5. Subjective Well-Being of Rural Adults 75 Years of Age or Older: A Longitudinal Evaluation

Abstract

This study examined a combination offactors that influence subjective well-beingofrural adults in late old age and compared factors influencing subjective well-being across time. A 12-year follow-up study revealed a small, but highly reliable drop in morale for the sample as a whole. Personal competencyfactors, health, and perceived economic adequacy were most important to explaining morale at both Time 1 and Time 2. Social interaction emerged as relatively more important to subjective well-being at Time 2. Individual change in morale was highlighted by identifying variables that distinguished persons who declined on morale versus those whose morale was stable or improved. Persons who remained married at Time 2 were more likely to have declined on morale. This finding was possibly due to reduced social interaction and caregiving.

Abstract

The objective of the study was to examine the use of videotape as a modeling and as a feedback device in skills-based interpersonal communication courses. Videotapes were made of students as they demonstrated self-disclosure and empathic listening skills at the begin ning and at the end of a university family relations course. Students in one section were videotaped during the course, allowed to view their own tapes, and received feedback on their use of the skills. Another section viewed videotapes of other students demonstrating the skills, but were not given an opportunity to view themselves on videotape. A third section served as the control group and did not receive any instruction with videotape. Significant increases in skills performance at post-test were observed in all three groups. The treatment group that viewed modeling of communication skills via videotape had higher performance levels on both empathy and self-disclosure than either the control or videofeed back sections. The findings of the study demonstrated the effectiveness of teaching com munication skills and the effectiveness of video modeling of skills as a teaching technique. Factors that might contribute to higher anxiety among students who receive videofeedback are discussed and future research needs are presented.

Abstract

This study examined the instrumental and social-emotional support provided by families to the primary caregivers of Alzheimer's patients. It was anticipated that the more adequate the support provided by the family, the less sense of burden and the better the coping effectiveness of the caregiver. Ratings of instrumental assistance, social-emotional support, adequacy of support, and coping effectiveness were made by trained raters from transcribed interviews with 23 primary caregivers. Also, a second family member who was usually next closest of kin to the caregiver was interviewed in order to provide another perspective of the support the family provided. While the major caregiving tasks were performed by the primary caregiver, the types of assistance from family that seemed most appreciated were visits and having persons stay with the patient so that the caregiver could take a trip, rest, run errands, or get out of the house for social activities. The majority of caregivers felt a high degree of support from their families and reported low levels of emotional upset resulting from family support efforts. The most common family problems reported were lack of visits, disagreement over level of patient's mental and physical functioning, and disagreement over the type of care required. The data confirmed the hypothesis that family support was positively associated with the caregiver's coping effectiveness. In addition, caregivers who did not receive enough support were most burdened; however, the group receiving the greatest amount of support was the next most burdened, a finding which was unanticipated.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)
