2. A Survey of Chinese Pig Farms and Human Healthcare Isolates Reveals Separate Human and Animal Methicillin‐Resistant Staphylococcus aureus Populations

Abstract

Abstract There has been increasing concern that the overuse of antibiotics in livestock farming is contributing to the burden of antimicrobial resistance in people. Farmed animals in Europe and North America, particularly pigs, provide a reservoir for livestock‐associated methicillin‐resistant Staphylococcus aureus (LA‐MRSA ST398 lineage) found in people. This study is designed to investigate the contribution of MRSA from Chinese pig farms to human infection. A collection of 483 MRSA are isolated from 55 farms and 4 hospitals in central China, a high pig farming density area. CC9 MRSA accounts for 97.2% of all farm isolates, but is not present in hospital isolates. ST398 isolates are found on farms and hospitals, but none of them formed part of the “LA‐MRSA ST398 lineage” present in Europe and North America. The hospital ST398 MRSA isolate form a clade that is clearly separate from the farm ST398 isolates. Despite the presence of high levels of MRSA found on Chinese pig farms, the authors find no evidence of them spilling over to the human population. Nevertheless, the ST398 MRSA obtained from hospitals appear to be part of a widely distributed lineage in China. The new animal‐adapted ST398 lineage that has emerged in China is of concern.

Abstract

The prevalence of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is higher in Asians than Caucasians, with higher frequency of renal and other major organ manifestations that carry a poorer prognosis. The outcome of SLE is still unsatisfactory in many parts of the Asia Pacific region due to limited access to healthcare systems, poor treatment adherence and adverse reactions to therapies. The Asia Pacific League of Associations for Rheumatology (APLAR) SLE special interest group has recently published a set of consensus recommendation statements for the management of SLE in the Asia Pacific region. The current article is a supplement of systematic literature search (SLR) to the prevalence and treatment of non-renal manifestations of SLE in Asian patients.

6. Determining the effects of tencha‐ro drying on key volatile compounds in tencha ( Camellia sinensis ) through gas chromatography–mass spectrometry

Abstract

Drying is the key process through which the aroma of tencha forms. However, the effects of drying method on volatiles are unknown. We compared tencha-ro drying with regular drying. Volatiles in tencha infusions were extracted using headspace solid-phase microextraction and solvent-assisted flavor evaporation combined with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Partial least squares (PLS), odor activity value (OAV), and heat map analyses were performed to identify the optimal drying method for creating a seaweed-like aroma. Changes in the key volatile compounds of the samples were investigated. The tencha infusions contained 125 volatiles with nine chemical structures. According to the sensory evaluation, tencha-ro drying was the optimal method for producing high-quality tencha with an intense and consistent seaweed-like aroma. The PLS model accurately distinguished among the types of tencha. By combining OAVs with screening through multivariate statistical analysis, six volatile compounds were revealed to contribute substantially to tencha's seaweed-like aroma: 2-ethyl-3,5-dimethylpyrazine, 2-ethyl-6-methylpyrazine, 2-ethyl-5-methylpyrazine, dimethyl sulfide, β-ionone, and 2-formyl-1-methylpyrrole. The findings provide a theoretical basis and technical guidance for the processing of high-quality tencha with a strong seaweed-like aroma. PRACTICAL APPLICATION: This study demonstrated that tencha-ro drying contributes to the formation of a seaweed-like aroma in tencha and provides theoretical guidance for tea factories to use the appropriate drying methods for high-quality tencha.

Abstract

Fresh tea leaves (Camellia sinensis; Chuanxiaoye) used to make tencha tea are a combination of the stem and leaf. Tencha made from the leaf alone is considered a high-quality tencha beverage with a seaweed-like aroma, mellow taste, and a green appearance. However, no study has investigated the differences between these two variants. In this study, the effects of stem removal on physicochemical properties and sensory quality of tencha beverage were investigated. The appearance feature, taste, and aroma were evaluated, and the results indicated that stem removal improved the quality of tencha beverages. The water extract, total free amino acids, total catechin, epigallocatechin gallate, caffeine, and chlorophyll were higher in leaf-only tencha (LOT) than in leaf and stem tencha (LST), whereas the crude fiber and phenol ammonia ratios were lower in LOT than in LST. Principal component analysis and hierarchical clustering analysis further discriminated between the tencha beverages with different stem contents. This study provided a theoretical basis for quality control by adopting a stem-leaf separation process in tencha manufacturing. PRACTICAL APPLICATION: This research provides theoretical guidance for improving tencha quality during manufacturing.

Abstract

This article examines some of the basic questions about silicon module recycling: (1) What can be recovered from silicon modules? (2) What recycling technologies are needed? (3) What are the potential revenues for different recycling scenarios? And (4) what are the major challenges for different recycling scenarios? Three recycling scenarios are considered: module reuse, component extraction, and material extraction. Recycling process sequences for different scenarios are outlined. The discussions conclude that module reuse generates the highest revenue with the fewest processing steps, while material extraction leads to the lowest revenue with the most processing steps. It is suggested that gentle and clean separation of silicon solar cells from the glass pane is a critical technology for silicon module recycling. It is also argued that two low-concentration metals must be recovered from silicon modules: silver as a scarce material and lead as a toxic material. Their recovery requires chemical methods, while bulky materials including glass cullet, aluminum frame, and copper wiring can be recovered with physical methods. The silicon in the cells can be extracted with different qualities: ferro-silicon, metallurgical-grade silicon, or solar-grade silicon, with a higher revenue and more complicated recycling process for purer silicon. Markets outside the solar industry for the recovered silicon should be explored. The biggest challenge for module reuse is to find a large and sustained market for hundreds of gigawatts peak of decommissioned modules a year, and the biggest challenge for component extraction is the many different module and cell structures on the market and cell efficiency variability. For all the three scenarios, the cost of collecting and processing waste modules is a common challenge.

Abstract

The electronic absorption, fluorescence, and excitation spectra of furo[3,4-c]furanone (1) have been measured in different solvents at different concentrations. We observed a complex dependence of absorption and excitation spectra as a function of the concentration in CH2Cl2 and THF due to aggregate formation. Interestingly, the fluorescence spectra were not affected. Resolving the puzzle was made possible by the fact that 1 fits perfectly into the channels of zeolite L (ZL) microcrystals to form 1-ZL guest-host composites. The geometry of the ZL channel system ensures a well-defined orientation of the embedded dye molecules, thereby leading to a preferred orientation of their electronic transition dipole moment (ETDM) and thus to objects with pronounced optical anisotropy properties. This enabled us to understand that in solution the monomers that are present at low concentration form an aggregate in which the molecules sit on top of each other and arrange into a J-type aggregate configuration at higher concentrations. The signature of the latter is observed in the 1-ZL composites. This seems to be the first example in which the insertion of molecules into a nanochannel microcrystal has helped in understanding the weak intermolecular interactions that take place in solution.
