2. Comprehensive analysis including in‐game spending and violent game playing in patients with internet gaming disorder

Abstract Aim Internet gaming disorder (IGD) is receiving increasing attention. In particular, violent gameplay or in‐game spending affects the psychiatric conditions and economic difficulties of patients. We conducted regression analysis and path analysis to investigate the associations between a comprehensive list of factors in patients with IGD, including the degree of internet or gaming dependence, developmental problems, family background, severity of depression, sleeping habits, in‐game spending, and first‐person shooter (FPS) and third‐person shooter (TPS) game playing. Methods The participants were 47 Japanese individuals (39 males and 8 females) aged ≤20 years diagnosed with IGD with complete data from the internet addiction test, autism spectrum quotient, Quick Inventory of Depressive Symptomatology, and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. All participants were asked whether their parents have divorce history, whether they have siblings, whether they play FPS or TPS games, and whether they engage in in‐game spending. Firstly, we compared these factors between males and females; secondly, we conducted regression analysis and path analysis in male patients. Results As for simple comparison between sex, female patients showed greater severity of IGD and depressive score. In regression analysis of male patients, significant associations were found between FPS or TPS game playing and in‐game spending. We also created path diagrams. Conclusion The results of the comprehensive analyses suggest the possibility that bidirectional synergistic effects could be achieved by gradually reducing both violent game playing and in‐game spending. The concept of internet dependence has a wide range of meanings, and for each subtype, it is important to consider the background that led to the dependence to make individualized environmental adjustments and provide psychotherapy.

Abstract Monovalent Omicron XBB.1.5 mRNA vaccines were newly developed and approved by the FDA in Autumn 2023 for preventing COVID‐19. However, clinical efficacy for these vaccines is currently lacking. We previously established the quantification of antigen‐specific antibody sequence (QASAS) method to assess the response to severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS‐CoV‐2) vaccination at the mRNA level using B‐cell receptor (BCR) repertoire assay and the coronavirus antibody database (CoV‐AbDab). Here, we used this method to evaluate the immunogenicity of monovalent XBB.1.5 vaccines. We analyzed repeated blood samples of healthy volunteers before and after monovalent XBB.1.5 vaccination (BNT162b2 XBB.1.5 or mRNA‐1273.815) for the BCR repertoire to assess BCR/antibody sequences that matched SARS‐CoV‐2‐specific sequences in the database. The number of matched unique sequences and their total reads quickly increased 1 week after vaccination. Matched sequences included those bound to the Omicron strain and Omicron XBB sublineage. The antibody sequences that can bind to the Omicron strain and XBB sublineage revealed that the monovalent XBB.1.5 vaccines showed a stronger response than previous vaccines or SARS‐CoV‐2 infection before the emergence of XBB sublineage. The QASAS method was able to demonstrate the immunogenic effect of monovalent XBB.1.5 vaccines for the 2023–2024 COVID‐19 vaccination campaign.

Abstract Nano/microfabrication is of fundamental importance both in scientific and industrial situations. There are, therefore, many attempts at realizing easier, quicker, and more precise fabrication of various structures; however, achieving this aim without a bulky and costly setup is still challenging. Here, we introduce a facile and versatile means of printing an ordered structure consisting of nanoscale stripes and more complicated geometries including pillars and wavy form with a lateral resolution of single micrometers. To this end, we prepare a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) slab with an oxygen plasma‐induced wrinkled surface where liquid PDMS exudes by syneresis. Since this liquid PDMS is automatically loaded, the printing is repeatable without inking. A substrate moderately wettable to the liquid PDMS as well as amount/property‐controlled syneresis is primarily important for the creation of well‐defined structures. Precisely controlling these conditions will make this method universally applicable to diverse substrates and liquids including suspensions.

Abstract Polythiophenes (PTs) with flexible backbones possess inherent polymer behaviors, including molecular wire effects and dynamic structural changes in π‐conjugated systems. The chemical sensing at the functionalized side chains can manipulate such polymer characteristics, resulting in various optical patterns depending on the analyte structures and their concentrations. The unique optical patterns derived from polymer properties contribute to group categorization over a wide concentration range for pattern recognition. This review aims to provide a concise overview of the potential of PT chemosensor arrays using actual sensing examples in environmental monitoring, medical diagnostics, and food analysis. Furthermore, this review summarizes the methodologies that use polymer gels to realize practical chemosensor array chips for onsite analysis.

Abstract Background In a randomized phase II/III trial (JCOG1008), weekly cisplatin (40 mg/m2) was non‐inferior to 3‐weekly cisplatin (100 mg/m2) for postoperative high‐risk head and neck cancer. We investigated how acute kidney injury (AKI), a major dose‐limiting toxicity effect of cisplatin, affects overall survival (OS). Methods We analyzed 251 patients from JCOG1008 receiving chemoradiotherapy. AKI was defined based on AKI Network criteria (serum creatinine increase of ≥0.3 mg/dL or ≥1.5‐fold [≥ stage I]) within 30 days after completing chemoradiotherapy. OS in the two arms was compared according to AKI development using the log‐rank test. Results The total incidence of AKI was lower in the weekly arm than in the 3‐weekly arm (38/122 [31.1%] vs. 56/129 [43.4%]). Additionally, stage II/III AKI occurred less frequently in the weekly arm than in the 3‐weekly arm (8/122 [6.6%] vs. 19/129 [14.7%]). Cisplatin doses were similar in the weekly arm for patients with and without AKI (median, 238.6 mg/m2 vs. 239.2 mg/m2; p = 0.94), but lower in the 3‐weekly arm for those who developed AKI (median, 276.3 mg/m2 vs. 297.4 mg/m2; p = 0.007). In the weekly arm, there was no difference in OS between patients with and without AKI (hazard ratio [HR], 1.06; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.53 to 2.10). However, in the 3‐weekly arm, patients with AKI had poorer OS than those without AKI (HR, 1.83; 95% CI, 1.04 to 3.21). Conclusions In this supplementary analysis of JCOG1008 data, AKI impacted the OS of patients with head and neck cancer undergoing postoperative chemoradiotherapy in the 3‐weekly arm but not in the weekly arm. Our results further endorse the utilization of weekly cisplatin at 40 mg/m2 in this setting.

Abstract Objective Eculizumab and ravulizumab are complement protein C5 inhibitors, showing efficacy and tolerability for patients with anti‐acetylcholine receptor‐positive (AChR+) generalized myasthenia gravis (gMG) in phase 3 clinical trials and subsequent analyses. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the clinical significance of eculizumab and switching to ravulizumab for refractory AChR+ gMG patients in the real‐world experience. Methods Among the database of Japan MG registry survey 2021, we studied AChR+ gMG patients who received eculizumab. We also evaluated these patients who switched from eculizumab to ravulizumab. Responder was defined as an improvement of at least 3 points in MG‐ADL. We performed a questionnaire of preference between eculizumab and ravulizumab. Results Among 1,106 patients with AChR+ gMG, 36 patients (3%) received eculizumab (female 78%, mean age 56.0 years). Eculizumab was preferentially used in severe and refractory MG patients. The duration of eculizumab treatment was 35 months on average. MG‐ADL improved from 9.4 ± 4.9 to 5.9 ± 5.1, and 25 (70%) of the 36 gMG patients were responders. Postintervention status was markedly improved after the eculizumab treatment. Of 13 patients who did not continue eculizumab, 6 showed insufficiencies. Early onset MG was most effective. However, 15 patients switching from eculizumab to ravulizumab kept favorable response and tolerability. Questionnaire surveys showed preference for ravulizumab over eculizumab. Interpretation Eculizumab and switching to ravulizumab showed to be effective for refractory AChR+ gMG patients in clinical settings.

Abstract We present a patient with lung adenocarcinoma showing high PD‐L1 expression and BRAF V600E mutation, who achieved a remarkable long‐term response to the combination therapy of dabrafenib and trametinib (DT treatment) after disease progression on immunotherapy. This case may provide an opportunity for clinicians to consider the order of administration of immunotherapy and molecular targeted therapy for BRAF V600E‐positive lung cancer.

Abstract Aim The aim of this study was to clarify the significance of resection of ovarian metastases from colorectal cancer and to identify the clinicopathologic characteristics. Methods In this multicenter retrospective study, we evaluated data on ovarian metastases from colorectal cancer obtained from patients at 20 centers in Japan between 2000 and 2014. We examined the impact of resection on the prognosis of patients with ovarian metastases and examined prognostic factors. Results The study included 296 patients with ovarian metastasis. The 3‐y overall survival rate was 68.6% for solitary ovarian metastases. ABSTRACT Background The expansion of preoperative immunochemotherapy has led to an increase in the number of patients with lung cancer receiving immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs). Therefore, oncologists should manage a variety of immune‐related adverse events (irAEs). One of the rare, life‐threatening, and recently proposed irAEs is cytokine release syndrome (CRS). Although the standard treatment of irAE is systemic administration of steroids, it has been suggested that tocilizumab may be an effective treatment option for CRS. Case This case describes a 69‐year‐old man with stage IIIA lung adenocarcinoma who received chemotherapy and nivolumab, which is an ICI, as neoadjuvant immunochemotherapy. After the first administration, the patient developed severe skin rash, fever, and arthralgia. We suspected irAEs and administered systemic steroids. However, fever and arthralgia did not improve, although the skin rash disappeared. These were also significant challenges for surgery. Noting the elevated levels of inflammatory cytokines, we consulted a rheumatologist. Finally, we decided to terminate neoadjuvant therapy after one cycle and administer tocilizumab. Tocilizumab dramatically improved the patient's symptoms and allowed him to undergo radical surgery. Pathological findings revealed that the patient achieved a major pathological response. Conclusion This indicates the potential effectiveness of early tocilizumab administration for ICI‐induced CRS, even in mild cases.

12. Esophageal squamous cell carcinoma complicated with varices successfully treated by endoscopic injection sclerotherapy and argon plasma coagulation: A case report

Abstract Treatment guidelines for esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) with concomitant esophageal varices (EVs), which increase the risk of bleeding, are unavailable. A 66‐year‐old man with a history of total gastrectomy was admitted to the hospital owing to hematemesis. Emergency upper gastrointestinal endoscopy revealed variceal bleeding near the anastomosis between the esophagus and jejunum, and endoscopic clipping stopped the bleeding. Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy following hemostasis revealed four EVs and a two‐thirds ESCC circumference. The ESCC depth was suspected to be up to the mucosa. The patient underwent intravariceal endoscopic injection sclerotherapy (EIS) for EVs, followed by paravariceal EIS. However, after these treatments, blood flow in the EVs just below the ESCC remained, and endoscopic resection of the ESCC was judged to be difficult to perform. Therefore, we prioritized EV treatment and performed a second EIS on the ESCC, followed by argon plasma coagulation (APC). APC was expected to not only solidify the EVs but also eliminate the ESCC existing in the mucosa. Finally, EVs and ESCC were treated by EIS and APC. EIS followed by APC may be useful for treating concurrent EVs and intramucosal ESCC in patients with liver cirrhosis when embolization of the EVs is ineffective.

13. Factors predicting technical failure of endoscopic transpapillary gallbladder drainage for acute cholecystitis

Abstract Objectives Endoscopic transpapillary gallbladder drainage (ETGBD) is a highly technical procedure, but few studies have evaluated factors that predict its technical success. Therefore, in this study, we sought to identify predictors of technically successful ETGBD. Methods One hundred and eighty‐two patients who underwent ETGBD for acute cholecystitis at our hospital were retrospectively investigated. Factors associated with technical failure were identified by focusing on clinical characteristics, anatomical features (direction of the cystic duct branch and course of the cystic duct), and procedural factors (cystic duct and gallbladder with or without contrast and cystic duct injury). Results The technical success rate was 84.6% (154/182) and the clinical success rate was 96.1% (148/154). The adverse event rate was 11.0% (20/182; cystic duct injury in 13 patients, pancreatitis in six, and liver abscess in one. Univariate and multivariate analyses identified the right cranial direction and spiral‐type course of the cystic duct to be significant anatomical features and cystic duct injury to be a significant procedural feature contributing to the technical failure of ETGBD. Conclusions ETGBD is a highly practical procedure for patients with acute cholecystitis. However, difficulty is encountered in some cases because of anatomical and procedural factors. Our results suggest that ETGBD may be difficult and thus should not be performed in cases with the right cranial direction or spiral‐type course of the cystic duct or those with cystic duct injury.

Abstract Objectives There are few reports on bowel preparation for early colonoscopy in patients with suspected colonic diverticular bleeding (CDB). We aim to clarify in a retrospective, multicenter study. Methods In a multicenter retrospective cohort study at 10 institutions, we analyzed clinical features of patients diagnosed with CDB, who underwent early colonoscopy within 24 h. We compared patients who were prepared with polyethylene glycol lavage (PEL) and those without PEL. We evaluated the effects of PEL for early colonoscopy in patients with suspected CDB. Results A total of 129 (53%) underwent under preparation with PEL and 113 patients without PEL. The PEL group was younger, had fewer comorbidities, and had better performance status. After adjusting for these variables with propensity score matching, the PEL group had a significantly shorter hospital stay (7.9 ± 4.7 vs. 10.1 ± 5.2 days; p = 0.001), and a higher cecal intubation rate (91.1% vs. 50.0%; p

Introduction The histological types of urethral cancer are mainly squamous cell or transitional cell carcinoma. Neuroendocrine tumor is extremely a rare type of urethral cancer. Case presentation A 72‐year‐old man visited with an erythema at the external urethral meatus. After 3 months, a 1‐cm reddish solid tumor was found on the external urethral meatus. He had a history of bladder cancer (pTa with carcinoma in situ), including the prostatic urethra, and underwent radical cystectomy with urethrectomy and ileal conduit construction 11 years ago. After 3 months, a 1‐cm reddish solid tumor was found on the external urethral meatus. The pathological diagnosis was a neuroendocrine tumor. Partial penectomy was performed. Conclusion Small cell neuroendocrine tumor could occur on urethral remnant after radical cystectomy with urethrectomy for urothelial cancer. Inspection of the penis and urethral meatus is important during regular follow‐up of patients after radical cystectomy.

Abstract Aims Atrial fibrillation (AF) increases the risk of heart failure (HF); however, little focus has been placed on the prevention of HF in patients with AF. Left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) is an established echocardiographic parameter in HF patients. We sought to investigate the association of LVEF with HF events in AF patients without pre‐existing HF. Methods and results The Fushimi AF Registry is a community‐based prospective survey of AF patients in Fushimi‐ku, Japan. In this analysis, we excluded patients with pre‐existing HF (defined as having one of the following: prior HF hospitalization, New York Heart Association class ≥ 2 in association with heart disease, or LVEF 0.05). During the median follow‐up period of 6.0 years, 255 patients (10%) were hospitalized for HF (annual incidence: 1.9% per person‐year). Multivariable Cox regression analysis demonstrated that lower LVEF strata were independently associated with the risk of HF [mildly reduced LVEF (40–49%): hazard ratio = 2.98, 95% confidence interval = 1.99–4.45 and below normal LVEF (50–59%): hazard ratio = 2.01, 95% confidence interval = 1.44–2.82, compared with normal LVEF (≥60%)] after adjustment by age, sex, type of AF, and CHA2DS2‐VASc score. LVEF 0.05). LVEF had an independent and incremental prognostic value for HF hospitalization in addition to natriuretic peptide levels in AF patients without pre‐existing HF. Conclusions Lower LVEF was significantly associated with the higher incidence of HF hospitalization in AF patients without pre‐existing HF, leading to the future risk stratification for and prevention of incident HF in AF patients.

Introduction Li–Fraumeni syndrome, an autosomal dominant cancer predisposition syndrome caused by a pathogenic variant of TP53, a tumor suppressor gene, leads to a high risk from early childhood of developing various types of cancers. Here, we report a case of advanced ureteral cancer in Li–Fraumeni syndrome. Case presentation A 73 years‐old female patient, who had been diagnosed genetically as Li–Fraumeni syndrome; suffered from chondrosarcoma in the left pelvic joint, bilateral breast cancer, endometrial cancer, gastric cancer, and colon cancer in her history. She was diagnosed as unresectable advanced urothelial cancer during continuous magnetic resonance imaging surveillance, underwent avelumab maintenance therapy after the combination of gemcitabine and cisplatin chemotherapy. The efficacies of gemcitabine and cisplatin chemotherapy and avelumab maintenance therapy were good. Conclusion We report an advanced urothelial cancer in a patient with Li–Fraumeni syndrome who demonstrated good efficacies to sequential medical therapy.

Abstract Aims/Introduction The Dementia Assessment Sheet for Community‐based Integrated Care System 8‐items (DASC‐8) assesses memory, orientation, instrumental activities of daily living and basic activities of daily living. Category I (DASC‐8 score ≤10), category II (11 ≤ DASC‐8 score ≤16) and category III (DASC‐8 score ≥17) have been defined. Based on these categories, the glycemic targets in diabetes patients aged ≥65 years have been proposed by the Japan Diabetes Society and the Japan Geriatrics Society Joint Committee. DASC‐8 is difficult to apply to patients without family members or supportive persons. We propose a verbal fluency test as the screening tool. Materials and Methods We enrolled 69 inpatients aged ≥65 years with type 2 diabetes, who were administered the DASC‐8 and VF tests, which included recalling animal names and common nouns starting with a specified letter in 1 min. The relationship between DASC‐8 and verbal fluency test scores was investigated. Results Animal fluency correlated with DASC‐8 scores after adjustment for patient characteristics. Animal scores correlated with orientation, instrumental activities of daily living and basic activities of daily living scores of DASC‐8, and tended to show a relationship with DASC‐8 memory scores. An animal score ≥8 predicted category I with a sensitivity of 89% and a specificity of 57%. An animal score ≤6 predicted category III with a sensitivity of 85% and a specificity of 67%. Conclusions Animal scores would be useful in predicting the categories of DASC‐8. Animal fluency could be a screening tool of DASC‐8 when a patient's family member or supportive person is absent.

Abstract Sinusoidal obstruction syndrome (SOS) is a fatal complication of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). Early diagnosis for SOS can improve clinical outcomes significantly. Here, we performed a retrospective study to investigate the Cairo diagnostic criteria, in which SOS was defined as the development of two or more in seven events, including transfusion‐refractory thrombocytopenia. Among 154 cases of allogeneic HSCT, 10 cases of SOS using the European Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation criteria (EBMT16) as the reference standard were identified. The original Cairo criteria could diagnose SOS 5 days earlier than any other established criteria, with some false‐positive results (sensitivity = 100.0%; specificity = 72.2%). When the cutoff was set to three events for the Cairo criteria, the diagnosis of SOS could be made 3 days earlier than that using the EBMT16 criteria, with comparable precision (specificity = 86.1%). The accuracy of the Cairo criteria improved further when the cutoff point was set to four (specificity = 93.8%). The fulfillment of the Cairo criteria was associated with high mortality. Based on our results, the Cairo criteria were also considered clinically useful, especially at three or four cutoff points. Further studies are required to validate and refine the criteria.

ABSTRACT Aims/Introduction To investigate whether the COVID‐19 pandemic affected behavioral changes and glycemic control in patients with diabetes and to conduct a survey of telemedicine during the pandemic. Materials and Methods In this retrospective study, a total of 2,348 patients were included from 15 medical facilities. Patients were surveyed about their lifestyle changes and attitudes toward telemedicine. Hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) levels were compared among before (from June 1 to August 31, 2019) and in the first (from June 1 to August 31, 2020) and in the second (from June 1 to August 31, 2021) year of the pandemic. A survey of physician attitudes toward telemedicine was also conducted. Results The HbA1c levels were comparable between 2019 (7.27 ± 0.97%), 2020 (7.28 ± 0.92%), and 2021 (7.25 ± 0.94%) without statistical difference between each of those 3 years. Prescriptions for diabetes medications increased during the period. The frequency of eating out was drastically reduced (51.7% in 2019; 30.1% in 2020), and physical activity decreased during the pandemic (48.1% in 2019; 41.4% in 2020; 43.3% in 2021). Both patients and physicians cited increased convenience and reduced risk of infection as their expectations for telemedicine, while the lack of physician–patient interaction and the impossibility of consultation and examination were cited as sources of concern. Conclusions Our data suggest that glycemic control did not deteriorate during the COVID‐19 pandemic with appropriate intensification of diabetes treatment in patients with diabetes who continued to attend specialized diabetes care facilities, and that patients and physicians shared the same expectations and concerns about telemedicine.

Abstract Background and Aim The purpose of this study was to analyze factors associated with the overall survival (OS) of atezolizumab/bevacizumab combination therapy for advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (aHCC). We also assessed the OS of patients with ineffective therapy and those who discontinued treatment owing to adverse events (AEs). Methods This retrospective multicenter study involved 139 patients with aHCC who received atezolizumab/bevacizumab combination therapy between November 2020 and September 2022. Results The median duration of treatment was 136.5 days, and the median observation period was 316 days. The overall response rate was 40%, and the disease control rate was 78% according to mRECIST criteria. Grade ≥2 AEs occurred in 63 patients (43%) and led to treatment discontinuation in 16 patients. Multivariate analysis revealed that treatment response and occurrence of grade ≥2 AEs after therapy, as well as low level of albumin‐bilirubin (ALBI) grade and low level of des‐gamma carboxy prothrombin (DCP) before therapy, were extracted as factors that contributed to OS. Log‐rank tests with the Kaplan–Meier method showed significant differences in OS among these factors. The OS of patients who discontinued owing to AEs was significantly shorter than that of other patients. Conclusion Not only factors before therapy but also treatment response and the appearance of AEs are involved in OS for atezolizumab/bevacizumab combination therapy. Although the development of AEs also contributed to OS, appropriate management of AEs is important to avoid discontinuing treatment with this combination.

Abstract A 52‐year‐old female never‐smoker with an abnormal shadow in the right lung detected on radiography was referred to our institution. Contrast‐enhanced computed tomography revealed an irregular nodule in the upper lobe of the right lung, suggestive of a pulmonary vascular abnormality. Angiography revealed a direct communication between the right internal mammary artery (IMA) and the right upper lobe pulmonary artery branches, with dilated and tortuous vascular proliferation. As multiple branch arteries were seen flowing into the upper lobe from the IMA, transcatheter selective embolization of these vessels and right upper lobectomy by video‐assisted thoracoscopic surgery were performed. Contrary to the clinical diagnosis, the pathological finding was a pulmonary adenocarcinoma of the right upper lobe. Additional lymph node dissection was performed later. We report an extremely rare and unprecedented case of pulmonary adenocarcinoma fed by the right IMA, with a literature review.

Abstract Vibration acceleration (VA) using a whole‐body vibration device is beneficial for skeletal muscles. However, its effect at the cellular level remains unclear. We aimed to investigate the effects of VA on muscles in vitro and in vivo using the C2C12 mouse myoblast cell line and cardiotoxin‐induced injury in male rat soleus muscles. Cell proliferation was evaluated using the WST/CCK‐8 assay and proportion of Ki‐67 positive cells. Cell migration was assessed using wound‐healing assay. Cell differentiation was examined by the maturation index in immunostained cultured myotubes and real‐time polymerase chain reaction. Regeneration of soleus muscle in rats was assessed by recruitment of satellite cells, cross‐sectional area of regenerated muscle fibers, number of centrally nucleated fibers, and conversion of regenerated muscle from fast‐ to slow‐twitch. VA at 30 Hz with low amplitude for 10 min promoted C2C12 cell proliferation, migration, and myotube maturation, without promoting expression of genes related to differentiation. VA significantly increased Pax7‐stained satellite cells and centrally nucleated fibers in injured soleus muscles on Day 7 and promoted conversion of fast‐ to slow‐twitch muscle fibers with an increase in the mean cross‐sectional area of regenerated muscle fibers on Day 14. VA enhanced the proliferation, migration, and maturation of C2C12 myoblasts and regeneration of injured rat muscles.

Abstract Objective This study aimed to investigate the clinical features of long COVID cases presenting with upper respiratory symptoms, a topic not yet fully elucidated. Study Design Prospective cohort study. Setting A multicenter study involving 26 medical facilities in Japan. Methods Inclusion criteria were patients aged ≥18 years old with a confirmed COVID‐19 diagnosis via severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 polymerase chain reaction or antigen testing, who were hospitalized at the participating medical facilities. Analyzing clinical information and patient‐reported outcomes from 1009 patients were analyzed. The outcome measured the degree of initial symptoms for taste or olfactory disorders and assessed the likelihood of these symptoms persisting as long COVID, as well as the impact on quality of life if the upper respiratory symptoms persisted as long COVID. Results Patients with high albumin, low C‐reactive protein, and low lactate dehydrogenase in laboratory tests tended to experience taste or olfactory disorders as part of long COVID. Those with severe initial symptoms had a higher risk of experiencing residual symptoms at 3 months, with an odds ratio of 2.933 (95% confidence interval [CI], 1.282‐6.526) for taste disorders and 3.534 (95% CI, 1.382‐9.009) for olfactory disorders. Presence of upper respiratory symptoms consistently resulted in lower quality of life scores. Conclusion The findings from this cohort study suggest that severe taste or olfactory disorders as early COVID‐19 symptoms correlate with an increased likelihood of persistent symptoms in those disorders as long COVID.

Abstract Introduction Lung adenocarcinoma progresses stepwise from atypical adenomatous hyperplasia to adenocarcinoma in situ (AIS), followed by minimally invasive adenocarcinoma (MIA), and then obvious invasive adenocarcinoma. In this study, we examined the protein expression profiles of early and epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) mutation‐positive lung adenocarcinomas. Methods Fifteen cases of small and EGFR mutation‐positive adenocarcinomas were collected, including AIS, MIA, and small invasive adenocarcinoma (SIA). We examined their protein expression profiles by tandem mass tag (TMT)‐labeling liquid chromatography‐mass spectrometry (LC–MS/MS) and compared the results between AIS and MIA versus SIA. The differentially expressed proteins were then verified by Western blot analysis and immunohistochemistry (IHC). The clinicopathological implications of the proteins were also examined by IHC. Results A total of 4220 proteins were identified by LC–MS/MS analysis. Pathway analysis of the differentially expressed proteins revealed that pathways related to interferon α/β signaling, glutamate and glutamine metabolism, and gluconeogenesis were upregulated in SIA relative to AIS. Among the 13 differentially expressed proteins, cellular retinoic acid binding protein 2 (CRABP2), delta(24)‐sterol reductase (DHCR24), and adenylate kinase 4 (AK4) were expressed significantly more strongly in SIA than in AIS. Patients with high expression of CRABP2, DHCR24, and AK4 showed a significantly poorer outcome than those with low expression. Conclusion In comparison with AIS, SIA shows differences in several different protein expression pathways. Furthermore, CRABP2, DHCR24, and AK4 are useful IHC markers for diagnosis of lung adenocarcinoma invasiveness and may be associated with malignant progression of AIS.

Abstract Background Nab‐paclitaxel (nab‐PTX) has better transfer to tumor tissue than cremophor‐based paclitaxel. It suggests that the optimum dose of nab‐PTX might be lower than the dose and schedule that is widely used. We designed a randomized phase II trial to examine the clinical utility and safety of nab‐PTX in patients with previously treated advanced non‐small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Methods Patients were randomly allocated (1:1) to receive nab‐PTX monotherapy at 100 mg/m2 (group A) or 70 mg/m2 (group B). The primary endpoint was progression‐free survival (PFS). Secondary endpoints included overall survival (OS), objective response rate (ORR), and adverse events (AEs). Results Finally, 81 patients were randomized. Similar results were observed in both groups for PFS (3.75 vs. 3.71 months), OS (13.50 vs. 16.13 months), or ORR (20.5% vs. 23.1%). The incidences of grade 3 or worse AEs were 57.5% in group A and 41.5% in group B. The proportion of serious side effects was 10.0% in group A and 4.9% in group B. Conclusion Both standard dose and low dose of nab‐PTX monotherapy are active for previously treated NSCLC patients with better safety profile. Therefore, nab‐PTX 70 mg/m2 dose and schedule in the trial would be a reasonable option.

27. Prediction of chaperonin GroE substrates using small structural patterns of proteins

Molecular chaperones are indispensable proteins that assist the folding of aggregation‐prone proteins into their functional native states, thereby maintaining organized cellular systems. Two of the best‐characterized chaperones are the Escherichia coli chaperonins GroEL and GroES (GroE), for which in vivo obligate substrates have been identified by proteome‐wide experiments. These substrates comprise various proteins but exhibit remarkable structural features. They include a number of α/β proteins, particularly those adopting the TIM β/α barrel fold. This observation led us to speculate that GroE obligate substrates share a structural motif. Based on this hypothesis, we exhaustively compared substrate structures with the MICAN alignment tool, which detects common structural patterns while ignoring the connectivity or orientation of secondary structural elements. We selected four (or five) substructures with hydrophobic indices that were mostly included in substrates and excluded in others, and developed a GroE obligate substrate discriminator. The substructures are structurally similar and superimposable on the 2‐layer 2α4β sandwich, the most popular protein substructure, implying that targeting this structural pattern is a useful strategy for GroE to assist numerous proteins. Seventeen false positives predicted by our methods were experimentally examined using GroE‐depleted cells, and 9 proteins were confirmed to be novel GroE obligate substrates. Together, these results demonstrate the utility of our common substructure hypothesis and prediction method.

Abstract Background The repeated global pandemic of the new virus has led to interest in the possibility of severe pneumonia among cancer patients and survivors. Here, we aimed to assess the association between incident cancer and risk of death from pneumonia in Japanese in a large population‐based cohort study. Methods We used the data from The Japan Public Health Center‐based Prospective Study (JPHC Study), which enrolled subjects aged 40 to 69 between 1990 and 1994 and followed their cancer incidence and mortality until 2013. After identifying 103,757 eligible subjects for analysis and imputing missing data on covariates by the chained equations approach, we conducted propensity score‐matched analysis for 1:4 matching, leaving 14,520 cases diagnosed with cancer and 48,947 controls without cancer during the study period for final analysis. A Cox proportional hazards regression model was used to estimate the hazard ratio (HR) and corresponding confidence interval (CI) for the risk of death from pneumonia with comparison of cancer cases and cancer‐free controls. Abstract Introduction Computer‐aided diagnostic systems have been developed for the detection and differential diagnosis of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID‐19) pneumonia using imaging studies to characterise a patient's current condition. In this radiomic study, we propose a system for predicting COVID‐19 patients in danger of death using portable chest X‐ray images. Methods In this retrospective study, we selected 100 patients, including ten that died and 90 that recovered from the COVID‐19‐AR database of the Cancer Imaging Archive. Since it can be difficult to analyse portable chest X‐ray images of patients with COVID‐19 because bone components overlap with the abnormal patterns of this disease, we employed a bone‐suppression technique during pre‐processing. A total of 620 radiomic features were measured in the left and right lung regions, and four radiomic features were selected using the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator technique. We distinguished death from recovery cases using a linear discriminant analysis (LDA) and a support vector machine (SVM). The leave‐one‐out method was used to train and test the classifiers, and the area under the receiver‐operating characteristic curve (AUC) was used to evaluate discriminative performance. Results The AUCs for LDA and SVM were 0.756 and 0.959, respectively. The discriminative performance was improved when the bone‐suppression technique was employed. When the SVM was used, the sensitivity for predicting disease severity was 90.9% (9/10), and the specificity was 95.6% (86/90). Conclusions We believe that the radiomic features of portable chest X‐ray images can predict COVID‐19 patients in danger of death.

Abstract Global longitudinal strain (GLS), a new cardiac parameter measured by the speckle‐tracking method, is reportedly more sensitive than ejection fraction (EF) in detecting slight cardiac dysfunction in heart failure patients. We validated the utility of GLS in allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) patients during a long‐term follow‐up. Medical records of patients who underwent allogeneic HSCT between 2013 and 2020 were reviewed retrospectively. We evaluated the last echocardiography performed before transplantation and those performed annually during the 5 years after transplantation. We also investigated newly diagnosed cardiac events, which developed after HSCT. Among 85 patients, 22 used cardioprotective drugs. The median follow‐up duration in surviving patients was 54.1 months (range, 2.9–92.6 months). GLS significantly decreased year by year, and patients taking cardioprotective agents tended to have a better GLS at 5 years than at 3 years, while EF did not change. Fifteen patients developed newly diagnosed cardiac events. Multivariate analysis revealed that low GLS and high serum ferritin levels at baseline were independently associated with the development of cardiac events. Therefore, we need a continuous follow‐up of cardiac function by GLS and prescription of cardioprotective drugs might be considered for HSCT patients with low GLS. Further research is warranted.

Abstract In acute myeloid leukemia (AML), the heterogeneity of genetic and epigenetic characteristics makes treatment difficult. The prognosis for AML is therefore poor, and there is an urgent need for new treatments for this condition. Gemtuzumab ozogamicin (GO), the first antibody‐drug conjugate (ADC), targets the CD33 antigen expressed in over 90% of AML cases. GO therefore has the potential to counter the heterogeneity of AML patients. However, a major clinical problem is that drug resistance to GO diminishes its effect over time. Here, we report that the inhibition of glycogen synthase kinase 3 (GSK3) alone overcomes several forms of GO resistance at concentrations without antileukemic effects. The GSK3 inhibitors tested significantly enhanced the cytotoxic effect of GO in AML cell lines. We elucidated four mechanisms of enhancement: (1) increased expression of CD33, the target antigen of GO; (2) activation of a lysosomal function essential for hydrolysis of the GO linker; (3) reduced expression of MDR1 that eliminates calicheamicin, the payload of GO; and (4) reduced expression of the anti‐apoptotic factor Bcl‐2. A similar combination effect was observed against patient‐derived primary AML cells. Combining GO with GSK3 inhibitors may be efficacious in treating heterogeneous AML.

Abstract Asciminib, a first‐in‐class, allosteric inhibitor of BCR‐ABL1 that acts by STAMP (Specifically Targeting the ABL Myristoyl Pocket), is a novel therapeutic option for patients with chronic myeloid leukemia (CML). In the global, phase 3, open‐label ASCEMBL study in patients with CML in chronic phase (CML‐CP) pretreated with ≥2 tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) (NCT03106779), asciminib (40 mg twice‐daily) demonstrated significant superiority over the ATP‐competitive TKI bosutinib (500 mg once daily) for the primary endpoint of major molecular response (MMR; BCR::ABL1 transcript levels on the international scale [BCR::ABL1IS] ≤0.1%) at week 24. Here, we report results from a descriptive subgroup analysis of Japanese patients enrolled in ASCEMBL study (data cut‐off: May 25, 2020). Overall, 16 Japanese patients were randomized (asciminib, n = 13; bosutinib, n = 3). At week 24, the MMR rate with asciminib was 30.8% (4/13; 95% confidence interval [CI], 9.09–61.43). BCR::ABL1IS ≤1% and complete cytogenic response (CCyR) at week 24 were 61.5% (8/13 patients) and 50.0% (4/8 patients), respectively. In the bosutinib group, no patient achieved MMR, CCyR, or BCR::ABL1IS ≤1%, but results were limited by the low number of patients. The safety profile of asciminib was comparable to that previously observed in the overall study population. Findings from this Japanese subgroup analysis of the ASCEMBL study support the use of asciminib for the treatment of Japanese patients with CML‐CP previously treated with ≥2 TKIs. Abstract Enzalutamide, apalutamide, and darolutamide are currently recommended for patients with non‐metastatic castration‐resistant prostate cancer (nmCRPC), but cross‐resistance of androgen receptor‐axis‐targeted therapies (ARAT) occurs. Because darolutamide has a distinct chemical structure to other non‐steroidal antiandrogens, it may be effective for nmCRPC patients resistant to enzalutamide or apalutamide. We retrospectively evaluated the efficacy of switching to darolutamide in patients with nmCRPC. We included nine nmCRPC patients who experienced biochemical progression on enzalutamide or apalutamide and were switched over to darolutamide. Five patients (55.5%) had a PSA response >50% decline after starting darolutamide, with an average of 73% PSA decline. Median progression‐free survival was 6 months. In conclusion, an ARAT switch from enzalutamide or apalutamide to darolutamide might be effective for nmCRPC. Although the validation in a large‐scale cohort is necessary, the switch to darolutamide could be a promising therapeutic option after the progression of 1st line ARAT in nmCRPC patients.

Small‐cell lung cancer (SCLC) is associated with a high mortality rate and limited treatment efficacy. We created a microRNA (miRNA) expression signature by RNA sequencing using specimens from patients with SCLC who had failed treatment. Forty‐nine miRNAs were downregulated in SCLC tissues and were candidate tumor‐suppressive miRNAs. In this signature, both guide and passenger strands were downregulated for five miRNAs (miR‐30a, miR‐34b, miR‐34c, miR‐223, and miR‐4529). Recent studies have revealed that passenger strands of miRNAs are involved in the molecular pathogenesis of human cancer. Although miR‐30a‐5p (the guide strand) has been shown to be a tumor‐suppressive miRNA in various types of cancers, miR‐30a‐3p (the passenger strand) function is not well characterized in SCLC cells. We investigated the functional significance of miR‐30a‐3p and oncogenic genes regulated by miR‐30a‐3p in SCLC cells. Ectopic expression assays showed that miR‐30a‐3p expression inhibited cell proliferation and induced cell cycle arrest and apoptosis in two SCLC cell lines. Furthermore, in silico database searches and gene expression assays identified 25 genes as putative targets of miR‐30a‐3p in SCLC cells. Luciferase reporter assays revealed that downstream neighbor of SON (DONSON) was directly regulated by miR‐30a‐3p in SCLC cells. Knockdown of DONSON induced cell cycle arrest in SCLC cells and DONSON overexpression were detected in SCLC clinical samples. Analyzing the regulatory networks of tumor‐suppressive miRNAs may lead to the identification of therapeutic targets in SCLC.

Abstract Background Niemann–Pick disease type C (NPC) is a fatal neurodegenerative disorder caused by abnormal intracellular cholesterol trafficking. Cyclodextrins (CDs), the most promising therapeutic candidates for NPC, but with concerns about ototoxicity, are cyclic oligosaccharides with dual functions of unesterified cholesterol (UC) shuttle and sink that catalytically enhance the bidirectional flux and net efflux of UC, respectively, between the cell membrane and the extracellular acceptors. However, the properties of CDs that regulate these functions and how they could be used to improve treatments for NPC are unclear. Methods We estimated CD–UC complexation for nine CD derivatives derived from native α‐, β‐, and γ‐CD with different cavity sizes, using solubility and molecular docking analyses. The stoichiometry and complexation ability of the resulting complexes were investigated in relation to the therapeutic effectiveness and toxicity of each CD derivative in NPC experimental models. Findings We found that shuttle and sink activities of CDs are dependent on cavity size‐dependent stoichiometry and substituent‐associated stability of CD–UC complexation. The ability of CD derivatives to form 1:1 and 2:1 complexes with UC were correlated with their ability to normalize intracellular cholesterol trafficking serving as shuttle and with their cytotoxicity associated with cellular UC efflux acting as sink, respectively, in NPC model cells. Notably, the ability of CD derivatives to form an inclusion complex with UC was responsible for not only efficacy but ototoxicity, while a representative derivative without this ability negligibly affected auditory function, underscoring its preventability. Conclusions Our findings highlight the importance of strategies for optimizing the molecular structure of CDs to overcome this functional dilemma in the treatment of NPC.

Background This study assessed risk factors for mitral regurgitation (MR) recurrence or functional mitral stenosis during long‐term follow‐up in patients undergoing mitral valve repair for isolated posterior mitral leaflet prolapse. Methods and Results We assessed a consecutive series of 511 patients who underwent primary mitral valve repair for isolated posterior leaflet prolapse between 2001 and 2021. Annuloplasty using a partial band was selected in 86.3%. The leaflet resection technique was used in 83.0%, whereas the chordal replacement without resection was used in 14.5%. Risk factors were analyzed for MR recurrence ≥grade 2 or functional mitral stenosis with mean transmitral pressure gradient ≥5 mm Hg using a multivariable Fine–Gray regression model. The 1‐, 5‐, and 10‐year cumulative incidence of MR ≥grade 2 was 7.8%, 22.7%, and 30.1%, respectively, whereas that of mean transmitral pressure gradient ≥5 mm Hg was 8.1%, 20.6%, and 29.3%, respectively. Abstract Endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) has become the standard treatment for superficial esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (SESCC). However, the treatment strategy for SESCC complicated by esophageal varices (EVs) has not been established. We report two cases of SESCC in patients with alcoholic cirrhosis complicated by EVs who underwent ESD. Case 1 presented with EVs on the anal side of the SESCC, and endoscopic variceal ligation (EVL) was performed before ESD. After EVL, the SESCC was successfully treated by ESD without any adverse events. Case 2 presented EVs from the anal side of the SESCC to the submucosa just below the SESCC. Then, EVL and endoscopic injection sclerotherapy with polidocanol were performed before ESD. However, ESD was not completed because of severe bleeding by uncontrolled blood flow below and around the SESCC. Bleeding during ESD was controlled in case 1, but not in case 2.

Abstract Objectives To assess the usefulness of linked color imaging (LCI), a recently developed image‐enhanced endoscopy technique, in the endoscopic diagnosis of eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE). Methods Thirty white light images (WLIs) and 30 WLI+LCI images collected from patients with and without EoE were randomly and blindly reviewed by 10 endoscopists, including four experts (Exs) and six non‐Exs. Edema, ring, exudate furrows, and strictures were rated on the adjusted EoE endoscopic reference score; the diagnosis of EoE was assessed. Using the kappa value, inter‐ and intra‐observer agreements were analyzed among endoscopists. Results WLI+LCI images had a higher diagnostic accuracy for EoE than WLIs (0.85 vs. 0.70, respectively), especially in non‐Exs or endoscopists with no experience with EoE patients. Inter‐observer agreement for WLI+LCI images statistically surpassed WLIs for furrows (kappa, 0.73 vs. 0.67, respectively; p = 0.0013), stricture (kappa, 0.51 vs. 0.39, respectively; p = 0.0072), and diagnosis (kappa, 0.67 vs. 0.57, respectively; p < 0.0001) of EoE. The increase in inter‐observer agreement in WLI+LCI images allowed for a reduction in the differences between the Exs and non‐Ex endoscopists. Intra‐observer agreement for WLI+LCI images surpassed WLIs for a ring (kappa, 0.62 vs. 0.43, p = 0.0052), and a similar trend was found in exudates, furrows, and diagnosis irrespective of the Exs or non‐Exs. Conclusions LCI can contribute to the improvement of the endoscopic diagnosis for EoE, with “moderate” to “substantial” consistency, by enhancing the visibility of abnormal findings, leading to reduced diagnostic disparities among endoscopists.

Abstract Primary pulmonary diffuse large B‐cell lymphoma is a rare entity. We describe a case of pulmonary lymphoma with multiple nodules mimicking metastases in a treated patient with rheumatoid arthritis. A 73‐year‐old man was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis at the age of 30. He was treated with leflunomide. He was followed up for a nontuberculous mycobacterial infection. He underwent percutaneous coronary intervention for acute myocardial infarction at the age of 70. In April 2022, routine follow‐up revealed new‐onset multiple nodules on chest computed tomography (CT). A position emission tomography/CT scan with 18F‐fluorodeoxyglucose showed a low‐high maximum standardized uptake value by multiple nodules. Pathologic examination of a video‐assisted thoracic surgical biopsy revealed pulmonary diffuse large B‐cell lymphoma. Systemic chemotherapy with rituximab, cyclophosphamide, vincristine, and prednisolone reduced and eliminated multiple nodules. Pulmonary lymphoma should be considered as a differential diagnosis in the case of multiple nodules on a chest CT.

Abstract The objective of this research was to acquire a basic knowledge of architectural planning to understand the changeability and long‐term occupancy for dwellings from the survey and analysis of actual occupancy records and conditions of apartment buildings over a long period. The subjects of the survey were households that were long‐term occupants of public rental housing estates that were constructed in the 1960s. The dwellings and records of infill improvements were analyzed along with changes in family structures. In some apartment buildings that were surveyed, an additional living area had been built onto the balcony side, and as a result of having more living space, young couples with children had moved in later. In contrast apartment buildings that had not had any additions were occupied by only elderly households. For households that wished to continue living in the same place for a long term, despite rental housing restrictions, scenarios were observed in which infill improvements had been actively implemented on the inside to improve habitability.

Abstract This paper reports on changes in lifestyles and infill renovation of a multi‐dwelling housing complex built based on the Century Housing System (CHS) in 1987. The purpose of this research is to gain insight into the adaptability and changeability of the infill system to extend the life of such housing. This is the first investigation on CHS housing since it was first occupied. The authors found that the building components that were designed to be used and replaced every 12 to 25 years were actually replaced in many units as planned.

Abstract The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of the Great East Japan Earthquake on the government office reorganization plan. To understand the reorganization plans of 182 government buildings, the author surveyed the websites of 44 municipalities and conducted interviews by telephone and email. It is believed that assigning government offices as disaster prevention centers in each local area and centralizing the functions of public facilities necessary for local life in each government office will realize the combination of disaster prevention and convenient daily life.

Abstract Background The impact of tumor volume on prognosis is unclear. We therefore investigated the correlation between tumor volume and prognosis in patients with complete resection of thymoma. Methods A total of 177 patients who underwent curative surgical resection for thymoma were retrospectively collected and reviewed. We performed a volumetric analysis of each case using the modified version of “Watchin GGO” and evaluated the relationship between tumor volume and recurrence. Results The median tumor size was 5.0 (range 0.5–15) cm, and the median tumor volume was 35.1 (range 0.265–881.0) cm3. The Pearson product–moment correlation coefficient was 0.658, suggesting a moderately strong connection between tumor volume and tumor size. To determine the impact of tumor volume on tumor recurrence, receiver operating characteristic curves of the recurrence and tumor volume were calculated. The area under the curve was 0.65 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.51–0.80), and the optimal cutoff level of the tumor volume for recurrence was 82.6 cm3, with a sensitivity and specificity of 0.64 (11/17) and 0.74 (119/160), respectively. Patients with tumors ≥82.6 cm3 had a significantly worse recurrence‐free survival than those with smaller tumors (p = 0.0122, hazard ratio: 2.99), with 5‐year recurrence rates of 74.9% (95% CI: 58.6%–86.3%) versus 88.9% (95% CI: 79.0%–94.4%). Conclusion The volume of completely resectable thymoma may be a useful prognostic indicator.

Abstract Background An ablation catheter capable of contact force (CF) and local impedance (LI) monitoring (IntellaNav StablePoint, Boston Scientific) has been recently launched. We evaluated the relationship between the CF and LI values during radiofrequency catheter ablation (RFCA) along the cavotricuspid isthmus (CTI). Methods Fifty consecutive subjects who underwent a CTI‐RFCA using IntellaNav StablePoint catheters were retrospectively studied. The initial CF and LI at the start of the RF applications and mean CF and minimum LI during the RF applications were measured. The absolute and percentage LI drops were calculated as the difference between the initial and minimum LIs and 100 × absolute LI drop/initial LI, respectively. Results We analyzed 602 first‐pass RF applications. A weak correlation was observed between the initial CF and LI (r = 0.13) and between the mean CF and LI drops (r = 0.22). 49. Predictors and preventers of postoperative bedridden status in the elderly ages over 75 after emergency general surgery: a retrospective cohort study

Aim We investigated the proportion of bedridden patients after emergency surgery among the elderly ages over 75; defined as the latter‐stage elderly in Japan, the associated factors, and interventions used to prevent it. Methods Eighty‐two latter‐stage elderly patients who underwent emergency surgery for non‐traumatic illness between January 2020 and June 2021 in our hospital were included in the study. Backgrounds and various perioperative factors were compared retrospectively between the groups including patients who became bedridden from Performance Status Scale 0 to 3 before admission (Bedridden group) and those who did not (Keep group). Results Three cases of death and seven patients who were bedridden before admission were excluded. The 72 remaining patients were divided into the Bedridden group (n = 10, 13.9%) and the Keep group (n = 62, 86.1%). There were significant differences in the prevalence of dementia, pre‐ and postoperative circulatory dynamics, renal dysfunction, coagulation abnormality, length of stay in the high care unit/intensive care unit, and number of hospital days, with a relative risk of 13 (1.74–96.71), a sensitivity of 1.00, and a specificity of 0.67 for a preoperative shock index of 0.7 or higher being associated with the Bedridden group. Among patients with a preoperative shock index of 0.7 or higher, there was a significant difference in SI at 24 h postoperatively between the two groups. Conclusion Preoperative shock index may be the most sensitive predictor. Early circulatory stabilization seems to be protective against patients becoming bedridden.

Abstract Measuring flow of gases is of fundamental importance yet is typically done with complex equipment. There is, therefore, a longstanding need for a simple and inexpensive means of flow measurement. Here, gas flow is measured using an extremely simple device that consists of an Ar plasma‐treated polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) slab adhered on a glass substrate with a tight seal. This device does not even have a channel, instead, gas can flow between the PDMS and the glass by deforming the PDMS wall, in other words, by making an interstice as a temporary path for the flow. The formation of the temporary path results in a compressive bending stress at the inner wall of the path, which leads to the formation of well‐ordered wrinkles, and hence, the emergence of structural color that changes the optical transmittance of the device. Although it is very simple, this setup works sufficiently well to measure arbitrary gases and analyzes their flow rates, densities, and viscosities based on the change in color. It is also demonstrated that this technique is applicable to the flow‐induced display of a pattern such as a logo for advanced applications.
