Background: In this study, the fresh stool samples from 254 children under 5 years of age with acute gastroenteritis which were delivered between October 2012 and December 2013 were collected., Methods: In the stool samples, rotavirus antigens were investigated using two different immunochromatographic methods which are routinely used at different times, namely the RIDA ® QUICK Rotavirus/Adenovirus Combi Test (R-Biopharm AG, Germany) and the Genx ® Rotavirus Test (Diamed-Lab, Turkey), in addition to the Rotavirus Ag (Stool) ELISA (DRG, Germany) kit. The results were compared with reverse transcriptase PCR (RT-PCR)., Results: When the Genx ® Rotavirus Test and RIDA ® QUICK Rotavirus/Adenovirus Combi Test immunochromatographic methods were compared with RT-PCR, their sensitivity and specificity were found as 97.1%, 100%, and 80.4%, 72%, respectively. As to the Rotavirus Ag (Stool) ELISA method, on the other hand, its sensitivity was found to be 95.1% and its specificity was 86.5%. The most common genotype was G9P[8] (40%), which was followed by the G1P[8] (18.7%) and G3P[8] (9.6%) genotypes., Conclusion: Consequently, it was revealed that the sensitivity of ELISA and immunochromatographic methods, which provide results in a short time and are used in the investigation of rotavirus antigen, was high and their specificity was low; further studies to determine the distribution of G and P genotypes will contribute to establishing strategies for vaccine development for rotavirus in the world., (© 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.)

(S)-(-)-1-(1'-napthyl)-ethanol (S-NE) is an important intermediate for the preparation of mevinic acid analogs, which is used for the treatment of hyperlipidemia. The objectives of the study were to isolate a microorganism that could effectively reduce 1-acetonaphthone (1-ACN) to S-NE, to determine the influence that the physicochemical parameters would have on the reduction by the isolated microorganism, and to attempt large-scale studies with the microorganism. Over the years fungi have been considered a promising biocatalyst and it has been presumed that many fungal species have not been isolated and therefore the current study focused on possible isolation of these microorganisms. A total of 72 fungal isolates were screened for their ability to reduce 1-ACN to its corresponding alcohol. The isolate, EBK-62, identified as Alternaria alternata, was found to be the most successful at reducing the ketone to the corresponding alcohol in the submerged culture. The reaction conditions were systematically optimized for the reducing agent A. alternata EBK-62, which showed high stereospecificity and good conversion for the reduction. The preparative scale study was carried out in a 2 L bioreactor and a total of 4.9 g of S-NE in optically pure form (>99% enantiomeric excess) was produced in 48 h. Objectives: We aimed to present our experience regarding the unusual vascular complications and specific treatment strategies in patients who underwent transradial coronary procedure (TRC)., Background: Transradial access provides lower vascular access site complication rates compared with transfemoral access. However, there is lack of data obtained from large study populations concerning the incidence and treatment strategies of hemorrhagic and vascular complications following a TRC in the literature., Methods: 10,324 patients (2,652 patients with percutaneous coronary intervention and 7,672 patients with a diagnostic transradial coronary angiography) who underwent a TRC from February 2010 to December 2014 were reviewed to identify cases of large hematoma, perforation, arteriovenous fistula, and pseudoaneurysm., Results: The observed incidence was 0.44% (45 patients) for all unusual vascular and hemorrhagic complications. Of these 45 patients; 32 patients (0.31%) presented with large hematoma (≥6 cm), 8 patients (0.08%) presented with perforation, 4 patients (0.04%) presented with arteriovenous fistula (AVF), and only 1 case (0.009%) presented with radial artery pseudoaneurysm. Forty-one of forty-five patients were managed with mechanical compression. Surgery was performed in only 3 cases; a patient with a brachial artery perforation leading to compartment syndrome, a patient with AVF resulting in limb ischemia, and a patient with radial artery pseudoaneurysm. A right internal mammarian artery perforation resulting in huge breast hematoma was treated via endovascular graft stent implantation., Conclusions: Hemorrhagic and vascular complications are rarely seen during TRC. A total of 120 fungal strains were isolated from soil samples and evaluated in the bioreduction of substituted acetophenones to the corresponding (R)-alcohols. Among these strains, isolate Trichothecium roseum EBK-18 was highly effective in the production of (R)-alcohols with excellent enantioselectivity (ee > 99%).
