Abstract Aims Right ventricular failure after left ventricular assist device (LVAD) implantation is a major concern that remains challenging to predict. We sought to investigate the relationship between preoperative pulmonary artery pulsatility index (PAPi) and mortality after LVAD implantation. Methods and results A retrospective analysis of the ASSIST‐ICD multicentre registry allowed the assessment of PAPi before LVAD according to the formula [(systolic pulmonary artery pressure − diastolic pulmonary artery pressure)/central venous pressure]. The primary endpoint was survival at 3 months, according to the threshold value of PAPi determined by the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve. A multivariate analysis including demographic, echographic, haemodynamic, and biological variables was performed to identify predictive factors for 2 year mortality. One hundred seventeen patients were included from 2007 to 2021. The mean age was 58.45 years (±13.16), with 15.4% of women (sex ratio 5.5). A total of 53.4% were implanted as bridge to transplant and 43.1% as destination therapy. Post‐operative right ventricular failure was observed in 57 patients (48.7%), with no significant difference between survivors and non‐survivors at 1 month (odds ratio 1.59, P = 0.30). The median PAPi for the whole study population was 2.83 [interquartile range 1.63–4.69]. The threshold value of PAPi determined by the ROC curve was 2.84. Abstract Background Finding sensitive clinical outcome measures has become crucial in natural history studies and therapeutic trials of neuromuscular disorders. Here, we focus on 1‐year longitudinal data from quantitative magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and phosphorus magnetic resonance spectroscopy (31P MRS) in a placebo‐controlled study of sirolimus for inclusion body myositis (IBM), also examining their links to functional, strength, and clinical parameters in lower limb muscles. Methods Quantitative MRI and 31P MRS data were collected at 3 T from a single site, involving 44 patients (22 on placebo, 22 on sirolimus) at baseline and year‐1, and 21 healthy controls. Assessments included fat fraction (FF), contractile cross‐sectional area (cCSA), and water T2 in global leg and thigh segments, muscle groups, individual muscles, as well as 31P MRS indices in quadriceps or triceps surae. Analyses covered patient‐control comparisons, annual change assessments via standard t‐tests and linear mixed models, calculation of standardized response means (SRM), and exploration of correlations between MRI, 31P MRS, functional, strength, and clinical parameters. Results The quadriceps and gastrocnemius medialis muscles had the highest FF values, displaying notable heterogeneity and asymmetry, particularly in the quadriceps. Effective conservation management of wildlife species depends on understanding their space and habitat use. Telemetry has become the primary source of data for information on how species use space and habitats. However, animals can be difficult to capture, leading to limited sample sizes and thus low quality inferences. As some individuals may be easier to capture than others, it may be tempting to use them to make inferences about the studied population as a whole. Juvenile birds, in contrast to adults, are easy to capture while they are still in the nest. However, there are few studies on when and how they might serve to obtain a representative characterization of the habitat or space use of adults. This study investigated this by using GPS‐tracking data of 35 adult/juvenile dyads of golden eagles Aquila chrysaetos, with the juvenile and adult in a dyad sharing the same home‐range. We assessed juvenile‐to‐adult home‐range overlap and also compared their relative use of habitats within that space. We also analysed how these metrics evolved throughout the post‐fledging dependence period (PFDP). During this period, juvenile‐to‐adult similarity was more than 80% for the entire home‐range, whereas it was lower for the core area (approximately 60%). Habitat‐use similarity was high, at approximately 90% for both the home‐range and core area, both in land‐cover and topography. The similarity increased following the improvement of juvenile flight skills over a period of two months, to the extent that two months after fledging and until the end of the PFDP, habitat and space use of juveniles can be used to infer the home‐range and habitat requirements of adults. It would be valuable to study this ‘adult‐by‐juvenile replacement' approach in other species to determine whether it could be generalized, notably for species with a shorter dependence period or more complex social interactions.

Abstract Risk stratification and treatment response evaluation are key features in acute myeloid leukemia (AML) management. Immunophenotypic and molecular approaches all rely on the detection of persisting leukemic cells by measurable residual disease techniques. A new approach is proposed here by assessing medullary myeloid maturation by flow cytometry through a myeloid progenitor ratio (MPR). Abstract Introduction In April 2019, French authorities mandated dihydropyrimidine dehydrogenase (DPD) screening, specifically testing uracilemia, to mitigate the risk of toxicity associated with fluoropyrimidine‐based chemotherapy. However, this subject is still of debate as there is no consensus on a standardized DPD deficiency screening test. We conducted a real‐life retrospective study with the aim of assessing the impact of DPD screening on the occurrence of severe toxicity and exploring the potential benefits of complete genotyping using next‐generation sequencing. Methods All adult patients consecutively treated with 5‐fluorouracil (5‐FU) or its oral prodrug at six cancer centers between March 2018 and February 2019 were considered for inclusion. Dihydropyrimidine dehydrogenase deficiency screening included gene encoding DPD (DPYD) genotyping using complete genome sequencing and DPD phenotyping (uracilemia or dihydrouracilemia/uracilemia ratio) or both tests. Associations between each DPD screening method and (i) severe (grade ≥3) early toxicity and (ii) fluoropyrimidine dose reduction in the second chemotherapy cycle were evaluated using multivariable logistic regression analysis. Furthermore, we assessed the concordance between DPD genotype and phenotype using Cohen's kappa. Results A total of 551 patients were included. Most patients were tested for DPD deficiency (86%) including DPYD genotyping only (6%), DPD phenotyping only (8%), or both (72%). Complete DPD deficiency was not detected in the study population. Severe early toxicity events were observed in 73 patients (13%), with two patients (0.30%) presenting grade 5 toxicity. Despite the numerically higher toxicity rate in untested patients, the occurrence of severe toxicity was not significantly associated with the DPD screening method (p = 0.69). Concordance between the DPD genotype and phenotype was weak (Cohen's kappa of 0.14). Conclusion Due to insufficient numbers, our study was not able to demonstrate any added value of DPYD genotyping using complete genome sequencing to prevent 5‐FU toxicity. The optimal strategy for DPD screening before fluoropyrimidine‐based chemotherapy requires further clinical evaluation.

Abstract Background Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) with myelodysplasia‐related characteristics is a heterogeneous subset of AML that has been challenged throughout the history of myeloid malignancies classifications, considered to have similar outcomes as intermediate‐ or adverse‐risk AML depending on the subgroup. However, little is known about the fate of these patients in refractory or relapsed situation (R/R) after first line therapy. Methods A large series of R/R AML patients, recorded in the French DATAML registry, have received either intensive chemotherapy (ICT), azacitidine (AZA) as single agent, or best supportive care (BSC). A cohort of 183 patients (median age 63‐year‐old) with what was called at the time AML‐MRC has been explored, and data are reported here. Results Patient status was refractory for 93, while 90 had relapsed. Respectively, 88, 34, and 61 were included in the three treatment arms. The median OS of the whole cohort was 4.2 months (95%CI: 3.1–5.6) with a mean 1‐year overall survival of 24% ± 3.2%. There was no significant survival difference between refractory and relapsed patients. The BSC group had overall a significantly worse outcome (p = 0.0001), and this remained true in both refractory (p = 0.01) and relapsed (p = 0.002) patients. Similar survivals were observed in both groups comparing ICT and AZA. Conclusions These data, reporting about an ill‐explored population, indicate the poor prognosis of this condition where both ICT and AZA can be proposed. The latter, which was demonstrated here to be a feasible option, should be added to new targeted therapies.

Background The life course of individuals born very premature is a topic of increasing concern. The association between high early amino acid intake and later high blood pressure (HBP) in preterm neonates is debated. Methods and Results In a national, prospective, population‐based birth cohort, EPIPAGE‐2 (Etude Epidémiologique sur Petits Ages Gestationnels), we assessed blood pressure at 5 years. Eligible infants were those born between 24 and 29 weeks of gestation. Infants were distributed in 2 groups of 717 infants matched on propensity score on whether or not they were exposed to high amino acid intake (>3.5 g/kg per day at day 7); 455 control term infants were also enrolled. A value ≥95th percentile of reference values for age and height defined systolic or diastolic HBP. Blood pressure at 5 years of age was assessed for 389 and 385 children in the exposed and nonexposed groups, respectively. Rates (in percent) of systolic and diastolic HBP were 18.0% (95% CI, 14.5%–22.2%), 13.3% (95% CI, 10.3%–17.0%), 8.5% (95% CI, 6.5%–11.1%), and 9.0% (95% CI, 6.6%–12.3%), 10.2% (95% CI, 7.5%–13.6%), and 5.4% (95% CI, 3.8%–7.6%) in exposed, nonexposed, and term‐born groups, respectively. Exposure to high early amino acid intake and maximal serum creatinine (by 50 μmol/L) between day 3 and day 7 were 2 independent risk factors for systolic HBP (adjusted odds ratio [aOR], 1.60 [95% CI, 1.05–2.43] and aOR, 1.59 [95% CI, 1.12–2.26], respectively) but not for diastolic HBP (aOR, 0.84 [95% CI, 0.50–1.39] and aOR, 1.09 [95% CI, 0.71–1.67], respectively). After adjustment for 5‐year weight Z score, the aOR between high early amino acid intake and systolic HBP was 1.50 [95% CI, 0.98–2.30]. Conclusions These results suggest that mechanisms of childhood systolic HBP involve neonatal renal challenge by high amino acid intake or dysfunction.

Abstract Background Recently, the combination of venetoclax plus a hypomethylating agent (HMA; azacitidine ordecitabine) or low‐dose cytarabine (LDAC) showed promise in Phase III trials in previously untreated AML. In France at the time of this study, venetoclax was not yet approved for AML and there were therefore no formal usage recommendations. Here we report the first study in a French cohort that assessed venetoclax in combination with existing treatments for AML under real‐life conditions. Method This retrospective, real‐life study collected data on venetoclax use and management in a French cohort with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) ineligible for intensive chemotherapy. Result Of 118 patients, 81 were in second line/beyond (71.6% also hypomethylating agent [HMA]; 23.5% lowdose cytarabine [LDAC]) and 37 in first line. For venetoclax initiation, 57.3% underwent ramp up and 74.6% were hospitalized. Median venetoclax duration was 2.5 months (range 0.03‐16.2). With all treatment lines and regimens, most common grade 3/4 adverse events were hematologic (overall 96.4% of patients) and infections (57.1%). Dosage adjustments for drug interactions and safety varied between centers. In second‐line/beyond, median progression‐free survival was 4.0 months (95% confidence interval [CI] 2.7‐12.8) with venetoclax‐HMA and 3.4 months (1.3‐8.9) with venetoclax‐LDAC; overall response rate was 51.9% and 41.2%, respectively. Thus, we showed that venetoclax‐based treatment yields promising findings in patients with AML, but to address treatment complexity, practice harmonization is needed.

Abstract Current oncogenic theories state that tumors arise from cell lineages that sequentially accumulate (epi)mutations, progressively turning healthy cells into carcinogenic ones. While those models found some empirical support, they are little predictive of intraspecies age‐specific cancer incidence and of interspecies cancer prevalence. Notably, in humans and lab rodents, a deceleration (and sometimes decline) of cancer incidence rate has been found at old ages. Additionally, dominant theoretical models of oncogenesis predict that cancer risk should increase in large and/or long‐lived species, which is not supported by empirical data. Here, we explore the hypothesis that cellular senescence could explain those incongruent empirical patterns. More precisely, we hypothesize that there is a trade‐off between dying of cancer and of (other) ageing‐related causes. This trade‐off between organismal mortality components would be mediated, at the cellular scale, by the accumulation of senescent cells. In this framework, damaged cells can either undergo apoptosis or enter senescence. Apoptotic cells lead to compensatory proliferation, associated with an excess risk of cancer, whereas senescent cell accumulation leads to ageing‐related mortality. To test our framework, we build a deterministic model that first describes how cells get damaged, undergo apoptosis, or enter senescence. We then translate those cellular dynamics into a compound organismal survival metric also integrating life‐history traits. We address four different questions linked to our framework: can cellular senescence be adaptive, do the predictions of our model reflect epidemiological patterns observed among mammal species, what is the effect of species sizes on those answers, and what happens when senescent cells are removed? Importantly, we find that cellular senescence can optimize lifetime reproductive success. Moreover, we find that life‐history traits play an important role in shaping the cellular trade‐offs. Overall, we demonstrate that integrating cellular biology knowledge with eco‐evolutionary principles is crucial to solve parts of the cancer puzzle.

Abstract The tetraspanins CD9, CD81 and CD63 are major components of extracellular vesicles (EVs). Yet, their impact on EV composition remains under‐investigated. In the MCF7 breast cancer cell line CD63 was as expected predominantly intracellular. In contrast CD9 and CD81 strongly colocalized at the plasma membrane, albeit with different ratios at different sites, which may explain a higher enrichment of CD81 in EVs. Absence of these tetraspanins had little impact on the EV protein composition as analysed by quantitative mass spectrometry. We also analysed the effect of concomitant knock‐out of CD9 and CD81 because these two tetraspanins play similar roles in several cellular processes and associate directly with two Ig domain proteins, CD9P‐1/EWI‐F/PTGFRN and EWI‐2/IGSF8. These were the sole proteins significantly decreased in the EVs of double CD9‐ and CD81‐deficient cells. In the case of EWI‐2, this is primarily a consequence of a decreased cell expression level. In conclusion, this study shows that CD9, CD81 and CD63, commonly used as EV protein markers, play a marginal role in determining the protein composition of EVs released by MCF7 cells and highlights a regulation of the expression level and/or trafficking of CD9P‐1 and EWI‐2 by CD9 and CD81.

Abstract To document and halt biodiversity loss, monitoring, quantifying trends and assessing management and conservation strategies on wildlife populations and communities are crucial steps. With increasing technological innovations, more and more data are collected and new quantitative methods are constantly developed. These rapid developments come with an increasing need for analytical skills, which are hardly accessible to managers. On the other hand, researchers spend more and more time on research grant applications and administrative tasks, which leaves fewer opportunities for knowledge transfer. This situation tends to increase the gap between researchers and managers. Here, we illustrate how to fill this gap by presenting two long‐term collaborations between a research unit—Centre for Functional and Evolutionary Ecology; CEFE—and a national agency—French Biodiversity Agency; OFB. The first example is a collaboration providing statistical support to national parks for the design and implementation of scientific monitoring protocols. It relies on the recruitment of a research engineer funded by OFB and physically based at CEFE, who works closely with OFB and managers. The second example is a collaboration on the management of large carnivores. For more than 10 years, it has involved several PhD students and post‐doctoral fellows co‐supervised by CEFE and OFB, and has recently resulted in the recruitment of a permanent OFB researcher who works half‐time at CEFE and half‐time at OFB. These case studies illustrate the modalities of collaborative work between public institutions acting at different levels of biodiversity conservation for the co‐construction of research agendas and the exchange of knowledge. These collaborations also bring out some challenges. Inter‐knowledge and mutual learning remain difficult at scales larger than that of the teams concerned. The staff working at this interface needs to possess good listening skills, respect all partners' needs and demonstrate flexibility. Knowledge exchanges require time, thus reducing productivity according to quantitative metrics such as scientific publications or institutional reports. These collaborations can therefore be difficult to assume socially, and remain tenuous because they rely on a good understanding of the differences in governance of the various partners. Based on our experience, success is favoured by long‐term and close relationships, and by co‐construction of projects at early stage. Sharing a space (i.e. office or building) facilitates face‐to‐face interactions during planned work sessions and casual meetings that build up a shared scientific culture and mutual trust.

Abstract Angiotensin‐converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors and angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs) both inhibit the renin‐angiotensin system (RAS) but have different sites of action. Whether clinically meaningful differences exist is still debated. The authors set up a population‐based nationwide retrospective cohort study with at least 5 years of follow‐up based on the comprehensive French Health Insurance Database linked to the French hospital discharge database. Patients aged 50 or above, identified as ARB or ACE inhibitor new users in 2009 (at least one delivery during the year and no such delivery in 2008) were eligible. Exclusion criteria included history of cancer, cardiovascular disease, or chronic renal insufficiency. Main outcome measure was overall mortality. Secondary outcomes were cardiovascular deaths, major cardiovascular events, and major or other cardiovascular events. Out of 407 815 eligible patients, 233 682 (57%) were ARB users; two‐third had no previous exposure to antihypertensive drug. Based on propensity‐score based Cox model, ARB new user group had a better overall (HR: .878, 95%CI, .854 to .902), and cardiovascular (HR: .841, 95%CI, .800 to .84) survival and had a lower risk for major cardiovascular events (HR: .886, 95%CI, .868 to .905). Statistically significant quantitative interactions were detected with diabetes. Considering subgroup analyses, ARBs had a better survival than ACE inhibitors in nondiabetic patients.

Abstract Purpose Cortical porosis, secondary to either vascular injury or stress‐shielding, is a comorbidity of fracture fixation using compression bone plating. Locking plate constructs have unique mechanics of load transmission and lack of reliance on contact pressures for fixation stability, so secondary cortical porosis adjacent to the plate has not been widely investigated. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the effects of long‐term locking plate fixation on cortical dimensions and density in a caprine tibial segmental ostectomy model. Methods Data was acquired from a population of goats enrolled in ongoing orthopedic research which utilized locking plate fixation of 2 cm tibial diaphyseal segmental defects to evaluate bone healing over periods of 3, 6, 9, and 12 months. Quantitative data included tibial cortical width measurements and three‐dimensionally reconstructed slab density measurements, both assessed using computed tomographic examinations performed at the time of plate removal. Additional surgical and demographic variables were analyzed for effect on cortical widths and density, and all cis‐cortex measurements were compared to both the trans‐cortex and to the contralateral limbs. Results The tibial cis‐cortex was significantly wider and more irregular than the trans‐cortex at the same level. This width asymmetry differed in both magnitude and direction from the contralateral limb. The bone underlying the plate was significantly less dense than the trans‐cortex, and this cortical density difference was significantly greater than that of the contralateral limb. These cortical changes were independent of both duration of fixation and degree of ostectomy bone healing. Conclusions This study provides evidence that cortical bone loss consistent with cortical porosity is a comorbidity of locking plate fixation in a caprine tibial ostectomy model. Further research is necessary to identify risk factors for locking‐plate‐associated bone loss and to inform clinical decisions in cases necessitating long‐term locking plate fixation.

Abstract Purpose Locking plate fixation of caprine tibial segmental defects is widely utilized for translational modeling of human osteopathology, and it is a useful research model in tissue engineering and orthopedic biomaterials research due to its inherent stability while maintaining unobstructed visualization of the gap defect and associated healing. However, research regarding surgical technique and long‐term complications associated with this fixation method are lacking. The goal of this study was to assess the effects of surgeon‐selected factors including locking plate length, plate positioning, and relative extent of tibial coverage on fixation failure, in the form of postoperative fracture. Methods In vitro, the effect of plate length was evaluated using single cycle compressive load to failure mechanical testing of locking plate fixations of caprine tibial gap defects. In vivo, effects of plate length, positioning, and relative tibial coverage were evaluated using data from a population of goats enrolled in ongoing orthopedic research which utilized locking plate fixation of 2 cm tibial diaphyseal segmental defects to evaluate bone healing over 3, 6, 9, and 12 months. Results In vitro, no significant differences in maximum compressive load or total strain were noted between fixations using 14 cm locking plates and 18 cm locking plates. In vivo, both plate length and tibial coverage ratio were significantly associated with postoperative fixation failure. The incidence of any cortical fracture in goats stabilized with a 14 cm plate was 57%, as compared with 3% in goats stabilized with an 18 cm plate. Craniocaudal and mediolateral angular positioning variables were not significantly associated with fixation failure. Decreasing distance between the gap defect and the proximal screw of the distal bone segment was associated with increased incidence of fracture, suggesting an effect on proximodistal positioning on overall fixation stability. Conclusions This study emphasizes the differences between in vitro modeling and in vivo application of surgical fixation methods, and, based on the in vivo results, maximization of plate‐to‐tibia coverage is recommended when using locking plate fixation of the goat tibial segmental defect as a model in orthopedic research.

Abstract Aims Despite regularly updated guidelines, there is still a delay in referral of advanced heart failure patients to mechanical circulatory support and transplant centres. We aimed to analyse characteristics and outcome of non‐inotrope‐dependent patients implanted with a left ventricular assist device (LVAD). Methods and results The ASSIST‐ICD registry collected LVAD data in 19 centres in France between February 2006 and December 2016. We used data of patients in Interagency Registry for Mechanically Assisted Circulatory Support Classes 4–7. The primary endpoint was survival analysis. Predictors of mortality were searched with multivariable analyses. A total of 303 patients (mean age 61.0 ± 9.9 years, male sex 86.8%) were included in the present analysis. Ischaemic cardiomyopathy was the leading heart failure aetiology (64%), and bridge to transplantation was the main implantation strategy (56.1%). The overall likelihood of being alive while on LVAD support or having a transplant at 1, 2, 3, and 5 years was 66%, 61.7%, 58.7%, and 55.1%, respectively. Abstract Large carnivores play a pivotal regulating role in maintaining healthy and balanced ecosystems; however, most of them are rare and elusive, and knowledge about their resource consumption is scarce. Traditional methods based on morphological identification of undigested remains are labor intensive and often not sufficiently accurate, leading to errors and biased ecological inferences. Here, we developed a multi‐marker DNA metabarcoding approach to analyze the dietary diversity of giant otters (Pteronura brasiliensis) from fecal DNA while controlling predator species identity. We combined two mitochondrial markers, 12S rRNA and cytochrome c oxidase 1 (COI) gene, that target the full range of potential vertebrate and invertebrate prey. We compiled a local reference database of DNA barcodes for most potentially ingested fish, which were used to evaluate the specificity of the metabarcoding primers in silico. Most prey are identified at the species level (>90%) and the dietary profiles provided independently by the two markers are highly similar, whether in terms of list of prey or frequency of occurrences, hence validating the approach. We detected a higher number of rare fish prey with the 12S primers that amplified solely Teleost species while the degenerate COI primers revealed non‐fish prey (e.g., amphibians, snakes, birds, and earthworms) and confirmed predator species identity. This study demonstrated that scat DNA metabarcoding is particularly useful to provide in‐depth information on elusive carnivorous dietary profile. Our methodology opens up new opportunities to understand how top carnivores diet cope with the effects of anthropogenic alteration of ecosystems and identify conflicts with humans and livestock.

The current standard of care for colorectal cancer (CRC) is a combination of chemotherapeutics, often supplemented with targeted biological drugs. An urgent need exists for improved drug efficacy and minimized side effects, especially at late‐stage disease. We employed the phenotypically driven therapeutically guided multidrug optimization (TGMO) technology to identify optimized drug combinations (ODCs) in CRC. We identified low‐dose synergistic and selective ODCs for a panel of six human CRC cell lines also active in heterotypic 3D co‐culture models. Transcriptome sequencing and phosphoproteome analyses showed that the mechanisms of action of these ODCs converged toward MAP kinase signaling and cell cycle inhibition. Two cell‐specific ODCs were translated to in vivo mouse models. The ODCs reduced tumor growth by ~80%, outperforming standard chemotherapy (FOLFOX). No toxicity was observed for the ODCs, while significant side effects were induced in the group treated with FOLFOX therapy. Identified ODCs demonstrated significantly enhanced bioavailability of the individual components. Finally, ODCs were also active in primary cells from CRC patient tumor tissues. Taken together, we show that the TGMO technology efficiently identifies selective and potent low‐dose drug combinations, optimized regardless of tumor mutation status, outperforming conventional chemotherapy.

Abstract BRAF and MEKis have revolutionized the management of BRAFV600‐mutated melanoma patients. Left ventricular ejection fraction decrease (LVEF‐D) related to these treatments has not been thoroughly evaluated to date. The main objective of this study was to describe characteristics of LVEF‐D in melanoma patients treated with BRAF and/or MEKis. Abstract Systemic sclerosis patients with primary cardiac involvement can be reliably diagnosed by cardiac magnetic resonance imaging and are associated with a poor prognosis. This case report highlights the importance of considering heart transplantation in those patients as a lifesaving procedure.

Abstract Data and metadata products based on intensive terrestrial gravity measurements covering the Belgian territory have been established compliant to the new ISO19115‐1 profile for gravity‐related data. A short historical introduction on gravity measurements on the Belgian territory is presented, starting with the first gravity measurement in 1892. This paper focuses on gravity data acquired after 1971, which marks the adoption of IGSN71 as a reference for the world network by the International Association of Geodesy (IAG). Next to a complete dataset containing all Belgian gravity data, the available gravity data were reduced to the corresponding measurement campaign, enabling determination of specific metadata (e.g. used gravimeter, tide system parameters, time of acquisition, etc.). New gravity and spirit levelling measurements were executed by the Royal Observatory Belgium and the National Geographic Institute (Federal Mapping Agency) to validate the g‐value at the historical reference base station ‘Carte du Ciel’ in Brussels. Taking into account the instrumental errors and the varying ground water content, the retrieved data are validated and approved for use in further research.

Abstract Background Natural Killer (NK) cells are innate lymphoid cells that can be cytotoxic toward a large panel of solid tumors and hematological malignancies including chronic myeloid leukemia (CML). Such a cytotoxicity depends on various receptors. Killer immunoglobulin‐like receptors (KIR) belong to these receptors and are involved in maturation process, then in the activation abilities of NK cells. Methods: We investigated the prognostic impact of the KIR2DL5B genotype in 240 CML patients included in two clinical trials investigating tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKI) discontinuation: STIM and STIM2. Results: After adjustment for standard risk factors in CML, we found that the inhibitory receptor KIR2DL5B‐positive genotype was independently related to a delayed second deep molecular remission (HR 0.54, 95% CI [0.32‐0.91], P = 0.02) after TKI rechallenge but not to time to first deep molecular remission or treatment‐free remission rates. Conclusion: These results suggest that KIR2DL5B could carry a role in lymphocyte‐mediated control of leukemic residual disease control in patient with CML relapse.

Abstract The survival cost of reproduction has been revealed in many free‐ranging vertebrates. However, recent studies on captive populations failed to detect this cost. Theoretically, this lack of survival/reproduction trade‐off is expected when resources are not limiting, but these studies may have failed to detect the cost, as they may not have fully accounted for potential confounding effects, in particular interindividual heterogeneity. Here, we investigated the effects of current and past reproductive effort on later survival in captive females of a small primate, the gray mouse lemur. Survival analyses showed no cost of reproduction in females; and the pattern was even in the opposite direction: the higher the reproductive effort, the higher the chances of survival until the next reproductive event. These conclusions hold even while accounting for interindividual heterogeneity. In agreement with aforementioned studies on captive vertebrates, these results remind us that reproduction is expected to be traded against body maintenance and the survival prospect only when resources are so limiting that they induce an allocation trade‐off. Thus, the cost of reproduction has a major extrinsic component driven by environmental conditions.

Abstract Background and aims The occurrence rate of adverse events (AEs) related to care among hospitalized oncology patients in Switzerland remains unknown. The primary objective of this study was to describe, for the first time, the occurrence rate, type, severity of harm, and preventability of AEs related to care, reported in health records of hospitalized hematological and solid‐tumor cancer patients in three Swiss hospitals. Methods Using an adapted version of the validated Global Trigger Tool (GTT) from the Institute for Healthcare Improvement, we conducted a retrospective record review of patients discharged from oncology units over a 6‐week period during 2018. Our convenience sample included all records from adult patients (≥18 years of age), diagnosed with cancer, and hospitalized (>24 hours). Per the GTT method, two trained nurses independently assessed patient records to identify AEs using triggers, and physicians from the included units analyzed the consensus of the two nurses. Together, they assessed the severity and preventability of each AE. Results From the sample of 224 reviewed records, we identified 661 triggers and 169 AEs in 94 of them (42%). Pain related to care was the most frequent AE (n = 29), followed by constipation (n = 17). AEs rates were 75.4 per 100 admissions and 106.6 per 1000 patient days. Most of the identified AEs (78%) caused temporary harm to the patient and required an intervention. Among AEs during hospitalization (n = 125), 76 (61%) were considered not preventable, 28 (22%) preventable, and 21 (17%) undetermined. Conclusion About half of the hospitalized oncology patients suffered from at least one AE related to care during their hospitalization. Pain, constipation, and nosocomial infections were the most frequent AEs. It is, therefore, essential to identify AEs to guide future clinical practice initiatives to ensure patient safety.

Abstract Background Coronary stiffness represents a new paradigm for interventional cardiology and can be assessed by coronary pulse wave velocity (CoPWV). Assessing CoPWV is complex because of the coexistence of backward and forward waves. Objectives Evaluate the feasibility, repeatability, and capacity of methods assessing CoPWV to detect predictable velocity changes. Methods CoPWV was measured from distal and proximal pressure guidewires in the left anterior descending artery of 10 pigs under general anesthesia. Four methods were studied: the tangent intersection method applied to the forward (FW) and backward (BK) waves, as well as the dicrotic notch (DIC) and template matching (TM) methods. All were evaluated at baseline, during various arterial pressure and heart rate conditions, during simulated flow limitation (balloon inflation), and after increasing coronary stiffness (stent insertion). Results All the methods were significantly different between them (p ≤ .05) showing a systematic trend toward higher CoPWV when compared to the FW method (.05
