During infection, sickness behaviors, such as a hunched stance with piloerection, can facilitate host resistance by supporting the generation and maintenance of fever. Fever, in turn, is mediated by hypothalamic neuroimmune signaling. Sickness behaviors, however, can also be influenced by social stimuli. In the present study, guinea pig pups were injected with lipopolysaccharide to simulate a bacterial infection and then exposed to a novel, threatening environment while either with their mother or alone. We found the presence of the mother suppressed sickness behavior, but enhanced fever, and had no measureable effect on gene expression of hypothalamic mediators of fever. This 3-way dissociation induced by the mother’s presence is interpreted in terms of the differential adaptive consequences of behavioral and febrile responses for pups in this situation. The results contribute to a growing literature linking immunological and social processes.

The autologous transplantation of hair follicles that have been separated into single follicular units is an accepted treatment for androgenetic alopecia. Recent studies demonstrate that the multiple stem cell populations and surrounding cutaneous tissues coordinately regulate the hair follicle functions and skin homeostasis. Therefore, the critical issues for consideration regarding functional hair restoration therapy are reproduction the correct connectivity and cooperation with host cutaneous tissues, including the arrector pili muscle (APM) and nerve system. We report successful establishment of mouse single follicular transplantation model and autonomous restoration of transplanted hair follicle piloerection in mouse skin. Transplanted hair follicles were responsive to the neurotransmitter acetylcholine and formed proper connections with surrounding host tissues such as APM and nerve fibers, which in turn connect with not only the hair follicle bulge region but also the APM. These results demonstrate that the piloerection ability of transplanted hair follicles can be estimated quantitatively. This study makes a substantial contribution towards the development of transplantation therapy that will facilitate future functional regeneration therapy for skin and skin appendages.

The development of myoclonic activity as a toxic effect of morphine application into the intrathecal space in rats is described. This syndrome resembled the human syndrome of action myoclonus by its spontaneous onset and its augmentation by initiation of movement or by an acoustic stimulus. It was not reversed or prevented by naloxone. This effect of morphine was associated with an increase in serotonergic activity in the spinal cord and was reduced by pretreatment with parachlorophenylalanine in doses which reduced spinal 5-HT by approximately 60%. The dose which produced this syndrome was about ten times higher than the analgesic dose applied by the same route. Other commonly used opiates such as: methadone (0.5-2 mg/kg), pethidine (2-10 mg/kg), fentanyl (2-10 micrograms/kg) and ketamine (2-10 mg/kg) did not produce myoclonic-like activity, but methadone and pethidine at the highest doses caused respiratory arrest. Fentanyl appeared to be the safest of the drugs tested since a relatively high dose, administered into the intrathecal space did not cause any side effects, while morphine was least safe of the five drugs since it produced myoclonic activity in addition to the widely documented respiratory depression. We suggest that the production of the myoclonic activity is mediated by spinal serotonergic systems.

The relationship between parental care received and physiological and behavioral responses to parental separation, isolation, and reunion was investigated in seven juvenile Goeldi's monkeys living in their family groups. Physiological responses were measured noninvasively: the hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal axis via urinary cortisol output and the autonomic nervous system via piloerection on the tail. Parent–infant aggression demonstrated high intergroup variation and predicted: (a) an increase in urinary cortisol output, rs = 0.86, p = 0.04, and duration of piloerection, rs = 0.71, p = 0.08, at initial separation–isolation; (b) adaptation of piloerection, rs = −0.89, p = 0.03, to repeated separation–isolation. Juvenile Goeldi's monkeys that had received high parental aggression were more physiologically responsive to separation; they also sought more contact with their mothers at reunion, rs = 0.93, p = 0.02. We propose that these data are consistent with the hypothesis that high emotional reactivity is related to insecure attachment to aggressive parents in this New World primate. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Increasing attention is drawn to the investigation of piloerection (or goose bumps) in response to strong emotional experiences. This research is complicated by the need to rely on self-report measures. This article proposes an efficient method for the objective and continuous measurement of piloerection. It is based on an optical recording device combined with a discrete Fourier transform analysis quantifying the frequency power related to visible piloerection. The validity of the method was demonstrated in a proof-of-principle experiment involving a person with the exceptional ability to control the erection of his hair. The method reliably mapped all occurrences of visible piloerection and provided insight into the temporal dynamics of the underlying physiological process. We report the case of a 76-year-old man with a 10-year history of cold-induced sweating. He noticed excessive sweating in winter starting at the age of 66 years. The sweat appeared shortly after exposure to a cold environment, and was limited to his neck, chest and arms. Piloerection was also noticed in the sweating areas. The results from a heat-induced sweating test and axon reflex sweating test, as well as the histology of his sweat glands, were normal. The heart/mediastinum ratio of 123I-metaiodobenzylguanidine uptake was reduced, suggesting underlying pathomechanisms of incidental Lewy body disease. The cold-induced sweating and elevation of plasma noradrenaline were inhibited by clonidine and amitriptyline. These results suggest the possibility of misconnection of afferent inputs under a cold environment to efferent pathways of heat-induced sweating.

1. A suspension of the killed cell bodies of either E. coli, S. dysenteriae or S. typhosa was micro-injected through cannulae implanted chronically at specific sites within the diencephalon and mid-brain of the unanaesthetized monkey. A biphasic, monophasic or an undifferentiated fever could be induced by each type of micro-organism, but the type of response depended solely upon the locus of injection. 2. Although little difference in the potency of the three pyrogens was found, the rise in body temperature was in each instance dependent upon the concentration of the endotoxin. A more intense fever was accompanied by shivering, vasoconstriction of the ear vessels, piloerection and huddling behaviour. Tolerance to the pyrexic effect of repeated injections of endotoxin did not develop. 3. The febrile response having the shortest latency, greatest maximum rise in temperature and largest 10-hr fever index was evoked by micro-injections into the anterior hypothalamic, preoptic area. The incidence of biphasic fevers was also greater after endotoxin was injected into this same region. Endotoxin given similarly in the posterior hypothalamus or in the mesencephalon had either no effect or produced a smaller elevation in temperature after a longer latency. The distance of an injection site from the coronal plane formed by the optic chiasm and anterior commissure correlated significantly with the latency and magnitude of the temperature change as well as the fever index. 4. When given intravenously, endotoxin in a quantity at least 100 times greater was required to evoke a fever similar to that produced when the pyrogen was micro-injected into the anterior hypothalamic, preoptic region. However, a biphasic fever was evoked with a latency of from 3 to 15 min when a larger amount of endotoxin was injected intravenously. Tolerance developed rapidly to the febrile effect of endotoxin administered by this route although toxic reactions were not observed. 5. After the fever evoked by the hypothalamic injection of endotoxin had reached a plateau, 300–1200 mg sodium salicylate administered intragastrically produced a dose-dependent fall in temperature, but had no effect on the body temperature of an afebrile monkey. 6. It is concluded that in the rhesus monkey, a bacterial pyrogen can evoke a fever which is mediated entirely by an action on the central nervous system, the principal site being the anterior hypothalamic, preoptic area. The first phase of a biphasic fever caused by bacteria acting either by the central or peripheral route seems to be due either to a direct action of the pyrogen on the cells of the anterior hypothalamus, or to the secondary release within this region of an intermediary thermogenic substance such as 5-hydroxytryptamine or prostaglandin. The finding that sodium salicylate counteracts a centrally evoked fever is not compatible with the hypothesis that an antipyretic exerts its action by preventing a pyrogen that is circulating in the blood stream from entering the central nervous system.

The histological structure of the scent marking glands of Callithrix jacchus jacchus is described. Frequencies of scent marking were variable and bore no relation to reproductive states. Scent marking was temporally associated with sensory and piloerection behaviours. Possible functions of scent marking in C. J. jacchus are discussed.

Three hundred and forty-seven tissue specimens were studied from 23 patients with male pattern alopecia. Characteristic features of pattern alopecia included: the presence of miniature or vellus follicles; a marked enlargement of the sebaceous glands and arrectores pilorum muscles; the presence of connective tissue streamers beneath the vellus follicles; and the thinning of the dermis. A mild perivascular infiltrate of mononuclear cells and mild capillary dilatation was sometimes seen. An increased number of mast cells was often a prominent feature. Histochemical procedures were performed for glycogen, acid mucosaccharides, inorganic substances, and enzymes including alkaline phosphatase, acid phosphatase, beta glucuronidase, cholinesterase, aminopeptidase, oxidases and dehydrogenases. Histochemical studies did not reveal any significantly abnormal enzyme changes other than the altered vascular and nerve supply to the the miniature follicles.

In unanaesthetized cats the effects were examined of propylbenzilylcholine mustard (PrBCM) on injection into the cannulated cerebral ventricles and cisterna magna. Extreme motor excitation, vocalization, shivering leading to fever, tachypnoea, panting, piloerection and salivation were produced on ventricular, vigorous scratching bouts on cisternal, injections. The sites of these actions are discussed. None of the effects was produced by atropine similarly injected. All effects were suppressed by anaesthetizing doses of pentobarbitone sodium injected intraperitoneally.

Clonidine, lidamidine, and loperamide each inhibited castor oil-induced diarrhea in the rat. Clonidine and lidamidine, but not loperamide, also induced diuresis but at doeses above those producing antidiarrheal activity. Clonidine and lidamidine, but not loperamide, produced autonomic and central effects including piloerection, hypotonia, exopthalmus and ataxia at doeses similar to those producing antidiarrheal activity. These data suggest that only loperamide possesses selective antidiarrheal activity.

Summary: Pilomotor epilepsy is a rare phenomenon. A 35-year-old man suffered a traumatic contusion of the right temporal lobe and subsequently developed spells characterized by diffuse piloerection and sweating. We believe this to be the first reported association between pilomotor epilepsy and posttraumatic head injury. Al-though pilomotor seizures may result from diverse etiologies, they appear to have a common involvement of tem-porolimbic structures. RESUME Ľepilepsie pilomotrice est rare. Creemos que este es el primer caso publicado en el que se asocia la epilepsia polomotora y un traumatismo craneoencefalico. Aunque los ataques pilomo-tores pueden ser el resultado de diversas etiologias, parece ser que, en todos ellos, es comun una afectaci6n de las estructuras li'mbicas del lobulo temporal. Ein 35-jahriger Patient litt an einer traumatischen Kontusion des rechten Temporallap-pens und entwickelte Anfalle mit diffuser Piloerektion und Schwitzen. Wir halten dies fur eine erstmalig beschriebene Verknupfung zwischen posttraumatischer Hirnverletzung und pilomotorischer Epilepsie. Da pilomotorische Anfalle durch ver-schiedene Atiologien verursacht werden, scheint ihnen im allge-meinen eine Beeintrachtigung temporo-limbischer Strukturen zugrunde zu liegen.

Two longitudinal studies were conducted to quantify the social behaviors exhibited by both male and female Long-Evans rats from the immediate postweaning period until young adulthood. In Experiment 1, male sibling pairs engaged in a high level of play fighting during the early juvenile period but such activity declined to a level significantly lower than that of female and mixed-sex pairs after 54 days of age. In Experiment 2, social exchanges during maturation were examined during the presence and absence of the piloerection response in an effort to distinguish play fighting from agonistic interactions. In male pairs, piloerection was rarely seen before 55–75 days of age but thereafter occurred with increasing frequency especially among dominant males. Furthermore, subordinate males retreated from their dominant partners and remained in an escape chamber for a significant amount of time only during encounters involving the exhibition of piloerection. This finding suggests that piloerection can be useful in identifying play and aggressive interactions. In female and heterosexual pairs, piloerection was observed infrequently during social encounters occurring throughout maturation. In addition, when given the opportunity to escape, females were less likely to retreat from play activity if their partner was another female than a male.

The fluorescence histochemical method of Falck-Hillarp ('62) demonstrates dense plexuses of catecholamine-containing nerves in the piloarrector muscles of adult stump-tailed macaques. When these muscle fibers are viewed under the electron microscope, most of the axon terminal profiles between them contain numerous dense-cored vesicles (adrenergic); the rest of the terminals contain mainly agranular vesicles (cholinergic). Intradermal injections of 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA, 1 and 5 mg) or 5-hydroxydopamine (5-OHDA, 10 mg) into the scalp caused the fluorescence from the nerve fibers in the muscles to completely disappear. The 6-OHDA injections induced severe degenerative changes in the adrenergic terminals whereas the 5-OHDA injections caused only the granules in the vesicles to increase in numbers. Thus, the piloarrector muscles of these macaques are innervated with both adrenergic and cholinergic terminals, but the former are more numerous than the latter.

Specific agonistic responses of albino rats were compared for dominant colony rats and intruders, and for rats in a “reflexive fighting” task. The “reflexive fighters” showed high levels of defensive responses such as boxing and freezing, and very low levels of aggressive behaviors such as piloerection, biting, and the lateral display. This pattern clearly suggests that the behaviors measured in the reflexive fighting task reflect conspecific defensive reactions, rather than “shockelicited aggression.” Moreover, striking responses seen in the reflexive fighting task also occur at a high rate when footshock is given to a solitary rat held in a boxing posture. Thus it appears that “reflexive fighting” primarily involves defensive rather than aggressive responses.

A method has been described for the study of the central effects produced by the intracerebral injection of drugs in the unanaesthetized mouse. The effects observed were in good agreement with those obtained after similar injections in cats, dogs and human beings. After intracerebral injection, drugs of diverse structure produced certain generalized effects: changes in positioning of the tail, stupor, hyperexcitability and tachypnoea. Both acetylcholine and methacholine produced an akinetic seizure and depression, but the latter compound also caused lacrimation and salivation. Atropine produced piloerection, increased sensitivity to sound and touch, clonic convulsions and scratching, whereas hexamethonium caused Parkinsonian-like muscle tremors and peripheral vasodilatation. After adrenaline, hyperexcitability, exophthalmos, stupor and death from pulmonary oedema were observed, but (+)-methylamphetamine produced only piloerection and exaggerated activity in response to sound and touch. Ergotamine caused a decreased sensitivity to sound and touch, micturition, and stupor, while ergometrine caused clonic convulsions, piloerection, defaecation and stupor.

1. In the unanaesthetized monkey (Macaca cyclopis), heating the spinal cord or the medulla oblongata from 38 to 42-43 degrees C produced subcutaneous vasodilatation, respiratory acceleration (frequently interrupted with a period of apnoea in the medullary experiment), bradycardia and hypotension. The animal became drowsy and had a slight decrease of body temperature. Heating the medulla oblongata often induced retching and/or emesis.2. Cooling the spinal cord or medulla oblongata from 38 to 32-33 degrees C produced subcutaneous vasoconstriction, slower respiration, tachycardia and hypertension. The animal became restless and had a slight increase of body temperature. Cooling the spinal cord induced shivering of the four limbs, while cooling the medulla oblongata induced only shivering of the jaws.3. The effects of heating or cooling of the spinal cord or the medulla oblongata were antagonized by simultaneous application of temperature displacement of the opposite nature in the same areas or vice versa.4. The data suggest that some thermosensitive elements possibly responsible for thermoregulation reside in the spinal cord and the medulla oblongata.

The administration of p-chlorophenylalanine to mice prevents the rise in brain 5-hydroxytryptamine concentration associated with ethanol withdrawal but does not affect the increase in brain catecholamines which occurs at the same time. The locomotor excitement, piloerection, tremor and handling convulsions which occur during ethanol withdrawal were not affected. These results suggest that the increase in brain 5-hydroxytryptamine which occurs in ethanol withdrawal is a consequence of increased 5-hydroxytryptamine synthesis and that it is probably not involved in the above behavioural changes of ethanol withdrawal.
