Abstract

International audience; Histone Gene Cluster 1 Member E, HIST1H1E, encodes Histone H1.4, is one of a family of epigenetic regulator genes, acts as a linker histone protein, and is responsible for higher order chromatin structure. HIST1H1E syndrome (also known as Rahman syndrome, OMIM #617537) is a recently described intellectual disability (ID) syndrome. Since the initial description of five unrelated individuals with three different heterozygous protein-truncating variants (PTVs) in the HIST1H1E gene in 2017, we have recruited 30 patients, all with HIST1H1E PTVs that result in the same shift in frame and that cluster to a 94-base pair region in the HIST1H1E carboxy terminal domain. The identification of 30 patients with HIST1H1E variants has allowed the clarification of the HIST1H1E syndrome phenotype. Major findings include an ID and a recognizable facial appearance. ID was reported in all patients and is most frequently of moderate severity. The facial gestalt consists of a high frontal hairline and full lower cheeks in early childhood and, in later childhood and adulthood, affected individuals have a strikingly high frontal hairline, frontal bossing, and deep-set eyes. Other associated clinical features include hypothyroidism, abnormal dentition, behavioral issues, cryptorchidism, skeletal anomalies, and cardiac anomalies. Brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is frequently abnormal with a slender corpus callosum a frequent finding.

Abstract

International audience; The temperature response of photosynthesis is one of the key factors determining predicted responses to warming in global vegetation models (GVMs). The response may vary geographically, owing to genetic adaptation to climate, and temporally, as a result of acclimation to changes in ambient temperature. Our goal was to develop a robust quantitative global model representing acclimation and adaptation of photosynthetic temperature responses. We quantified and modelled key mechanisms responsible for photosynthetic temperature acclimation and adaptation using a global dataset of photosynthetic CO2 response curves, including data from 141 C3 species from tropical rainforest to Arctic tundra. We separated temperature acclimation and adaptation processes by considering seasonal and common‐garden datasets, respectively. The observed global variation in the temperature optimum of photosynthesis was primarily explained by biochemical limitations to photosynthesis, rather than stomatal conductance or respiration. We found acclimation to growth temperature to be a stronger driver of this variation than adaptation to temperature at climate of origin. We developed a summary model to represent photosynthetic temperature responses and showed that it predicted the observed global variation in optimal temperatures with high accuracy. This novel algorithm should enable improved prediction of the function of global ecosystems in a warming climate.

Abstract

Procedural noise functions are widely used in Computer Graphics, from off-line rendering in movie production to interactive video games. The ability to add complex and intricate details at low memory and authoring cost is one of its main attractions. This survey is motivated by the inherent importance of noise in graphics, the widespread use of noise in industry, and the fact that many recent research developments justify the need for an up-to-date survey. Our goal is to provide both a valuable entry point into the field of procedural noise functions, as well as a comprehensive view of the field to the informed reader. In this report, we cover procedural noise functions in all their aspects. We outline recent advances in research on this topic, discussing and comparing recent and well established methods. We first formally define procedural noise functions based on stochastic processes and then classify and review existing procedural noise functions. We discuss how procedural noise functions are used for modeling and how they are applied to surfaces. We then introduce analysis tools and apply them to evaluate and compare the major approaches to noise generation. Abstract

International audience; Converging lines of evidence suggest that synaptic plasticity at auditory inputs to the lateral amygdala (LA) is critical for the formation and storage of auditory fear memories. Auditory information reaches the LA from both thalamic and cortical areas, raising the question of whether they make distinct contributions to fear memory storage. Here we address this by comparing the induction of long-term potentation (LTP) at the two inputs in vivo in anesthetized rats. We first show, using field potential measurements, that different patterns and frequencies of high-frequency stimulation (HFS) consistently elicit stronger LTP at cortical inputs than at thalamic inputs. Field potential responses elicited during HFS of thalamic inputs were also smaller than responses during HFS of cortical inputs, suggesting less effective postsynaptic depolarization. Pronounced differences in the short-term plasticity profiles of the two inputs were also observed: whereas cortical inputs displayed paired-pulse facilitation, thalamic inputs displayed paired-pulse depression. These differences in short- and long-term plasticity were not due to stronger inhibition at thalamic inputs: although removal of inhibition enhanced responses to HFS, it did not enhance thalamic LTP and left paired-pulse depression unaffected. These results highlight the divergent nature of short- and long-term plasticity at thalamic and cortical sensory inputs to the LA, pointing to their different roles in the fear learning system.

Abstract

Article first published online: 27 November 2008 This paper studies the population dynamics of multiple preference traits in a model of intergenerational cultural transmission. Parents socialize and transmit their preferences to their children with endogenous intensities. Populations concentrated on a single cultural group are in general not stable. There is a unique stable stationary distribution, and it supports two or more cultural groups, in particular those with greater intolerance with respect to others' traits. The larger the heterogeneity of intolerance levels across cultural groups, the smaller the number of traits that are supported in the stable stationary distribution.

Abstract

The paper explores a game-theoretic model of petty corruption involving a sequence of entrepreneurs and a track of bureaucrats. Each entrepreneur's project is approved if and only if it is cleared by each bureaucrat. The project value is stochastic; its value is observed only by the entrepreneur, but its distribution is common knowledge. Each bureaucrat clears the project only if a bribe is paid. The bribe for qualified projects ("extortion") and unqualified projects ("capture") may differ. We identify the nature and welfare implications of different types of equilibria under appropriate technical assumptions on the structure of the game.

Abstract

We construct series solutions to all orders for breathers of Klein-Gordon equations, in powers of an amplitude parameter epsilon, under a sign condition on the coefficients of the expansion of the nonlinearity. All terms may be computed thanks to the properties of a 1D Schr\"odinger equation with two-soliton potential. We prove that this series is free of poles in the unit disc of the complex epsilon plane if and only if the equation is essentially equivalent to the sine-Gordon equation. This appears to be the only result that explains both what makes the sine-Gordon equation special from a PDE point of view, and at the same time, why approximate, long-lived breathers exist. In a related paper (Classical and Quantum Gravity, 25 (2008) 245004 ) we have extended this approach to address the soliton star problem in General Relativity.

Abstract

International audience; Receptor tyrosine kinases (RTKs) are key regulators of cellular functions in metazoans. In vertebrates, RTKs are mostly activated by polypeptides but are not naturally sensitive to amino acids or light. Taking inspiration from Venus kinase receptors (VKRs), an atypical family of RTKs found in nature, we have transformed the human insulin (hIR) and hepatocyte growth factor receptor (hMET) into glutamate receptors by replacing their extracellular binding domains with the ligand-binding domain of metabotropic glutamate receptor type 2 (mGluR2). We then imparted light sensitivity through covalent attachment of a synthetic glutamate-based photoswitch via a self-labelling SNAP tag. By employing a Xenopus laevis oocyte kinase activity assay, we demonstrate how these chimeric RTKs, termed light-controlled human insulin receptor (LihIR) and light-controlled human MET receptor (LihMET), can be used to exert optical control over the insulin or MET signaling pathways. Our results outline a potentially general strategy to convert RTKs into photo-receptors.

Abstract

We show that time-to-build, which creates a lag between the decision to invest and production, is an important element of industry structure. We study a multiperiod investment game where there is demand uncertainty. Adding time-to-build to the model alters the classic tradeoff between making strategic commitments and exploiting the option to wait. Furthermore, time-to-build gives rise to novel equilibria in which firms invest incrementally, which contrasts with most prior work on multiperiod investment games in which firms invest only once. We show how time-to-build affects firm heterogeneity, investment timing, the option value of waiting, the evolution of prices, and social welfare. Copyright 2003 by the RAND Corporation.

International audience; ScopeNɛ-Carboxymethyl-lysine (CML) is a prominent advanced glycation end-product which is not only found in vivo but also in food. It is known that a percentage of the dietary CML (dCML) is absorbed into the circulation and only partly excreted in the urine. Several studies have tried to measure how much dCML remains in tissues. However obstacles to interpreting the data have been found.Methods and resultsA new protocol which discriminates dCML from native CML (nCML) has been developed. Three CML isotopes with different mass-to-charge ratios were used: nCML Nε-carboxymethyl-L-lysine, dCML Nε-[13C]carboxy[13C]methyl-L-lysine and internal standard Nε-carboxymethyl-L-[4,4,5,5-2H4]lysine. Wild-type (n = 7) and RAGE−/− (n = 8) mice were fed for 30 days with either a control, or a BSA-bound dCML-enriched diet. Organs were analyzed for nCML and dCML using liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry. Mice exposed to dCML showed an accumulation in all tissues tested except fat. Abstract

International audience; Magnetic and fluorescent assemblies of iron-oxide nanoparticles (NPs) were constructed by threading a viologen-based ditopic ligand, DPV2+, into the cavity of cucurbituril (CB[7]) macrocycles adsorbed on the surface of the NPs. Evidence for the formation of 1:2 inclusion complexes that involve DPV2+ and two CB[7] macrocycles was first obtained in solution by 1H NMR and emission spectroscopy. DPV2+ was found to induce self-assembly of nanoparticle arrays (DPV2+⊂CB[7]NPs) by bridging CB[7] molecules on different NPs. The resulting viologen-crosslinked iron-oxide nanoparticles exhibited increased saturation magnetization and emission properties. This facile supramolecular approach to NP self-assembly provides a platform for the synthesis of smart and innovative materials that can achieve a high degree of functionality and complexity and that are needed for a wide range of applications.
