed over the years with the advent of new research techniques and discoveries, the pedagogical approach has remained largely the same - a combination of lectures, lab practicals, and field excursions. Several life science researchers, who have taught in the STC for many years, sought to bring the course's pedagogical approach into the 21st century, and with the support of Erasmus+ Programme of the European Community funding, the Digital Marine project was developed. Digital Marine began in 2018 as an international partnership between the six research centers from which the STC instructors hail, and its main objective was to introduce a flipped, blended approach to learning and teaching with respect to established and emerging marine biological model systems. The placozoan Trichoplax adhaerens has been bridging gaps between research disciplines like no other animal. As outlined in part 1, placozoans have been subject of hot evolutionary debates and placozoans have challenged some fundamental evolutionary concepts. The placozoan Trichoplax adhaerens is a tiny hairy plate and more simply organized than any other living metazoan. After its original description by F.E. Schulze in 1883, it attracted attention as a potential model for the ancestral state of metazoan organization, the "Urmetazoon". Trichoplax lacks any kind of symmetry, organs, nerve cells, muscle cells, basal lamina, and extracellular matrix. Furthermore, the placozoan genome is the smallest (not secondarily reduced) genome of all metazoan genomes. It harbors a remarkably rich diversity of genes and has been considered the best living surrogate for a metazoan ancestor genome. The phylum Placozoa presently harbors three formally described species, while several dozen "cryptic" species are yet awaiting their description. The phylogenetic position of placozoans has recently become a contested arena for modern phylogenetic analyses and view-driven claims. The morphology and ultrastructure of 10 clonal placozoan lineages were studied. We scored several morphological characters at a cellular and intracellular level and identified a number of morphological differences among clones. Some differences appear clone specific and allow recognizing five distinct lineages based on morphological criteria only. These data will be crucial for a yet to be established placozoan systematics. Furthermore, we here describe three new diagnostic morphological characters for Placozoa: a new structure in the upper epithelium, called "concave disc," two distinct subpopulations of fiber cells, and especially small cells in the body margin. Besides the fiber cells appear to be arranged in several layers forming a complex, three-dimensional net not previously described. Metazoa are one of the great monophyletic groups of organisms. They comprise several major groups of organisms readily recognizable based on their anatomy. These major groups include the Bilateria (animals with bilateral symmetry), Cnidaria (jellyfish, corals and other closely related animals), Porifera (sponges), Ctenophores (comb jellies) and a phylum currently made up of a single species, the Placozoa. Attempts to systematize the relationships of these major groups as well as to determine relationships within the groups have been made for nearly two centuries. Many of the attempts have led to frustration, because of a lack of resolution between and within groups. Other attempts have led to "a new animal phylogeny". Now, a study by Dunn et al., using the expresssed sequence tag (EST) approach to obtaining high-throughput large phylogenetic matrices, presents an "even newer" animal phylogeny. There are two major aspects of this study that should be of interest to the general biological community. First, the methods used by the authors to generate their phylogenetic hypotheses call for close examination. Second, the relationships of animal taxa in their resultant trees also prompt further discussion.

Trichoplax adhaerens is more simply organized than any other living metazoan. This tiny marine animal looks like a irregular "hairy plate" ("tricho plax") with a simple upper and lower epithelium and some loose cells in between. After its original description by F.E. Schulze 1883, it attracted particular attention as a potential candidate representing the basic and ancestral state of metazoan organization. The lack of any kind of symmetry, organs, nerve cells, muscle cells, basal lamina and extracellular matrix originally left little doubt about the basal position of T. adhaerens. Nevertheless, the interest of zoologists and evolutionary biologists suddenly vanished for more than half a century when Trichoplax was claimed to be an aberrant hydrozoan planula larva. Recently, Trichoplax has been rediscovered as a key species for unraveling early metazoan evolution. For example, research on regulatory genes and whole genome sequencing promise insights into the genetics underlying the origin and development of basal metazoan phyla. Changes in body morphology during growth and reproduction in the hydromedusa Eleutheria dichotoma are described in terms of variations in eight different characters: umbrella diameter, total surface area, tentacle area, umbrella area, tentacle knob diameter, number of embryos, and diameter and area of buds. Sexually (sex) and vegetatively (veg) reproducing medusae differ significantly in their body morphometrics. Statistically significant allometric relations exist between umbrella diameter and (1) central area (sex and veg); (2) tentacle area (veg); (3) total area (veg); (4) tentacle knob diameter (veg); (5) bud diameter; and (6) number of embryos. A significant correlation between umbrella diameter and area is also found in undetached buds. During sexual reproduction, umbrella area shows positive allometry and loses its correlations to total area, tentacle area, and tentacle knob diameter. Linear and nonlinear bivariate allometric coefficients allow estimation of total body size from only one or two easily measurable attributes, e.g., umbrella and tentacle knob diameter. Curve fitting by the classic allometric equation (y = bx c ) is only negligibly worse than that obtained with a "full" equation (y = a + c ), and statistical confidence is better. Chemical analyses for carbon and nitrogen content allow estimation of biomass from the projection area of the body surface. The relation factors are 1.06 μgC mm -2 (sex) and 1.14 μgC mm -2 (veg) for carbon and 0.293 μgN mm -2 (sex) and 0.287 μgN mm -2 (veg) for nitrogen. The C:N ratios are 3.6 and 4.0 for sexual and vegetative medusae, respectively.
