Secondary contact of recently diverged species may have several outcomes, ranging from rampant hybridization to reinforced reproductive isolation. In plants, selfing tolerance and disjunct reproductive phenology may lead to reproductive isolation at contact zones. However, they may also evolve under both allopatric or parapatric frameworks and originate from adaptive and/or neutral forces. Inferring the historical demography of diverging taxa is thus a crucial step to identify factors that may have led to putative reproductive isolation. We explored various competing demographypotheses to account for the rapid divergence of a fir species complex (Abies flinckii-A. religiosa) distributed in "sky-islands" across central Mexico (i.e., along the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt; TMVB). Despite co-occurring in two independent sympatric regions (west and centre), these taxa rarely interbreed because of disjunct reproductive phenologies. We genotyped 1147 single nucleotide polymorphisms, generated by GBS (genotyping by sequencing), across 23 populations, and compared multiple scenarios based on the geological history of the TMVB. The best-fitting model revealed one of the most rapid and complete speciation cases for a conifer species-pair, dating back to ~1.2 million years ago. Coupled with the lack of support for stepwise colonization, our coalescent inferences point to an early cessation of interspecific gene flow under parapatric speciation; ancestral gene flow during divergence was asymmetrical (mostly from western firs into A. religiosa) and exclusive to the most ancient (i.e., central) contact zone. Factors promoting rapid reproductive isolation should be explored in other slowly evolving species complexes as they may account for the large tropical and subtropical diversity.

With more than 200 species, the genus Agave is one of the most interesting and complex groups of plants in the world, considering for instance its great diversity and adaptations. The adaptations include the production of a single, massive inflorescence (the largest among plants) where after growing for many years, sometimes more than 30, the rosette dies shortly afterward, and the remarkable coevolution with their main pollinators, nectarivorous bats, in particular of the genus Leptonycteris. The physiological adaptations of Agave species include a photosynthetic metabolism that allows efficient use of water and a large degree of succulence, helping to store water and resources for their massive flowering event. Ecologically, the agaves are keystone species on which numerous animal species depend for their subsistence due to the large amounts of pollen and nectar they produce, that support many pollinators, including bats, perching birds, hummingbirds, moths, and bees. Moreover, in many regions of Mexico and in the southwestern United States, agaves are dominant species. We describe the contributions of H. S. Gentry to the understanding of agaves and review recent advances on the study of the ecology and evolution of the genus. We analyze the present and inferred past distribution patterns of different species in the genus, describing differences in their climatic niche and adaptations to dry conditions. We interpret these patterns using molecular clock data and phylogenetic analyses and information of their coevolving pollinators and from phylogeographic, morphological, and ecological studies and discuss the prospects for their future conservation and management.

PREMISE Past climate fluctuations during the Holocene and Pleistocene shaped the distribution of several plant species in temperate areas over the world. Wild maize, commonly known as teosinte, is a good system to evaluate the effects of historical climate fluctuations on genetic diversity due to its wide distribution in Mexico with contrasting environmental conditions. We explored the influence of contemporary factors and historical environmental shifts on genetic diversity, including present and three historical periods using neutral markers. METHODS We used 22 nuclear microsatellite loci to examine the genetic diversity of 14 populations of Zea mays subsp. parviglumis and 15 populations of Zea mays subsp. mexicana (527 individuals total). We implemented genetic structure analyses to evaluate genetic differentiation between and within subspecies. We applied coalescent-based demographic analysis and species distribution modeling to evaluate the effects of historical environmental shifts. RESULTS We found 355 alleles in total for the two subspecies and variable levels of diversity in each (Z. mays subsp. parviglumis expected heterozygosity HE = 0.3646-0.7699; Z. mays subsp. mexicana HE = 0.5885-0.7671). We detected significant genetic structure among populations (DEST = 0.4332) with significant heterozygote deficiency (FIS = 0.1796), and variable selfing rates (sg2 = 0.0-0.3090). The Bayesian assignment analysis differentiated four genetic groups. Demographic and species distribution modeling analysis suggested that environmental shifts were influential in the amount of genetic diversity. CONCLUSIONS Our analyses suggest that the current genetic diversity in teosinte is shaped by factors such as local adaptation and genetic isolation, along with historical environmental fluctuations.

Premise Domestication usually involves local adaptation to environmental conditions. Cucurbita species are a promising model for studying these processes. Cucurbita moschata is the third major crop in the genus because of its economic value and because it displays high landrace diversity, but research about its genetic diversity, population structure, and phylogeography is limited. We aimed at understanding how geography and elevation shape the distribution of genetic diversity in C. moschata landraces in Mexico. Methods We sampled fruits from 24 localities throughout Mexico. We assessed 11 nuclear microsatellite loci, one mtDNA region, and three cpDNA regions but found no variation in cpDNA. We explored genetic structure with cluster analysis, and phylogeographic relationships with haplotype network analysis. Results Mitochondrial genetic diversity was high, and nuclear genetic differentiation among localities was intermediate compared to other domesticated Cucurbita. We found high levels of inbreeding. We recovered two mitochondrial lineages: highland (associated with the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt) and lowland. Nuclear microsatellites show that localities from the Yucatan Peninsula constitute a well-differentiated group. Conclusions Mexico is an area of high diversity for C. moschata, and these landraces represent important plant genetic resources. In Mexico this species is characterized by divergence processes linked to an elevational gradient, which could be related to adaptation and may be of value for applications in agriculture. The Isthmus of Tehuantepec may be a partial barrier to gene flow. Morphological variation, agricultural management, and cultural differences may be related to this pattern of genetic structure, but further studies are needed.

Variation in rates of molecular evolution (heterotachy) is a common phenomenon among plants. Although multiple theoretical models have been proposed, fundamental questions remain regarding the combined effects of ecological and morphological traits on rate heterogeneity. Here, we used tree ferns to explore the correlation between rates of molecular evolution in chloroplast DNA sequences and several morphological and environmental factors within a Bayesian framework. We revealed direct and indirect effects of body size, biological productivity, and temperature on substitution rates, where smaller tree ferns living in warmer and less productive environments tend to have faster rates of molecular evolution. In addition, we found that variation in the ratio of nonsynonymous to synonymous substitution rates (dN/dS) in the chloroplast rbcL gene was significantly correlated with ecological and morphological variables. Heterotachy in tree ferns may be influenced by effective population size associated with variation in body size and productivity. Macroevolutionary hypotheses should go beyond explaining heterotachy in terms of mutation rates and instead, should integrate population-level factors to better understand the processes affecting the tempo of evolution at the molecular level.

Aim The history of Agave lechuguilla, a characteristic and dominant plant of the Chihuahuan Desert, was reconstructed in order to determine the importance of the Neogene orogenic uplift and the Quaternary glacial–interglacial climatic changes on the genetic patterns of a native Chihuahuan Desert species. Location Chihuahuan Desert, Mexico and United States. Methods Chloroplast DNA data from A. lechuguilla were analysed to describe levels of genetic diversity and structure and to infer the species’ demographic history, using traditional methods and approximate Bayesian computation (ABC). The time of divergence of the different haplogroups was estimated with a Bayesian approach. In addition, ecological niche modelling was used to identify possible refugia. Results Molecular dating analyses showed that A. lechuguilla originated 4.46 Ma and later differentiated into four haplogroups. The average chloroplast genetic diversity was low (Hd, 0.24), with high levels of genetic differentiation (GST, 0.780). Demographic analysis, niche modelling and ABC indicated a recent expansion from at least five glacial refugia located south of the species’ current distribution. Main conclusion Agave lechuguilla originated in the Neogene, and the glacial–interglacial events of the Pleistocene resulted in the expansion and contraction of its range, playing an important role in its intraspecific diversification. These contraction–expansion events are consistent with biogeographical regions previously identified in the Chihuahuan Desert.

Premise of the study Is there an association between bioclimatic variables and genetic variation within species? This question can be approached by a detailed analysis of population genetics parameters along environmental gradients in recently originated species (so genetic drift does not further obscure the patterns). The genus Agave, with more than 200 recent species encompassing a diversity of morphologies and distributional patterns, is an adequate system for such analyses. We studied Agave striata, a widely distributed species from the Chihuahuan Desert, with a distinctive iteroparous reproductive ecology and two recognized subspecies with clear morphological differences. We used population genetic analyses along with bioclimatic studies to understand the effect of environment on the genetic variation and differentiation of this species. Methods We analyzed six populations of the subspecies A. striata subsp. striata, with a southern distribution, and six populations of A. striata subsp. falcata, with a northern distribution, using 48 ISSR loci and a total of 541 individuals (averaging 45 individuals per population). We assessed correlations between population genetics parameters (the levels of genetic variation and differentiation) and the bioclimatic variables of each population. We modeled each subspecies distribution and used linear correlations and multifactorial analysis of variance. Key results Genetic variation (measured as expected heterozygosity) increased at higher latitudes. Higher levels of genetic variation in populations were associated with a higher variation in environmental temperature and lower precipitation. Stronger population differentiation was associated with wetter and more variable precipitation in the southern distribution of the species. The two subspecies have genetic differences, which coincide with their climatic differences and potential distributions. Conclusions Differences in genetic variation among populations and the genetic differentiation between A. striata subsp. striata and A. striata subsp. falcata is correlated with differences in environmental climatic variables along their distribution. We found two distinct gene pools that suggest active differentiation and perhaps incipient speciation. The detected association between genetic variation and environment variables indicates that climatic variables are playing an important role in the differentiation of A. striata.

PREMISE OF THE STUDY: Land-plant plastid genomes have only rarely undergone signifi cant changes in gene content and order. Thus, discovery of additional examples adds power to tests for causes of such genome-scale structural changes. METHODS: Using next-generation sequence data, we assembled the plastid genome of saguaro cactus and probed the nuclear genome for transferred plastid genes and functionally related nuclear genes. We combined these results with available data across Cactaceae and seed plants more broadly to infer the history of gene loss and to assess the strength of phylogenetic association between gene loss and loss of the inverted repeat (IR). KEY RESULTS: The saguaro plastid genome is the smallest known for an obligately photosynthetic angiosperm (~113 kb), having lost the IR and plastid ndh genes. This loss supports a statistically strong association across seed plants between the loss of ndh genes and the loss of the IR. Many nonplastid copies of plastid ndh genes were found in the nuclear genome, but none had intact reading frames; nor did three related nuclear-encoded subunits. However, nuclear pgr5, which functions in a partially redundant pathway, was intact. CONCLUSIONS: The existence of an alternative pathway redundant with the function of the plastid NADH dehydrogenase-like complex (NDH) complex may permit loss of the plastid ndh gene suite in photoautotrophs like saguaro. Loss of these genes may be a recurring mechanism for overall plastid genome size reduction, especially in combination with loss of the IR.

AIM: We investigated changes in distribution of cloud forests during the last 130 kyr, and tested whether these changes explain the spatial patterns of genetic diversity of the tree fern Alsophila firma (Cyatheaceae), a species restricted to this habitat. LOCATION: Mexican cloud forests. METHODS: We sampled 204 individuals from 16 localities. Genetic data consisted of DNA sequences for five chloroplast microsatellites and one nuclear gene. We used distribution modelling to predict the historical distribution of cloud forests during the last glacial period, using two palaeoclimate models: the Model for Interdisciplinary Research on Climate (MIROC) and the Community Climate System Model (CCSM). We tested the correlation between temporal cloud forest stability and genetic diversity and used an approximate Bayesian computation (ABC) framework to test two plausible demographic scenarios. RESULTS: The range fluctuations observed for cloud forests during the last 130 kyr are key factors affecting the distribution of genetic variation in A. firma. Increased genetic diversity in areas with high temporal environmental suitability is probably the result of increased population sizes and higher interpopulation connectivity. In accordance with the expansion of cloud forests predicted by CCSM, the genetic data supported the scenario of a population expansion occurring c. 110 ka, followed by population divergence c. 20 ka. However, population dynamics involving expansion of suitable microclimates could reconcile the stability of cloud forests predicted by MIROC and the observed genetic patterns. MAIN CONCLUSIONS: The predicted changes in the distribution of cloud forests were congruent with the population genetics of A. firma. However, the choice of palaeoclimate model has a substantial impact on the inferences drawn from the observed genetic and demographic patterns. The use of alternative palaeoclimate hypotheses and biome modelling can provide a common analytical framework for evaluating the historical cohesiveness of forest communities.

PREMISE OF THE STUDY Although species adapted to grow in unusual soils contribute importantly to regional diversity, the microevolutionary processes responsible for that diversity remain to be understood. We aimed to answer this question by analyzing which processes are responsible for the genetic differentiation in Fouquieria shrevei (Fouquieriaceae), a species confined to gypsum soils of northern Mexico. METHODS We analyzed sequence variation in three chloroplast intergenic spacers from five populations. KEY RESULTS Total genetic diversity was high (Hd = 0.743). Genetic differentiation was high (FST = 0.651), as most haplotypes were unique to individual populations, and three populations had only one haplotype. Haplotypes were more similar in nearby populations, resulting in a phylogeographic structure (i.e., GST = 0.850 was significantly lower than NST = 0.930) and a significant Mantel test (P = 0.04). Tajima's D (-0.019, not significant) indicates that effective population size has remained constant. CONCLUSIONS We conclude that genetic drift has been intense and gene flow low in differentiating populations that follow an island-like pattern of gypsum deposits of the deserts of North America. The interaction between these forces could promote speciation events that in turn would increase regional diversity and may explain the high number of narrow endemics associated with soil restrictions.

Aim Our aim was to analyse the temporal dynamics of areas of endemism of Bursera species (Burseraceae), a dominant element of the Mexican tropical dry forest, between the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) and the present day. We aimed to identify stable core sectors that have held permanent populations of endemic species. Location Mexican dry forest. Methods We modelled the geographical distributions of 81 species of Bursera and identified their areas of endemism at the LGM and at present. For each area of endemism, changes in time, species composition and distribution were analysed, and a spatially explicit temporal hypothesis was formulated. Results Three areas of endemism supported by geographically congruent elements were identified: the Central Mexican Pacific Coast, Western Balsas, and Eastern Balsas–Tehuacan/Cuicatlan–Tehuantepec. Within them we identified stable core sectors (refugia). Main conclusions The areas of endemism identified represent distinct evolutionary biotic components of the Mexican dry forest. Their stable core sectors may facilitate phylogeographical predictions at the level of species or species assemblages. The framework adopted allows us to formulate spatially explicit temporal hypotheses about biotic processes, based exclusively on geographical data.

Antagonistic interactions are frequently observed among bacteria in the environment and result in complex networks, which could promote co‐existence, and therefore promote biodiversity. We analysed interactions of aquatic bacteria isolated by their ability to grow in Pseudomonas isolation agar from Churince, Cuatro Cienegas, Mexico. In the resulting network, highly antagonistic and highly sensitive strains could be distinguished, forming a largely hierarchical structure. Most of the highly antagonistic strains belonged to the genus Pseudomonas. The network was sender‐determined, which means that the antagonist strains had a larger influence on its structure than the sensitive ones. Very few interactions were necessary to connect all strains, implying that the network was ‘small world’. The network was highly nested, having a core of highly interacting strains, with which the less antagonistic or highly sensitive interact. A probabilistic model was built, which captured most features of the network. Biological interpretation of the model implied a state in which many different antagonistic mechanisms were present, and most strains were resistant to them. Our work shows that strains of Pseudomonas from the water column at Cuatro Cienegas have the potential to interact antagonistically with many closely related strains and that these interactions are usually not reciprocal.

International audience; It is still an open question as to whether genome size (GS) variation is shaped by natural selection. One approach to address this question is a population-level survey that assesses both the variation in GS and the relationship of GS to ecological variants. We assessed GS in Zea mays, a species that includes the cultivated crop, maize, and its closest wild relatives, the teosintes. We measured GS in five plants of each of 22 maize landraces and 21 teosinte populations from Mexico sampled from parallel altitudinal gradients. GS was significantly smaller in landraces than in teosintes, but the largest component of GS variation was among landraces and among populations. In maize, GS correlated negatively with altitude; more generally, the best GS predictors were linked to geography. By contrast, GS variation in teosintes was best explained by temperature and precipitation. Overall, our results further document the size flexibility of the Zea genome, but also point to a drastic shift in patterns of GS variation since domestication. We argue that such patterns may reflect the indirect action of selection on GS, through a multiplicity of phenotypes and life-history traits.

 Premise of the study: The poinsettia ( Euphorbia pulcherrima ) is the world’s most economically important potted plant, but despite its preeminence it is not clear which wild populations are ancestral to the varieties cultivated around the world. Tradition holds that the U.S. envoy to Mexico J. R. Poinsett collected the progenitors of the over 300 varieties in global cultivation on an 1828 excursion to northern Guerrero State, Mexico. It is unknown whether the contemporary cultivars are descended from plants from Guerrero or whether germplasm from other parts of poinsettia’s 2000 km long distribution entered into cultivation during the nearly 200 yr of subsequent poinsettia horticulture.  Methods: To identify the wild populations that likely gave rise to the cultivars and test this historical account, we sequenced plastid and nuclear DNA regions and modeled poinsettia’s potential distribution.  Key results: The combination of nuclear and plastid haplotypes characterizing cultivars was found only in northern Guerrero. Distribution modeling indicated that suitable habitat conditions for wild poinsettias are present in this area, consistent with their likely wild status.  Conclusions: Our data pinpoint the area of northern Guerrero as the cultivated poinsettia’s probable ancestral region, congruent with the traditional account attributing the original collections to Poinsett. Abundant genetic variation likely offers raw material for improving the many shortcomings of cultivars, including vulnerability to cold, stem breakage, and pathogens such as Pythium and Phytophthora . However, genetic differences between populations make conservation of all of poinsettia’s diversity diffi cult.

The evolutionary history and ecological differentiation of the genus Exiguobacterium was characterized within natural communities from the Cuatro Cienegas Basin, Mexico. Exiguobacterium comprises both halophilic and alkaliphilic bacteria that are abundant among the aquatic systems of the Cuatro Cienegas Basin. We obtained complete sequences of the 16srRNA gene and partial sequences of four housekeeping genes (citC, rpoB, recA and hsp70) in 183 Exiguobacterium isolates retrieved from distinct aquatic systems. We defined three main phylogroups that are closely related to marine and thermophilic species of the genus. These phylogroups were neither specific to a given aquatic system nor to a particular salinity. Phylogenetic reconstruction indicated the presence of several small clusters within the phylogroups. These clusters consisted of isolates predominantly retrieved from sediment or water. Unifrac and AdaptML analyses confirmed this observation, pointing towards a clear pattern of differentiation linked to either sediment or water habitats. Our results are in line with the concept that niche differentiation is one of the main factors shaping prokaryotic populations and leading to evolutionary divergence.

• Mesoamerican arid biomes epitomize neotropical rich and complex biodiversity. To document some of the macroevolutionary processes underlying the vast species richness of Mesoamerican seasonally dry tropical forests (SDTFs), and to evaluate specific predictions about the age, geographical structure and niche conservatism of SDTF-centered woody plant lineages, the diversification of Bursera is reconstructed. • Using a nearly complete Bursera species-level phylogeny from nuclear and plastid genomic markers, we estimate divergence times, test for phylogenetic and temporal diversification heterogeneity, test for geographical structure, and reconstruct habitat shifts. • Bursera became differentiated in the earliest Eocene, but diversified during independent early Miocene consecutive radiations that took place in SDTFs. The late Miocene average age of Bursera species, the presence of phylogenetic geographical structure, and its strong conservatism to SDTFs conform to expectations derived from South American SDTF-centered lineages. • The diversification of Bursera suggests that Mesoamerican SDTF richness derives from high speciation from the Miocene onwards uncoupled from habitat shifts, during a period of enhanced aridity resulting mainly from global cooling and regional rain shadows.

We unite genetic data with a robust test of niche divergence to test the hypothesis that patterns of gene flow between two lineages of the nine-banded armadillo are influenced by their climatic niches. We collected Geographical Information System (GIS) data on climate using locality information from 111 individuals from two lineages that had associated genetic material. We tested whether niches of these lineages were more conserved or divergent than the background environments of their geographic ranges and found evidence for niche conservatism on two axes and no evidence for divergence on any axis. To address the role of niche similarity in gene flow, we genotyped the 111 individuals at five microsatellite loci and tested whether admixed individuals tended to be located in parts of multidimensional environmental space (E-space) shared between the two lineages. We observed an asymmetrical pattern of overlap, in which the West lineage's E-space was almost completely included inside East lineage's E-space. Genetic admixture levels were significantly higher in the West lineage and, for both lineages, in shared portions of E-space. This suggests that niche similarity can facilitate gene flow among disjunct groups with moderate-to-good dispersal capabilities, contrasting with the prevailing view of niche conservatism as a diversifying force.

 Premise of the study : Cactaceae is one of the most charismatic plant families because of the extreme succulence and outstanding diversity of growth forms of its members. Although cacti are conspicuous elements of arid ecosystems in the New World and are model systems for ecological and anatomical studies, the high morphological convergence and scarcity of phenotypic synapomorphies make the evolutionary relationships and trends among lineages diffi cult to understand.  Methods : We performed phylogenetic analyses implementing parsimony ratchet and likelihood methods, using a concatenated matrix with 6148 bp of plastid and nuclear markers ( trnK/matK , matK , trnL-trnF , rpl16 , and ppc ). We included 224 species representing approximately 85% of the family ’ s genera. Likelihood methods were used to perform an ancestral character reconstruction within Cactoideae, the richest subfamily in terms of morphological diversity and species number, to evaluate possible growth form evolutionary trends.  Key results : Our phylogenetic results support previous studies showing the paraphyly of subfamily Pereskioideae and the monophyly of subfamilies Opuntioideae and Cactoideae. After the early divergence of Blossfeldia, Cactoideae splits into two clades: Cacteae, including North American globose and barrel-shaped members, and core Cactoideae, including the largest diversity of growth forms distributed throughout the American continent. Para- or polyphyly is persistent in different parts of the phylogeny. Main Cactoideae clades were found to have different ancestral growth forms, and convergence toward globose, arborescent, or columnar forms occurred in different lineages.  Conclusions : Our study enabled us to provide a detailed hypothesis of relationships among cacti lineages and represents the most complete general phylogenetic framework available to understand evolutionary trends within Cactaceae.

Analysis of fine scale genetic structure in continuous populations of outcrossing plant species has traditionally been limited by the availability of sufficient markers. We used a set of 468 SNPs to characterize fine-scale genetic structure within and between two dense stands of the wild ancestor of maize, teosinte (Zea mays ssp. parviglumis). Our analyses confirmed that teosinte is highly outcrossing and showed little population structure over short distances. We found that the two populations were clearly genetically differentiated, although the actual level of differentiation was low. Spatial autocorrelation of relatedness was observed within both sites but was somewhat stronger in one of the populations. Using principal component analysis, we found evidence for significant local differentiation in the population with stronger spatial autocorrelation. This differentiation was associated with pronounced shifts in the first two principal components along the field. These shifts corresponded to changes in allele frequencies, potentially due to local topographical features. There was little evidence for selection at individual loci as a contributing factor to differentiation. Our results demonstrate that significant local differentiation may, but need not, co-occur with spatial autocorrelation of relatedness. The present study represents one of the most detailed analyses of local genetic structure to date and provides a benchmark for future studies dealing with fine scale patterns of genetic diversity in natural plant populations.

The genus Abies has a complex history in southern Mexico and Guatemala. In this region, four closely related species, Abies flinckii, A. guatemalensis, A. hickelii, and A. religiosa, are distributed in fragmented and isolated montane populations. Range-wide genetic variation was investigated across species using cytoplasmic DNA markers with contrasted inheritance. Variation at two maternally inherited mitochondrial DNA markers was low. All species shared two of the nine mitotypes detected, while the remaining seven mitochondrial DNA types were restricted to a few isolated stands. Mitochondrial genetic differentiation across taxa was high (GST = 0.933), it was not related to the taxonomic identity (AMOVA; P > 0.05) of the populations, and it was not phylogeographically structured (GST ≈ NST). In contrast, variation at three paternally inherited chloroplast DNA microsatellites was high. Chloroplast genetic differentiation was lower (GST = 0.402; RST = 0.547) than for mitochondrial DNA, but it was significantly related to taxonomy (AMOVA; P < 0.001), and exhibited a significant phylogeographical structure (GST < RST). Different analyses of population structure indicated that A. flinckii was the most divergent taxon, while the remaining three species formed a relatively homogeneous group. However, a small number of the populations of these three taxa, all located at the limits of their respective ranges or in the Transverse Volcanic Belt, diverged from this main cluster. These trends suggest that the Mesoamerican Abies share a recent common ancestor and that their divergence and speciation is mainly driven by genetic drift and isolation during the warm interglacial periods.

SUMMARY 1. The effects of phosphorus enrichment and grazing snails on a benthic microbial community that builds stromatolic oncolites were examined in an experiment at Rio Mesquites, Cuatro Cienegas, Mexico. Chemical analyses of stream water samples indicated that overall atomic ratios of total nitrogen (N) to total phosphorus (P) were approximately 110, indicating a strong potential for P-limitation of microbial growth. 2. Phosphorus enrichment involved addition of 5 lmol Na2HPO4 L )1 to streamside microcosms receiving intermittent inputs of stream water while grazer manipulation involved removal of the dominant grazer, the snail Mexithauma quadripaludium. After 7 weeks, we examined responses in organic matter content, C : N : P ratios, metabolism (P removal, primary production, dark respiration, and calcification), and microbial commu- nity structure using molecular fingerprinting of 16S rRNA genes. 3. Manipulation of snails did not affect response variables measured in these treatments (organic matter, C : P ratio, P removal rate). However, P enrichment significantly decreased the C : P and N : P ratios of surficial materials in the oncolites (organic matter content was unchanged), increased net and gross photosynthesis (oxygen consumption in the dark was unchanged), increased rates of calcification, and increased diatoms relative to cyanobacteria. Heterotrophic Eubacteria and Archaea were only modestly affected. Thus, our results indicate weak grazing effects but strong impacts of P in this benthic system. 4. We hypothesise that a state of severe P-limitation is imposed on autotrophic production in this food web due, at least in part, to co-precipitation of phosphate during calcite deposition. This produces severe P-limitation of the benthic algae and cyanobacteria, resulting in high C : P ratio of microbial mats relative to the biomass of photoautotrophs (phytoplankton, terrestrial foliage) in other ecosystems. In turn, this high C : P ratio is likely to generate severe stoichiometric constraints on the herbivores, thus limiting their populations and resulting in weak overall grazing impacts.

We used phylogenetic and population genetics approaches to evaluate the importance of the evolutionary forces on shaping the genetic structure of Rhizobium gallicum and related species. We analysed 54 strains from several populations distributed in the Northern Hemisphere, using nucleotide sequences of three ‘core’ chromosomal genes ( rrs , glnII and atpD ) and two ‘auxiliary’ symbiotic genes ( nifH and nodB ) to elucidate the biogeographic history of the species and symbiotic ecotypes (biovarieties) within species. The analyses revealed that strains classified as Rhizobium mongolense and Rhizobium yanglingense belong to the chromosomal evolutionary lineage of R. gallicum and harbour symbiotic genes corresponding to a new biovar; we propose their reclassification as R . gallicum bv. orientale . The comparison of the chromosomal and symbiotic genes revealed evidence of lateral transfer of symbiotic information within and across species. Genetic differentiation analyses based on the chromosomal protein-coding genes revealed a biogeographic pattern with three main populations, whereas the 16S rDNA sequences did not resolve that biogeographic pattern. Both the phylogenetic and population genetic analyses showed evidence of recombination at the rrs locus. We discuss our results in the light of the contrasting views of bacterial species expressed by microbial taxonomist and evolutionary biologists.

We studied a community of Agave species that coexist in the Metztitlán Canyon in Central Mexico. During 2001, 2002, and 2003, we analyzed floral traits and rosette allometry in five species belonging to the subgenus Littaea: A. celsii albicans, A. xylonacantha, A. difformis, A. striata, and Agave sp.; and observed floral visitors for each species. We report the first evidence of bat visitation in the subgenus Littaea and find that bats (Leptonycteris curasoae, Choeronycteris mexicana, and Glossophaga sp.) are the primary pollinators in four species. Honeybees, hummingbirds, bumblebees and hawkmoths were also common visitors. We propose that the presence of diurnal pollinators may increase the reproductive success of the plant when offering pollinator services additional to the coadapted pollinator. We also found evidence of selection pressures toward semelparity because pollinators are selecting for taller inflorescences in three of the five species. There is phenological complementarity in this community because the flowering periods of the five species span the entire year, although there are some periods when pairs of species overlap. Additionally, we found evidence for character displacement in rosette sizes and separation of spatial and temporal resource use in pollinator composition among species.

Summary • This study is aimed to understand the role of life-history traits in determining the genetic structure of populations. We used Erythroxylum havanense, a distylous shrub with synchronous and massive patterns of flowering and fruiting. We suggest that the high concentration of ephemeral resources produced by mass flowering satiates both pollinators and frugivores, restricting gene flow and leading to genetic differentiation among populations. • Using random amplified polymorphic DNAs as genetic markers, we estimated genetic diversity and structure statistics to quantify the amount and distribution of genetic variation within and among five populations from the Pacific coast of Mexico. • High levels of genetic variation within populations and significant differentiation among populations located very near to each other were found. Furthermore, spatial autocorrelation analysis indicated the presence of significant genetic structure at short spatial distances. • We suggest that by influencing the foraging behavior of pollinators and frugivores, mass flowering may produce the observed patterns of genetic structure, while small differences in flowering or fruiting phenology could further reinforce the isolation of nearby populations.

Floral characteristics such as morphology and flower color have been interpreted as adaptive traits that evolved through selective pressures generated by pollinators. Differences among populations in the expression of floral characters could result from natural selection for their adaptive value to local conditions. We describe the patterns of variation of flower morphology, color, and fecundity of Agave lechuguilla in 11 populations along a latitudinal gradient encompassing the whole range of the species in the Chihuahuan desert. We found a latitudinal pattern in flower shape and color. Flowers tended to be shorter, more open, and colorful toward the northern part of the gradient. We also recorded flower visitation, discriminating between pollinators and floral robbers. The main pollinators seems to be nocturnal hawk moths (Hyles lineata) and diurnal large bees (Bombus pennsylvanicus and Xylocopa californica). In all populations large bees were the most abundant potential pollinators. However, the abundance of the potential pollinators varied along the gradient. We observed no bat visits along the gradient. The number of visits by all potential pollinators decreased significantly with latitude as did fruit set.

Populations of Abies in southern Mexico and Guatemala (A. flinckii, A. guatemalensis, A. hickeli, and A. religiosa) have a patchy distribution. This pattern is particularly clear in A. guatemalensis. Genetic diversity within populations, measured by average heterozygosity at 16 isozyme loci, is lower than the range reported for most conifers (mean H(o) ranging from 0.069 in A. guatemalensis to 0.113 in A. flinckii), while differentiation among populations is higher than that observed in most conifer species studied (θ = F(st) ranging from 0.073 in A. hickeli to 0.271 in A. flinckii). Estimated levels of gene flow are low (ranging from 0.672 in A. flinckii to 3.17 in A. hickeli). Populations in most cases had an excess of homozygosity over that expected under Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium, suggesting some inbreeding (F(is) ranging from 0.074 in A. flinckii to 0.235 in A. guatemalensis). A significant relationship between gene flow and geographic distance was observed in A. religiosa, but not in the other three taxa studied. The patterns of genetic variation appear to have been influenced by the distributions and histories of these species. Paleoclimatic evidence suggests that the ranges of these species retreated upwards during the Pleistocene glaciation and became fragmented during the warming period that followed. The populations could have passed through genetic bottlenecks that reduced genetic variation and led to interpopulation differentiation.

Summary 1 To assess the effect of annual environmental variability on the long-term population dynamics of the invasive woody perennial Prosopis glandulosa var. torreyana (honey mesquite), we employed elasticity analyses of annual, mean and periodic matrix models. Growth, survival and reproduction were recorded for 1306 individuals in a 1-ha plot over a 4-year period. The volume of each individual was estimated, and transition matrices with nine size classes were constructed. Standard matrix analysis was performed, and the relative importance of individual life-cycle components to changes in the finite rate of population increase (λ) was determined. 2 Periodic matrix analysis projected a 29% annual increase in population size (λ= 1.29), while annual projection λ-values varied between 0.99 and 1.44. For both methods, elasticity of seedling recruitment was always very low in all 4 years, and the highest elasticities were generally associated with permanence in the same size class. 3 Periodic and annual projections predicted similar elasticity patterns, with the relative contribution to a change in λ of different demographic processes changing between ‘good’ and ‘bad’ years. However, annual matrices identified two bad years, with fecundity and growth elasticity decreasing relative to survival, whereas periodic analysis identified only one such year, and elasticity changes were seen only in fecundity and survival.

Long-lived perennials are a species-rich, ecologically important component of the North American deserts, yet we know little about their genetic structure, information important for their conservation. Agave victoriae-reginae is an endemic of the Chihuahuan Desert of northern Mexico that is endangered by collection for the ornamental trade. We examined levels and patterns of variation at ten polymorphic allozyme loci in ten populations representing the range of the species. Levels of genetic variation (mean H(e)= 0.335) and differentiation (mean F(ST) = 0.236) were high. Phenetic clustering suggested the existence of at least three distinct groups of populations. If this pattern of variation is representative of other long-lived desert perennials, it may explain the species richness of this group and will pose a real challenge to gene conservation efforts.

Populations of Prosopis glandulosa var. torreyana in the Chihuahuan desert have a fixed dimorphic system of nectar production in which half the individuals produce nectar (are nectarful) and the other half are nectarless. We analyzed the impact of nectar production on different estimates of fitness, comparing nectarful against nectarless individuals in size, mating system, seed traits, and fruit set in a 1-ha scrubland. Of the reproductive individuals (358), 46% were nectarful and 54% were nectarless. Neither tree size nor flowering phenology differed between nectar morphs. Fixation indices (F) for both progeny (F = -0.2) and adults (F = -0.45) were negative, and high heterozygosities were found in adults and progeny (H = 0.45). No differences were found between nectar morphs for F, H, and single (t(s) = 1.1) and multilocus (t(m) = 1.03) outcrossing rates. Controlled pollinations showed differences between selfing and control treatments with no differences between nectar morphs. Nectarless individuals produced significantly more pollen grains than did nectar producers, but all other measured floral traits showed no differences. Nectarful trees were visited by pollinators 21 times more often and had a significantly higher overall fruit set than did nectarless trees. No differences between nectar morphs in seed mass or in percentage seed germination were found, but heavier seeds tended to have higher heterozygosities. Both morphs had similar success as females, but nectarless trees had ∼7% higher male function. We discuss three possible scenarios for the evolution of the fixed dimorphism in nectar production, two involving unstable phases (substitution of one morph by the other, and evolution towards dioecy) and one stable scenario (maintenance of the dimorphic system).

We conducted a multilocus enzyme electrophoresis (MLEE) study to assess the genetic structure of the nitrogen-fixing bacteria Rhizobium etli bv. phaseoli. We analysed the genetic variation at 10 enzyme-encoding chromosomal loci of 482 isolates from root nodules of Phaseolus vulgaris and P. coccineus bean plants. The isolates were obtained from six traditionally managed agricultural plots in two localities in the State of Puebla, in Central Mexico. The total mean genetic diversity (HE) for the six plots was 0.531. Among the 482 isolates collected, 126 distinctive multilocus genotypes (electrophoretic types [Ets]) were obtained, and approximately half of the isolates are represented by five widespread ETs. A significant degree of genetic differentiation among the six plots (GST = 0.072) and between the two localities (GST = 0.022) was detected. The main part of the observed variability (70%) was found among the isolates within the plants. The cluster analysis revealed two deeply diverging lineages, separated at a genetic distance of 0.7. When a multilocus linkage disequilibrium analysis was performed at different hierarchical levels, we found significant linkage disequilibrium, but when the analysis was performed for the genotypes within the two diverging lineages, we found evidence of recombination. We propose for R. etli bv. phaseoli a reticulated and epidemic genetic structure, in which few genotypes increase in frequency to produce numerically dominant clones, and genetic exchange occurs mainly among genotypes within each lineage.

Isozymatic variation and phylogenetic relationships among extant henequen (Agave fourcroydes) germplasm and wild populations of its ancestor A. angustifolia in the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico were analyzed. Analysis of three isozyme systems using starch gel electrophoresis indicated that while A. angustifolia populations have relatively high levels of variation, within each henequen cultivar all individuals were identical. This result corresponds to previous ethnobotanical and morphological analyses, which indicated severe loss of genetic variation of this domesticated plant as a consequence of the promotion by means of asexual propagation of only one cultivar since the middle of the last century. The three extant cultivars of henequen were distinct from each other. Two of them, Sac Ki (SK) and Yaax Ki (YK), could be matched within the progenitor, but Kitam Ki (KK) has a MDH electrophenotype not found in any of the plants growing inside the Yucatan Peninsula, but found in some A. angustifolia plants growing in the Mexican states of Oaxaca and Veracruz. A parsimony analysis of the morphological data indicated two lineages: that of SK and YK, cultivated cordage plants selected for stronger and longer fibers, whose sister group is the Tropical subdeciduous forest ecotype (SF), and that of all the other wild populations, which also included KK, the cultivated textile plants selected for finer fibers and nearly extinct in Yucatan. These results support the hypothesis of the yucatecan origin of SK and YK from the SF ecotype, as well as the hypothesis of a recent introduction of KK to the Yucatan Peninsula in a domestication trend that probably included also Chelem White (its cultivation being abandoned later).

An experimental approach, manually pollinating all the flowers of individual plants, was used to measure the effect of pollen limitation on female fecundity of the hummingbird-pollinated perennial shrub Echeveria gibbiflora in the ecological preserve of Pedregal de San Angel around Mexico City, Mexico. Eleven randomly selected plants were manually over-pollinated in all their flowers and another 11 were left to be freely visited by natural pollinators. Manually pollinated plants produced significantly more fruit and seeds than control plants (1.38 and 1.74 times, respectively). There was no change in average mass of fruits. Considering individual fruit production per plant sampled three times in one season, decreases in fruit mass and average seeds per fruit were observed within the same reproductive season for both treatments. For the manually pollinated plants, from the start to the end of the reproductive season, seed set decreased 55.9%; while in control plants seed set decreased 33.4% in the same period. For both treatments, average fruit mass decreased 26%. Vegetative growth was not significantly different between control and experimental plants but hand-pollinated plants showed a smaller reproduction probability for the following year. It is concluded that female fecundity in E. gibbiflora is limited by pollen early in the reproductive season and by resources in the middle and the end of the season.

We explored the patterns of intra- and interpopulation variation in flower morphology of the red mangrove, Rhizophora mangle. Twelve populations in Mexico were studied: five from the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea, and seven from the Pacific Coast. Six metric floral attributes were measured from a sample of 1370 flowers. Significant differences among populations were found for all six attributes. Because floral attributes were all correlated, scores derived from principal factor analysis were used to describe the variation in flower morphology. Two factors explained essentially all of the variance in flower morphology. Corolla and calyx size had a strong effect on factor 1, while gynoecium size had the higher effect on factor 2. Nested analyses of variance on the scores from both factors revealed significant differences among coasts, among populations within coasts, and among plants within populations. Nonetheless, this variation cannot be explained as a result of clinal variation, as indicated by a series of regression analyses. Cluster analysis (UPGMA) showed that a population from the Pacific coast was clustered together with those of the Atlantic, and the arrangement of populations within each coast showed no evident geographical pattern. We propose that frequent events of extinction and recolonization by a few individuals, followed by selfing, may produce differentiation among populations of red mangrove.

We evaluated the influence of the reproductive ecology on low recruitment of sexually derived progeny observed in Opuntia rastrera Weber in the Southern Chihuahuan Desert, in two vegetation types. The flowers are diurnal, remaining open 9-10 hr. Pollen is released in the morning and at the same time the stigmas become receptive. Nectar is produced all day, but the production rate is higher at noon. The flowers are visited by insects, mainly solitary bees (Diadasia sp. and Lithurge sp.). Floral characteristics and the pollen/ovule ratio suggest that Opuntia rastrera is a facultative xenogamous species. Controlled pollinations indicate that it is not apomictic and pollinators are required to set fruit; it is also selfcompatible, but there is strong inbreeding depression for fruit set. However, we were unable to demonstrate differences in reproductive characters between the populations in both vegetation types. The average density of adults per hectare was one order of magnitude higher in the nopalera (Opuntia-dominated scrublands) than in the grassland. However, the average density of plants that originated from seeds was one order of magnitude lower in the nopalera. Opuntia rastrera produces abundant flowers, fruits, and seeds in both vegetation types in natural conditions. The low success in the recruitment of new genets cannot be ascribed to the reproductive ecology.

The population genetics and mating system of the understory tropical rain forest tree Psychotria faxlucens were studied at two plots in Los Tuxtlas, Veracruz, Mexico, on the Gulf of Mexico coast. This species is distylous and is pollinated by moths, mainly small hawkmoths. The seeds are dispersed by gravity and by frugivorous birds. Controlled pollinations indicate that the trees are self-incompatible and that intramorph pollinations have lower compatibilities than intermorph pollinations. The pollen: ovule ratio is high, suggesting obligate xenogamy. Using electrophoretic allozyme methods we found that eight out of 20 loci were polymorphic (P = 0.400), the observed heterozygosity (H) was 0.198, and the mean expected heterozygosity (H) was 0.495, both relatively high values compared with that reported for tropical trees. The genetic differentiation between the two plots is low, as shown by the heterogeneity in allele frequencies and the F., (mean F., seedlings = 0.031, mean F., adults = 0.026), although for some loci the plot differentiation is statistically significant. The studied populations are near Hardy-Weinberg proportions, both for seedlings (mean F = 0.128) and adults (mean F = 0.075). From the fixation rate, an indirect estimate of the outcrossing rate at equilibrium gave a mean of t = 0.898 for plot 1 and 0.685 for plot 2. Direct single loci and multiloci outcrossing rate estimates were generally not statistically different from 1.0.
