Wearable personal protective equipment that is decorated with photoactive self-cleaning materials capable of actively neutralizing biological pathogens is in high demand. Here, we developed a series of solution-processable, crystalline porous materials capable of addressing this challenge. Textiles coated with these materials exhibit a broad range of functionalities, including spontaneous reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation upon absorption of daylight, and long-term ROS storage in dark conditions. The ROS generation and storage abilities of these materials can be further improved through chemical engineering of the precursors without altering the three-dimensional assembled superstructures. Hierarchically ordered porous materials with tailored and inter-connected macro-, meso-, and micro-pores would facilitate the heterogeneous adsorption and catalysis processes for a wide range of applications but remain a challenge for synthetic chemists. Here, a general and efficient strategy for the synthesis of inverse opal metal-organic frameworks (IO MOFs) with a tunable size of macro-, meso-, and micro-pores is reported. The strategy is based on the step-wise template formation, precursor infiltration, solvo-thermal reaction, and chemical etching. As a proof of the general applicability of this strategy, a series of inverse opal zirconium-based MOFs with intrinsic micro- and/or meso-pores, including UiO-66, MOF-808, NU-1200, NU-1000 and PCN-777, and tunable macropores (1 µm, 2 µm, 3 µm, 5 µm, and 10 µm), have been prepared with outstanding yields. These IO MOFs demonstrate significantly enhanced absorption rates and faster initial hydrolysis rates for organophosphorus (OPs) aggregates compared to those of the pristine MOFs. This work paves the way for the further development of hierarchically ordered MOFs for advanced applications.

The efficient fixation of excess CO2 from the atmosphere to yield value-added chemicals remains crucial in response to the increasing levels of carbon emission. Coupling enzymatic reactions with electrochemical regeneration of cofactors is a promising technique for fixing CO2 , while producing biomass which can be further transformed into biofuels. Herein, a bioelectrocatalytic system was established by depositing crystallites of a mesoporous metal-organic framework (MOF), termed NU-1006, containing formate dehydrogenase, on a fluorine-doped tin oxide glass electrode modified with Cp*Rh(2,2'-bipyridyl-5,5'-dicarboxylic acid)Cl2 complex. This system converts CO2 into formic acid at a rate of 79±3.4 mm h-1 with electrochemical regeneration of the nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide cofactor. The MOF-enzyme composite exhibited significantly higher catalyst stability when subjected to non-native conditions compared to the free enzyme, doubling the formic acid yield.

99 Tc contamination at legacy nuclear sites is a serious and unsolved environmental issue. The selective remediation of 99 TcO4 - in the presence of a large excess of NO3 - and SO4 2- from natural waste systems represents a significant scientific and technical challenge, since anions with a higher charge density are often preferentially sorbed by traditional anion-exchange materials. We present a solution to this challenge based on a stable cationic metal-organic framework, SCU-102 (Ni2 (tipm)3 (NO3 )4 ), which exhibits fast sorption kinetics, a large capacity (291 mg g-1 ), a high distribution coefficient, and, most importantly, a record-high TcO4 - uptake selectivity. This material can almost quantitatively remove TcO4 - in the presence of a large excess of NO3 - and SO4 2- . Decontamination experiments confirm that SCU-102 represents the optimal Tc scavenger with the highest reported clean-up efficiency, while first-principle simulations reveal that the origin of the selectivity is the recognition of TcO4 - by the hydrophobic pockets of the structure.

We describe an example of "interpenetration isomerism" in three-dimensional hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks. By exploiting the crystallization conditions for a peripherally extended triptycene H6 PET, we can modulate the interpenetration of the assembled frameworks, yielding a two-fold interpenetrated structure PETHOF-1 and a five-fold interpenetrated structure PETHOF-2 as interpenetration isomers. In PETHOF-1, two individual nets are related by inversion symmetry and form an interwoven topology with a large guest-accessible volume of about 80 %. In PETHOF-2, five individual nets are related by translational symmetry and are stacked in an alternating fashion. The activated materials show permanent porosity with Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface areas exceeding 1100 m2 g-1 . Synthetic control over the framework interpenetration could serve as a new strategy to construct complex supramolecular architectures from simple organic building blocks.

Single atoms and few-atom clusters of platinum are uniformly installed on the zirconia nodes of a metal-organic framework (MOF) NU-1000 via targeted vapor-phase synthesis. The catalytic Pt clusters, site-isolated by organic linkers, are shown to exhibit high catalytic activity for ethylene hydrogenation while exhibiting resistance to sintering up to 200 °C. In situ IR spectroscopy reveals the presence of both single atoms and few-atom clusters that depend upon synthesis conditions. Operando X-ray absorption spectroscopy and X-ray pair distribution analyses reveal unique changes in chemical bonding environment and cluster size stability while on stream. Density functional theory calculations elucidate a favorable reaction pathway for ethylene hydrogenation with the novel catalyst. These results provide evidence that atomic layer deposition (ALD) in MOFs is a versatile approach to the rational synthesis of size-selected clusters, including noble metals, on a high surface area support.

Post-synthetic modification of the zirconium-based metal-organic framework (MOF) NU-1000 by atomic layer deposition (ALD), using tetramethoxysilane (Si(OMe)4 ) as a precursor, led to the incorporation and stabilization of silicon oxide clusters composed of only a few silicon atoms in the framework's pores. The resulting SiOx functionalized material (Si-NU-1000) was found to be catalytically active despite the inactivity of related bulk silicon dioxide (SiO2 ), thus demonstrating the positive effects of having nanosized clusters of SiOx . Moreover, Si-NU-1000 showed activity greater than that found for aluminum oxide based catalysts-oxides known for their high acidity-such as an aluminum oxide functionalized MOF (Al-NU-1000) and bulk γ-Al2 O3 . X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and infrared spectroscopy measurements unmasked the electron donating nature of Si-NU-1000, explaining the unusual electronic properties of the nanosized SiOx clusters and supporting their high catalytic activity.

A fullerene-based photosensitizer is incorporated postsynthetically into a Zr6 -based MOF, NU-1000, for enhanced singlet oxygen production. The structural organic linkers in the MOF platform also act as photosensitizers which contribute to the overall generation of singlet oxygen from the material under UV irradiation. The singlet oxygen generated by the MOF/fullerene material is shown to oxidize sulfur mustard selectively to the less toxic bis(2-chloroethyl)sulfoxide with a half-life of only 11 min.

Owing to their high surface area, periodic distribution of metal sites, and water stability, zirconium-based metal-organic frameworks (Zr6 -MOFs) have shown promising activity for the hydrolysis of nerve agents GD and VX, as well as the simulant, dimethyl 4-nitrophenylphosphate (DMNP), in buffered solutions. A hurdle to using MOFs for this application is the current need for a buffer solution. Here the destruction of the simulant DMNP, as well as the chemical warfare agents (GD and VX) through hydrolysis using a MOF catalyst mixed with a non-volatile, water-insoluble, heterogeneous buffer is reported. The hydrolysis of the simulant and nerve agents in the presence of the heterogeneous buffer was fast and effective.

A complete structure and composition evolution of a pillared-paddlewheel metal-organic framework was achieved using a combination of solvent-assisted linker exchange (SALE) and node transmetalation. In this example, each building unit – the di-topic carboxylate strut, the di-topic nitrogen-based pillar, and the di-zinc node – of the original metal-organic framework is replaced in sequential fashion to produce a nickel-based daughter metal-organic framework with entirely different components.

Au nanoparticles of size 2.2 nm were encapsulated in a zeolitic imidazolate framework ZIF-8 framework (Au@ZIF-8). The composite was used as a catalyst for the selective hydrogenation of crotonaldehyde to crotyl alcohol with 90–95 % selectivity. Hydrogenation of 1-hexene yielded n-hexane in approximately the same conversion as crotonaldehyde, whereas cis-cyclohexene did not detectably react. To account for the confined environment of the ZIF, we supported Au nanoparticles on the outside of ZIF-8 (Au/ZIF-8). Using Au/ZIF-8 as a catalyst, 1-hexene and cis-cyclohexene were hydrogenated in low conversion whereas crotonaldehyde would only react at higher pressures in 70 % selectivity towards crotyl alcohol. Post-experiment TEM analysis of Au/ZIF-8 showed significant sintering whereas the median particle size of Au@ZIF-8 remained almost unchanged. Au@ZIF-8 was recycled as a catalyst for the hydrogenation of crotonaldehyde three times without significant loss of activity or selectivity.

A nerve-agent simulant based on a phosphate ester is hydrolyzed using a MOF-based catalyst. Suspensions of MOF-808 (6-connected), a material featuring 6-connected zirconium nodes, display the highest hydrolysis rates among all MOFs that have been reported to date. A plug-flow reactor was also prepared with MOF-808 (6-connected) as the active layer. Deployed in a simple filtration scheme, the reactor displayed high hydrolysis efficiency and reusability.

We present a systematic study of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) for the storage of oxygen. The study starts with grand canonical Monte Carlo simulations on a suite of 10 000 MOFs for the adsorption of oxygen. From these data, the MOFs were down selected to the prime candidates of HKUST-1 (Cu-BTC) and NU-125, both with coordinatively unsaturated Cu sites. Oxygen isotherms up to 30 bar were measured at multiple temperatures to determine the isosteric heat of adsorption for oxygen on each MOF by fitting to a Toth isotherm model. High pressure (up to 140 bar) oxygen isotherms were measured for HKUST-1 and NU-125 to determine the working capacity of each MOF. Compared to the zeolite NaX and Norit activated carbon, NU-125 has an increased excess capacity for oxygen of 237 % and 98 %, respectively. These materials could ultimately prove useful for oxygen storage in medical, military, and aerospace applications.

Electrophoretic deposition (EPD) is used to assemble metal-organic framework (MOF) materials in nano- and micro-particulate, thin-film form. The flexibility of the method is demonstrated by the successful deposition of 4 types of MOFs: NU-1000, UiO-66, HKUST-1, and Al-MIL-53. Additionally, EPD is used to pattern the growth of NU-1000 thin films that exhibit full electrochemical activity.

Metall-organische Geruste (MOFs) sind Hybridmaterialien, die anhaltendes Interesse auf sich ziehen – nicht zuletzt wegen vielfaltiger moglicher Anwendungen, von der Gastrennung uber die Katalyse bis hin zum Sammeln von Licht. Allerdings ist die De-novo-Synthese von MOFs mit gewunschten Eigenschaften nicht immer einfach: unerwunschte Topologien konnen entstehen, die Loslichkeit von Vorstufen kann zu gering sein, und die Funktionalitat wichtiger Netzwerkkomponenten kann verlorengehen. Mit einem neuen Ansatz – dem losungsmittelunterstutzten Linker-Austausch (“solvent-assisted linker exchange”, SALE) – lassen sich diese Probleme umgehen, und tatsachlich wurden mit SALE bereits verschiedene MOF-Materialien erzeugt, die durch direkte Syntheseverfahren nicht erhaltlich waren. Unsere Ubersicht beschreibt Forschungsergebnisse uber MOFs, die erst durch SALE moglich gemacht wurden, und diskutiert Studien, die das Verstandnis dieses Verfahrens verbessert und sein Anwendungsgebiet erweitert haben.

Patterned metal-organic framework, ZIF-8 thin films can be generated by using standard photolithography or via selective growth with the aid of microcontact printing. The alternate chemical deposition (of ZIF-8) and physical deposition (of metallic materials) allow the insertion of metal layers in the ZIF-8 film that could serve as multifunctional chemical sensors for vapors and gases.

The excellent sorption kinetics, reversibility, and guest-induced changes in the MOF structure and/or properties make them intriguing candidates, in particular, for sensing. However, only a few of these changes (mainly luminescence quenching) have been explored for sensing purposes due to their small magnitude or the diffi culty in their measurement. Integrating MOFs into devices will allow the measurement of these changes due to the uptake of guest molecules. [ 6 ] For example, the effective refractive index of a MOF should be sensitive to volatile molecules due to pore fi lling. This can lead to MOF-based optical devices for sensing these guest molecules. Here, we report an approach based on MOF-enshrouded colloidal crystals. Elsewhere we have described MOF-based sensors that rely upon the refractive-index modulation of Fabry–Perot interference peaks or localized surface plasmon extinction peaks. [ 7 ]

A new, twofold interpenetrated metal-organic framework (MOF) material has been synthesized that demonstrates dramatic steps in the adsorption and hysteresis in the desorption of CO(2). Measurement of the structure by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) and pair distribution function (PDF) analysis indicates that structural changes upon CO(2) sorption most likely involve the interpenetrated frameworks moving with respect to each other.

A critical review of the emerging field of MOFs for photon collection and subsequent energy transfer is presented. Discussed are examples involving MOFs for (a) light harvesting, using (i) MOF-quantum dots and molecular chromophores, (ii) chromophoric MOFs, and (iii) MOFs with light-harvesting properties, and (b) energy transfer, specifically via the (i) Forster energy transfer and (ii) Dexter exchange mechanism.

Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) are hybrid porous materials with many potential applications, which intimately depend on the presence of chemical functionality either at the organic linkers and/or at the metal nodes. Functionality that cannot be introduced into MOFs directly via de novo syntheses can be accessed through post-synthesis modification (PSM) on the reactive moieties of the linkers and/or nodes without disrupting the metal–linker bonds. Even more intriguing methods that go beyond PSM are herein termed building block replacement (BBR) which encompasses (i) solvent-assisted linker exchange (SALE), (ii) non-bridging ligand replacement, and (iii) transmetalation. These one-step or tandem BBR processes involve exchanging key structural components of the MOF, which in turn should allow for the evolution of protoMOF structures (i.e., the utilization of a parent MOF as a template) to design MOFs composed of completely new components, presumably via single crystal to single crystal transformations. The influence of building block replacement on the stability and properties of MOFs will be discussed, and some insights into their mechanistic aspects are provided. Future perspectives providing a glimpse into how these techniques can lead to various unexplored areas of MOF chemistry are also presented.

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have gained considerable attention as hybrid materials-in part because of a multitude of potential useful applications, ranging from gas separation to catalysis and light harvesting. Unfortunately, de novo synthesis of MOFs with desirable function-property combinations is not always reliable and may suffer from vagaries such as formation of undesirable topologies, low solubility of precursors, and loss of functionality of the sensitive network components. The recently discovered synthetic approach coined solvent-assisted linker exchange (SALE) constitutes a simple to implement strategy for circumventing these setbacks; its use has already led to the generation of a variety of MOF materials previously unobtainable by direct synthesis methods. This Review provides a perspective of the achievements in MOF research that have been made possible with SALE and examines the studies that have facilitated the understanding and broadened the scope of use of this invaluable synthetic tool.

Gaining control over the assembly of mesoporous Zr-based metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) with modifiable metal nodes remains a challenge. The the topology is intriguing, particularly if considering postsynthetic modification, as it presents large sodalite-like cages surrounded by 12 interconnected 1D channels that allow for efficient diffusion of guest molecules throughout the structure. Herein, we demonstrate the first Zr MOF with the topology, NU-1200, which was synthesized by controlling the geometry of the organic building unit. In addition, by using NU-1200 as a platform, we perform solvent-assisted metal incorporation to form single-site metalated nodes, a process that is characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction.

Aromatic polyhedral boranes and carboranes lend themselves to the construction of nanoesque structures suited for unique applications. These include cyclic, water-soluble hosts having a lipophilic core; self-assembling nanorods and bilayer membranes using amphiphilic carborane derivatives; and the huge family of functional structures obtainable from the [closo-B 1 2 (OH) 1 2 ] 2 - by derivatization of the hydroxyl groups. The latter species are potentially useful for molecular delivery devices important to biomedicine and material science. New developments in each of these areas of interest will be presented.
