Background: There is a common perception that smoking generally helps people to manage stress, and may be a form of 'self‐medication' in people with mental health conditions. However, there are biologically plausible reasons why smoking may worsen mental health through neuroadaptations arising from chronic smoking, leading to frequent nicotine withdrawal symptoms (e.g. anxiety, depression, irritability), in which case smoking cessation may help to improve rather than worsen mental health. Objectives: To examine the association between tobacco smoking cessation and change in mental health. Search Methods: We searched the Cochrane Tobacco Addiction Group's Specialised Register, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, MEDLINE, Embase, PsycINFO, and the trial registries clinicaltrials.gov and the International Clinical Trials Registry Platform, from 14 April 2012 to 07 January 2020. These were updated searches of a previously‐conducted non‐Cochrane review where searches were conducted from database inception to 13 April 2012. Selection Criteria: We included controlled before‐after studies, including randomised controlled trials (RCTs) analysed by smoking status at follow‐up, and longitudinal cohort studies. In order to be eligible for inclusion studies had to recruit adults who smoked tobacco, and assess whether they quit or continued smoking during the study. They also had to measure a mental health outcome at baseline and at least six weeks later. Data Collection and Analysis: We followed standard Cochrane methods for screening and data extraction. Our primary outcomes were change in depression symptoms, anxiety symptoms or mixed anxiety and depression symptoms between baseline and follow‐up. Secondary outcomes included change in symptoms of stress, psychological quality of life, positive affect, and social impact or social quality of life, as well as new incidence of depression, anxiety, or mixed anxiety and depression disorders. We assessed the risk of bias for the primary outcomes using a modified ROBINS‐I tool. For change in mental health outcomes, we calculated the pooled standardised mean difference (SMD) and 95% confidence interval (95% CI) for the difference in change in mental health from baseline to follow‐up between those who had quit smoking and those who had continued to smoke. For the incidence of psychological disorders, we calculated odds ratios (ORs) and 95% CIs. For all meta‐analyses we used a generic inverse variance random‐effects model and quantified statistical heterogeneity using I2. We conducted subgroup analyses to investigate any differences in associations between sub‐populations, i.e. unselected people with mental illness, people with physical chronic diseases. We assessed the certainty of evidence for our primary outcomes (depression, anxiety, and mixed depression and anxiety) and our secondary social impact outcome using the eight GRADE considerations relevant to non‐randomised studies (risk of bias, inconsistency, imprecision, indirectness, publication bias, magnitude of the effect, the influence of all plausible residual confounding, the presence of a dose‐response gradient). Main Results: We included 102 studies representing over 169,500 participants. Sixty‐two of these were identified in the updated search for this review and 40 were included in the original version of the review. Sixty‐three studies provided data on change in mental health, 10 were included in meta‐analyses of incidence of mental health disorders, and 31 were synthesised narratively. For all primary outcomes, smoking cessation was associated with an improvement in mental health symptoms compared with continuing to smoke: anxiety symptoms (SMD −0.28, 95% CI −0.43 to −0.13; 15 studies, 3141 participants; I2 = 69%; low‐certainty evidence); depression symptoms: (SMD −0.30, 95% CI −0.39 to −0.21; 34 studies, 7156 participants; I2 = 69%' very low‐certainty evidence); mixed anxiety and depression symptoms (SMD −0.31, 95% CI −0.40 to −0.22; 8 studies, 2829 participants; I2 = 0%; moderate certainty evidence). These findings were robust to preplanned sensitivity analyses, and subgroup analysis generally did not produce evidence of differences in the effect size among subpopulations or based on methodological characteristics. All studies were deemed to be at serious risk of bias due to possible time‐varying confounding, and three studies measuring depression symptoms were judged to be at critical risk of bias overall. There was also some evidence of funnel plot asymmetry. For these reasons, we rated our certainty in the estimates for anxiety as low, for depression as very low, and for mixed anxiety and depression as moderate. For the secondary outcomes, smoking cessation was associated with an improvement in symptoms of stress (SMD −0.19, 95% CI −0.34 to −0.04; 4 studies, 1792 participants; I2 = 50%), positive affect (SMD 0.22, 95% CI 0.11 to 0.33; 13 studies, 4880 participants; I2 = 75%), and psychological quality of life (SMD 0.11, 95% CI 0.06 to 0.16; 19 studies, 18,034 participants; I2 = 42%). There was also evidence that smoking cessation was not associated with a reduction in social quality of life, with the confidence interval incorporating the possibility of a small improvement (SMD 0.03, 95% CI 0.00 to 0.06; 9 studies, 14,673 participants; I2 = 0%). The incidence of new mixed anxiety and depression was lower in people who stopped smoking compared with those who continued (OR 0.76, 95% CI 0.66 to 0.86; 3 studies, 8685 participants; I2 = 57%), as was the incidence of anxiety disorder (OR 0.61, 95% CI 0.34 to 1.12; 2 studies, 2293 participants; I2 = 46%). We deemed it inappropriate to present a pooled estimate for the incidence of new cases of clinical depression, as there was high statistical heterogeneity (I2 = 87%). Authors' Conclusions: Taken together, these data provide evidence that mental health does not worsen as a result of quitting smoking, and very low‐ to moderate‐certainty evidence that smoking cessation is associated with small to moderate improvements in mental health. These improvements are seen in both unselected samples and in subpopulations, including people diagnosed with mental health conditions. Additional studies that use more advanced methods to overcome time‐varying confounding would strengthen the evidence in this area.

BackgroundSmoking rates are significantly higher in people with mental health problems, compared to those without. Negative attitudes towards smoking cessation are widespread in inpatient settings towards patients with severe and enduring mental illness. It is not clear if the same attitudes operate in psychological services towards people with common mental illness. We aimed to understand the concerns and views that patients, therapists, and smoking cessation practitioners may have about integrating smoking cessation treatment into psychological treatment for common mental illness and how these concerns may be overcome.MethodsThematic analysis of 23 in-depth interviews. Interviews took place in Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT) and smoking cessation services in England. Participants were 11 psychological wellbeing practitioners (PWPs), six IAPT patients with common mental illness, and six smoking cessation advisors.OutcomesNone.FindingsIAPT patients reported psychological benefits from smoking, but also described smoking as a form of therapeutic self-harm. PWPs seem positive towards smoking cessation treatment for people with common mental illness. IAPT PWPs and patients accept evidence that smoking tobacco may harm mental health, and quitting might benefit mental health. PWPs report expertise in helping people with common mental illness to make behavioural changes in the face of mood disturbances and poor motivation. IAPT appears to be a natural environment for smoking cessation intervention. PWPs felt confident to offer smoking cessation treatments to IAPT patients, but thought that a reduction in caseload was required to deliver smoking cessation support in an already pressed service.

Aims To investigate whether smokers prescribed varenicline had lower risks of serious ill-health during the 4 years following treatment compared with those prescribed nicotine replacement therapy (NRT). Design Observational cohort study of electronic medical records. Setting A total of 370 UK general practices sampled from the Clinical Practice Research Datalink. Participants A total of 126 718 patients aged 18 and over who were issued smoking cessation prescriptions between 1 September 2006 and 31 March 2014. Measurements Our primary outcome was all-cause mortality within 2 years of first prescription as indicated by linked Office of National Statistics data. Our secondary outcomes were cause-specific mortality, all-cause, cause-specific hospitalization, primary care diagnosis of myocardial infarction or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), body mass index and attendance rate to primary care within 2 years of first prescription. Risk differences and 95% confidence intervals were estimated by multivariable adjusted regression and propensity score matched regression. We used instrumental variable analysis to overcome residual confounding. Findings People prescribed varenicline were healthier at baseline than those prescribed NRT in almost all characteristics, highlighting the potential for residual confounding. Our instrumental variable analysis results found that people prescribed varenicline had a similar risk of mortality at 2 years [risk difference per 100 patients treated = 0.67, 95% confidence interval (CI) = -0.11 to 1.46)] to those prescribed NRT, and there were similar rates of all-cause hospitalization, incident primary-care diagnoses of myocardial infarction and COPD. People prescribed varenicline subsequently attended primary care less frequently. Conclusions Smokers prescribed varenicline in primary care in the United Kingdom do not appear to be less likely to die, be hospitalized or experience a myocardial infarction or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease during the following 2 years compared with smokers prescribed nicotine replacement therapy, but they gain more weight and attend primary care less frequently.

SUMMARY The purpose of this study was to determine whether SEPs would improve the predictive power of VEPs for the prognosis of asphyxiated infants. 57 term infants had SEPs and VEPs recorded during the first three days of life, during the first week and at follow-up visits. All survivors have been followed for 18 to 24 months. 34 had a normal outcome, 12 had severe neurological sequelae and 11 died. The SEPs had both high sensitivity (96 per cent) and negative predictive power (97 per cent); normal SEPs virtually guaranteed normal outcome. The VEPs had both a specificity and positive predictive power of 100 per cent; abnormal VEPs guaranteed abnormal outcome. Both together had a higher predictive power than either alone. The combination of VEPs and SEPs yields a powerful means of prognostication for term asphyxiated infants; the results suggest that both be included in the assessment of this population. Le devenir fut normal dans 34 cas, il y eu 12 cas de sequelles neurologiques lourdes et 11 deces. Les PES presenternt a la fois une sensibiliteelevee (96 pour cent) et une valeur predictive negative (97 pour cent); un PES normal etait pratiquement la garantie d'un devenir normal. Bei 57 reif geborenen Kindern wurden in den ersten drei Lebenstagen, in der ersten Wochen und bei Kontrolluntersuchungen SEPs und VEPs abgeleitet. Alle Uberlebenden wurden uber 18 bis 24 Monate nachuntersucht. 34 waren gesund, 12 hatten schwere ne'urologische Folgeerscheinungen und 11 starben. Die SEPs hatten eine hohe Sensitivitat (96 Prozent) und eine negative prognostische Aussagekraft (97 Prozent); normale SEPs garantierten sozusagen eine normale Entwicklung. Die VEPs hatten eine Spezifitat und eine positive prognostische Aussagekraft von 100 Prozent; abnorme VEPs garantierten eine abnorme Entwicklung. A 57 ninos a termino se les registro el SEP y el VEP durante los tres primeros dias de vida, durante la primera semana y en las visitas siguientes. Todos los supervivientes habian sido seguidos durante 18 a 24 meses. 34 habian seguido un curso normal, 12 tenian secuelas neurologicas graves y 11 murieron. El SEP tenia al mismo tiempo una alta sensibilidad (96 por ciento) y una capacidad predictiva negativa (97 por ciento); un SEP normal virtualmente garantizaba un curso normal. El VEP tenia una especificidad y una capacidad predictiva positiva del 100 por ciento; un VEP anormal garantizaba un curso anormal. Ambos conjuntamente tenian una capacidad predictiva superior a cada uno por separado. La combinacion de VEP y SEP constituye un poderoso medio de pronostico en los lactantes con asfixia; los resultados sugieren que ambos deben ser incluidos en la evalucion de este tipo de poblacion.

The treatment of bentonite clay sols with the salts of amines and aminoalcohols containing not more than 6 carbon atoms gives gels of hydrophilic organic ammonium bentonites. The gels, e.g. 3 wt.-% methylammonium bentonite, ethylammonium bentonite and triethanolammonium bentonite in water, have plastic rheology and high yield values which depend on the nature of the organic substituents. Use of these organic derivatives of bentonite offers a means of gelling aqueous systems alternative to the use of the purified montmorillonite clays.

– Minnow trapping was used to determine the distribution and abundance of two small, benthic species of fish, common bullies (Gobiomorphus cotidianus) and koaro (Galaxias brevipinnis), in five oligotrophic lakes varying in both turbidity and the extent of water-level variation. Koaro were 5–20 times more abundant in the large turbid lakes than in the clear ones, indicating that turbidity may reduce the extent of salmonid predation on koaro. However, the scarcity of koaro in the clear lakes was related mainly to the prevalence of brown trout (Salmo trutta) compared with rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) as the former were more piscivorous and had a stronger inverse relationship with koaro. Common bullies were more abundant at sites 20 m or more away from the shoreline, and at depths of 9–12 m irrespective of season, year and turbidity level. However, the overall abundance of bullies was reduced by 70–90% in the turbid lakes. As bullies are relatively insensitive to the direct effects of increased turbidity, indirect effects such as reductions in macrophytes from reduced water clarity or smothering of benthic habitats by settled solids are thought to influence their abundance in the lakes affected by glacial turbidity. There was no relationship between the extent of water-level fluctuation and the abundance of koaro or common bullies in the lakes, but the depth distribution of bullies was shallowest in the lake with the least water-level fluctuation and was deepest in the lake with the greatest water-level fluctuation.

Juvenile (12-152 g) shortfinned eels Anguilla australis and longfinned eels A. dieffenbachii caught in New Zealand streams were fed squid mantle Nototodarus spp. 4 days per week in laboratory experiments. A linear multiple regression equation showed the amount of food eaten (0-2.7% w day -1 ) explained 77.7% of the variation in specific growth rates ( - 0.60 to +1.07% w day -1 ) among individual eels, while previous growth rates, water temperature (10.0-20.6°C), and eel weight (12-152 g) explained a further 5.6, 1.4 and 0.8%, respectively. Growth in length ranged from -0.3 to +0.9 mm day - 1 . Eels which were starved and then given high rations grew substantially faster than expected. Once growth rates were adjusted for differences in ration and other factors, there were no significant differences in growth rates between species or individual fish. Growth of shortfinned eels fed maximum rations of commercial eel food depended on fish size and water temperatures and ceased below 9.0° C. Growth rates in the wild were substantially less than the maximum possible, after seasonal changes in water temperatures were taken into account, indicating that food supplies and not low water temperatures were controlling growth rates in the wild.

Quinuclidines with a 3-biaryl substituent are a new class of potent, orally active squalene synthase (SQS) inhibitors. Variants around these rigid structures indicate key structural requirements for cationic SQS inhibitors. Thus the lower in vitro potency found for quinuclidines bearing 3-substituents, which did not overlay the biphenyl group of 3-(biphenyl-4-yl)-3-hydroxyquinuclidine (2) (IC50 = 16 nM, rat microsomal SQS), implied a directional requirement for the 3-substituent. Similarly, the lower potency of the 3-terphenyl analogue 6 (IC50 = 370 nM) indicated size constraints for this substituent. In compounds with a linking group between the quinuclidine and biphenyl ring, linking groups of lower lipophilicity were less well tolerated (e.g., 17, CH2CH2, IC50 = 5 nM vs 19, NHCO, IC50 = 1.2 μM). Replacement of the distal phenyl ring of 2 with a more polar pyridine heterocycle caused a reduction in in vitro potency. Field desorption - mass spectrometry (FD-MS) was evaluated as a tool for characterisation of the complex mixtures of compounds typical of synthetic lubricants. The lubricants were initially screened using field ionisation, then tested samples were subjected to field desorption. Results are presented for various formulations for an ester, an ester-synthetic oil mixture, polyisobutylenes, PAO additives, and a fully formulated oil.

Field-desorption mass spectrometry has been used to characterize polystyrene oligomers of molecular weight up to 15 000 Da. The technique shows good agreement with molecular weight data calculated using vapour-phase osmometry and gel-permeation chromatography but in addition provides much more detailed information in terms of oligomer distribution and the nature of end groups present in the oligomers.

The 1H NMR laboratory- and rotating-frame (LF,RF) spin-lattice relaxation (SLR) behaviour in solid polyethylenes is reviewed in light of the two region spin diffusion coupled model. Highly crystalline high-density materials show single T1 values indicative of the fast diffusion limit whilst RFSLR is close to the slow diffusion limit, allowing direct determination of the dimensions of the crystalline and disordered regions. The LFSLR and RFSLR of the HDPE's suggest the existence of an interfacial material which the SLR behaviour includes as part of the crystalline region in contrast to XRD and DSC. 13C CPMAS measurements of 1H RFSLR in a LLDPE provide an additional insight into this problem. The 1H RFSLR is best represented by a superposition of two exponentials, measured by either 1H or 13C NMR. The 1H RFSLR, measured at different chemical shifts in the 13C NMR spectrum, provides direct evidence of the interfacial material. The possible use of spin-locking at angles other than 90° in the rotating frame to scale the spin diffusion rates is reviewed and its possible utility for LLDPE materials explored.

This article is a preliminary attempt to consider the spatial consequences of business organisation segmentation in the Australian economy. The first section outlines a framework that can be employed in an analysis of business organisation segmentation. The second section applies this framework in the context of the Australian economy. This section is in three parts. First, it is shown that conventional sectoral data can be used to approximate business organisation segmentation. Second, the labour market consequences of this empirical exercise are documented. Finally, the spatial consequences of the exercise are shown by way of a series of maps.

A female infant was born at term with congenital anomalies and a deletion of the short arm of chromosome 5. The anomalies included thymic dysplasia and lymphocyte-depleted nodes of the type seen in combined immune deficiency; atrial and ventricular septal defects, pulmonary valve atresia, and anomalous pulmonary-bronchial communication through the lungs; and shortness of forearms with syndactyly of fingers. A review indicates that the association of cardiac lesions, thymic dysplasia, oligosyndactyly and deletion of chromosome 5p is unique.

Fifteen amino acids were evaluated for antioxidant activity in a linoleate emulsion oxidized by hemoglobin. Cysteine was the only amino acid with significant antioxidant activity, which was as great as butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA), butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT), or e-tocopherol. Ten proteins containing free or latent sulfhydryl groups were evaluated for antioxidant activity in both native and reduced states. Native proteins, containing few or no measurable sulfhydryl groups, had little or no antioxidant activity. Proteins treated with NaBH4 had greatly increased sulfhydryl groups and antioxidant activity. Treatment of reduced proteins or cysteine with iodoacetic acid (IAA) eliminated both sulfhydryl groups and antioxidant activity. Cysteine and reduced bovine serum albumin had optimum antioxidant activity at pH 8.6.

SUMMARY Controlled drop (CDA) and conventional applications of difenzoquat to pot-grown Avena fatua were compared. With the recommended surfactant (0.5% v/v Agral), very low volume CDA was less effective than conventional spray application. However, addition of extra Agral or various blends of paraffinic oil with Agral and the surfactants Burtemul A2 or Burtemul P2 improved the effects of the CDA treatments. When difenzoquat was absent the additives were inactive against A. fatua. They had little direct effect on wheat and barley and did not substantially increase the phytotoxicity of difenzoquat to these crops. Oil/surfactant mixtures were less viscous than high concentrations of Agral, and so easier to spray. In a pot experiment, smaller (150 μm diameter) drops of difenzoquat solution were more active against A. fatua than larger (200 μm-300 μm) drops. Reduction of the spray volume within the range 40 litres/ha to 5 litres/ha also reduced phytotoxicity. An oil/surfactant additive improved the activity of all difenzoquat CDA treatments. There was slightly more effect at the lowest spray volume but interactions between additive and application treatments were not statistically significant. When simulated rain treatments were applied 2 h or 5 h after spraying, difenzoquat controlled drop application was much less phytotoxic than a conventional 150 litres/ha treatment. However, addition of an oil/surfactant mixture markedly improved the performance of CDA. When rain was withheld for 24 h the additive had relatively less effect. In the field an oil/surfactant mixture improved control of A. fatua by difenzoquat with both conventional and controlled drop treatments. The additive did not increase injury to the wheat crop. The oil/surfactant mixtures markedly improved the spreading and wetting properties of sprays. This reduced localised contact injury, which, it is suggested, improved uptake and translocation of difenzoquat.

Various amino acids, selected for their potential antioxidant activity, were, covalently attached to 6-hydroxy-2,5,7,8-tetramethylchroman-2-carboxylic acid (Trolox-C), a lower homolog of vitamin E that has great antioxidant effectiveness. The resulting Troloxylamino acids (T-AA) had greater antioxidant effectiveness than Trolox-C in a linoleate emulsion system oxidized by hemoglobin. Troloxyl-tryptophan-methyl ester and Troloxyl-methionine-methyl ester were the most effective T-AA evaluated in the linoleate emulsion. However, butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA), butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA), butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) and α-tocopherol were more antioxidant than any T-AA in the emulsion system. In a Schaal oven test at 45 C. Trolox-C was by by far the most effective antioxidant evaluated in corn oil. BHT and Troloxylcysteine had significant antioxidant activity in corn oil, but no other T-AA was antioxidant in corn oil. In butter oil, Trolox-C again had the highest antioxidant activity, and BHA and BHT were also highly antioxidant. All t-AA had antioxidant activity in butter oil, with Troloxyl-methioninc and Troloxyl-cysteine having the grcatest antioxidant effectiveness. The T-AA of highest antioxidant activity were hydrolyzed by chymotrypsin and/or trypsin, in vitro.
