To enhance the possibilities in lightweight constructions in terms of processability and recyclability, fiber reinforced thermoplastics are a promising class of materials. In this context, the fiber-matrix interface has a major influence on the mechanical properties of the composite. With polyamide 6 (PA6) being a hygroscopic thermoplastic, the effects of elevated humidity and temperature on the mechanical behavior must be considered [1]. This study aims to characterize the micro-mechanical material properties of carbon long fiber reinforced PA6 in quasi-static tensile tests after exposure to elevated temperature and humidity levels. Therefore, the specimens are conditioned in different climates and tested afterwards. In order to determine the initiation and propagation of matrix cracks, interface failure, and fiber fracture, the experiments are conducted on a micro-scale with an average cross-section of 0.03 mm2. The damage patterns are captured using optical microscopy and SEM images. The effects of conditioning at various temperature and humidity levels are discussed. The main results are the qualitative description of the degradation of mechanical properties due to hydrothermal effects.

The effective integration of the environmental with the economic and social dimensions of sustainability will only succeed when the core problem perceptions of professionals in these fields adjust as well. Yet, while sustainability integration in general has been thoroughly researched, few studies have analysed the specific role of subjective understandings among professionals. This article bridges this gap by asking how professionals understand and operationalise sustainability integration. Which factors shape their perceptions and practices? We present the results of an online survey that was circulated to a diverse sample of professionals and then analysed using statistical methods. Responses from 508 participants show that sustainability integration is mostly perceived as a balance across all three sustainability dimensions rather than a hierarchy with the environment at its basis. However, perceptions also vary significantly across professional and geographical contexts. This signifies the need to better account for how individual circumstances affect processes of integration.

There is no waste in nature. Everything that is produced has a purpose and everything that becomes waste can be transformed into a new resource, triggering a virtuous circuit that feeds itself. The circular economy of waste means a system in which the production-consumption-disposal process is overcome to replace it with a circular model, where the final waste product is re-introduced into the circulation as a secondary raw material. The logic to follow is that after consumption and before any disposal, it is necessary to activate virtuous processes such as reduce, reuse and recycling. This work focuses on the possible uses of a vegetable waste matrix, such as olive leaves. The olive tree (Olea europaea) is a fruit tree, cultivated for more than 3,500 years for its fruits and edible oil. However, just like oil, olive leaf contains a high amount of polyphenols, in particular oleuropein, one of the most powerful natural antioxidants known and hydroxytyrosol, which also has powerful antiseptic properties. Therefore, olive leaf extracts, thanks to the presence of oleuropein associated with hydroxytyrosol, represent a powerful natural antioxidant, a valid ally of the cardiovascular system. In addition, olive leaves are an excellent regulator of the digestive system: they regulate intestinal transit and above all eliminate fungi and other unwanted parasites from our body. Starting from these premises, in this work, a green extraction technique such as rapid solid liquid dynamic extraction (RSLDE) is compared with conventional maceration to obtain an olive leaf extract rich in antioxidants to be used in various sectors.

OBJECTIVE To evaluate the impact of adjuvant radiotherapy (aRT) in patients with prostate cancer (PCa) found to have pathological positive lymph nodes (pN1s) after radical prostatectomy (RP) and extended pelvic lymph node dissection (ePLND) with regard to distant recurrence-free survival (RFS), according to both main tumour pathological characteristics and number of positive lymph nodes. Biochemical RFS, local RFS, overall survival (OS) and acute and late toxicity were assessed as secondary endpoints. PATIENTS AND METHODS A retrospective cohort of 187 consecutive patients with pN1 PCa were treated with aRT at the IEO, European Institute of Oncology IRCCS, Milan, Italy. aRT on the tumour bed and pelvis was administered within 6 months of RP. Androgen deprivation therapy was administered according to the guidelines. Univariate and multivariate Cox regression analyses predicting biochemical RFS, local RFS, distant RFS and OS rates were performed to assess whether the number of pN1s represented an independent prognostic factor. The Youden index was computed to find the optimal threshold for the number of pN1s able to discriminate between patients with or without biochemical and clinical relapse. RESULTS At 5 years, local RFS, distant RFS, biochemical RFS and OS were 68%, 71%, 56% and 94%, respectively. The median follow-up was 49 months. The number of pN1s was significantly associated with biochemical RFS, local RFS and distant RFS. The best threshold for discriminating between patients with or without biochemical and clinical relapse was five pN1s. In multivariate analyses, the number of pN1s was confirmed to be an independent predictor of biochemical RFS, local RFS and distant RFS, but not of OS. Multivariate analyses also showed an increased risk of biochemical relapse for increasing values of initial prostate-specific antigen and for patients with tumour vascular invasion. Local and distant RFS were also inversely correlated with significantly reduced risk for International Society of Urological Pathology grade group

Background and purpose Rehabilitation plays a central role in stroke recovery. Besides conventional therapy, technological treatments have become available. The effectiveness and appropriateness of technological rehabilitation are not yet well defined; hence, research focused on different variables impacting recovery is needed. Results from the literature identified cognitive reserve (CR) as a variable impacting on the cognitive outcome. In this paper, the aim was to evaluate whether CR influences the motor outcome in patients after stroke treated with conventional or robotic therapy and whether it may influence one treatment rather than another. Methods Seventy-five stroke patients were enrolled in five Italian neurological rehabilitation centres. Patients were assigned either to a robotic group, rehabilitation by means of robotic devices, or to a conventional group, where a traditional approach was used. Patients were evaluated at baseline and after rehabilitation treatment of 6 weeks through the Action Research Arm Test (ARAT), the Motricity Index (MI) and the Barthel Index (BI). CR was assessed at baseline using the Cognitive Reserve Index (CRI) questionnaire. Results Considering all patients, a weak correlation was found between the CRI related to leisure time and MI evolution (r = 0.276; P = 0.02). Amongst the patients who performed a robotic rehabilitation, a moderate correlation emerged between the CRI related to working activities and MI evolution (r = 0.422; P = 0.02). Conclusions Our results suggest that CR may influence the motor outcome. For each patient, CR and its subcategories should be considered in the choice between conventional and robotic treatment.

This paper shows that the 'Edgeworth box' diagram, as presented in textbooks, was not devised by Francis Ysidro Edgeworth but by Vilfredo Pareto. The scholarly literature on the derivation of the box diagram published over the last thirty years has continued to attribute the diagram to Edgeworth, textbooks have implied the same attribution when noting that it is named after Edgeworth. This new history of the Edgeworth box diagram, however, provides teachers with a basis for overviewing the derivation of the Edgeworth box when introducing their students to that diagram. The incidence of Hodgkin's lymphoma (HL) is growing due to an increase in Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-associated HL in AIDS patients. The HL tumor microenvironment is vital for the survival of the malignant Hodgkin-Reed Sternberg (HRS) cells of HL, which express the EBV protein latent membrane protein 2A (LMP2A). While previous work shows that LMP2A mimics B-cell receptor (BCR) signaling to promote the survival of HRS cells, the ability of LMP2A to establish and maintain the tumor microenvironment through the production of chemokines remains unknown. Since BCR signaling induces the production of the chemokine macrophage inflammatory protein-1α (MIP-1α), and since LMP2A is a BCR mimic, we hypothesized that LMP2A increases MIP-1α levels. A comparison of multiple LMP2A-negative and -positive cell lines demonstrates that LMP2A increases MIP-1α. Additionally, LMP2A-mutant cell lines and pharmacologic inhibitors indicate that LMP2A activates a Syk/PI3K/NF-κB pathway to enhance MIP-1α. Finally, based on the finding that an NF-κB inhibitor decreased MIP-1α RNA/protein in LMP2A-positive cells, we are the first to demonstrate that LMP2A increases the nuclear localization of the NF-κB p65 subunit using DNA-binding assays and confocal microscopy in human B cells. These findings not only have implications for the treatment of HL, but also other LMP2A-expressing B-cell tumors that overexpress NF-κB.

In the Arctic, the spatial distribution of boreal forest cover and soil profile transition characterizing the taiga-tundra ecological transition zone (TTE) is experiencing an alarming transformation. The SIBBORK-TTE model provides a unique opportunity to predict the spatiotemporal distribution patterns of vegetation heterogeneity, forest structure change, arctic-boreal forest interactions, and ecosystem transitions with high resolution scaling across broad domains. Within the TTE, evolving climatological and biogeochemical dynamics facilitate moisture signaling and nutrient cycle disruption, i.e. permafrost thaw and nutrient decomposition, thereby catalyzing land cover change and ecosystem instability. To demonstrate these trends, in situ ground measurements for active layer depth were collected to cross-validate below-ground-enhanced modeled simulations from 1980-2017. Shifting trends in permafrost variability (i.e. active layer depth) and seasonality were derived from model results and compared statistically to the in situ data. The SIBBORK-TTE model was then run to project future below-ground conditions utilizing CMIP6 scenarios. Upon visualization and curve-integrated analysis of the simulated freeze-thaw dynamics, the calculated performance metric associated with annual active layer depth rate of change yielded 76.19%. Future climatic conditions indicate an increase in active layer depth and shifting seasonality across the TTE. With this novel approach, spatiotemporal variation of active layer depth provides an opportunity for identifying climate and topographic drivers and forecasting permafrost variability and earth system feedback mechanisms.

In this paper, an analytical method has been developed and validated for the analysis of new psychoactive substances (NPS) and metabolites in hair samples. The method was based on pressurized liquid extraction (PLE) followed by solid-phase extraction (SPE) clean-up and high performance liquid chromatography-high resolution mass spectrometry (HPLC-HRMS) analysis. To evaluate extraction efficiency and the applicability of the method, hair samples were fortified by soaking in order to obtain a good surrogate for drug users' hair; the amount of incorporated drugs related to their lipophilicity, similarly to in vivo drug incorporation. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first method that allowed for the analysis of both cathinones (5) and synthetic cannabinoids (7) in hair with a single extraction procedure and chromatographic run. A phenethylamine (2C-T-4), 4- fluorophenylpiperazine and methoxetamine were also included showing that PLE coupled to SPE clean-up was suitable for a multi-class analysis of NPS in hair. In addition, the use of PLE significantly reduced hair analysis time: decontamination, incubation, clean-up, and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) analysis were carried out in approximately 45 min. The method was fully validated according to Scientific Working Group for Forensic Toxicology (SWGTOX) and Society of Hair Testing (SoHT) guidelines. Limit of quantification (LOQ) values ranged from 8 to 50 pg mg-1 for cathinones, phenetylamines and piperazines, and from 9 to 40 pg mg-1 for synthetic cannabinoids (10 pg mg-1 for methoxetamine). Matrix effects were below 15% for all the analytes, demonstrating the effectiveness of the clean-up step. Inaccuracy was lower than 9% in terms of bias. Copyright © 2016 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
