Two florescent xanthene-cyanamide lysosomal trackers emitting strongly at ∼525 nm were prepared from fluorescein and rhodol methyl esters in microwave-assisted reactions. Both forms named "off" (nonfluorescent lactam) and "on" (strongly fluorescent ring-opened amide) have been comprehensively characterized out by using a combination of NMR spectroscopy, X-ray analysis, fluorimetry and confocal microscopy. Known rhodamines bearing electron-withdrawing groups (EWGs) exhibit an equilibrium between non-fluorescent (off) and fluorescent (on) depending on the dielectric constant of the medium. Here, cyanamide was introduced as EWG amine into the fluorescein and rhodol framework. Unlike rhodamine-type dyes, the ring-opened forms of fluorescein- and rhodol-cyanamides are stable in protic solvents under circumneutral and basic pH conditions. The osteoblastic cell line MC3T3-E1 from C57BL/6 mouse calvaria was used for confocal imaging where the different organelles and nuclei were distinguished by using an orthogonal combination of fluorescent dyes.

Ilmenite, general formula FeTiO3, has been proposed as possible conversion anode material for lithium- and sodium-ion batteries, with theoretical capacity of 530 mAhg−1. Experimentally, the observed specific capacity for pristine ilmenite is far away from the theoretical value; for this reason, the control of morphology via alkaline hydrothermal treatment has been proposed as possible strategy to improve the electrochemical performance. At the same time FeTiO3 is prone to react with sodium and potassium hydroxide, as already demonstrated by studies on the degradation of ilmenite for the extraction of TiO2. In this paper we demonstrate that the alkaline treatment does not induce a morphological modification of the FeTiO3 powders but involved the degradation of the precursor material with the formation of different phases. A complete physicochemical and electrochemical characterization is performed with the aim of correlating structural and functional properties of the obtained products.

International audience; Growth and division experiments on phospholipid boundaries were carried out using glass microsphere‐supported phospholipid (DOPC) giant vesicles (GVs) fed with a fatty acid solution (oleic acid) at two distinct feeding rates. Both fast and slow feeding methods produced daughter GVs. Under slow feeding conditions the membrane growth process (evagination, buds, filaments) was observed in detail by fluorescence microscopy. The density difference between supported mother vesicles and newly formed daughter vesicles allowed their easy separation. Mass spectrometric analysis of the resulting mother and daughter GVs showed that the composition of both vesicle types was a mixture of original supported phospholipids and added fatty acids reflecting the total composition of amphiphiles after the feeding process. Thus, self‐reproduction of phospholipid vesicles can take place under preservation of the lipid composition but different aggregate size.

Mixing Butlerow's carbohydrate precursors with Traube's 5-formylaminopyrimidines has led to the formation of prebiotic purine nucleosides whereas the mixing of 5-phosphoribose with barbituric acid and melamine gave supramolecular fibers from stacks of Whitesides’ rosettas.

The HLA-A, -B and -C locus gene frequencies and the significant A, B and B, C haplotypes of the population of Campania (Southern Italy) are reported. From a comparison of gene frequencies and from an overall genetic distance evaluation with other European and Mediterranean populations the typical Mediterranean structure of the Campanian population is confirmed. While keeping several Middle Eastern features, it places itself as far from Northern Italy (Bergamo) as from the Spanish and the French populations. Among all the groups compared, including Turkish and Lebanese, the largest distance is measured from the English, the Danish and the German populations.

Cyclopeptides have recently emerged as attractive molecular scaffolds for the multivalent presentation of carbohydrates in a well-defined constrained spatial orientation. This mini-review describes the last advances on the synthesis and the biological applications of these particular structures, going from low molecular weight glycoclusters to fully synthetic nano-sized glycodendrimers.

The high efficiency and selectivity of the thiol−ene radical reaction has been validated by the photoinduced coupling of anomeric sugar thiols with sugar alkenes to give 1,6-linked S-disaccharides in good to excellent yields (76−92%) and high diastereoselectivities (up to 99%). The reaction appears to be well-qualified as an exemplar click process.

Orbital rhabdomyosarcoma accounts for one-fourth of the primary tumors in the head and neck region. Modern treatment modalities have led to a 2-year survival rate of about 90% in these patients. However, new therapeutic trials are designed to reduce complications and salvage more than 90% of orbital cases. Between 1979 and 1990, 12 children affected by primary orbital rhabdomyosarcoma have been diagnosed and treated at the University of Naples. Ten of them have been uniformly treated by biopsy, followed by immediate radiation and combined chemotherapy. All 12 patients are alive and free of detectable disease, from a minimum of 7 months to a maximum of 123 months after diagnosis. In all children, ocular structures have been spared and the complications observed until now have been few. The above results suggest that the association of immediate radiation therapy and chemotherapy might represent an optimal tool for treatment of orbital rhabdomyosarcoma.
