Abstract Patagonia is an understudied area, especially when it comes to population genomic studies with relevance to fishery management. However, the dynamic and heterogeneous landscape in this area can harbor an important but cryptic genetic population structure. Once such information is revealed, it can be integrated into the management of infrequently investigated species. Eleginops maclovinus is a protandrous hermaphrodite species with economic importance for local communities that are currently managed as a single genetic unit. In this study, we sampled five locations distributed across a salinity cline from Northern Patagonia to investigate the genetic population structure of E. maclovinus. We used restriction site‐associated DNA (RAD) sequencing and outlier tests to obtain neutral and adaptive loci, using FST and GEA approaches. We identified a spatial pattern of structuration with gene flow and spatial selection by environmental association. Neutral and adaptive loci showed two and three genetic groups, respectively. The effective population sizes estimated ranged from 572 (Chepu) to 14,454 (Chaitén) and were influenced more by locality than by salinity cline. We found loci putatively associated with salinity suggesting that salinity may act as a selective driver in E. maclovinus populations. These results suggest a complex interaction between genetic drift, gene flow, and natural selection in this area. Our findings also suggest several evolutionary significant units in this area, and the information should be integrated into the management of this species. We discussed the significance of these results for fishery management and suggest future directions to improve our understanding of how E. maclovinus has adapted to the dynamic waters of Northern Patagonia.

Background: We investigated both the efficacy and the sub-chronic toxicity of Tephrosia toxicaria Pers. in the zymosan-induced temporomandibular joint (TMJ) inflammatory hypernociception in rats evaluating the possible role of heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1)., Methods: Rats were pretreated with T. toxicaria (0.2, 2.0 or 20 mg/kg) 60 min before the intra-articular injection of zymosan (2 mg, 40 μL) in the left TMJ. In another series of experiments, rats were treated with ZnPP-IX (3 mg/kg), a specific HO-1 inhibitor, before T. toxicaria (20 mg/kg). Von Frey test was used to evaluate inflammatory hypernociception (g) 4 h after zymosan injection. Six hours after zymosan injection, the synovial lavage was collected for total cell count and myeloperoxidase (MPO) activity, and joint tissue for histopathological analysis and immunohistochemistry for HO-1. To evaluate the sub-chronic toxicity, mice received T. toxicaria (20 mg/kg) or saline once a day for 14 days to analyse body mass, organ weight and biochemical parameters., Results: T. toxicaria partially reversed the zymosan-induced head withdrawal threshold, the number of cells and the MPO activity. T. toxicaria reduced the inflammatory cell influx in the synovial membrane. TMJ immunohistochemical analyses treated with T. toxicaria showed increased HO-1 expression. These effects of T. toxicaria were not observed in the presence of ZnPP-IX. T. toxicaria treatment for 14 days did not show significant signs of toxicity when administrated to mice., Conclusions: T. toxicaria did not produce any signs of toxicity and effectively decreased zymosan-induced TMJ inflammatory hypernociception dependent, at least in part, upon the HO-1 pathway integrity., (© 2014 European Pain Federation - EFIC®)

Background: Many studies have tried to identify prognostic factors to guide the selection of patients at high risk for metastases in penile carcinoma. The authors evaluated human papillomavirus (HPV) status with respect to clinical features, incidence of metastases, and prognosis of penile carcinoma., Methods: Human papillomavirus DNA was detected using the polymerase chain reaction on paraffin embedded material from 82 patients with penile carcinoma. The following variables were recorded: age, marital status, clinical staging, tumor surgery extension, histologic grade, tumor thickness, lymphatic and venous embolization, corpora cavernosa and corpus spongiosum infiltration, urethral infiltration, mononuclear and eosinophilic infiltrate, and lymph node spread. Follow-up ranged from 0.1 to 453 months., Results: Human papillomavirus DNA was detected in 30.5% (25 of 82) of samples. HPV-16 was the most frequent type detected (13 of 25, 52%). Human papillomavirus DNA positive tumors had less lymphatic embolization by neoplastic cells than HPV negative ones (P = 0.007). The logistic regression revealed that only lymphatic embolization was related to HPV status. There was no difference, however, between HPV DNA negative and HPV DNA positive patients according to presence of lymph node metastases (P = 0.386). No difference was found in the 10-year survival rate (68.4% vs. 69.1%; P = 0.830) between the two groups., Conclusions: These data suggest that HPV status does not influence prognosis in invasive penile carcinoma., (Copyright 2001 American Cancer Society.)

Changes in the world of work are posing major challenges to workers, institutions, and society. Not only has the nature of work been affected by the changing work environment, increased global competition, and technological revolutions, but the characteristics of the workforce can only be described as revolutionary. Societal forces have resulted in what the authors call the "changing complexion of the workforce", the "feminization of the workforce", and the "graying of the workforce". Traditional theories of work motivation, employer-employee relations, and the role of psychology must also evolve to accommodate this challenge. The collision of these structural and demographic forces has resulted in major upheaval in society and the world of work. The authors discuss implications of these changes and urge psychologists to use their accumulated knowledge and wisdom to positively impact social policy for the greater good of people, institutions, and society.

The effect of a wide range of daily vitamin C intake (350-2250 mg, mean 975 mg) on the serum and urine vitamin C levels was studied in 20 adult hospitalized patients receiving total parenteral nutrition for a period greater than 15 days. Serum vitamin C levels increased with vitamin C administration, but remained within the normal range. Urine vitamin C levels were above normal during total parenteral nutrition in all but one patient. A positive vitamin C "balance" was achieved in all patients. The vitamin C intake positively correlated with the vitamin C urine concentration and vitamin C "balance." Maximal vitamin C retention was 800 mg/day. It is concluded that administration of vitamin C in doses greater than 1000 mg/day is unjustified in those patients receiving total parenteral nutrition who are not hypermetabolic.
