7. Canine and Human Dirofilariosis in the Rostov Region (Southern Russia)

Abstract

Epidemiological data on canine and human dirofilariosis in the Rostov Region (Southern Russia) are presented. Prevalence of Dirofilaria spp. infections in 795 autochthonous dogs, assessed by the Knott test, was 20.25%. The highest prevalence was found in Novocherkassk (38.3%) and Rostov-on-Don (18.5%), while prevalences were lower in other points of the region. Prevalence of D. repens was 44.7%, prevalence of D. immitis was 30.3%, and coinfections were observed in 25.0% of the dog population. A case finding study carried out during 9 years (2000–2009) revealed 131 cases of human dirofilariosis in the Rostov Region, 129 of subcutaneous dirofilariosis and 2 of pulmonary dirofilariosis. Seroprevalence among 317 healthy blood donors from the Rostov Region was 10.4%, while seroprevalence in policemen living in Rostov city and working in training dogs was 19%. These data show high infection rates of Dirofilaria spp. in both human and dog populations of Rostov, probably because of the existence of favorable conditions for the transmission in this region.

Abstract

Liquid crystal (LC) director distribution and optical transmission for different types of heterophase systems with different LC boundary conditions is simulated. The first type is a transparent isotropic material with spherical or cylindrical liquid crystalline objects. There are polymer dispersed liquid crystal, LC fiber, lyotropic LC in polarizing films, LC in microgroove and nanogrooves and pores. The second type is an LC layer incorporating an isotropic transparent or non-transparent object like microparticles and nanoparticles, spacers, protrusions in multi-domain vertical alignment LC display et al. The system parameters' influence on LC display performances is discussed.

Abstract

Potassium permanganate oxidizes a mixture of 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (THP) 1 and dicyanomethane to 2-dicyanomethylidenetetrahydropyridine 2, but using manganese dioxide leads to the unusual oxidative hydroxymethylation of 1; subsequent treatment of the 3-hydroxymethyltetrahydropyridine 4 formed with aqueous potassium permanganate results in lactamination, accompanied by aromatization or oxodihydroxylation.

Abstract

A scheme is developed for establishing the mechanism of heterogeneous chemical reactions by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) using cathodoluminescent markers (or flares CLF). Diagnostic formulas are found for the distribution function of product crystals with respect to their states under different reaction conditions. The diagnostic scheme is checked for the reaction of F-apatite with phosphoric acid.

Abstract

Condensation of arylboronic acids with 4-hydroxy-3-(α-hydroxybenzyl)-1-methyl-4-phenylpiperidine afforded 2,4,8a-triarylperhydro[1,3,2]dioxaborinino[5,4-c]pyridines. The molecular structure of 6-methyl-2,4,8a-triphenylperhydro[1,3,2]dioxaborinino[5,4-c]pyridine was established by X-ray diffraction analysis.

Abstract

Reactions of 2-chloro-1-cyano-2-trifluoromethylethylenes with 2-aminopyridines were studied. According to the data of NMR spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction analysis, the first stage of the reaction involves alkenylation of the exocyclic nitrogen atom of 2-aminopyridines followed by formation of pyrido[1,2-a]pyrimidines.
