The global natural product-based industry is growing fast with the introduction of new phytochemicals and herbal extract products from different geographical regions. Swertia paniculata is a well-known plant with medicinal properties; however, the quality control for its major phytochemical constituents from the Himalayan geographical region is nevertheless reported. Therefore, the first objective of this investigation was to characterize and optimize the extraction process while the second objective was to validate a quantitative analytical method for chiratol from S. paniculata herbal extract. The chiratol was characterized with spectral analysis. The optimum extraction condition for the highest yield of metabolite was realized in chloroform as a solvent system under ultrasonication. The ultra-high performance liquid chromatography coupled with photodiode array detection method for analytical quantification was validated for specificity, linearity, limits of detection, limits of quantification, precision, repeatability, recovery, and robustness using Eclipse Plus C18 column (100 mm × 4.6 mm × 3.5 μm id). The gradient elution of water/acetonitrile as mobile phase was used at a flow rate of 0.5 ml/min. The recovery percentage was very satisfactory with values within specification. The robustness parameters showed no substantial influence of evaluated parameters by the Youden test. The developed method was ascertained to be appropriate for the proposed purpose.

This article presents an investigation report of the effects of temperature variation in the range of 300 to 480 K on electrical performance parameters of conventional dual‐material double‐gate tunnel field effect transistor (DMDG‐TFET) and dual‐material gate‐oxide‐stack double‐gate tunnel field effect transistor (DMGOSDG‐TFET). This report shows an analysis and comparison of the impacts of operating temperature variation on both the devices in terms of DC, analogue/RF, linearity and harmonic distortion parameters with the help of simulation results obtained using a numerical device simulator. It could be stated that DMGOSDG‐TFET is more insensitive with respect to temperature variation in terms of DC, analogue/RF and linearity performances as compared to conventional DMDG‐TFET. Moreover, in terms of harmonic distortion characteristics DMGOSDG‐TFET is found to be more stable with temperature variation as compared to DMDG‐TFET.

The rapid evolution of the flow cytometry field, currently allowing the measurement of 30-50 parameters per cell, has led to a marked increase in deep multivariate information. Manual gating is insufficient to extract all this information. Therefore, multivariate analysis (MVA) methods have been developed to extract information and efficiently analyze the high-density multicolour flow cytometry (MFC) data. To aid interpretation, MFC data are often logarithmically transformed before MVA. We studied the consequences of different transformations of flow cytometry data in datasets containing negative intensities caused by background subtractions and spreading error, as logarithmic transformation of negative data is impossible. Transformations such as logicle or hyperbolic arcsine transformations allow linearity around zero, whereas higher (positive and negative) intensities are logarithmically transformed. To define the linear range, a parameter (or cofactor) must be chosen. We show how the chosen transformation parameter has great impact on the MVA results. In some cases, peak splitting is observed, producing two distributions around zero in an actual homogeneous population. This may be misinterpreted as the presence of multiple cell populations. Moreover, when performing arbitrary transformation before MVA analysis, biologically relevant and statistically significant information might be missed. We present a new algorithm, Optimal Transformation for flow cytometry data (OTflow), which uses various statistical methods to optimally choose the parameter of the transformation and prevent artifacts such as peak splitting. Arbitrary or unconsidered transformation can lead to wrong conclusions for the MVA cluster methods, dimensionality reduction methods, and classification methods. We recommend transformation of flow cytometry data by using OTflow-defined parameters estimated per channel, in order to prevent peak splitting and other artifacts in the data.

Electrochemical techniques are commonly applied to micro total analysis system (μTAS) devices mainly due to its high sensitivity and miniaturization capacity. Among many electrochemical techniques, capacitively coupled contactless conductivity detection (C4 D) stands out for not requiring direct electrode-solution contact, avoiding several problems such as electrolysis, bubble formation, and metal degradation. Furthermore, the instrumentation required for C4 D measurements is compact, low cost, and easy to use, allowing in situ measurements to be performed even by nonspecialized personal. Contrarily, the production of metallic electrodes and microchannels adequate for C4 D measurements commonly requires specialized facilities and workers, increasing the costs of applying these methods. We propose alternatives to batch manufacture metallic electrodes and polymeric microchannels for C4 D analysis using more straightforward equipment and lower-cost materials. Three devices with different dielectric layer compositions and electrode sizes were tested and compared regarding their analytical performance. The constructed platforms have shown a reduction of more than 64% in cost when compared to traditional techniques and displayed good linearity (R2 ≥ 0.994), reproducibility (RSD ≤ 4.07%, n = 3), and limits of detection (≤0.26 mmol/L) when measuring standard NaCl samples. Therefore, the proposed methods were successfully validated and are available for further C4 D applications such as diagnosis of dry-eye syndrome.

Human insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-I) is the primary mediator of the effects of the growth hormone (GH). Therefore, it has been used as a biomarker to detect the abuse of GH in sports. The measurement of IGF-I relies on mass-based and immunological approaches to analysis. Among the mass-based analysis methods, liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) has a number of functional advantages. LC-MS measurements based on the quantification of IGF-I, according to trypsin digestion, are used in the most common method of analyzing doping. However, this method is time-consuming and subject to experimental variability. In this study, we optimized a rapid method for detecting IGF-I without the trypsin digestion step. This method of analysis uses an ultra-centrifugal filter and an LC-HRMS through narrow-range mass scan method. To verify the validity of this method, eight categories of validation testing were applied with the following results: linearity, R2 > 0.99; limit of detection, 15 ng/ml; limit of quantification, 20 ng/ml; accuracy, >99%; recovery rate, >95%; carryover

Summary Temperature dependence of plant respiratory O2‐consumption has been empirically described by the Arrhenius equation. The slope of the Arrhenius plot (which is proportional to activation energy) sometimes deviates from a constant value. We conducted kinetic model simulations of mitochondrial electron flow dynamics to clarify factors affecting the shape of the Arrhenius plot.We constructed a kinetic model of respiration in which competitive O2‐consumption by the cytochrome pathway (CP) and the alternative pathway (AP) were considered, and we used this model to describe the temperature dependence of respiratory O2‐consumption of Arabidopsis.The model indicated that the electron partitioning and activation energy differences between CP and AP were reflected in the slope and magnitude of the dependent variables of the Arrhenius plot. When the electron partitioning and activation energies of CP and AP were constant with temperature change, our model suggested that the Arrhenius plot would be almost linear. When the electron partitioning or activation energy of CP, or both, rapidly changed with temperature, the Arrhenius plot deviated from linearity, as reported in previous experimental studies.Our simulation analysis quantitatively linked the kinetic model parameters with physiological mechanisms underlying the instantaneous temperature dependence of plant respiration rate.

The paper deals with the seismic response analysis of nonlinear secondary oscillators. Bilinear, sliding and rocking single-degree-of-freedom dynamic systems are analysed as representative of a wide spectrum of secondary structures and non-structural components. In a first stage, the equations governing their full dynamic interaction with linear multi-degree-of-freedom primary structures are formulated, and then conveniently simplified using primary-secondary two-degree-of-freedom systems and dimensionless coefficients. In a second stage, the cascade approximation is applied, whereby the feedback action of the secondary oscillator on the primary structure is neglected. Owing to the piecewise linearity of the secondary systems being considered, efficient semi-analytical and step-by-step numerical solutions are presented. The semi-analytical solutions allow the direct evaluation of the seismic response under pulse-type ground excitations and are also used to validate step-by-step numerical schemes, which in turn can be used for general-type seismic excitations. In a third stage, a set of decoupling criteria are proposed for the pulse-type base excitations, identifying the conditions under which a cascade analysis is admissible from an engineering standpoint. Finally, the influence and relative dependencies between the input parameters of the ground motion and the primary-secondary assembly are quantified on the response of the secondary systems through nonlinear floor response spectra, and general trends are identified and discussed.

Citalopram (CIT) is a frequently used modern antidepressant that inhibits selectively serotonin reuptake in the brain. It has a chiral center in its structure and is used in therapy as both racemic mixture and pure enantiomer as its pharmacological effect is almost entirely associated with S-CIT. The aim of this study was the development of a simple and rapid capillary electrophoresis (CE) method for the separation and quantification of CIT enantiomers. To establish the optimum chiral selector, several native and derivatized, neutral, and ionized cyclodextrins (CDs) were examined at different pH levels. An experimental design strategy was adopted for method optimization; a fractional factorial design was applied for screening purposes to identify significant experimental factors followed by a face-centered central composite design used for optimization purposes. Computational modeling was used to obtain information on the interaction energy and the geometry of the complexes to aid in the understanding of chiral separation mechanism. The best results were obtained when using a 25-mM phosphate buffer at pH 7.0, 3-mM CM-β-CD as chiral selector, 17.5°C temperature, 15-kV voltage, and 50 mbar/s hydrodynamic injection. The separation time was fast, below 3 min, and the migration order was S-CIT followed by R-CIT. The analytical performance of the method was verified in terms of precision, linearity, accuracy, sensibility, and robustness, and the method was applied for the determination of CIT enantiomers from pharmaceutical preparations.

Two‐dimensional elastic full waveform inversion was applied to two lines extracted from a spiral three‐dimensional vertical seismic profile data acquired in an oilfield offshore, Abu Dhabi, in the United Arab Emirates. The lines were selected to be parallel and perpendicular to the plane defined by the deviated borehole. The purpose of the inversion was to derive high‐resolution elastic properties of the subsurface. After pre‐processing, the data were band‐pass filtered with a minimum frequency of 3.5 Hz and a maximum frequency of 30 Hz. A sequential inversion approach was used to mitigate non‐linearity. The pre‐processing of the data consisted in the removal of bad traces, followed by amplitude and phase corrections. High‐resolution P‐ and S‐wave velocity models that show good correlations with the available sonic logs were obtained. The results of the inversion suggest that the oilfield consists of a stack of layers with varying lithology, porosity and possibly fluid content.

For a given technique, the wage-rate of profit curve is linear in one-sector models. In multisector models, Wicksell effects appear and some paradoxes in capital theory are linked to the complex shape of the wage curve. We study the conditions ensuring the linearity of the curve for a bisector model and for models satisfying a specific rank condition.

PURPOSE The objective of this study was to characterize the Best Medical Canada microMOSFET detectors for their application in in vivo dosimetry for high-dose-rate brachytherapy (HDRBT) with 192 Ir. We also developed a mathematical model to correct dependencies under the measurement conditions of these detectors. METHODS We analyzed the linearity, reproducibility, and interdetector variability and studied the microMOSFET response dependence on temperature, source-detector distance, and angular orientation of the receptor with respect to the source. The correction model was applied to 19 measurements corresponding to five simulated treatments in a custom phantom specifically designed for this purpose. RESULTS The detectors (high bias applied in all measurements) showed excellent linearity up to 160 Gy. The response dependence on source-detector distance varied by (8.65 ± 0.06)% (k = 1) for distances between 1 and 7 cm, and the variation with temperature was (2.24 ± 0.05)% (k = 1) between 294 and 310 K. The response difference due to angular dependence can reach (10.3 ± 1.3)% (k = 1). For the set of measurements analyzed, regarding angular dependences, the mean difference between administered and measured doses was -4.17% (standard deviation of 3.4%); after application of the proposed correction model, the mean difference was -0.1% (standard deviation of 2.2%). For the treatments analyzed, the average difference between calculations and measures was 4.7% when only the calibration coefficient was used, but it is reduced to 0.9% when the correction model is applied. CONCLUSION Important response dependencies of microMOSFET detectors used for in vivo dosimetry in HDRBT treatments, especially the angular dependence, can be adequately characterized by a correction model that increases the accuracy of this system in clinical applications.

Background Flow cytometry is a powerful technique that provides information regarding cell properties. In this study, we evaluated the analytical performance of a new flow cytometer, the 10‐color BD FACSLyricTM, which could help doctors obtain reliable test results prior to clinical research. Methods We used SpheroTM Rainbow Calibration Particles and the SpheroTM Nano Fluorescent Particle Size Standard Kit to validate the fluorescence sensitivity and linearity. The Beckman Coulter IMMUNO‐TROL Cell was used as the quality control to evaluate the accuracy and reproducibility of surface markers detected by the flow cytometer. Furthermore, BD Calibrate APC Beads and CS&T Research Beads were applied to calculate the carry‐over contamination rate and assess the instrument stability. Results A linear regression equation between the molecules of equivalent soluble fluorochrome and fluorescence detection limit showed a good linear fit (R 2 > 0.99). The minimum bead size detected by side scatter was 0.22 μm. The coefficient of variation percentage of each fluorescence channel was below 2%, and the carry‐over contamination rate of the cytometer was under 0.2%. After running the BD FACSLyricTM cytometer continuously for 8 h, the median fluorescence index of particles remained close to that at the time of cytometer startup. Conclusions The 10‐color BD FACSLyricTM cytometer showed good performance in the evaluation performed in this study and may be trusted to provide accurate results for clinical research., The performance evaluation of the new instrument should be verified under laboratory conditions before the system can be used in other applications. Our performance evaluation serves as a supplement for the evaluation performed by the manufacture, especially for clinical laboratory users.

The famous Arrhenius equation is well suited to describing the temperature dependence of chemical reactions but has also been used for complicated biological processes. Here, we evaluate how well the simple Arrhenius equation predicts complex multi‐step biological processes, using frog and fruit fly embryogenesis as two canonical models. We find that the Arrhenius equation provides a good approximation for the temperature dependence of embryogenesis, even though individual developmental intervals scale differently with temperature. At low and high temperatures, however, we observed significant departures from idealized Arrhenius Law behavior. When we model multi‐step reactions of idealized chemical networks, we are unable to generate comparable deviations from linearity. In contrast, we find the two enzymes GAPDH and β‐galactosidase show non‐linearity in the Arrhenius plot similar to our observations of embryonic development. Thus, we find that complex embryonic development can be well approximated by the simple Arrhenius equation regardless of non‐uniform developmental scaling and propose that the observed departure from this law likely results more from non‐idealized individual steps rather than from the complexity of the system., Time‐lapse analysis of frog and fruit fly embryogenesis combined with mathematical modeling is performed to examine how well the simple Arrhenius equation predicts complex multi‐step biological processes.

PURPOSE To characterize the dosimetric features and limitations of the dynamic beam flattening (DBF) on the Halcyon 2.0 linear accelerator (Varian Medical Systems). METHODS A predefined multi-leaf collimator (MLC) sequence was introduced and used to flatten the 6 MV flattening filter free (FFF) beam on the Halcyon 2.0. Dosimetric characterizations of the flattened beams, including beam flatness, symmetry, percent depth dose (PDD), output factor and MU linearity, were investigated. Flatness and symmetry were obtained from profile measurements with both radiographic films (EDR2) and a two dimensional ion-chamber array (IC Profiler, Sun Nuclear Corporation). MU linearity, output factors, and PDDs were measured in a water tank with a CC13 ion chamber (Scanditronix Wellhofer, Nuremburg, Germany). In addition, the effect of the DBF sequence on 3D plan quality was evaluated by creating DBF plans for a 4-field box rectum and an AP/PA spine plan. Patient specific QA was performed on these plans. In the paper, a single‐slope analog‐to‐digital converter (ADC) for integrated CMOS image sensor applications with an improved technique of conversion has been proposed. The proposed hybrid‐mode ADC automatically uses one of the following conversion techniques: time based (i.e. PWM) or voltage based (i.e. single‐slope). During the ADC operation, the clock frequency and reference voltage are modified in order to reduce the conversion time and achieve the optimal linearity. Owing to this, the pixel using a photodiode working in the integration mode achieves a linear photoconversion characteristics (irradiance to digital number), and the conversion period, which is determined by the darkest parts of a scene, is reduced by an order of magnitude comparing with known ADC solutions. The proposed conversion technique has been validated with the ASIC prototype of a CMOS imager containing photosensors integrated with the ADCs. The ASIC was fabricated in standard 0.18 μm CMOS technology. A specialized measurement system has been used to optimize linearity in the hybrid‐mode conversion (integral nonlinearity below 2 LSB). The conversion period has been reduced 15 times compared with the standard technique. Measurements confirm functionality of the proposed approach, implemented within a small pixel area.

Isotropic chemical shifts measured by solution nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy offer extensive insights into protein structure and dynamics. Temperature dependences add a valuable dimension; notably, the temperature dependences of amide proton chemical shifts are valuable probes of hydrogen bonding, temperature‐dependent loss of structure, and exchange between distinct protein conformations. Accordingly, their uses include structural analysis of both folded and disordered proteins, and determination of the effects of mutations, binding, or solution conditions on protein energetics. Fundamentally, these temperature dependences result from changes in the local magnetic environments of nuclei, but correlations with global thermodynamic parameters measured via calorimetric methods have been observed. Although the temperature dependences of amide proton and nitrogen chemical shifts are often well approximated by a linear model, deviations from linearity are also observed and may be interpreted as evidence of fast exchange between distinct conformational states. Here, we describe computational methods, accessible via the Shift‐T web server, including an automated tracking algorithm that propagates initial (single temperature) 1H—15N cross peak assignments to spectra collected over a range of temperatures. Amide proton and nitrogen temperature coefficients (slopes determined by fitting chemical shift vs. temperature data to a linear model) are subsequently calculated. Also included are methods for the detection of systematic, statistically significant deviation from linearity (curvature) in the temperature dependences of amide proton chemical shifts. The use and utility of these methods are illustrated by example, and the Shift‐T web server is freely available at http://meieringlab.uwaterloo.ca/shiftt.

As derived by Max Planck in 1903 from dispersion theory, Beer's law has a fundamental limitation. The concentration dependence of absorbance can deviate from linearity, even in the absence of any interactions or instrumental nonlinearities. Integrated absorbance, not peak absorbance, depends linearly on concentration. The numerical integration of the absorbance leads to maximum deviations from linearity of less than 0.1 %. This deviation is a consequence of a sum rule that was derived from the Kramers‐Kronig relations at a time when the fundamental limitation of Beer's law was no longer mentioned in the literature. This sum rule also links concentration to (classical) oscillator strengths and thereby enables the use of dispersion analysis to determine the concentration directly from transmittance and reflectance measurements. Thus, concentration analysis of complex samples, such as layered and/or anisotropic materials, in which Beer's law cannot be applied, can be achieved using dispersion analysis., Absorbance at a particular spectral point does not necessarily depend linearly on the concentration. Based on electromagnetic theory, it can be demonstrated, however, that for the integrated absorbance, Beer's law still holds.

Purpose To present lessons learned from magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) quality control (QC) tests for low‐field MRI‐guided radiation therapy (MR‐IGRT) systems. Methods MRI QC programs were established for low‐field MRI‐60Co and MRI‐Linac systems. A retrospective analysis of MRI subsystem performance covered system commissioning, operations, maintenance, and quality control. Performance issues were classified into three groups: (a) Image noise and artifact; (b) Magnetic field homogeneity and linearity; and (c) System reliability and stability. Results Image noise and artifacts were attributed to room noise sources, unsatisfactory system cabling, and broken RF receiver coils. Gantry angle‐dependent magnetic field inhomogeneities were more prominent on the MRI‐Linac due to the high volume of steel shielding in the gantry. A novel, simple, sensitive method was developed for determining midodrine spectrofluorimetrically in both its raw pure form and its tablet form. This study is based on the native fluorescence of midodrine and discusses the optimum solvent used and the wavelength range. The presented method was then validated with respect to linearity, accuracy, precision, and limits of detection and quantitation. The constructed calibration curve showed a linear range of 0.1-2.0 μg/ml. The limit of detection and limit of quantitation values were 0.03 and 0.10 μg/ml respectively. Finally, content uniformity testing was applied according to the United States Pharmacopoeia by adapting the presented method.

Conversion to a filmless technique of physical performance testing is becoming a topic of much interest to researchers. We assessed the use of a computed radiography (CR) system with postprocessing software as an alternative tool for performing the three physical performance tests of an x‐ray tube. Collimator and beam alignment, focal spot size, and milliampere second (mAs) linearity, were performed using a CR system. Results were then compared with those obtained from a conventional screen‐film (SF) system. The distances of collimator misalignment measured by the SF system were decreased while peak tube voltage (kVp) was increased (mAs was fixed), whereas those measured by CR were independent of exposure level. The degrees of beam collimator misalignment measured by the CR system were not different from those measured by the SF system. The differences in focal spot dimensions measured by SF and CR systems were less than 4% for large and small focal spot size in both width and length. The mAs linearity evaluated by the SF system agreed with those evaluated by the dose measurement at 50 kVp and 4 mAs, as well as 55 kVp and 3.2 mAs, while the mAs linearity test using the CR system agreed with those using the dose measurement method for all exposure levels. In summary, a CR system could be utilized to assess the three physical performance tests of a single x‐ray tube, but required more time than an SF system. Medical physicists with image processing skills were needed to perform the analyses.

A new RP-HPLC method with a quick, sensitive and stable indication for the quantitative measurement of selexipag and its associated substances was developed and validated in the present study. In this new method, using the impurity-spiked solution, the chromatographic approach was optimized. Similarly, using the X-bridge phenyl column with isocratic elution of mobile phase containing acetonitrile and formic acid, selexipag and its impurities were separated. Recovery experiments obtained were satisfactory, and also the calibration graphs plotted for selexipag and its five impurities were found to be linear. The system validation parameters such as specificity, linearity, precision, accuracy and robustness were determined successfully. The obtained results indicated that the developed method was found to be useful for analyzing selexipag from its impurities. Further, using stress tests against acid, alkali, peroxide, reduction, thermal, hydrolysis and UV conditions, the present established method of HPLC was assessed and validated as per ICH Q2(R1) guidelines.

Quantitative susceptibility mapping (QSM) is a valuable magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) contrast mechanism that has demonstrated broad clinical applications. However, the image reconstruction of QSM is challenging due to its ill-posed dipole inversion process. In this study, a new deep learning method for QSM reconstruction, namely xQSM, was designed by introducing modified state-of-the-art octave convolutional layers into the U-net backbone. The xQSM method was compared with recentlyproposed U-net-based and conventional regularizationbased methods, using peak signal to noise ratio (PSNR), structural similarity (SSIM), and region-of-interest measurements. The results from a numerical phantom, a simulated human brain, four in vivo healthy human subjects, a multiple sclerosis patient, a glioblastoma patient, as well as a healthy mouse brain showed that the xQSM led to suppressed artifacts than the conventional methods, and enhanced susceptibility contrast, particularly in the ironrich deep grey matter region, than the original U-net, consistently. The xQSM method also substantially shortened the reconstruction time from minutes using conventional iterative methods to only a few seconds., 37 pages, 10 figures, 3 table

Rationale Direct analysis of chemicals on a surface using mass spectrometry (MS) is of great importance in forensics, food and drug safety, environmental monitoring, and defense. Solvent extraction-based surface analysis offers a convenient way of controlling the desorption conditions and applying internal standards. To date, it mainly relies on a separate electrospray process to nebulize and ionize the solvents. Here, we report a simple and stand-alone ionization system for the solvent extraction-based surface analysis without the need for high voltage, based on vibrating sharp-edge spray ionization (VSSI). Methods We modified the original VSSI device and developed a stand-alone, integrated surface sampling, and ionization system for MS analysis. By incorporating a micropipette-based solvent dispenser with the VSSI device, the new system performs solvent extraction and ionization, and still maintains a small footprint. Results We demonstrated a four order-of-magnitude linear response for glucose spotted on a glass surface with a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.1 pg/mm2 . We further characterized the performance of this method with a series of compounds and demonstrated a similar LOD to literature values obtained by desorption electrospray ionization. Finally, we applied this method to quantitatively measure the concentration of a pesticide ametryn on spinach surfaces. We demonstrated good linearity (R2 = 0.99) for ametryn with surface densities in the range of 8-800 pg/mm2 and an LOD of 9 pg/mm2 . Conclusions We have demonstrated a simple, effective, direct ambient-ionization method that is highly sensitive to molecules on a wide range of surfaces. The flexibility, small footprint, low cost, and voltage-free nature of this method make it an attractive technique for direct surface sample analysis using MS.

In this study, the change of electrochemical parameters during the gradual water accumulation of a polymer electrolyte fuel cell (PEFC) are estimated using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurements and an impedance model based on electrode theory during a two-step oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). EIS measurements were carried out in a 5 cm2 H2/O2 PEFC operated under a dead-ended configuration of the gas reactants and during gradual accumulation of water. Kramers-Kronig evaluation demonstrated that the EIS measurements comply with stability and linearity properties and the inductive loops featured at low frequencies are attributed to electrochemical mechanisms within the PEFC and not to instability during gradual water accumulation. The impedance model has been reported in a previous study and simulates inductive loops at low frequencies which are attributed to platinum oxide formation during the ORR. The estimated parameters obtained from this EIS-modelling analysis can provide an insight into the decrease in PEFC performance during flooding conditions. A further qualitative analysis considering the effect of long-term water accumulation on the oxygen-reduction charge transfer resistance is discussed. It is possible to have an insight into the physical mechanisms of the PEFC by combining different experimental techniques and fundamental theory in a complimentary manner.

The Fermi-Lowdin orbital self-interaction correction (FLO-SIC) methodology is applied to atoms and molecules from the standard G2-1 test set. For the first time FLO-SIC results for the GGA-type PBE functional are presented. In addition, examples where FLO-SIC like any proper SIC provides qualitative improvements compared to standard DFT functionals are discussed in detail: the dissociation limit for H2+ , the step-wise linearity behavior for fractional occupation, as well as the significant reduction of the error of static polarizabilities. Further, ionization potentials and enthalpies of formation obtained by means of the FLO-SIC DFT method are compared to other SIC variants and experimental values. The self-interaction correction gives significant improvements if used with the LDA functional but shows worse performance in case of enthalpies of formation if the PBE-GGA functional is used. The errors are analyzed and the importance of the overbinding of hydrogen is discussed. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

PURPOSE Photon counting arrays (PCAs), capable of measuring the spectral information of individual x-ray photons and recording that information digitally, provide a number of advantages compared to conventional, energy-integrating active matrix flat-panel imagers - such as reducing the undesirable effects of electronic readout noise and Swank noise. While contemporary PCAs are based on crystalline silicon, our group has been examining the use of polycrystalline silicon (poly-Si, a semiconductor material better-suited for the manufacture of large-area devices) for such arrays. In this study, a theoretical investigation of the front-end amplifiers of array pixels incorporating photon counting circuits is described - building upon circuit simulation techniques developed in a previous study. Results for amplifier circuit designs corresponding to prototype PCAs currently under development, as well as for hypothetical circuit designs identified in the study, are reported. In the simulations, performance metrics (such as signal gain, linearity of signal response, and energy resolution) as well as various measures of count rate are determined. METHODS The simulations employed various input energy distributions (i.e., a 72 kVp spectrum as well as monoenergetic x rays) in order to determine circuit performance. To make the results representative of the properties of poly-Si, the simulations incorporated transistor characteristics that were empirically obtained from test devices. Optimal operating conditions for the circuits were determined by applying criteria to the performance metrics and identifying which conditions minimized settling time. Once the optimal operating conditions were identified, trains of input pulses simulating x-ray flux were used to determine two measures of count rate corresponding to dead time losses of 10% and 30% (referred to as CR10 and CR30 , respectively). RESULTS The best-performing prototype amplifier design (implemented at a pixel pitch of 1 mm) exhibited CR10 and CR30 values (expressed in counts per second per pixel) of 8.4 and 21.6 kcps/pixel, respectively. A hypothetical amplifier design was derived by modifying transistor, resistor, and capacitor elements of the prototype amplifier designs. This hypothetical design (implemented at a pitch of 1 mm) exhibited CR10 and CR30 values of 154 and 381 kcps/pixel, respectively. When implemented at a pitch of 0.25 mm, the performance of that design increased to 210 and 491 kcps/pixel, respectively (corresponding to counts per second per unit area of 3.4 and 7.9 Mcps/mm2 ). CONCLUSIONS The simulation methodology described in this paper represents a useful tool for identifying promising designs for the amplifier component of photon counting arrays, as well as evaluating the analog signal and noise performance of those designs. The results obtained from the current study support the hypothesis that large-area, photon counting arrays based on poly-Si transistors can provide clinically useful count rates. Encouraged by these early results, further development of the methodology to assist in the identification and evaluation of even more promising designs, along with development and empirical characterization of prototype designs, is planned.

In this study we investigated the dose rate response characteristics of the Digital Megavolt Imager (DMI) detector, including panel saturation, linearity, and imager ghosting effects for flattening filter‐free (FFF) beams. The DMI detector dose rate response characteristics were measured as a function of dose rate on a Varian TrueBeam machine. Images were acquired at dose rates ranging from 400 to 1400 MU/min for 6XFFF and 400 to 2400 MU/min for 10XFFF. Line profiles and central portal doses derived from the images were analyzed and compared. The linearity was verified by acquiring images with incremental Monitor Unit (MU) ranging from 5 to 500 MU. Ghosting effects were studied at different dose rates. Finally, for validation, test plans with optimal fluence were created and measured with different dose rates. All test plans were analyzed with a Gamma criteria of 3%‐3 mm and 10% dose threshold. Our study showed that there was no panel saturation observed from the profile comparison even at the maximum dose rate of 2400 MU/min. The central portal doses showed a slight decrease (1.013–1.008 cGy/MU for 6XFFF, and 1.020–1.009 cGy/MU for 10XFFF) when dose rate increased (400–1400 MU/min for 6XFFF, and 400–2400 MU/min for 10XFFF). The linearity of the DMI detector response was better than 0.5% in the range of 20–500 MU for all energies. The residual image was extremely small and statistically undetectable. The Gamma index measured with the test plans decreased from 100% to 97.8% for 6XFFF when dose rate increased from 400 to 1400 MU/min. For 10XFFF, the Gamma index decreased from 99.9% to 91.5% when dose rate increased from 400 to 2400 MU/min. We concluded that the Portal Dosimetry system for the TrueBeam using DMI detector can be reliably used for IMRT and VMAT QA for FFF energies.

In this paper, a reconfigurable receiver front‐end for the frequency range of 800 MHz to 2.5 GHz is presented. The radio frequency front‐end is realized in wideband form with reconfigurable baseband filter. The proposed front‐end targets the GSM, WLAN, WCDMA, and GPS standards residing in the aimed frequency range. The necessary specifications for each individual standard have been revisited and recalculated. The interaction of the different standards and their interoperability has been thoroughly investigated and extra specifications derived for the multistandard receiver. The multistandard receiver has been designed, layouted, and simulated in RFCMOS 0.18‐μm process.

In this paper, fiber-optic sensors by different tapered lengths of silica optical fiber (SOF) coated with zinc oxide (ZnO) nanorods were fabricated and demonstrated to detect different concentrations of uric acid. The SOFs were tapered in the length of 1 cm, 3 cm, 5 cm, and 7 cm using flame brushing technique. ZnO nanorods were coated on the surface of the tapered SOFs for 24 hours using sol-gel immersion method. The sensing experiment was performed by dipping the SOF in the uric acid solution. One end of the SOF was connected to a light source and while the other end to an optical analyzer. The output of the sensor was analyzed for different uric acid concentration from 0 ppm to 500 ppm with the different tapered lengths of SOF sensors. The result shows that the sensor with tapered length of 7 cm had the highest sensitivity response of 0.0006 mV/ppm with linearity of 98.52%. In addition, all tapered size of sensor shows significant improvement of sensing performance with sensitivity consistently improved from 1 cm to 7 cm with good linearity as ZnO nanorods coated the tapered lengths. The detection limit was found to be at 0.2 ppm in the range of uric acid concentration.
