Abstract

Introduction: Consumption of fava beans seeds can be harmful to both humans and animals due to the presence of pyrimidine glucosides: vicine and convicine. Therefore, seeds, feed supplements, and protein extracts derived from fava beans should be monitored for the contents of pyrimidine derivatives., Objectives: The main objective of this work was the development and validation of an inexpensive, uncomplicated, quick, and robust method for the quantitation of vicine and convicine in seeds of fava beans., Methodology: Plant material was extracted using a dual-phase extraction system to remove lipophilic contaminants and deactivate residual enzymes. Pyrimidine glucosides together with the internal standard: 5-bromouridine were separated using capillary zone electrophoresis (CZE) on an uncoated fused-silica capillary with alkaline, tetraborate-based electrolyte. Linearity, limits of detection and quantitation, precision, accuracy, recovery, and robustness of the method were investigated. The method was applied for quantitation of pyrimidine glucosides in seeds., Results: Validation results suggest that the method is suitable for quantitation of pyrimidine glucosides, although it may not be sensitive enough for low-concentrated samples. Application of the method showed that seeds of the investigated variety of fava beans contain both vicine at 10-15 mg/g of dry weight and convicine at 3-5 mg/g of dry weight., Conclusion: Developed and validated CZE-ultraviolet (UV) method is suitable for analysis of pyrimidine glucosides in seeds of Vicia faba L. var. minor. It can be used as an inexpensive, greener alternative to more advanced methods while providing equally reliable and accurate results., (© 2020 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.)

Abstract

Over 14 000 patients aged 15-24 are estimated to be diagnosed with cancer in the European Union (EU) each year. Teenagers and young adults (TYA) often fall down gaps between children's and adults cancer services. The specific challenges of providing optimal care to them are described, but we present a summary of recent progress. Progress to overcome these challenges is happening at different rates across Europe. We summarise the European national projects in this field but more recently we have seen the beginnings of European coordination. Within the EU 7th Funding Programme (FP7) European Network for Cancer Research in Children and Adolescents programme (ENCCA), a specific European Network for Teenagers and Young Adults with Cancer has held a series of scientific meetings, including professionals, patients and caregivers. This group has proposed unanswered research questions and agreed key features of a high-quality service that can improve outcomes for TYA with cancer, including the primacy of collaboration between adult and paediatric services to eliminate the gap in the management of TYA with cancer., (© 2015 John Wiley & Sons Ltd.)

Abstract

Background: The prognostic significance of different types of renal dysfunction in patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) treated with percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) has not been well characterized., Methods: The single-center AMI registry encompassed 1,486 consecutive AMI patients treated with PCI, who were followed by mean 29.7 months. Subjects with an estimated glomerular filtration rate <60 mL/min per 1.73 m2 at baseline were selected (n = 283, 19.0%) and incorporated into the chronic kidney disease (CKD) group. The control group consisted of 1,203 subjects with normal renal function (81.0%). The CKD patients were divided into subgroups: with contrast-induced nephropathy - CKD + CIN (n = 68, 4.6%) and without - CKD-CIN (n = 215, 14.5%)., Results: Remote mortality rate was significantly higher in CKD group (34.6%) and in particular subgroups: CKD + CIN (47.0%), CKD-CIN (31.0%) than in controls (9.1%, P < 0.001 for all study groups vs controls). Multivariate analysis identified CKD as an independent predictor of any-cause death in the whole population (hazard ratio [HR] 1.77, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.60-1.94, P < 0.001). Similarly, CKD + CIN contrary to CKD-CIN had significant and independent influence on remote survival in study population (HR 2.16, 95% CI 1.95-2.37, P < 0.001)., Conclusions: CKD and its types have significant, negative influence on long-term survival in AMI patients treated with PCI. It is especially strongly expressed in those CKD patients who develop contrast-induced nephropathy, which occurrence is an independent risk factor of mortality associated with over twofold increase of death hazard.
