An integrated study of the sedimentology, micropalaeontology, mineralogy and geochemistry of glauconites in the Oligocene Maniyara Fort Formation (western Kutch, India), has been undertaken. Authigenic glauconites, mostly of evolved type, formed within a back-barrier lagoonal environment. Foraminifera help constrain the biostratigraphy and along with sedimentological evidence, provide information on the depositional conditions. Glauconite in the Maniyara Fort Formation occurs either as infillings within intra-particle pores of larger foraminifers, or as an altered form of faecal pellets. X-ray diffraction studies reveal the less mature nature of glauconite infillings compared to the glauconite pellets. Electron microprobe investigation confirms a relative enrichment of K2O and total Fe2O3 in the latter. Both varieties of glauconite formed by initial authigenic precipitation of K-poor glauconite and subsequently matured by addition of potassium in the interlayer sites and fixation of total iron in the octahedral sites; calcium, magnesium and aluminum were released from the glauconite structure concomitantly. Alkaline conditions during the entire process of glauconite formation did not allow dissolution of foraminiferal tests. Mineralogical and chemical characteristics of the Maniyara Fort Formation glauconites are more similar to deep marine glauconites than those reported from other shallow or marginal marine settings. A low negative cerium anomaly, as well as abundant pyrite, suggests formation of glauconite in sub-oxic micro-environments, created by decay of organic matter associated with foraminiferal chambers and faecal pellets. This paper will focus on a novel class of inorganic compounds that we term as molecular minerals™ (MMs). MMs are clusters of ceramic fragments encapsulated with organic ligands. These compounds can be crystallized from solution as molecular single crystals and have well-defined crystal structures that can be described with X-ray diffraction methods. Most importantly, the ceramic clusters are perfectly monodisperse, and conventional synthetic techniques can be applied to facilitate control of size and composition. The organic encapsulate imparts solubility in organic solvents and polymers. More importantly, the solubility is thermodynamically driven to form a single-phase system. Thus, unlike nanoparticles, the stability of clusters in solution is spontaneous rather than kinetically derived. A critical tool for creating MMs is a firm understanding of the fundamental issues governing cluster structure and stability. We have demonstrated a unique synthetic approach to these materials, capable of creating materials with oxo, sulfido, selenido, or tellurido ligands, whose ceramic fragment size can currently be varied from about 0.5 to 2 nm. Both homometallic and heterometallic lanthanide (Ln) complexes incorporating the group 12 metals Zn, Cd, and Hg have been prepared. Relative to prior work on metal organic or organometallic Ln complexes, MMs have unprecedented luminescent properties in terms of emission wavelength, emission intensity, and quantum efficiency. These materials match or exceed the luminescent properties of ceramics, glasses, and nanomaterials, while having the additional advantage of polymer solubility. Solubility facilitates the preparation of transparent molecular mineral nanocomposites that can be fabricated as bulk polymers, fibers, and films.

Summary The homopteran group of polyphagous sucking insect pests causes severe damage to many economically important plants including tobacco. Allium sativum leaf lectin (ASAL), a mannose-binding 25-kDa homodimeric protein, has recently been found to be antagonistic to various sucking insects in the homopteran group through artificial diet bioassay experiments. The present study describes, for the first time, the expression of the ASAL coding sequence under the control of the cauliflower mosaic virus (CaMV) 35S promoter in tobacco by Agrobacterium-mediated transformation technology. Molecular analyses demonstrated the integration of the chimeric ASAL gene in tobacco and its inheritance in the progeny plants. Western blot analysis followed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) determined the level of ASAL expression in different lines to be in the range of approximately 0.68%−2% of total soluble plant protein. An in planta bioassay conducted with Myzus persicae, peach potato aphid (a devastating pest of tobacco and many other important plants), revealed that the percentage of insect survival decreased significantly to 16%−20% in T0 plants and T1 progeny, whilst approximately 75% of insects survived on untransformed tobacco plants after 144 h of incubation. Ligand analyses of insect brush border membrane vesicle receptors and expressed ASAL in transgenic tobacco showed that the expressed ASAL binds to the aphid gut receptor in the same manner as native ASAL, pointing to the fact that ASAL maintains the biochemical characteristics even in the transgenic situation. These findings in a model plant open up the possibility of expressing the novel ASAL gene in a wide range of crop plants susceptible to various sap-sucking insects.

The InsP3 receptor is a ligand-gated channel that releases Ca2+ from intracellular stores in a variety of cell types, including neurons. Genetic studies from vertebrate and invertebrate model systems suggest that coordinated rhythmic motor functions are most susceptible to changes in Ca2+ release from the InsP3 receptor. In many cases, the InsP3 receptor interacts with other signaling mechanisms that control levels of cytosolic Ca2+, suggesting that the maintenance of Ca2+ homeostasis in normal cells could be controlled by the activity of the InsP3R. In support of this idea, recent studies show that altered InsP3 receptor activity can be partially responsible for Ca2+ dyshomeostasis seen in many neurodegenerative conditions. These observations open new avenues for carrying out genetic and drug screens that target InsP3R function in neurodegenerative conditions.

The title compounds are synthesized from mixtures of Sn, M2S (M: K, Rb, Cs), red phosphorus, and S (sealed silica tubes, 900 °C, 72 h, ≈80% yield).

The new semiconducting thiophosphate compounds KZrPS6, RbZrPS6, and CsZrPS6 exhibit red light emission at room temperature. The materials have longer photoluminescence lifetimes than most of the inorganic chalcogenide semiconductors. They can be solution processed into thin films for potential device fabrication.

Zirconium selenophosphate compounds with a unique polar structure show strong second harmonic generation and they dissolve in polar solvent to produce photoluminescent solutions.

Heterometallic clusters containing lanthanides and the group 12 metals can be isolated as crystalline compounds in high yields. These products [(py)8Ln4M2Se6(SePh)4 (Ln = Er, Yb, Lu; M = Cd, Hg)] adopt a double cubane structure with the covalent M occupying an opposing pair of external metal sites. Both Er/M compounds are strongly emissive materials, with emission lifetimes of 1.41 ms (Er/Cd) and 0.71 ms (Er/Hg) and with the Er/Cd radiative quantum efficiency twice that of the Er/Hg compound. Thermal decomposition of the Er/Cd and Yb/Cd compounds at 650 degrees C give the ternary solid-state materials CdLn2Se4.
