Background: Non-human primate (NHPs) conservation sites could be sites of exchange of pathogens involved in infectious diseases. It is important to assess the potential risks associated with this type of structure. The objective of this study was to carry out a risk assessment of the Primatology Centre housed in the Interdisciplinary Centre for Medical Research of Franceville (CIRMF)., Methods: A questionnaire was administered to the centre's staff to assess the risk associated with each workstation, followed by a review of the various pathogens identified in NHPs. The data were analysed using two diagrams: the Kiviat diagram and the Pareto diagram., Results: Based on our results, a variety of pathogens such as viruses, bacteria and parasites, potentially transmissible to humans, were described in the NHPs at the Primatology Centre of CIRMF. The position most exposed to zoonotic risks was that of animal handlers., Conclusion: The Primatology Centre of CIRMF is a potential transfer site for the transfer of zoonotic agents. Background: Liposomal local anaesthetic solutions may provide extended-duration analgesia postoperatively but have not been assessed following intra-peritoneal local infiltration in any species., Objectives: To evaluate two doses of 1.33% liposomal bupivacaine (LB) versus 0.75% bupivacaine HCL (BHCl) for analgesia following laparoscopic ovariectomy in mares., Study Design: Prospective cohort study., Methods: Fifteen healthy Quarter Horse mares (age 2-20 years) with normal bilateral ovarian palpation and appearance were enrolled. Horses were restrained in standing stocks and administered an α-2 agonist, butorphanol, and flunixin meglumine, followed by a variable rate infusion of sedation with α-2 agonists. Bilateral paralumbar fossa ovariectomies were performed. Treatment with either 30 ml 0.75% BHCl followed by 20 or 40 ml LB 13.3% (LB20 and LB40) volume expanded with saline to 80 ml total (n = 6/group) or 80 ml BHCl alone (n = 3, BCHL) was infused around incision sites and each mesovarium (LB or BHCl) prior to ovariectomy. Horses were monitored for 72 h by physical examination, algometry, and pain scoring (composite pain scale by Bussieres et al., Horse Grimace Scale). Abdominocentesis with peritoneal fluid analysis was performed at 72 h., Results: Analgesia achieved with all treatment protocols allowed completion of ovariectomy procedures. Pressure algometry scores were lower in BHCl-treated horses versus both LB groups overall. Pain scores were improved with LB-treated horses in a dose-dependent fashion (Horse Grimace Scale scores LB40 < LB20 < BHCL; composite pain scale scores LB40 < BHCL, LB20 < BHCL, BHCL, and LB20 did not differ). Peritoneal fluid total protein was lower in LB40 versus LB20 and BHCL horses. No complications from LB administration were appreciated., Main Limitations: Small patient sample size, lack of follow-up past 72 h or histopathology., Conclusions: Analgesia duration was extended and pain scores improved postoperatively with LB versus BHCl in a dose-dependent fashion. Further clinical evaluation of extended-duration local anaesthetics in horses for improved postoperative pain management is warranted., (© 2022 The Authors. Candida parapsilosis is a common cause of invasive candidiasis, especially in premature infants, even surpassing Candida albicans as the most frequently identified Candida species in some newborn intensive care units. Whereas many molecular tools are available to facilitate the study of C. albicans, relatively few have been developed for C. parapsilosis. In this study, we show that plasmids harbouring green, yellow and mCherry fluorescent protein sequences, previously developed for expression in C. albicans, can be used to construct fluorescent fusion proteins in C. parapsilosis by PCR-mediated gene modification. Further, the strategy can be used in clinical isolates of C. parapsilosis, which are typically prototrophic, because the plasmids include NAT1, a dominant selectable trait that confers resistance to the antibiotic nourseothricin. Overall, these tools will be useful to yeast researchers who require the ability to visualize C. parapsilosis directly, e.g. in in vitro and in vivo infection models. In addition, this strategy can be used to generate fluorescence in other C. parapsilosis clinical isolates and to tag sequences of interest for protein localization studies. Lastly, the ability to express up to three different fluorescent proteins will allow researchers to visualize and differentiate C. parapsilosis and/or C. albicans clinical isolates from each other in mixed infection models., (Copyright © 2015 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.)

Introduction: Because a focus on physiologic labor and birth has reemerged in recent years, care providers have the opportunity in the prenatal period to help women increase confidence in their ability to give birth without unnecessary interventions. However, most research has only examined support for women during labor. The purpose of this systematic review was to examine the research literature for information about prenatal care approaches that increase women's confidence for physiologic labor and birth and tools to measure that confidence., Methods: Studies were reviewed that explored any element of a pregnant woman's interaction with her prenatal care provider that helped build confidence in her ability to labor and give birth. Timing of interaction with pregnant women included during pregnancy, labor and birth, and the postpartum period. In addition, we looked for studies that developed a measure of women's confidence related to labor and birth. Outcome measures included confidence or similar concepts, descriptions of components of prenatal care contributing to maternal confidence for birth, and reliability and validity of tools measuring confidence., Results: The search of MEDLINE, CINAHL, PsycINFO, and Scopus databases provided a total of 893 citations. After removing duplicates and articles that did not meet inclusion criteria, 6 articles were included in the review. Three relate to women's confidence for labor during the prenatal period, and 3 describe tools to measure women's confidence for birth., Discussion: Research about enhancing women's confidence for labor and birth was limited to qualitative studies. Results suggest that women desire information during pregnancy and want to use that information to participate in care decisions in a relationship with a trusted provider. Further research is needed to develop interventions to help midwives and physicians enhance women's confidence in their ability to give birth and to develop a tool to measure confidence for use during prenatal care., (© 2014 by the American College of Nurse-Midwives.)

Transurethral needle ablation (TUNA) is an accepted and effective therapy for the treatment of lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) due to benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Prostiva (Medtronic, Shoreview, MN) is the newest-generation device, which includes a new needle design and radio frequency (RF) generator. This device creates temperatures of 120 degrees C and necrotic lesions in less than 2.5 min. Using previously described techniques, we analyzed dynamic, gadolinium-enhanced MRIs to characterize the ablative properties of the new Prostiva RF device. Ten men with LUTS due to BPH were treated with the standard Prostiva manufacturer-recommended protocol. The bladder neck and lateral lobes received treatment based on prostate volume and prostatic urethral length. Gadolinium-enhanced MRI sequences were obtained prior to and 1 week post-treatment. Analyze software (Mayo Clinic Biomedical Imaging Resource, Rochester, MN) was used to evaluate MRIs. New gadolinium defects were seen in all patients following Prostiva treatments. All lesions coalesced within the prostate. No defects were seen beyond the prostate, and the urethra was spared in all patients. The mean volume of necrosis was 7.56 cc, representing a mean of 11.28% of total prostate volume. Dynamic, gadolinium-enhanced MRIs demonstrate new vascular defects representing necrosis caused by Prostiva RF therapy of the prostate. The standard Prostiva RF protocol produces lesions that coalesce to create larger lesions in the bladder neck and lateral lobes. Compared to the TUNA Precision Plus device, the ablative lesions appear comparable while produced with a shorter burn time.

Background: We assessed whether recombinant human erythropoietin (rhEPO) enhances a rise in haemoglobin concentration in postpartum anaemia compared to intravenous iron alone., Design: Some 60 patients with haemoglobin values

Background: Effective screening programs have contributed to a decrease in the incidence of cervical squamous cell carcinomas but have had a limited sensitivity in the detection of adenocarcinoma precursor lesions. The aim of our study was to analyze cervical adenocarcinoma in greater detail: symptoms preceding the detection, the method of detection and the prevalence of human papillomavirus (HPV) with respect to age at diagnosis., Material and Methods: Clinical data were abstracted from the medical records of 82 women with pure invasive cervical adenocarcinomas. As diagnostic tools we used polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based single-strand conformation polymorphism (SSCP) and/or direct DNA sequencing for HPV detection., Results: Age at diagnosis predicting factors were HPV status, positive lymph nodes, histology and stage. HPV-negativity, lymph node metastases, advanced stage and poor differentiation were all associated with a high diagnostic age. In the multivariate analysis only HPV status was shown to have an independent impact on age at diagnosis, while stage showed only borderline significance. Twenty-three percent of the cancers were detected by screening and the remaining were due to different symptoms. Among the women considered, 93% had a normal Papanicolaou (Pap) smear 3 years before diagnosis and 60% within 1 year. There was no significant correlation between smoking, oral contraceptives and HPV-positivity., Conclusions: The absence of HPV was significantly associated with a high age at diagnosis. Pap screening had a limited effect in detecting adenocarcinoma at an early stage.

Aim: To compare the effects of preoperative treatment with recombinant human erythropoietin (EPO) and iron with iron only on hemoglobin levels (Hb) in anemic women prior to hysterectomy., Methods: The study was an open-labelled randomized parallel study. Fifteen women scheduled for hysterectomy due to uterine myoma were given oral iron and EPO (NeoRecormon) 4 weeks prior to surgery (group I) and 16 women were given oral iron only (group II)., Results: Group I showed a significantly greater increase in mean Hb during the pre-surgery study period compared with group II (p=0.007). Two weeks postoperatively, however, there was no significant difference in mean Hb between the two groups., Conclusion: We found that a significantly greater increase in Hb was achieved with iron in combination with EPO, although in most cases iron only seemed to be as efficacious as iron+EPO in correcting anemia in myoma patients pre-operatively.

We examined the function of floral traits associated with buzz pollination through studies of Rhexia virginica (Melastomataceae) in the Muskoka region of Ontario, Canada. Controlled pollinations demonstrated that the species is self-compatible, but dependent on insects for pollen transfer. Bumble bees made 82 and 90% of observed insect visits to R. virginica in 1996 and 1997, respectively, and effectively buzzed flowers. Buzz pollination did not appear to be highly "specialized" since various species of bumble bee were capable of pollination, and pollen transfer efficiency appeared to be relatively low. Experimental manipulations provided little support for the hypothesis that the yellow color of melastome anthers mimics abundant pollen, thereby deceiving pollinators to visit regardless of whether most pollen has been removed. Fruit set averaged 52.6% among populations, owing largely to infrequent pollinator visits and pollen limitation. Flowers of R. virginica were infertile after a single day of anthesis, but petals were subsequently maintained for 1-2 d and stamens underwent a color change from bright yellow to red. Second-day flowers may function to increase floral display size and hence fertility, without a concomitant increase in pollen discounting. Studies of bumble bee foraging behavior and correlates of seed set provided indirect support for this hypothesis.

Objective: The aim of this investigation was to study three groups of women presenting with possible HPV-infection with regard to HPV-types and cervical dysplasia., Methods: Eighty women were included. Eighteen of them were present partners to men with condylomas, 20 had clinical vulvar HPV-lesions and 42 were referred due to an abnormal PAP-smear. Samples for HPV-analysis by PCR-technique were taken from the vulva, the portio and the cervical canal. A universal HPV-primer as well as specific primers for HPV 6/11, 16, 18, 31, and 33 were utilized. PAP-smears were taken as well as biopsies from cervix/portio., Results: Seventy-eight percent had HPV-DNA identified. Sixty-seven percent of those with HPV 16 and/or 18 had dysplasia verified by histopathology and 50% of those with 31 and/or 33. Twenty of 21 women with dysplasia had HPV 16, 18, 31 and/or 33 identified. One woman with dysplasia was HPV-negative. Histopathologically verified CIN were diagnosed in all groups investigated. Women referred for suspicion of CIN significantly more often had HPV detected at the cervix/portio. HPV 6/11 was mostly found in women with condylomas. Apart from this the occurrence of the different HPV types were alike in the three groups., Conclusion: Infection with HPV is a process and the usefulness of different diagnostic methods seems to depend on when during the course of the disease they are used. HPV-findings in women with dysplasia were all associated with oncogenic virus-types. High-risk virus was often found simultaneously with low-risk virus indicating a covariation in the acquisition of the different HPV-types.

There are rewards for nurse administrators who challenge organizational norms and physician behaviors to support nurses. We found that the term verbal abuse had sparked anger and fear. The spark kindled interest and energy that we converted into a process to support staff nurses in their roles. As we enter the 1990s, the focus is on finding solutions to problems that concern nurses. The advocacy role of the nursing leader requires constant awareness of the nurses' situation within the health care environment and a sensitivity to their needs and rights as professionals. Dealing with the issue of verbal abuse demonstrated to the nursing staff our commitment and support.
