Abstract Background Despite advances in screening and therapy, breast cancer (BC) remains the predominant cancer in women globally. Dysregulation of microRNAs (miRNAs) is pivotal in carcinogenesis across various cancers, including BC. Evidence indicates that miR‐1307‐3p is upregulated in BC tumors, yet its target genes are not fully elucidated. This study aimed to explore how miR‐1307‐3p regulates BC proliferation, migration, invasion, and angiogenesis and to identify potential target genes. Methods Basal miR‐1307‐3p levels were quantified in BC cell lines MDA‐MB‐231 and MCF‐7, as well as MCF‐10A using quantitative real‐time reverse transcription‐PCR (RT‐qPCR). The impact of miR‐1307‐3p inhibition on BC cell proliferation, migration, invasion, and angiogenesis was assessed. Nine miRNA‐target prediction databases identified potential miR‐1307‐3p targets. Target expression was validated using RT‐qPCR, Western blot, and dual‐luciferase reporter assays. MiR‐1307‐3p was overexpressed in MDA‐MB‐231 and MCF‐7 compared to MCF‐10A. Results Inhibiting miR‐1307‐3p significantly reduced BC cell proliferation, migration, invasion, and angiogenesis. Bioinformatics analysis identified 17 potential miR‐1307‐3p targets, with protamine 2 (PRM2) overexpression confirmed via Western blot and dual‐luciferase assays. Conclusion MiR‐1307‐3p overexpression in BC promotes proliferation, migration, invasion, and angiogenesis. PRM2 emerges as a novel miR‐1307‐3p target in BC.

Abstract Anaphylactic reactions at the time of chimeric antigen receptor T (CAR‐T) cell infusion are adverse events that have not been reported in pivotal clinical trials or in real‐world series. We report the case of patient with severe anaphylaxis with cardiac arrest after tisagenlecleucel injection for Diffuse Large B cell Lymphoma, who recovered after resuscitation and intensive care treatment; we also conducted a Food and Drug Administration Adverse Event Reporting System database analysis and found several cases of severe anaphlyaxis after CAR‐T cell injection. Although not reported in pivotal CAR‐T cell studies, anaphylaxis can occur after CAR‐T cell injection, highlighting the need to include anaphylaxis as a possible side effect in future studies.

Background Lipoprotein (a) is an independent risk factor for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. However, lipoprotein (a) testing remains variable and it is unclear what factors influence testing and if testing changes clinical management. Methods and Results A retrospective study using electronic medical record data from 5 health systems identified an atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease cohort divided into those with and without a lipoprotein (a) test between 2019 and 2021. Baseline characteristics and lipid‐lowering therapy patterns were assessed. Multivariable regression modeling was used to determine factors associated with lipoprotein (a) testing. Among 595 684 patients with atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, only 2587 (0.4%) were tested for lipoprotein (a). Those who were older or Black individuals were less likely to have lipoprotein (a) testing, while those with familial hypercholesterolemia, ischemic stroke/transient ischemic attack, peripheral artery disease, prior lipid‐lowering therapy, or low‐density lipoprotein cholesterol ≥130 mg/dL were more likely to be tested. Abstract Background Hyperactivity and inattention, the symptoms of ADHD, are marked by high levels of heritability and intergenerational transmission. Two distinct pathways of genetic intergenerational transmission are distinguished: direct genetic transmission when parental genetic variants are passed to the child's genome and genetic nurture when the parental genetic background contributes to the child's outcomes through rearing environment. This study assessed genetic contributions to hyperactivity and inattention in childhood through these transmission pathways. Methods The sample included 415 families from the Quebec Newborn Twin Study. Twins' hyperactivity and inattention were assessed in early childhood by parents and in primary school by teachers. The polygenic scores for ADHD (ADHD‐PGS) and educational attainment (EA‐PGS) were computed from twins' and parents' genotypes. A model of intergenerational transmission was developed to estimate (1) the contributions of parents' and children's PGS to the twins' ADHD symptoms and (2) whether these variances were explained by genetic transmission and/or genetic nurture. Results ADHD‐PGS explained up to 1.6% of the variance of hyperactivity and inattention in early childhood and primary school. EA‐PGS predicted ADHD symptoms at both ages, explaining up to 1.6% of the variance in early childhood and up to 5.5% in primary school. Genetic transmission was the only significant transmission pathway of both PGS. The genetic nurture channeled through EA‐PGS explained up to 3.2% of the variance of inattention in primary school but this association was non‐significant. Conclusions Genetic propensities to ADHD and education predicted ADHD symptoms in childhood, especially in primary school. Its intergenerational transmission was driven primarily by genetic variants passed to the child, rather than by environmentally mediated parental genetic effects. The model developed in this study can be leveraged in future research to investigate genetic transmission and genetic nurture while accounting for parental assortative mating.

Abstract Tree regeneration is a key process in forest dynamics, particularly in the context of forest resilience and climate change. Models are pivotal for assessing long‐term forest dynamics, and they have been in use for more than 50 years. However, there is a need to evaluate their capacity to accurately represent tree regeneration. We assess how well current models capture the overall abundance, species composition, and mortality of tree regeneration. Using 15 models built to capture long‐term forest dynamics at the stand, landscape, and global levels, we simulate tree regeneration at 200 sites representing large environmental gradients across Central Europe. The results are evaluated against extensive data from unmanaged forests. Most of the models overestimate recruitment levels, which is compensated only in some models by high simulated mortality rates in the early stages of individual‐tree dynamics. Simulated species diversity of recruitment generally matches observed ranges. Models simulating higher stand‐level species diversity do not feature higher species diversity in the recruitment layer. The effect of light availability on recruitment levels is captured better than the effects of temperature and soil moisture, but patterns are not consistent across models. Increasing complexity in the tree regeneration modules is not related to higher accuracy of simulated tree recruitment. Furthermore, individual model design is more important than scale (stand, landscape, and global) and approach (empirical and process‐based) for accurately capturing tree regeneration. Despite the mismatches between simulation results and data, it is remarkable that most models capture the essential features of the highly complex process of tree regeneration, while not having been parameterized with such data. We conclude that much can be gained by evaluating and refining the modeling of tree regeneration processes. This has the potential to render long‐term projections of forest dynamics under changing environmental conditions much more robust.

Abstract Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is characterized by chronic intermittent hypoxemia, which is associated with progressive loss of kidney function, where postprandial fluctuations in renal physiology may further compromise oxygen supply and kidney function. Therefore, we measured biomarkers of acute kidney injury (AKI) following a high‐fat meal with and without intermittent hypoxemia. Eighteen healthy young men (mean age [SD]: 22.7 years [3.1]) and seven middle‐aged to older individuals with OSA (54.4 years [6.4]) consumed a high‐fat meal during normoxia or intermittent hypoxemia (~15 hypoxic cycles per hour, ~85% oxyhemoglobin saturation) for 6 h. We observed no changes in estimated glomerular filtration rate and plasma concentrations of creatinine, neutrophil gelatinase‐associated lipocalin (NGAL), and kidney injury molecule‐1 (KIM‐1) at any measured time points. In both groups, plasma concentrations of interleukin‐18 (IL‐18) increased after 6 h during normoxia only (p = 0.033, ηp2 = 0.122), and plasma concentrations of liver‐type fatty acid‐binding protein (L‐FABP) transiently decreased after 3 h in both conditions (p = 0.008, ηp2 = 0.152). These findings indicate that AKI biomarkers are not acutely elevated during the postprandial state with or without intermittent hypoxemia, suggesting that other mechanisms may play more important roles in the progression of kidney disease in OSA.

Abstract Though tropical cyclone (TC) models have been routinely evaluated against track and intensity observations, little work has been performed to validate modeled TC wind fields over land. In this paper, we present a simple framework for evaluating simulated low‐level inland winds with in‐situ observations and existing TC structure theory. The Automated Surface Observing Systems, Florida Coastal Monitoring Program, and best track data are used to generate a theory‐predicted wind profile that reasonably represents the observed radial distribution of TC wind speeds. We quantitatively and qualitatively evaluated the modeled inland TC wind fields, and described the model performance with a set of simple indicators. The framework was used to examine the performance of a high‐resolution two‐way nested Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory model on recent U.S. landfalling TCs. Results demonstrate the capacity of using this framework to assess the modeled TC low‐level wind field in the absence of dense inland observations.

Abstract Introduction Emerging long‐acting (LA) prevention and treatment medicines, technologies and regimens could be game‐changing for the HIV response, helping reach the ambitious goal of halting the epidemic by 2030. To attain this goal, the rapid expansion of at‐scale, sustainable, quality‐assured, and affordable supplies of LA HIV prevention and treatment products through accelerated and stronger competition, involving both originator and generic companies, will be essential. To do this, global health stakeholders should take advantage of voluntary licensing of intellectual property (IP) rights, such as through the United Nations‐backed, not‐for‐profit Medicines Patent Pool, as a proven mechanism to support broad access to existing HIV medicines across low‐ and middle‐income countries (LMICs). Discussion While voluntary licensing may unlock the possibility for generic competition to take place ahead of patent expiry, there are additional elements—of amplified importance for more complex LA HIV medicines—that need to be taken into consideration. This paper discusses 10 enablers of voluntary licensing of IP rights as a model to rapidly expand at‐scale, sustainable, quality‐assured, and affordable supplies of LA HIV prevention and treatment regimens in LMICs: Identifying promising LA technology platforms and drug formulations at an early developmental stage and engaging with patent holders Consolidating a multidisciplinary network and strengthening early‐stage coordination and collaboration to foster innovation Embedding public health considerations in product design and delivery Building innovative partnerships for product development and commercialization Raising awareness of and creating demand for emerging LA products Estimating the market size, ensuring sufficient competition and protecting sustainability Using technology transfer and hands‐on technical support to reduce product development timelines and costs Exploring de‐risking mechanisms and financial incentives to support generic manufacturers Optimizing strategies for generic product development and regulatory filings Aligning and coordinating efforts of stakeholders across the value chain. Conclusions Rapid access to emerging LA prevention and treatment regimens and technologies can be facilitated by voluntary licensing—catalyzed and supplemented by enabling collaborative and non‐duplicative efforts of various other stakeholders. This can effectively lead to improved—accelerated and cheaper—access to quality‐assured medicines for populations in LMICs.

Introduction After successful reperfusion is achieved (extended Thrombolysis in Cerebral Infarction (eTICI) ≥ 2b50), decision on pursuing additional treatment strategies in order to achieve complete reperfusion (eTICI = 2c/3), is multifactorial and depends on patient’s clinical and imaging characteristics. We have developed and validated a clinical decision tool to provide individualized predictions on achieving delayed reperfusion based on individual patient data. Methods Single‐center registry analysis for all consecutive patients admitted between 02/2015 – 12/2020. Primary variable of interest was perfusion imaging outcome in patients with incomplete reperfusion (eTICI 2a‐2c), evaluated on the 24‐hour follow‐up imaging. This variable was dichotomized into delayed reperfusion, in case of non‐observable perfusion deficit, and persistent perfusion deficit, in case of perfusion deficit captured on the final angiography imaging. Final model variable selection was performed via bootstrapped (n = 200) stepwise backwards regression. Model was split into a training and testing set (80:20 ratio), with 10‐fold cross validation resampling. Results 372 patients (50.8% female, mean age 74) were included, with 228 (61.2%) of them having delayed reperfusion. Final model identified seven variables of importance including: age, sex, atrial fibrillation, Intervention‐to‐Follow‐Up time, maneuver count, eTICI and collateral status. Model’s discriminative ability for predicting delayed reperfusion was adequate (AUC 0.83, 95% CI 0.74 –0.92), with an overall adjusted calibration (Brier score 0.17, 95% CI 0.15‐0.18). Conclusions Current model presents a tool that may aid clinical decision‐making process in selection of patients for pursuing additional treatment strategies after incomplete reperfusion has been achieved. This is an important next step towards personalized treatment of stroke patients undergoing mechanical thrombectomy.

Background Oral anticoagulation reduces stroke and disability in atrial fibrillation (AF) but is underused. We evaluated the effects of a novel patient‐clinician shared decision‐making (SDM) tool in reducing oral anticoagulation patient's decisional conflict as compared with usual care. Methods and Results We designed and evaluated a new digital decision aid in a multicenter, randomized, comparative effectiveness trial, ENHANCE‐AF (Engaging Patients to Help Achieve Increased Patient Choice and Engagement for AF Stroke Prevention). The digital AF shared decision‐making toolkit was developed using patient‐centered design with clear health communication principles (eg, meaningful images, limited text). Available in English and Spanish, the toolkit included the following: (1) a brief animated video; (2) interactive questions with answers; (3) a quiz to check on understanding; (4) a worksheet to be used by the patient during the encounter; and (5) an online guide for clinicians. The study population included English or Spanish speakers with nonvalvular AF and a CHA2DS2‐VASc stroke score ≥1 for men or ≥2 for women. Participants were randomized in a 1:1 ratio to either usual care or the shared decision‐making toolkit. The primary end point was the validated 16‐item Decision Conflict Scale at 1 month. Secondary outcomes included Decision Conflict Scale at 6 months and the 10‐item Decision Regret Scale at 1 and 6 months as well as a weighted average of Mann–Whitney U‐statistics for both the Decision Conflict Scale and the Decision Regret Scale. A total of 1001 participants were enrolled and followed at 5 different sites in the United States between December 18, 2019, and August 17, 2022. The mean patient age was 69±10 years (40% women, 16.9% Black, 4.5% Hispanic, 3.6% Asian), and 50% of participants had CHA2DS2‐VASc scores ≥3 (men) or ≥4 (women). The primary end point at 1 month showed a clinically meaningful reduction in decisional conflict: a 7‐point difference in median scores between the 2 arms (16.4 versus 9.4; Mann–Whitney U‐statistics=0.550; P=0.007). For the secondary end point of 1‐month Decision Regret Scale, the difference in median scores between arms was 5 points in the direction of less decisional regret (P=0.078). The treatment effects lessened over time: at 6 months the difference in medians was 4.7 points for Decision Conflict Scale (P=0.060) and 0 points for Decision Regret Scale (P=0.35). Conclusions Implementation of a novel shared decision‐making toolkit (afibguide.com; afibguide.com/clinician) achieved significantly lower decisional conflict compared with usual care in patients with AF. Background This study was conducted to explore the association of different phenotypes, count, and location of chronic covert brain infarctions (CBIs) with detection of atrial fibrillation (AF) on prolonged post‐stroke cardiac rhythm monitoring (PCM). Methods and Results We conducted a cohort single‐center study of consecutive first‐ever ischemic stroke or transient ischemic attack patients undergoing PCM between January 2015 and December 2017. We blindly rated CBI phenotypes according to established definitions and white matter hyperintensities (WMHs) according to the age‐related white matter changes rating scale. We used (multiple) regression models to assess the association of the imaging biomarkers and incident AF on PCM. A total of 795 patients (median [interquartile range]) aged 69 (57–78) years, 41% women, median National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale score 2 (0–5), median PCM duration 14 (7–14) days, and AF detection in 61 patients (7.7%) were included. On univariate analysis, WMHs (per point odds ratio, 1.35 [95% CI, 1.03–1.78]) but not CBIs (odds ratio, 0.90 [95% CI, 0.52–1.56]) were associated with AF detection. Neither CBI phenotype, count, nor location were associated with AF detection. After adjustment for age, hypertension, and stroke severity, neither increasing WMHs (per point adjusted odds ratio, 0.85 [95% CI, 0.60–1.20]) nor CBIs (adjusted odds ratio, 0.60 [95% CI, 0.33–1.09]) were independently associated with AF detection. Conclusions Although WMHs and CBIs represent surrogate biomarkers of vascular risk factors, neither WMHs nor CBIs, including their phenotypes, count, and location, were independently associated with AF detection on PCM. In patients with manifest ischemic stroke or transient ischemic attack, the presence of imaging biomarkers of chronic ischemic injury does not seem promising to further refine prediction tools for AF detection on PCM.

Abstract Objective Epilepsy is highly prevalent in onchocerciasis‐endemic African regions. Various types of epilepsy have been described in such regions based essentially on clinical characteristics. Methods We conducted a clinical, neurophysiological and neuropsychological study of epilepsy in the onchocerciasis‐endemic region of Ntui, Sanaga‐Mbam area, Cameroon. Results One hundred and eighty‐seven persons with presumed epilepsy were recruited in an epilepsy clinic in Ntui. Epilepsy was clinically confirmed in 144 (79%) subjects, 69 (46.0%) of them met the onchocerciasis‐associated epilepsy (OAE) criteria, and 51 of 106 tested (48.1%) presented Ov16 antibodies. Electroencephalograms (EEG) were recorded in 91 participants, of which 36 (33%) were considered abnormal and 27 of 36 (75%) revealed bifrontotemporal spike and slow waves. Concerning the neuropsychological evaluation, 29% showed severe global cognitive impairment, 28% severe episodic memory impairment, and 66% severe frontal cognitive impairment. Half of the persons with epilepsy (PWE) suffered from a mental disorder. Significance In PWE in the Sanaga‐Mbam area in Cameroon, we observed EEG patterns similar to those described among persons with OAE, including nodding syndrome in other onchocerciasis‐endemic areas. Most PWE presented with severe cognitive impairment. We hypothesize that onchocerciasis may induce neurocognitive disorders and epilepsy via a mechanism that involves mainly the frontal and temporal regions of the brain.

Abstract Small Extracellular Vesicles (sEVs) are 50–200 nm in diameter vesicles delimited by a lipid bilayer, formed within the endosomal network or derived from the plasma membrane. They are secreted in various biological fluids, including airway nasal mucus. The goal of this work was to understand the role of sEVs present in the mucus (mu‐sEVs) produced by human nasal epithelial cells (HNECs) in SARS‐CoV‐2 infection. We show that uninfected HNECs produce mu‐sEVs containing SARS‐CoV‐2 receptor ACE2 and activated protease TMPRSS2. mu‐sEVs cleave prefusion viral Spike proteins at the S1/S2 boundary, resulting in higher proportions of prefusion S proteins exposing their receptor binding domain in an ‘open’ conformation, thereby facilitating receptor binding at the cell surface. We show that the role of nasal mu‐sEVs is to complete prefusion Spike priming performed by intracellular furin during viral egress from infected cells. This effect is mediated by vesicular TMPRSS2 activity, rendering SARS‐CoV‐2 virions prone to entry into target cells using the ‘early’, TMPRSS2‐dependent pathway instead of the ‘late’, cathepsin‐dependent route. These results indicate that prefusion Spike priming by mu‐sEVs in the nasal cavity plays a role in viral tropism. They also show that nasal mucus does not protect from SARS‐CoV‐2 infection, but instead facilitates it.

Background The National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) obtained 24 hours after ischemic stroke is a good indicator for functional outcome and early mortality, but the correlation with long‐term survival is less clear. We analyzed the correlation of the NIHSS after 24 hours (24h NIHSS) and early clinical neurological development after mechanical thrombectomy with early and long‐term survival as well as its predictive power on survival. Methods We reviewed a prospective observational registry for all patients undergoing mechanical thrombectomy between January 2010 and December 2018. Vital status was extracted from the Swiss Population Registry. Adjusted hazard ratio (aHR) and crude hazard ratios were calculated using Cox regression. To assess predictive power of the 24h NIHSS, different Random Survival Forest models were evaluated. Results We included 957 patients (median follow‐up 1376 days). Patients with lower 24h NIHSS and major early neurological improvement had substantially better survival rates. We observed significantly higher aHR for death in patients with 24h NIHSS 12 to 15 (aHR, 1.78; 95% CI, 1.1–2.89), with 24h NIHSS 16 to 21 (aHR, 2.54, 95% CI, 1.59–4.06), and with 24h NIHSS >21 (aHR, 5.74; 95% CI, 3.47–9.5). The 24h NIHSS showed the best performance predicting mortality (receiver operating characteristic area under the curve at 3 months [0.85±0.034], at 1 year [0.82±0.029], at 2 years [0.82±0.031], and at 5 years [0.83±0.035]), followed by NIHSS change. Conclusions Patients with acute ischemic stroke achieving a low 24h NIHSS or major early neurological improvement after mechanical thrombectomy had markedly lower long‐term mortality. Furthermore, 24h NIHSS had the best predictive power for early and long‐term survival in our machine learning–based prediction.

Abstract Species coexistence is governed by availability of resources and intraguild interactions including strategies to reduce ecological overlap. Gray foxes are dietary generalist mesopredators expected to benefit from anthropogenic disturbance, but populations have declined across the midwestern USA, including severe local extirpation rates coinciding with high coyote and domestic dog occurrence and low red fox occurrence. We used data from a large‐scale camera trap survey in southern Illinois, USA to quantify intraguild spatial and temporal interactions among the canid guild including domestic dogs. We used a two‐species co‐occurrence model to make pairwise assessments of conditional occupancy and detection rates. We also estimated temporal activity overlap among species and fit a fixed‐effects hierarchical community occupancy model with the four canid species. We partitioned the posterior distributions to compare gray fox occupancy probabilities conditional on estimated state of combinations of other species to assess support for hypothesized interactions. We found no evidence of broadscale avoidance among native canids and conclude that spatial and temporal segregation were limited by ubiquitous human disturbance. Mean guild richness was two canid species at a site and gray fox occupancy was greater when any combination of sympatric canids was also present, setting the stage for competitive exclusion over time. Domestic dogs may amplify competitive interactions by increasing canid guild size to the detriment of gray foxes. Our results suggest that while human activities can benefit some mesopredators, other species such as gray foxes may serve as bellwethers for habitat degradation with trophic downgrading and continued anthropogenic homogenization.

Abstract Background COVID‐19 changed the way we practice oncology in multiple ways. Because most cancer patients are comorbid or immunocompromised, we are trying as much as possible to reduce their risk of infection. Marginal just 2 years ago, telemedicine quickly became preeminent with the pandemic to reduce hospital exposure. However, using only virtual visits in oncology patients risk delaying cancer diagnosis or the identification of a complication. Case series We present here four cases where a serious medical problem evident on physical exam was overlooked during a virtual visit. Two of our patients experienced a delay in cancer diagnosis thus putting them at risk of local or distant spread. The two others were established oncology patients where a serious medical complication was missed on a virtual visit. Conclusions Now more than a year into the pandemic, telemedicine has clearly been a useful tool by limiting unnecessary hospital visits. Yet, as our cases illustrate, its use in oncology without clear boundary can undermine the quality of care. Now that effective vaccines are reducing the transmission and the severity of infection, most oncology patients can be evaluated by a real‐time visit.

Abstract Understanding the processes that shape forest functioning, structure, and diversity remains challenging, although data on forest systems are being collected at a rapid pace and across scales. Forest models have a long history in bridging data with ecological knowledge and can simulate forest dynamics over spatio‐temporal scales unreachable by most empirical investigations. We describe the development that different forest modelling communities have followed to underpin the leverage that simulation models offer for advancing our understanding of forest ecosystems. Using three widely applied but contrasting approaches – species distribution models, individual‐based forest models, and dynamic global vegetation models – as examples, we show how scientific and technical advances have led models to transgress their initial objectives and limitations. We provide an overview of recent model applications on current important ecological topics and pinpoint ten key questions that could, and should, be tackled with forest models in the next decade. Synthesis. This overview shows that forest models, due to their complementarity and mutual enrichment, represent an invaluable toolkit to address a wide range of fundamental and applied ecological questions, hence fostering a deeper understanding of forest dynamics in the context of global change.

Abstract The whitefly Bemisia tabaci is a closely related group of >35 cryptic species that feed on the phloem sap of a broad range of host plants. Species in the complex differ in their host‐range breadth, but the mechanisms involved remain poorly understood. We investigated, therefore, how six different B. tabaci species cope with the environmental unpredictability presented by a set of four common and novel host plants. Behavioral studies indicated large differences in performances on the four hosts and putative specialization of one of the species to cassava plants. Transcriptomic analyses revealed two main insights. First, a large set of genes involved in metabolism (>85%) showed differences in expression between the six species, and each species could be characterized by its own unique expression pattern of metabolic genes. However, within species, these genes were constitutively expressed, with a low level of environmental responsiveness (i.e., to host change). Second, within each species, sets of genes mainly associated with the super‐pathways “environmental information processing” and “organismal systems” responded to the host switching events. These included genes encoding for proteins involved in sugar homeostasis, signal transduction, membrane transport, and immune, endocrine, sensory and digestive responses. Our findings suggested that the six B. tabaci species can be divided into four performance/transcriptomic “Types” and that polyphagy can be achieved in multiple ways. However, polyphagy level is determined by the specific identity of the metabolic genes/pathways that are enriched and overexpressed in each species (the species' individual metabolic “tool kit”).

Abstract In boreal landscapes, emphasis is currently placed on close‐to‐nature management strategies, which aim to maintain the biodiversity and ecosystem services related to old‐growth forests. The success of these strategies, however, depends on an accurate understanding of the dynamics within these forests. While moderate‐severity disturbances have recently been recognized as important drivers of boreal forests, little is known about their effects on stand structure and growth. This study therefore aimed to reconstruct the disturbance and postdisturbance dynamics in boreal old‐growth forests that are driven by recurrent moderate‐severity disturbances. We studied eight primary old‐growth forests in Québec, Canada, that have recorded recurrent and moderately severe spruce budworm (Choristoneura fumiferana [Clem.]) outbreaks over the 20th century. We applied an innovative dendrochronological approach based on the combined study of growth patterns and releases to reconstruct stand disturbance and postdisturbance dynamics. We identified nine growth patterns; they represented trees differing in age, size, and canopy layer. These patterns highlighted the ability of suppressed trees to rapidly fill gaps created by moderate‐severity disturbances through a single and significant increase in radial growth and height. Trees that are unable to attain the canopy following the disturbance tend to remain in the lower canopy layers, even if subsequent disturbances create new gaps. This combination of a low stand height typical of boreal forests, periodic disturbances, and rapid canopy closure often resulted in stands constituted mainly of dominant and codominant trees, similar to even‐aged forests. Overall, this study underscored the resistance of boreal old‐growth forests owing to their capacity to withstand repeated moderate‐severity disturbances. Moreover, the combined study of growth patterns and growth release demonstrated the efficacy of such an approach for improving the understanding of the fine‐scale dynamics of natural forests. The results of this research will thus help develop silvicultural practices that approximate the moderate‐severity disturbance dynamics observed in primary and old‐growth boreal forests.

Background The benefit of mechanical thrombectomy in patients with low Alberta Stroke Program Early Computed Tomography Score (ASPECTS) for short‐term outcomes is debatable and long‐term outcomes remain unknown. This retrospective, monocentric cohort study aimed to assess the association between reperfusion grade and the long‐term functional outcome measured with modified Rankin scale as well as the long‐term health‐related quality of life recorded at the last follow‐up in patients according to baseline ASPECTS (0–5 versus 6–10). Methods Deceased patients were identified from the Swiss population register and follow‐up telephone interviews were conducted with all surviving patients with stroke treated with mechanical thrombectomy between January 1, 2010, and December 31, 2018. Favorable outcome was defined as modified Rankin scale 0 to 3; health‐related quality of life was assessed using the 3‐level version of the EuroQol 5‐dimensional questionnaire. The EuroQol 5‐dimension utility index was calculated for statistical analyses. The reperfusion grade was core laboratory adjudicated using the expanded treatment in cerebral ischemia score. Adjusted odds ratios for the association between the reperfusion grade assessed by expanded treatment in cerebral ischemia and outcomes were calculated from multivariable logistic regression. Results Of the 1114 patients with available long‐term follow‐up records (median follow‐up, 3.67 years), 997 were included in the final analysis. The effect of anisotropic surface roughness on the spontaneous transport of droplets on chemical wettability gradients has not been investigated. Understanding the details of this process has the potential to unlock new fluid handling functionality critical to the development of next‐generation surfaces with intelligent control capabilities. Herein, the fabrication of chemical gradients with mechanically tunable anisotropic microtopography (microwrinkles with directional roughness) is described and the use of these surfaces in programable microdroplet transport is reported. In particular, the interplay between chemical gradient intensity, microwrinkle orientation, and droplet velocity/trajectory was investigated, enabling the rational synthesis of surface fluidic systems capable of mechanically programmable 2D droplet manipulations, vertical droplet transport, and droplet combination. These findings highlight the sophisticated capabilities of mechanically switchable droplet handling systems and demonstrate new avenues for designing intelligent materials with programable transport properties for potential use in surface/microfluidics, water harvesting, energy generation, bioanalysis, and microreactor design.

Abstract The Canada lynx (Lynx canadensis) and the bobcat (Lynx rufus) are closely related species with overlap at their range peripheries, but the factors that limit each species and the interactions between them are not well understood. Habitat selection is a hierarchical process, in which selection at higher orders (geographic range, home range) may constrain selection at lower orders (within the home range). Habitat selection at a very fine scale within the home range has been less studied for both lynx and bobcat compared to selection at broader spatiotemporal scales. To compare this fourth‐order habitat selection by the two species in an area of sympatry, we tracked lynx and bobcat during the winters of 2017 and 2018 on the north shore of Lake Huron, Ontario. We found that both lynx and bobcat selected shallower snow, higher snowshoe hare abundance, and higher amounts of coniferous forest at the fourth order. However, the two species were spatially segregated at the second order, and lynx were found in areas with deeper snow, more snowshoe hare, and more coniferous forest. Taken together, our findings demonstrate that the lynx and bobcat select different resources at the second order, assorting along an environmental gradient in the study area, and that competition is unlikely to be occurring between the two species at finer scales.
