Isoselenazolone derivatives have attracted significant research interest because of their potent therapeutic activities and indispensable applications in organic synthesis. Efficient construction of functionalized isoselenazolone scaffolds is still challenging, and thus new synthetic approaches with improved operational simplicity have been of particular interest. In this manuscript, we introduce a rhodium-catalyzed direct selenium annulation by using stable and tractable elemental selenium. A series of benzamides as well as acrylamides were successfully coupled with selenium under mild reaction conditions, and the obtained isoselenazolones could be pivotal synthetic precursors for several organoselenium compounds. Based on the designed control experiments and X-ray absorption spectroscopy measurements, we propose an unprecedented selenation mechanism involving a highly electrophilic Se(IV) species as the reactive selenium donor. The reaction mechanism was further verified by a computational study.

Bioprivileged molecules hold great promise for supplementing petrochemicals in sustainable organic synthesis of a diverse bioactive products library. Secologanin, a biorenewable monoterpenoid glucoside with unique structural elements, is the key precursor for thousands of natural monoterpenoid alkaloids. Inspired by its inherent highly congested functional groups, a secologanin-based diversity-oriented synthesis (DOS) strategy for novel pseudo-natural alkaloids was developed. All the reactive units of secologanin were involved in these operation simplicity protocols under mild reaction conditions, including the one-step enantioselective transformation of exocyclic C8, C8/C11, and C8/C9/C10 as well as the chemoenzymatic manipulation of endocyclic C2/C6 via the attack by various nucleophiles. A combinatory scenario of the aforementioned reactions further provided diverse polycyclic products with multiple chiral centers. Preliminary activity screening of these newly constructed molecules led to the discovery of antimalarial and highly potent neuroprotective skeletons. The application of green biorenewable secologanin in diversity-oriented pseudo-natural monoterpenoid alkaloid synthesis might encourage the pursuit of valuable bioactive frameworks.

By adapting previously reported reaction conditions, [18 F]FMISO was synthesized using a TracerLab FX-FDG module in 31 min from no carrier added [18 F]fluoride in 56% radiochemical yield. A novel and simple purification setup based on disposable cartridges was developed allowing the radiopharmaceutical to be obtained in high radiochemical purity (>99.5%) and with chemical impurities far below the Ph.Eur.'s thresholds. Moreover, the study pinpointed some shortcomings of the high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method reported in the dedicated Ph.Eur's monograph.

Direct enantioselective hydrogenation of unsaturated compounds to generate chiral three‐dimensional motifs is one of the most straightforward and important approaches in synthetic chemistry. We realized the Ru(II)‐NHC‐catalyzed asymmetric hydrogenation of 2‐quinolones under mild reaction conditions. Alkyl‐, aryl‐ and halogen‐substituted optically active dihydro‐2‐quinolones were obtained in high yields with moderate to excellent enantioselectivities. The reaction provides an efficient and atom‐economic pathway to construct simple chiral 3,4‐dihydro‐2‐quinolones. The desired products could be further reduced to tetrahydroquinolines and octahydroquinolones., Ruthenium‐NHC‐catalyzed asymmetric hydrogenation of 2‐quinolones to simple 3,4‐dihydro‐2‐quinolones has been developed with high yields and moderate to excellent enantioselectivities under mild conditions.

In contrast to carbon-substituted isocyanates that are common building blocks, N-substituted isocyanates remain underdeveloped and reports on their N-acyl derivatives (i. e. amido-isocyanates) are exceedingly rare. Herein, amido-isocyanates were investigated in the context of syntheses of aza-tripeptide and hydantoins subunits starting from simple bench-stable precursors. A key finding is that the amido-isocyanate formed in situ cyclized to yield an oxadiazolone, and that under suitable reaction conditions this heterocycle is a traceless blocked (masked) N-isocyanate. Using organic bases as catalysts and upon heating, oxadiazolone formation is observed, and various nucleophiles to provide the desired aza-dipeptides or hydantoins in moderate to high yields. Further support for an amido-isocyanate intermediate was obtained using carboxylic acids as nucleophiles, affording N-acylhydrazide products.

To make crucial prevention, reduce fish losses and minimize the economic damage of diseases on the fish farm owners, a rapid detection of fish pathogens is mandatory. In this study, a loop-mediated isothermal amplification assay combined with hydroxynaphthol blue dye (LAMP-HNB) was developed and used for the rapid detection of Aeromonas salmonicida that caused significant economic losses in fish farming. Firstly, a pair of outer and inner primers specific for conserved fragment of vapA gene in A. salmonicida were designed and synthesized. Secondly, by optimizing the reaction conditions including reaction temperature, time, Mg2+ concentration, dNTP concentration and primer ratio, a LAMP-HNB assay was successfully established for the detection of A. salmoncida. Thirdly, the assay showed good specificity with no false-positive and false-negative results, and good sensitivity with the detection limit of 3.077 × 10-6 ng/μl, which was 102 times more sensitive than the conventional PCR. Finally, the LAMP-HNB assay was validated by the fish samples inoculated with different concentrations of A. salmoncida. This is the first development of rapid visual detection of A. salmonicida based on LAMP-HNB assay, which has great application prospect and market for diagnostic testing, health certification and active surveillance programmers.

Synthetic organic chemistry has witnessed a plethora of functionalization and defunctionalization strategies. In this regard, C-H functionalization has been at the forefront due to the multifarious applications in the development of simple to complex molecular architectures and holds a brilliant prospect in drug development and discovery. Despite been explored tremendously by chemists, this functionalization strategy still enjoys the employment of novel metal catalysts as well metal-free organic ligands. Moreover, the switch to photo- and electrochemistry has widened our understanding of the alternative pathways via which a reaction can proceed and these strategies have garnered prominence when applied to C-H activation. Synthetic chemists have been foraging for new directing groups and templates for the selective activation of C-H bonds from a myriad of carbon-hydrogen bonds in aromatic as well as aliphatic systems. As a matter of fact, by varying the templates and directing groups, scientists found the answer to the challenge of distal C-H bond activation which remained an obstacle for a very long time. These templates have been frequently harnessed for selectively activating C-H bonds of natural products, drugs, and macromolecules decorated with multiple C-H bonds. This itself was a challenge before the commencement of this field as functionalization of a site other than the targeted site could modify and hamper the biological activity of the pharmacophore. Total synthesis and pharmacophore development often faces the difficulty of superfluous reaction steps towards selective functionalization. This obstacle has been solved by late-stage functionalization simply by harnessing C-H bond activation. Moreover, green chemistry and metal-free reaction conditions have seen light in the past few decades due to the rising concern about environmental issues. Therefore, metal-free catalysts or the usage of non-toxic metals have been recently showcased in a number of elegant works. Also, research groups across the world are developing rational strategies for directing group free or non-directed protocols that are just guided by ligands. This review encapsulates the research works pertinent to C-H bond activation and discusses the science devoted to it at the fundamental level. This review gives the readers a broad understanding of how these strategies work, the execution of various metal catalysts, and directing groups. This not only helps a budding scientist towards the commencement of his/her research but also helps a matured mind searching out for selective functionalization. A detailed picture of this field and its progress with time has been portrayed in lucid scientific language with a motive to inculcate and educate scientific minds about this beautiful strategy with an overview of the most relevant and significant works of this era. The unique trait of this review is the detailed description and classification of various directing groups and their utility over a wide substrate scope. This allows an experimental chemist to understand the applicability of this domain and employ it over any targeted substrate.

Global warming caused by the rapid increase in atmospheric CO2 concentration is regarded as one of the most serious problems faced by human being. Electrochemical CO2 reduction (ECR) is one promising strategy that can fix CO2 in a mild and clean manner combined with sustainable energies. However, the ECR performance is highly dependent on the catalysis system because of the difficulty in CO2 activation, low mass transfer, poor product selectivity, and competitive hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The binding strength of electrocatalysts toward carbon intermediates is the crucial factor for ECR performance. Furthermore, the reaction conditions and the configurations of devices are also of significance for ECR efficiencies. Here, we briefly reviewed the effects of electrocatalyst materials, as well as the reaction conditions, coupled anodic reactions, and devices on the ECR. Moreover, challenges and some perspectives for large‐scale applications are included.

Zirconium-based metal-organic framework materials (Zr-MOFs) have more practical usage over most conventional benchmark porous materials and even many other MOFs due to the excellent structural stability, rich coordination forms, and various active sites. However, their mass-production and application are restricted by the high-cost raw materials, complex synthesis procedures, harsh reaction conditions, and unexpected environmental impact. Based on the principles of "Green Chemistry", considerable efforts have been done for breaking through the limitations, and significant progress has been made in the sustainable synthesis of Zr-MOFs over the past decade. In this review, the advancements of green raw materials and green synthesis methods in the synthesis of Zr-MOFs are reviewed, along with the corresponding drawbacks. The challenges and prospects are discussed and outlooked, expecting to provide guidance for the acceleration of the industrialization and commercialization of Zr-MOFs.

The morphinans are an important class of structurally fascinating and physiologically important natural products as exemplified by the famous opium alkaloids of the morphine family. Although this class of secondary metabolites from the juice of the opium poppy capsule was already used for medicinal purposes thousands of years ago, chemical modifications are still being applied to the core structure today in order to achieve the most specific effect on the various receptor subtypes possible with the fewest possible side effects. The unusual architecture of the morphinan core has also proven to be a highly challenging target for total synthesis. This review highlights electrosynthetic approaches towards natural and semisynthetic morphinan alkaloids. The historical progress in applying anodic aryl-aryl couplings to the construction of the morphinan framework is described in chronological order while particular benefits and challenges concerning the electrochemical transformations are grouped together, including the influence of substitution patterns, protecting groups, and reaction conditions.

International audience; New titanium complexes of general formula [Ti(OR)2(OiPr)2], containing functionalized alkoxido ligands, were developed for the selective catalytic dimerization of ethylene to 1-butene using a combined High Throughput Screening (HTS) / Design of Experiment (DoE) approach. First, a library of 19 ligands was elaborated and a primary screening spotted the phosphorus-functionalized alkoxido ligands as most promising. A second, more focused library containing 8 alkoxidophosphane ligands was then developed. A longer linear spacer between the alkoxido and the phosphorus functions, as in [Ti(19)2(OiPr)2], was found beneficial for this catalytic reaction. After identification of the best co-catalyst (AlEt3) and co-ligand (OnBu), final optimization of the reaction conditions was performed using a design of experiments (DoE) approach. The complex [Ti(19)2(OnBu)2] was shown to selectively dimerize ethylene in 1-butene (C4(α)=93 % (99+%)) at 30 bar C2H4 and 55 °C with AlEt3 as co-catalyst, resulting in very high activity and selectivity for a molecular titanium catalyst (13000 g gTi−1 h−1, 93 % 1-butene).

A set of new guaianolide derivatives (1–9) was obtained from ludartin, achalensolide, and 11,13-dihydroachalensolide by application of catalytic nitrene transfer reactions. Intermolecular nitrene C(sp3)−H insertions led to the amination of C-1, C-2, and C-10 positions, while alkene aziridination was also observed under these reaction conditions. The antiproliferative activity of natural compounds and their derivatives was evaluated against a panel of human solid tumor cell lines. The results show that an increase in the biological activity was observed following amination at the C-2 position of Ludartin, thereby demonstrating the interest in late-stage C−H amination to improve the bioactivity of natural products. Non-noble metal-based hydrogenation catalysts have limited practical applications because they exhibit low activity, require harsh reaction conditions, and are unstable in air. To overcome these limitations, herein we propose the alloying of non-noble metal nanoparticles with phosphorus as a promising strategy for developing smart catalysts that exhibit both excellent activity and air stability. We synthesized a novel nickel phosphide nanoalloy (nano-Ni2 P) with coordinatively unsaturated Ni active sites. Unlike conventional air-unstable non-noble metal catalysts, nano-Ni2 P retained its metallic nature in air, and exhibited a high activity for the hydrogenation of various substrates with polar functional groups, such as aldehydes, ketones, nitriles, and nitroarenes to the desired products in excellent yields in water. Furthermore, the used nano-Ni2 P catalyst was easy to handle in air and could be reused without pretreatment, providing a simple and clean catalyst system for general hydrogenation reactions.

As an approach towards unraveling the nitrogenase mechanism, we have studied the binding of CO to the active‐site FeMo‐cofactor. CO is not only an inhibitor of nitrogenase, but it is also a substrate, undergoing reduction to hydrocarbons (Fischer–Tropsch‐type chemistry). The C−C bond forming capabilities of nitrogenase suggest that multiple CO or CO‐derived ligands bind to the active site. Herein, we report a crystal structure with two CO ligands coordinated to the FeMo‐cofactor of the molybdenum nitrogenase at 1.33 Å resolution. In addition to the previously observed bridging CO ligand between Fe2 and Fe6 of the FeMo‐cofactor, a new ligand binding mode is revealed through a second CO ligand coordinated terminally to Fe6. While the relevance of this state to nitrogenase‐catalyzed reactions remains to be established, it highlights the privileged roles for Fe2 and Fe6 in ligand binding, with multiple coordination modes available depending on the ligand and reaction conditions., Besides reducing dinitrogen, nitrogenases reduce CO to hydrocarbons, mediating C−C bond formation between multiple CO‐derived ligands. To shed light on how multiple C‐based ligands bind to the active site, we report a 1.33 Å resolution crystal structure of two CO ligands coordinated to the FeMo‐cofactor of molybdenum nitrogenase (see picture). The second CO ligand is coordinated to Fe6 in a previously unreported ligand binding mode.

Disclosed here is a palladium-catalyzed direct [4+1] spiroannulation of ortho-C-H bonds of naphthols with cyclic diaryliodonium salts to construct spirofluorenyl naphthalenones (SFNP) under mild reaction conditions. This spiroannulation directly transforms the hydroxy group into a carbonyl group, and also tolerates reactive functional groups such as the halo groups, which provide an opportunity to rapidly assemble structurally new thermally activated delayed fluorescent (TADF) materials that feature a carbonyl group with an adjacent spirofluorenyl unit as the acceptor. As an illustrated example, the OLED device utilizing the assembled DMAC-SFNP as the host material exhibits a low turn-on voltage of 2.5 V and an ultra-high external quantum efficiency of 32.2 %. This work provides inspiration for structurally new TADF materials, and also displays the potential of C-H activation as a synthetic strategy for the innovation of optoelectronic materials.

A metal‐free oxidative [3+1+1] convergent domino annulation has been developed for the synthesis of 2,4,5‐trisubstituted oxazoles. Compared with existing methods, this method has the advantages of wide substrate scope, mild reaction conditions, and obtaining raw materials.

In the modern era, growing number of indoor plants for various purposes, such as vegetation, flowering, and decorations, has increased over the traditional follow-up trends for plantation. However, the indoor plantation requires different parameters for their growth; among these, light plays a significant role. In order to control the growth of plants using light-emitting diodes, Mn-doped oxide phosphors have emerged as promising candidates due to their broad and intense emission bands in the red and far-red spectral range. In this review article, recent progress on Mn-doped oxides for indoor plant growth has been reviewed. This review article is mainly divided into three parts. In the first part, different reaction conditions for the synthesis of Mn-doped oxide phosphors are compared. In the second part, the luminescent and other photometric parameters of these are discussed. The influence of different co-dopants on the luminescent characteristics has been elucidated in detail. The third part discusses the properties of light-emitting diodes fabricated using these phosphors for plant growth. The present review article elucidates the synthesis parameters, luminescent properties, and light-emitting diodes fabricated using Mn-doped oxide materials for plant growth applications.

Electrochemical organic synthesis has attracted increasing attentions as a sustainable and versatile synthetic platform. Quantitative assessment of the electro-organic reactions, including reaction thermodynamics, electro-kinetics, and coupled chemical processes, can lead to effective analytical tool to guide their future design. Herein, we demonstrate that electrochemical parameters such as onset potential, Tafel slope, and effective voltage can be utilized as electro-descriptors for the evaluation of reaction conditions and prediction of reactivities (yields). An "electro-descriptor-diagram" is generated, where reactive and non-reactive conditions/substances show distinct boundary. Successful predictions of reaction outcomes have been demonstrated using electro-descriptor diagram, or from machine learning algorithms with experimentally-derived electro-descriptors. This method represents a promising tool for data-acquisition, reaction prediction, mechanistic investigation, and high-throughput screening for general organic electro-synthesis.

α-Haloboronates are useful organic synthons that can be converted to a diverse array of α-substituted alkyl borons. Methods to α-haloboronates are limiting and often suffer from harsh reaction conditions. Reported herein is a photochemical radical C-H halogenation of benzyl N-methyliminodiacetyl (MIDA) boronates. Fluorination, chlorination, and bromination reactions were effective by using this protocol. Upon reaction with different nucleophiles, the C-Br bond in the brominated product could be readily transformed to a series of C-C, C-O, C-N, C-S, C-P, and C-I bonds, some of which are difficult to forge with α-halo sp2 -B boronate esters. An activation effect of B(MIDA) moiety was found.

C-H functionalization is one of the most convenient and powerful tools in the arsenal of modern chemistry, deservedly nominated as the "Holy Grail" of organic synthesis. A frequent disadvantage of this method is the need for harsh reaction conditions to carry out transformations of inert C-H bonds, which limits the possibility of its use for modifying less stable substrates. Biomass-derived furan platform chemicals, which have a relatively unstable aromatic furan core and highly reactive side chain substituents, are extremely promising and valuable organic molecules that are currently widely used in a variety of research and industrial fields. The high sensitivity of furan derivatives to acids, strong oxidants, and high temperatures significantly limits the use of classical methods of C-H functionalization for their modification. New methods of catalytic functionalization of non-reactive furan cores are urgently required to obtain a new generation of materials with controlled properties and potentially bioactive substances.

Our group has previously reported that 3,3-difluoroxindole (HOFox) is able to mediate glycosylations via intermediacy of OFox imidates. Thioglycoside precursors were first converted into the corresponding glycosyl bromides that were then converted into the OFox imidates in the presence of Ag(2)O followed by the activation with catalytic Lewis acid in a regenerative fashion. Reported herein is a direct conversion of thioglycosides via the regenerative approach that bypasses the intermediacy of bromides and eliminates the need for heavy-metal-based promoters. The direct regenerative activation of thioglycosides is achieved under neutral reaction conditions using only 1 equiv. NIS and catalytic HOFox without the acidic additives.

In the current proposed analysis, a new, feasible, and selective fluorimetric approach was designed for baclofen assay. Baclofen is a medication prescribed as a therapy for muscle spasticity that originated from multiple sclerosis or a spinal cord injury, and other cases such as hiccups. The analytical approach relies on the use of ninhydrin to form a fluorescent derivative that was monitored at λex 386 nm or λem 480 nm. Under suitable reaction conditions, the primary amino moiety in baclofen was condensed with ninhydrin and phenylacetaldehyde in the presence of Teorel buffer as a buffered medium. The method exhibited linearity when baclofen concentration was plotted against response in the range 1-10 μg ml-1 . Adjustment of the reaction variables and study of validation parameters according to ICH directives were performed correctly. An interference study was implemented to ensure that no discrepancy from the excipient had occurred. Finally, the proposed method was applied successfully for baclofen assay in dosage form and extended to test Mylobac content uniformity.

The efficient and selective synthesis of functionalized seven-membered rings remains an important pursuit within synthetic organic chemistry, as this motif appears in numerous drug-like molecules and natural products. Use of cycloaddition reactions remains an attractive approach for their construction within the perspective of atom and step economy. Additionally, the ability to combine multiple components in a single reaction has the potential to allow for efficient combinatorial strategies of diversity-oriented synthesis. The inherent entropic penalty associated with achieving these transformations has impressively been overcome with development of catalysis, whereby the reaction components can be pre-organized through activation by transition-metal-catalysis. The fine-tuning of metal/ligand combinations as well as reaction conditions allows for achieving chemo-, regio-, diastereo- and enantioselectivity in these transformations. Herein, we discuss recent advances in transition-metal-catalyzed construction of seven-membered rings via combination of 2-4 components mediated by a variety of metals. An emphasis is placed on the mechanistic aspects of these transformations to both illustrate the state of the science and to highlight the unique application of novel processes of transition-metals in these transformations.

The synthesis of unprecedented BINOL‐derived cationic phosphonites is described. Through the use of these phosphanes as ancillary ligands in AuI catalysis, a highly regio‐ and enantioselective assembly of appropriately designed alkynes into 1‐(aryl)benzo[5]carbohelicenes is achieved. The modular synthesis of these ligands and the enhanced reactivity that they impart to AuI‐centers after coordination have been found to be the key features that allow an optimization of the reaction conditions until the desired benzo[5]helicenes are obtained with high yield and enantioselectivity., A new family of α‐cationic phosphonites derived from BINOL has been synthesized. Their use as ancillary ligands in AuI catalysis allows the enantioselective assembly of 1‐aryl [5]helicenes with excellent yields and in up to 98 % ee.

A straightforward method for the synthesis of spiro[cyclobuta[a]indene-7,1'-cyclobutane] derivatives from cyclobutanols has been developed via one-pot [3+2] spiroannulation. A series of new spiro[cyclobuta[a]indene-7,1'-cyclobutane] derivatives are facilely synthesized in good yields under mild reaction conditions.

Transfer hydrogenation reactions are of great interest to reduce diverse molecules under mild reaction conditions. To date, this type of reaction has only been successfully applied to alkenes, alkynes and polarized unsaturated compounds such as ketones, imines, pyridines, etc. The reduction of benzene derivatives by transfer hydrogenation has never been described, which is likely due to the high energy barrier required to dearomatize these compounds. In this context, we have developed a catalytic transfer hydrogenation reaction for the reduction of benzene derivatives and heteroarenes to form complex 3‐dimensional scaffolds bearing various functional groups at room temperature without needing compressed hydrogen gas., Relax, reduce pressure! The development of the first catalytic transfer hydrogenation reaction for the reduction of benzene derivatives is described. This strategy was enabled by the use of a commercially available rhodium complex in the presence of ammonia borane in TFE leading to the formation of active nanoparticles. The process allows the reduction of various highly stable (hetero)arenes in mild reaction conditions without the need of compressed hydrogen gas and the complicated setup associated with it.

Herein we describe the first organocatalytic asymmetric C(sp2 )-H allylation of racemic trisubstituted allenoates with Morita-Baylis-Hillman (MBH) carbonates to access axially chiral tetrasubstituted allenoates. Various trisubstituted allenoates and MBH carbonates were well tolerated under mild reaction conditions, providing novel chiral tetrasubstituted allenoates with adjacent axial chirality and tertiary carbon stereocenters in high yields with good to excellent diastereoselectivities and enantioselectivities.

Electroorganic synthesis is a promising tool to design sustainable transformations and discover new reactivities. However, the added setup complexity caused by electrodes in the system impedes efficient screening of reaction conditions. Herein, we present a microfluidic platform that enables automated high-throughput experimentation (HTE) for electroorganic synthesis at a 15-microliter scale. Two HTE modules are demonstrated: 1) the rapid electrochemical reaction condition screening for a radical-radical cross-coupling reaction on micro-fabricated interdigitated electrodes, and 2) measurements of kinetics for mediated anodic oxidations using the microliter-scale cyclic voltammetry. The presented modular approach could be deployed for a range of other electroorganic chemistry applications beyond the demonstrated functionalities.

A diastereoselective hydroalkynylation of terminal alkynes to form the head‐to‐head dimerization products by two different cobalt‐phosphine catalyst system is reported. The use of the bidentate ligand dppp and additional triphenylphosphine led to the selective formation of the (E)‐1,3‐enynes (E:Z>99:1) in good to excellent yields, while the tridentate ligand TriPhos led to the corresponding (Z)‐1,3‐enynes in moderate to good yields with excellent stereoselectivities (up to E:Z=1:99). Both pre‐catalysts are easy to handle, because of their stability under atmospheric conditions. The optimized reaction conditions were identified by the Design of Experiments (DoE) approach, which has not been used before in cobalt‐catalysed reaction optimisation. DoE decreased the number of required reactions to a minimum., Cobalt catalysis at a crossroad: The choice of the ligands in a cobalt‐catalysed hydroalkynylation of terminal alkynes is decisive to form the dimerization products in a diastereoselective fashion. The (E)‐1,3‐enynes are formed in good to excellent yields and outstanding selectivities (E:Z>99:1), while the corresponding (Z)‐1,3‐enynes were isolated in moderate to good yields with excellent stereoselectivities (up to E:Z=1:99).

Reported here is the discovery of a redox-neutral NiII /NiII catalytic cycle which is capable of the linear-selective hydroarylation of unactivated alkenes with arylboronic acids for the first time. This novel catalytic cycle, enabled by the use of an electron-rich diimine ligand, features broad substrate scope, and excellent functional-group and heterocycle compatibility under mild reaction conditions in the absence of additional oxidants and reductants. Mechanistic investigations using kinetic analysis and deuterium-labelling experiments revealed the protonation to be the rate-determining step in this redox-neutral catalysis, and the reversible chain-walking nature of the newly developed diimine-Ni catalyst.

International audience; The development of catalysts that can operate under exceptionally harsh and unconventional conditions is of critical importance for the transition of the energy and chemicals industries to low-emission and renewable chemical feedstocks. In this review we will highlight materials and more specifically metal-containing zeolite catalysts that have been tested under harsh reaction conditions such as high temperature light alkane conversion and biomass valorization. Particular attention will be given to studies that explore the stability and recyclability of metal-containing zeolite catalysts operating in continuous modes. Metal-containing zeolites are considered as an important class of catalysts operating outside the comfort zone of current heterogeneous catalytic reactions in both gas and liquid phase reactions. The relationship between the properties of the metalcontaining zeolite and catalytic performance will be explored.

Metallaphotoredox catalysis has evolved into an enabling platform to construct C(sp(3))-hybridized centers under remarkably mild reaction conditions. The cultivation of abundant radical precursor feedstocks has significantly increased the scope of transition-metal-catalyzed cross-couplings, especially with respect to C(sp(2))–C(sp(3)) linkages. In recent years, considerable effort has been devoted to understanding the origin of stereoinduction in dual catalytic processes. In this context, Ni- and Cu-catalyzed transformations have played a predominant role exploiting this mode of catalysis. Herein, we provide a critical overview on recent progress in enantioselective bond formations enabled by Ni- and Cu-catalyzed manifolds. Furthermore, selected stereochemical control elements within the realm of diastereoselective transformations are discussed.

A highly enantioselective synthesis of various chiral heterobicyclic molecules including spiroaminals and fused bicyclic acetals has been developed via a chiral copper catalyzed cyclopropanation-rearrangement (CP-RA) approach under mild reaction conditions. Remarkably, the asymmetric CP-RA for exocyclic vinyl substrates without a pro-stereogenic carbon at the β-position has been realized for the first time and a broad substrate scope with excellent results (33 examples; 34-99 % yields; >95/5 dr and 91-99 % ee) has been achieved. An application of a successive enantioselective CP-RA approach was also described, providing a concise access to complex chiral heteropolycycles.

(Oxo)Nitridophosphates have recently been identified as a promising compound class for application in the field of solid‐state lighting. Especially, the latest medium‐pressure syntheses under ammonothermal conditions draw attention of the semiconductor and lighting industry on nitridophosphates. In this contribution, we introduce hot isostatic presses as a new type of medium‐pressure synthetic tool, further simplifying nitridophosphate synthesis. In a second step, phosphorus nitride was replaced as starting material by red phosphorus, enabling the synthesis of Ca2PN3 as model compound, starting only from readily available compounds. Moreover, first luminescence investigations on Eu2+‐doped samples reveal Ca2PN3:Eu2+ as a promising broad‐band red‐emitter (λ em=650 nm; fwhm=1972 cm−1). Besides simple handling, the presented synthetic method offers access to large sample volumes, and the underlying reaction conditions facilitate single‐crystal growth, required for excellent optical properties., Hot isostatic pressing is introduced as easy and fast synthetic access to nitridophosphate phosphors, while providing large‐scale quantities. In particular, the calcium nitridophosphate Ca2PN3:Eu2+ was synthesized under medium‐pressure conditions (150 MPa N2, 1200 °C), revealing single crystals with remarkable size (>100 μm) and quality. Further, Ca2PN3:Eu2+ shows a rather narrow deep‐red emission and notable high internal quantum efficiency.

The first Pd-catalyzed enantioselective azidation of unactivated alkenes has been established by using readily accessible 1-azido-1,2-benziodoxol-3(1H)-one (ABX) as an azidating reagent, which affords a wide variety of structurally diverse 3-N3 -substituted piperidines in good yields with excellent enantioselectivity. The reaction features good functional-group compatibility and mild reaction conditions. Notably, both an electrophilic azidating reagent and the sterically bulky chiral pyridinyl-oxazoline (Pyox) ligand are crucial to the successful reaction.

A straight forward synthesis and efficient introduction of fluoromethyl group in nitrogen heterocycles is reported. Starting from the respective NH heterocycles fluoromethylation is performed with fluoroiodomethane and proceeds under mild reaction conditions. Structural information of monofluoromethylated nitrogen‐containing cyclic compounds containing the biologically active NCH2F moiety are reported. The particularly impressively change of physical and spectroscopic properties by the substitution of a methyl group by a monofluoromethyl group is discussed based on these examples.

International audience; We report herein a novel photoredox-catalyzed synthesis of allylic trifluoromethanes. The use of sulfilimino iminium as a source of trifluoromethyl radicals proves crucial to achieving high selectivity. Importantly, both styrene derivatives and unactivated alkenes are for the first time suitable partners for this process. The mild reaction conditions are compatible with a variety of functional groups. Remarkably, this method is readily broadened to other perfluoroalkyl groups (RF=CFCl2, CF2Br, C4F9). An extensive mechanistic study is also provided.

A short total synthesis of ajoene, (E,Z )‐4,5,9‐trithiadodeca‐1,6,11‐triene 9‐oxide, has been achieved over six steps. In addition, a continuous flow synthesis under mild reaction conditions to (E,Z )‐4,5,9‐trithiadodeca‐1,7,11‐triene is described starting from simple and easily accessible starting materials. Over four steps including propargylation, radical addition of thioacetate, deprotection, and disulfide formation/ allylation, the target product can be obtained at a rate of 0.26 g h−1 in an overall yield of 12 %.

Asymmetric pallada‐electrocatalyzed C−H olefinations were achieved through the synergistic cooperation with transient directing groups. The electrochemical, atroposelective C−H activations were realized with high position‐, diastereo‐, and enantio‐control under mild reaction conditions to obtain highly enantiomerically‐enriched biaryls and fluorinated N−C axially chiral scaffolds. Our strategy provided expedient access to, among others, novel chiral BINOLs, dicarboxylic acids and helicenes of value to asymmetric catalysis. Mechanistic studies by experiments and computation provided key insights into the catalyst's mode of action., EE: E nantioselective E lectrocatalysis was realized in terms of asymmetric C−H activation through transient directing group (TDG)‐enabled pallada‐electrocatalysis. Experiments and calculations rationalize the key transition states, while asymmetric electrocatalysis provided step‐economical access to axially chiral bi(hetero)aryl diols, diacids and helicenes.

The first plasma-assisted immobilization of an organocatalyst, namely a bifunctional phosphonium salt in an amorphous hydrogenated carbon coating, is reported. This method makes the requirement for prefunctionalized supports redundant. The immobilized catalyst was characterized by solid-state 13 C and 31 P NMR spectroscopy, SEM, and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The immobilized catalyst (1 mol %) was employed in the synthesis of cyclic carbonates from epoxides and CO2 . Notably, the efficiency of the plasma-treated catalyst on SiO2 was higher than those of the SiO2 support impregnated with the catalyst and even the homogeneous counterpart. After optimization of the reaction conditions, 13 terminal and four internal epoxides were converted with CO2 to the respective cyclic carbonates in yields of up to 99 %. Furthermore, the possibility to recycle the immobilized catalyst was evaluated. Even though the catalyst could be reused, the yields gradually decreased from the third run. However, this is the first example of the recycling of a plasma-immobilized catalyst, which opens new possibilities in the recovery and reuse of catalysts.

We report the first examples of catalytic enantioselective benzilic ester rearrangement reaction. In the presence of a catalytic amount of Cu(OTf)(2) and a chiral box ligand under mild conditions, reaction of 2,3-diketoesters with alcohols afforded structurally diverse alpha-aryl(alkyl) substituted-alpha-hydroxy malonates (tartronic esters) in good to excellent yields with high enantioselectivities. Preliminary mechanistic studies indicated that hemiketalization, rather than the dynamic kinetic resolution of hemiketal, was the enantiodetermining step under our reaction conditions.
