The benthic settlement success of American lobster (Homarus americanus) postlarvae is a key factor in population dynamics, with the temperature being a key factor. Given the spatial distribution of the species, its pelagic larvae probably encounter various thermal zones during development. Little information is available on the ability of lobster larvae to acclimate to temperature or if this ability varies among geographic areas. The main objectives of this study were to characterize (i) the settlement behavior of the postlarvae in relation to (a) temperature during larval development and (b) the geographic origin of the maternal parent and (ii) the behavioral response of postlarvae with different thermal histories in the presence/absence of a thermocline. Results did not support the hypothesis of thermal adaptation among local populations, as settlement behavior of postlarvae did not differ among females from different geographic regions. In contrast, larval survival and settlement behavior and postlarval energetic conditions varied with development temperature. Behavioral plasticity in the benthic settlement was observed in relation to temperature structure of the experimental water column. This study suggests that there may be links between development temperature and the natural variability in survival and settlement of American lobsters. Findings emphasize the need for an integrated approach in lobster recruitment studies with the inclusion of behavior in dispersion models.

Coastal embayments are at risk of impacts by climate change drivers such as ocean warming, sea level rise and alteration in precipitation regimes. The response of the ecosystem to these drivers is highly dependent on their magnitude of change, but also on physical characteristics such as bay morphology and river discharge, which play key roles in water residence time and hence estuarine functioning. These considerations are especially relevant for bivalve aquaculture sites, where the cultured biomass can alter ecosystem dynamics. The combination of climate change, physical and aquaculture drivers can result in synergistic/antagonistic and nonlinear processes. A spatially explicit model was constructed to explore effects of the physical environment (bay geomorphic type, freshwater inputs), climate change drivers (sea level, temperature, precipitation) and aquaculture (bivalve species, stock) on ecosystem functioning. A factorial design led to 336 scenarios (48 hydrodynamic × 7 management). Model outcomes suggest that the physical environment controls estuarine functioning given its influence on primary productivity (bottom-up control dominated by riverine nutrients) and horizontal advection with the open ocean (dominated by bay geomorphic type). The intensity of bivalve aquaculture ultimately determines the bivalve-phytoplankton trophic interaction, which can range from a bottom-up control triggered by ammonia excretion to a top-down control via feeding. Results also suggest that temperature is the strongest climate change driver due to its influence on the metabolism of poikilothermic organisms (e.g. zooplankton and bivalves), which ultimately causes a concomitant increase of top-down pressure on phytoplankton. Given the different thermal tolerance of cultured species, temperature is also critical to sort winners from losers, benefiting Crassostrea virginica over Mytilus edulis under the specific conditions tested in this numerical exercise. In general, it is predicted that bays with large rivers and high exchange with the open ocean will be more resilient under climate change when bivalve aquaculture is present.

Mussel byssus represents a fascinating class of biological materials with a unique capacity to adhere onto virtually any solid surface. Proteins expressed in byssus, the byssal-producing organ (foot) as well as mantle tissue from Mytilus edulis or Mytilus californianus are analyzed by liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). The mantle is used as a control tissue to pinpoint unique proteins from the foot samples potentially involved in byssogenesis. This work represents an important step towards identifying biologically important proteins expressed in foot, as well as extending knowledge on the byssus proteome. Considering the minimal proteomics data of the studied species, this data also contributes to a more complete description of M. edulis and M. californianus proteomes.

WOS:000362185000005; Living organisms are constantly evolving to secure their survival via adaptations at the molecular and cellular level. Most marine bivalves have microscopic planktonic larval stages until settlement to the benthic environment. These pelagic stages are generally more sensitive than their adult counterparts to environmental and pathogen threats. Adaptive capacities could improve survival of these early stages. Recent advancements in data mining and pipeline analysis should shed light on the currently unknown processes that occur during these first stages. Existing data on early stages are fragmented compared with the abundance of information available for adult. Exploring diversity through aquaculture and lessening the impact of common issues, for example, massive mortalities of larvae, especially within the current conditions of a changing climate, ultimately rests on our knowledge of the molecular processes responsible for phenotypic plasticity. Although it is somewhat difficult to assess immune mechanisms by tracking circulating immunocytes in larvae, studies on the development of immune processes are now feasible at the transcript level. Next-generation techniques offer outstanding solutions for wide-range transcriptome analysis. We present a short review of the early ontogeny of the immune system in marine bivalves, with particular focus on next-generation sequencing applications. Like all reviews of this nature, there is a trade-off between the depth of the coverage and the number of subjects discussed. We will thus restrict the scope to bivalve immunity and focus on the central concepts across a wide range of topics, that is, the ontogeny of immunity and advancements in molecular studies.

We considered Cushing's match/mismatch theory in a heterotrophic environment and hypothesized that settlement and recruitment success in blue mussel are higher when the food supply is rich in polyunsaturated and essential fatty acids (PUFA/EFA). To test this hypothesis, we monitored larval development as well as fatty acid composition in trophic resources during two successive reproductive seasons. The decoupling we found between the presence of competent larvae in the water column and settlement rates strongly suggests that metamorphosis is delayed until conditions are suitable. In both years, the major mussel settlement peak was synchronized with a phytoplanktonic pulse rich in EFA, consisting of a large autotrophic bloom in 2007 and a short but substantial peak of picoeukaryotes in 2008. These results suggest a "trophic settlement trigger'' that indirectly affects recruitment by strongly improving the settlement rate. Despite similar larval settlement rates during both years, the lower 2007 recruitment likely resulted from a mismatch with a high lipid-quality trophic resource. The seasonal trophic conditions differed greatly between the two years, with fatty acids profiles reflecting heterotrophic plankton production in 2007 and mostly autotrophic production in 2008. In agreement with Cushing's theory, our results highlight a match/mismatch, related to the food lipid quality rather than food quantity. For the first time, we show that the recruitment in marine bivalves may be dependent on phytoplanktonic pulses characterized by high levels of PUFA.

In age-0 winter flounder Pseudopleuronectes americanus, a fixed long photoperiod (14.5 h light: 9.5 h dark) applied during the first 45 d postsettlement did not improve growth compared with fish held under natural photoperiod conditions. After being reared under these two regimes until 29 October, juveniles exposed to the long photoperiod after settlement were maintained under the same conditions during the winter, but temperature was not allowed to decrease below 4°C. Juveniles previously exposed to the natural photoperiod were maintained under one of the following conditions: (1) natural photoperiod and natural temperature (1–9°C), (2) natural photoperiod and a minimum winter temperature of 4°C, or (3) long photoperiod and a minimum temperature of 4°C. This study assessed the paternal effects on the growth of early juvenile winter flounder Pseudopleuronectes americanus and examined the energy allocation strategy employed during this critical stage. Males from three different locations (Passamaquoddy Bay, Baie-des-Chaleurs and the St Lawrence Estuary) were crossed with females from the Baie-des-Chaleurs, and the growth characteristics of hybrids from settlement to 45 days post-settlement were monitored under similar culture conditions. Young juveniles displayed good growth rates (0·09 ± 0·02 mm day−1), with no differences related to sire origin, in terms of growth indicators (length, width, RNA:DNA and triacylglycerol:sterol ratios), condition indices (Fulton's K, pigmentation and fin erosion) and biochemical components (nucleic acids, proteins and lipid classes). These results suggest the absence of a paternal contribution to the growth strategy during the early juvenile stage of P. americanus. The results also highlight the high energetic cost associated with metamorphosis: young juveniles mobilized most of their triacylglycerol reserves during the growth period following settlement.

To ensure complete lipid extraction of algal samples collected on glass fiber filters, one must facilitate the access of extracting solvent to the lipids by using ultrasonication, grinding, or a combination of these two methods. This study examines the effect of these three treatments, in combination with storage time and sampling volumes, on the determination of lipid class composition of the diatom Chaetoceros gracilis. The TAG level was significantly influenced by treatment in relation to either storage time or sampling volume. FFA and other degradation products increased markedly with storage time at the expense of TAG and phospholipids (PL). Finally, sampling volume and storage time interacted in their effects on TAG and PL contents in an inverse manner.
