Abstract Objective This cross‐sectional study aimed to determine the epidemiology of olfactory and gustatory dysfunctions related to COVID‐19 in China. Methods This study was conducted by 45 tertiary Grade‐A hospitals in China. Online and offline questionnaire data were obtained from patients infected with COVID‐19 between December 28, 2022, and February 21, 2023. The collected information included basic demographics, medical history, smoking and drinking history, vaccination history, changes in olfactory and gustatory functions before and after infection, and other postinfection symptoms, as well as the duration and improvement status of olfactory and gustatory disorders. Results Complete questionnaires were obtained from 35,566 subjects. The overall incidence of olfactory and taste dysfunction was 67.75%. Being female or being a cigarette smoker increased the likelihood of developing olfactory and taste dysfunction. Having received four doses of the vaccine or having good oral health or being a alcohol drinker decreased the risk of such dysfunction. Before infection, the average olfactory and taste VAS scores were 8.41 and 8.51, respectively; after infection, they decreased to 3.69 and 4.29 and recovered to 5.83 and 6.55 by the time of the survey. The median duration of dysosmia and dysgeusia was 15 and 12 days, respectively, with 0.5% of patients having symptoms lasting for more than 28 days. The overall self‐reported improvement rate was 59.16%. Recovery was higher in males, never smokers, those who received two or three vaccine doses, and those that had never experienced dental health issues, or chronic accompanying symptoms. Conclusions The incidence of dysosmia and dysgeusia following infection with the SARS‐CoV‐2 virus is high in China. Incidence and prognosis are influenced by several factors, including sex, SARS‐CoV‐2 vaccination, history of head‐facial trauma, nasal and oral health status, smoking and drinking history, and the persistence of accompanying symptoms.

Abstract Immunosuppression is a major hallmark of tumor progression in non‐small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Cluster of differentiation 147 (CD147), an important pro‐tumorigenic factor, is closely linked to NSCLC immunosuppression. However, the role of CD147 di‐methylation in the immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment (TME) remains unclear. Here, di‐methylation of CD147 at Lys148 (CD147‐K148me2) is identified as a common post‐translational modification (PTM) in NSCLC that is significantly associated with unsatisfying survival outcomes among NSCLC sufferers, especially those in the advanced stages of the disease. The methyltransferase NSD2 catalyzes CD147 to generate CD147‐K148me2. Further analysis demonstrates that CD147‐K148me2 reestablishes the immunosuppressive TME and promotes NSCLC progression. Mechanistically, this modification promotes the interaction between cyclophilin A (CyPA) and CD147, and in turn, increases CCL5 gene transcription by activating p38‐ZBTB32 signaling, leading to increased NSCLC cell‐derived CCL5 secretion. Subsequently, CD147‐K148me2‐mediated CCL5 upregulation facilitates M2‐like tumor‐associated macrophage (TAM) infiltration in NSCLC tissues via CCL5/CCR5 axis‐dependent intercellular crosstalk between tumor cells and macrophages, which is inhibited by blocking CD147‐K148me2 with the targeted antibody 12C8. Overall, this study reveals the role of CD147‐K148me2‐driven intercellular crosstalk in the development of NSCLC immunosuppression, and provides a potential interventional strategy for PTM‐targeted NSCLC therapy.

Abstract The compound drought‐extreme precipitation event (CDEP) is one of the most impactful successive compound events that shift from drought to extreme precipitation in the same location within a short period. Due to its dual characteristics of drought and flood, CDEP tends to be more destructive than the impact of individual drought or flood. Yet few studies have analyzed the likelihood of CDEP at different time intervals and their potential variations under global warming. In this study, we assessed the coincidence rate between droughts and extreme precipitation events at 1‐month (CDEP‐1), 2‐month (CDEP‐2), and 3‐month (CDEP‐3) intervals, as well as their potential changes in a 1.5 and 2°C warming world (under both SSP2‐4.5 and SSP5‐8.5 scenarios). Our results suggest that global droughts and extreme precipitation events have coincided more frequently at 1‐month interval than at 2‐ and 3‐month intervals during the period 1985–2014. The global average coincidence rates of CDEP‐1, CDEP‐2, and CDEP‐3 are 24%, 10%, and 7%, respectively. Notably, the coincidence rate of CDEP‐1 exceeded 40% in Eastern Asia, north‐eastern North America, and India, indicating that more than 40% of droughts have been followed by extreme precipitation events in the next month after drought termination. Under both SSP2‐4.5 and SSP5‐8.5 scenarios, climate warming will increase the coincidence rate of CDEP‐1, CDEP‐2, and CDEP‐3, especially will lead to higher values in the coincidence rate of CDEP‐1. This study contributes to a better understanding of the patterns of CDEP and helps to develop more targeted risk management strategies.

Abstract Developing high‐efficiency and stable bifunctional electrocatalysts for water splitting remains a great challenge. Herein, NiMoO4 nanowires as sacrificial templates to synthesize Mo‐doped NiFe Prussian blue analogs are employed, which can be easily phosphorized to Mo‐doped Fe2xNi2(1‐x)P nanotubes (Mo‐FeNiP NTs). This synthesis method enables the controlled etching of NiMoO4 nanowires that results in a unique hollow nanotube architecture. As a bifunctional catalyst, the Mo‐FeNiP NTs present lower overpotential and Tafel slope of 151.3 (232.6) mV at 100 mA cm−2 and 76.2 (64.7) mV dec−1 for HER (OER), respectively. Additionally, it only requires an ultralow cell voltage of 1.47 V to achieve 10 mA cm−2 for overall water splitting and can steadily operate for 200 h at 100 mA cm−2. First‐principles calculations demonstrate that Mo doping can effectively adjust the electron redistribution of the Ni hollow sites to optimize the hydrogen adsorption‐free energy for HER. Besides, in situ Raman characterization reveals the dissolving of doped Mo can promote a rapid surface reconstruction on Mo‐FeNiP NTs to dynamically stable (Fe)Ni‐oxyhydroxide layers, serving as the actual active species for OER. The work proposes a rational approach addressed by electron manipulation and surface reconstruction of bimetallic phosphides to regulate both the HER and OER activity.

Abstract The presence of stone cells in pears is recognized as a problem for the pear processing industry. Bacillus and mold can degrade stone cells because of their potential to digest cellulose and lignin, but they cannot be used for the degradation test of pear stone cells. In this study Lactoplantibacillus plantarum JYLP‐326 was used in single culture or in the mixed culture with Saccharomyces cerevisiae Y2 to study their potential to degrade stone cells during fermentation and the mechanism of degradation was further explored. Synergy in cellulase activity was observed in the mixed‐culture where the maximum activity was observed at 96th hour of fermentation. Activities of endoglucanase, exoglucanase and β‐glucosidase were 1.75, 4.58, and 2.31. The degradation rate of stone cells in the mixed‐culture was 37.67%, which was significantly higher than that the results obtained for single cultures. The results of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showed that the surface of the cultured stone cells became rough. Metabolomics studies confirmed the presence of specific metabolites related to the degradation of stone cells after the fermentation. It was concluded that the mixed‐culture fermentation using the above‐mentioned strains could be exploited by the pear processing industry to degrade stone cells.

Abstract Over the years, lead‐based piezoelectric ceramics found extensive use in vital fields such as sensors and actuators. Despite their exceptional electromechanical properties, lead‐containing materials pose severe environmental risks and foster a new era of lead‐free piezoelectric materials after decades of research. However, recent comparative assessments of potassium sodium niobate (KNN) versus lead zirconate titanate (PZT) piezoelectric materials proposed that the environmental damage already presented before use due to raw material extraction and processing, invoking concerns on the true greenness of the lead‐free alternatives. Nevertheless, many other factors deserve further consideration, for example, reference geometry and life cycle stage. Herein, the comprehensive life cycle assessment is undertaken on PZT and KNN‐based ceramics with a unit volume of 0.001 m3 from cradle to gate. Results show that PZT exhibits higher negative impacts than KNN‐based counterparts, attributed to lead extraction, processing, and associated environmental emissions. Across primary quantitative impact indicators from toxicity, environmental, and resource aspects, KNN‐based ceramics impose fewer risks on the environment and human health, with the overall impact being only 28% of PZT ceramics. Still, more efficient methods are required for KNN‐based ceramics to reduce the high energy consumption and emission during extraction and purification of raw material Nb2O5. This work not only offers critical insights for material development but also serves as a multifaceted reference for advanced fabrication technologies.

Abstract Arginine and lysine, frequently appearing as a pair on histones, have been proven to carry diverse modifications and execute various epigenetic regulatory functions. However, the most context‐specific and transient effectors of these marks, while significant, have evaded study as detection methods have thus far not reached a standard to capture these ephemeral events. Herein, a pair of complementary photo‐arginine/δ‐photo‐lysine (R‐dz/K‐dz) probes is developed and involve these into histone peptide, nucleosome, and chromatin substrates to capture and explore the interactomes of Arg and Lys hPTMs. By means of these developed tools, this study identifies that H3R2me2a can recruit MutS protein homolog 6 (MSH6), otherwise repelDouble PHD fingers 2 (DPF2), Retinoblastoma binding protein 4/7 (RBBP4/7). And it is disclosed that H3R2me2a inhibits the chromatin remodeling activity of the cBAF complex by blocking the interaction between DPF2 (one component of cBAF) and the nucleosome. In addition, the novel pairs of H4K5 PTMs and respective readers are highlighted, namely H4K5me‐Lethal(3)malignant brain tumor‐like protein 2 (L3MBTL2), H4K5me2‐L3MBTL2, and H4K5acK8ac‐YEATS domain‐containing protein 4 (YEATS4). These powerful tools pave the way for future investigation of related epigenetic mechanisms including but not limited to hPTMs.

Abstract Objective Our study aims to investigate the association between the Hounsfield unit (Hu) value of the insular cortex (IC) during emergency admission and the subsequent occurrence of post‐operative neurocardiogenic injury (NCI) among patients afflicted with aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH). Methods Patients baseline characteristics were juxtaposed between those with and without NCI. The significant variables were incorporated into a multivariable stepwise logistic regression model. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were drafted for each significant variable, yielding cutoff values and the area under the curve (AUC). Subgroup and sensitivity analyses were performed to assess the predictive performance across various cohorts and ascertain result stability. Propensity score matching (PSM) was ultimately employed to redress any baseline characteristic disparities. This paper investigates segmental lining, developing a numerical model to explore the dynamic interaction between saturated soil and the lining structure, and analyses the effects of the angle of incident load and the wavelength-to-diameter ratio on the displacement, deformation, and distribution of the plastic zone of the structure. The findings demonstrate that the structure experiences vertical compressive deformation during ground shock predominantly. The structure can be categorised into the major deformation region (with an angle within 60° of the vertical direction) and the minor deformation region (with an angle within 30° of the horizontal direction), determined by the structure’s radial deformation. The maximum radial velocity of the nodes in the major deformation area is greater and swifter, whereas the maximum radial velocity of the nodes in the minor deformation region is lesser and mostly equivalent in extent. The maximum radial displacement of the nodes in the major deformation area is highly receptive to the loading wavelength–diameter ratio (L/D) (the ratio of the load wavelength to the structure’s outer diameter) when the wavelength-to-diameter ratio (L/D) is small (1 ≤ L/D ≤ 5). Conversely, the maximum radial displacement in the minor deformation area is considerably sensitive to the wavelength–diameter ratio when 5 ≤ L/D ≤ 30. The total displacement and velocity of the structure remain unaffected by the angle of load incidence. However, it affects the maximum deformation of the structure as well as the location where the maximum node velocity occurs. In addition, the joint surface of the structure experiences the highest plastic strain at an angle of load incidence of 60°.

Abstract China is currently the world's largest producer of food irradiation. Despite the long‐standing (about 100 years) evidence supporting the safety of food irradiation, consumers’ acceptance of irradiated foods remains limited. This study aimed to investigate the development of food irradiation in China and identify the barriers that keep consumers away from irradiated foods. This was accomplished by exploring the relevant policies of food irradiation, the size and distribution of irradiation facilities in China, and analyzing their relationships between consumer characteristics and the acceptance of irradiated food. To achieve these objectives, we conducted an online survey of participants from Hubei, China (N = 264). The results reveal that irradiation facilities are mainly distributed in large coastal cities such as the Bohai Bay, the Yangtze River Delta, and the Greater Bay Area. Furthermore, the study identified that consumer’ acceptance of irradiated food is directly related to their level of understanding. Approximately 22% of the sampled consumers reported that they would not accept that they have consumed irradiated food and most of them (41%) stated that they would not purchase irradiated food if they were aware of buying irradiated food. Specifically, consumers expressed discomfort with consuming irradiated food under unknown circumstances. This trend is more prevalent among female, low‐educated, and older consumers, with 40% of the sampled population indicating that they would not buy irradiated food. Given the strong correlation between knowledge and acceptance of irradiated foods, the study suggests that policy reform should prioritize enhancing the understanding of irradiated food, particularly among female, low‐educated, and older consumers.

Abstract Background Skull base chordoma is a rare and aggressive tumour of the bone that has a high likelihood of recurrence. The fundamental differences in single cells between primary and recurrent lesions remain poorly understood, impeding development of effective treatment approaches. Methods To obtain an understanding of the differences in single cells between primary and recurrent chordomas, we performed single‐cell RNA sequencing and T‐cell/B‐cell receptor (BCR) sequencing. This allowed us to delineate the differences between the two types of tumour cells, tumour‐infiltrating lymphocytes, myeloid cells, fibroblasts and B cells. Copy number variants (CNVs) were detected and compared between the tumour types to assess heterogeneity. Selected samples were subjected to immunohistochemistry to validate protein expression. Fluorescence in situ hybridisation experiments, Transwell assays and xenograft mouse models helped verify the role of fibronectin 1 (FN1) in chordoma. Results Promoting natural killer (NK) cell and CD8_GZMK T‐cell function or inhibiting the transformation of CD8_GZMK T cells to CD8_ZNF683 T cells and promoting the transformation of natural killer T (NKT) cells to NK cells are promising strategies for preventing chordoma recurrence. Additionally, inhibiting the M2‐like activity of tumour‐associated macrophages (TAMs) could be an effective approach. Antigen‐presenting cancer‐associated fibroblasts (apCAFs) and dendritic cells (DCs) with high enrichment of the antigen‐presenting signature were enriched in primary chordomas. There were fewer plasma cells and BCR clonotypes in recurrent chordomas. Remarkably, FN1 was upregulated, had more CNVs, and was more highly secreted by tumours, macrophages, CD4 T cells, CD8 T cells and fibroblasts in recurrent chordoma than in primary chordoma. Finally, FN1 enhanced the invasion and proliferation of chordomas in vivo and in vitro. Conclusion Our comprehensive picture of the microenvironment of primary and recurrent chordomas provides deep insights into the mechanisms of chordoma recurrence. FN1 is an important target for chordoma therapy.

Abstract With the incorporation of renewable energy, load frequency control (LFC) becomes more challenging due to uncertain power generation and changeable load demands. The electric vehicle (EV) has been a popular transportation and can also provide flexible options to play a role in frequency regulation. In this paper, a novel adaptive composite controller is designed to solve the LFC problem for the interconnected power system with electric vehicles and wind turbine. EVs are used as regulation resources to effectively compensate the power mismatch. First, the sliding mode controller is developed to reduce the random influences caused by the wind turbine generation system. Second, an auxiliary controller with reinforcement learning is proposed to produce adaptive control signals, which will be attached to the primary proportion‐integration‐differentiation control signal in a real‐time manner. Finally, by considering random wind power, load disturbances and output constraints, the proposed scheme is verified on a two‐area power system under four different cases. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed adaptive composite frequency control scheme has a competitive performance with regard to dynamic performance.

Abstract Neural precursor cell expressed developmentally downregulated 4‐like (NEDD4L), a member of the E3 ubiquitin‐protein ligases, encoded by NEDD4L gene, was found to be involved in in salt sensitivity by regulating sodium reabsorption in salt‐sensitive rats. The authors aimed to explore the associations of NEDD4L genetic variants with salt sensitivity, blood pressure (BP) changes and hypertension incidence in Chinese adults. Participants from 124 families in Northern China in the Baoji Salt‐Sensitive Study Cohort in 2004, who received the chronic salt intake intervention, including a 7‐day low‐salt diet (3.0 g/day) and a 7‐day high‐salt diet (18 g/day), were analyzed. Besides, the development of hypertension over 14 years was evaluated. NEDD4L single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) rs74408486 was shown to be significantly associated with systolic BP (SBP), diastolic BP (DBP) and mean arterial pressure (MAP) responses to low‐salt diet, while SNPs rs292449 and rs2288775 were significantly associated with pulse pressure (PP) response to high‐salt diet. In addition, SNP rs4149605, rs73450471, and rs482805 were significantly associated with the longitudinal changes in SBP, DBP, MAP, or PP at 14 years of follow‐up. SNP rs292449 was significantly associated with hypertension incidence over the 14‐year follow‐up. Finally, this gene‐based analysis found that NEDD4L was significantly associated with longitudinal BP changes and the incidence of hypertension over the 14‐year follow‐up. This study indicated that gene polymorphism in NEDD4L serve an important function in salt sensitivity, longitudinal BP change and development of hypertension in the Chinese population.

Abstract Purpose Glioma patients have varying degrees of psychiatric symptoms, which severely affect the quality of life of patients and their families. The present study investigated the correlation between preoperative psychiatric symptoms and local cerebral perfusion parameters of in glioma patients. Patients and methods The depression, anxiety, and cognitive impairment (CI) scores of 39 patients were assessed separately, and all of the patients underwent a preoperative perfusion computed tomography scan. Abstract The atmospheric CO2 enrichment can seriously affect rice root growth. Alternate wetting and drying (AWD) irrigation, which can also increase root growth, is a widely promoted water‐saving technology for future climate, yet how elevated CO2 (eCO2) influences rice root growth under AWD remains unclear. In the present study, we examined the root growth of Yangdao 6 (YD 6) and Koshihikari (KOS) cultured under different water irrigation regimes (well‐watered and AWD) and CO2 concentration (400 and 800 ppm). AWD reduced shoot dry weight of KOS compared with WW under ambient CO2 (400 ppm, aCO2), while the shoot dry weight of KOS showed no difference between WW and AWD treatments under eCO2. Additional, under aCO2, AWD did not affect the exhibited similar root dry weight, length, total surface area, and volume of YD 6 and KOS relative to WW. However, under eCO2, AWD significantly promoted the root dry weight, root length, total root surface area, and root volume of YD 6 and KOS. Furthermore, root ABA content of YD 6 and KOS was significantly higher under AWD than under WW. Then, the OsNCED3 (a key gene for ABA biosynthesis) RNAi lines were used to check the role of ABA in root growth under eCO2 with AWD conditions. The results showed that AWD increased the ABA content and root parameters of WT but not the OsNCED3 RNAi lines under eCO2. Overall, the results suggest that eCO2 can improve rice root growth under AWD by involving root ABA, which contributes to the understanding of water‐saving irrigation on rice in the future climate.

Abstract Rechargeable Li‐CO2 battery represents a sustainable technology by virtue of CO2 recyclability and energy storage capability. Unfortunately, the sluggish mass transport and electron transfer in bulky high‐crystalline discharge product of Li2CO3, severely hinder its practical capacity and rechargeability. Herein, a heterostructure of isolated metalloid Te atomic cluster anchored on N‐doped carbon nanosheets is designed (TeAC@NCNS) as a metal‐free cathode for Li‐CO2 battery. X‐ray absorption spectroscopy analysis demonstrates that the abundant and dispersed Te active centers can be stabilized by C atoms in form of the covalent bond. The fabricated battery shows an unprecedented full‐discharge capacity of 28.35 mAh cm−2 at 0.05 mA cm−2 and long‐term cycle life of up to 1000 h even at a high cut‐off capacity of 1 mAh cm−2. A series of ex situ characterizations combined with theoretical calculations demonstrate that the abundant Te atomic clusters acting as active centers can drive the electron redistribution of carbonate via forming TeO bonds, giving rise to poor‐crystalline Li2CO3 film during the discharge process. Moreover, the efficient electron transfer between the Te centers and intermediate species is energetically beneficial for nucleation and accelerates the decomposition of Li2CO3 on the TeAC@NCNS during the discharge/charge process.

Abstract Rare circulating tumor cells (CTCs) are always harvested with large numbers of white blood cells (WBCs) by current CTC isolation techniques, which influences the accuracy of CTC‐related gene and protein analysis. Therefore, it is very urgent to develop a method for efficient isolation of CTCs with high purity. In this work, we fabricated a reversibly assembled interface by layer‐by‐layer assembly of biotinylated poly‐(L‐lysine‐graft‐ethylene glycol) (PLL‐g‐PEG‐biotin), streptavidin, and CTC‐specific antibody on a three‐dimensional conductive scaffold, and further embedded it into a customized microchip for CTC capture. The assembled multilayers increased the roughness of the scaffold, which improved the capture efficiency. Importantly, the PLL‐g‐PEG‐biotin covalently coupled with CTCs could be detached from the scaffold by electrostatic repulsion, and the released CTCs could be recaptured on the conductive scaffold via electrostatic attraction while the WBCs were continuously drifted away. This reversible capture and release strategy significantly improved the purity of CTCs, and pure CTCs were obtained from cancer patients’ blood samples for gene mutation assay, which will be of great significance for assisting cancer diagnosis and treatment in a noninvasive way.

The tunnel lining segments are assumed to be rigid, and the tensile, compression, shear, and bending properties of the joints are considered. A simplified calculation method for the dynamic response of the structure under the ground shock is proposed, and its correctness is verified by comparing it with results from the finite element method. Using this method, the dynamic response of a subway tunnel lining is calculated, the change in joint force is studied, and the influence of the angle between the load and the center of the minimum segment and the wavelength–diameter ratio on the peak joint force is examined. The results indicate that under the ground shock, shallow tunnel lining is in the impulsive regime, and the force of segment joints is mainly compressed. As the wavelength–diameter ratio increases, the peak values of the lining top displacement and vertical deformation increase significantly, and the proportion of displacement and deformation caused by the inertial force gradually decreases. Sine and cosine functions can be used to preliminarily judge if the bending moment and radial force of the joint are too large or too small, so that the resistance of the lining to ground shock can be improved to a certain extent by setting the positions of lining joints reasonably.

This paper proposes a multifrequency seamless dual-link handover scheme based on beamforming for the high-speed railway (HSR) communication, i.e., when the train travels to the edge of overlapping area of the adjacent two cells, a gain beam is assigned to the overlapping area by the target base station (BS) using a beamforming technique to cover the entire region to enhance the received signal strength (RSS) and handover opportunity. The switching antenna is allowed to handover multiple times to improve the traditional scheme and reduce the handover failure probability (HFP) greatly. In the process of signal reception, considering the impact of the intercell cochannel interference on the RSS, the proposed scheme uses signal to interference ratio (SIR) instead of the RSS to indicate the received signal quality to optimize handover mode. The handover success probability (HSP) is analyzed to describe the relationship between train location and the probability. We also establish a probabilistic model and corresponding handover algorithm for the proposed scheme to complete the handover operations and theoretically analyze a series of indexes including handover trigger probability (HTP), HFP, communication interruption probability (CIP), and HSP. Theoretical and experimental results show that the proposed scheme can effectively improve the HTP and HSP and greatly reduce the HFP and the CIP.

Abstract The authors investigate and demonstrate an all‐optical hybrid fiber‐free space optical (FSO)‐fiber communication system based on optical code division multiple access (OCDMA). Under different turbulence effects, the interception probability and interception distance are used as security metrics, and optimal parameters are obtained when the system meets the requirements of reliability and security simultaneously. The interception probability increases with the enhancement of turbulence effect, and decreases as the number of interfering users increases. In the case of strong turbulence, the maximum interception probability is 4.14 × 10−4. The authors design and build a 10 Gb/s all‐optical hybrid fiber‐FSO‐fiber CDMA communication system. It is shown that, under the soft‐decision forward‐error‐correction threshold of 2 × 10−2, this scheme can guarantee physical layer security in the second 20‐km optical fiber link under different turbulence conditions, while the interception distance is 8 km in the first optical fiber link. Under the hard‐decision forward‐error‐correction threshold of 3.38 × 10−3, the whole system can ensure the physical layer security.

Abstract Corin, a transmembrane serine protease that can cleave pro‐atrial natriuretic peptide (Pro‐ANP) into smaller bioactive molecule atrial natriuretic peptide, has been shown to be involved in the pathophysiology of hypertension, cardiac hypertrophy. We sought to examine the associations of corin genetic variations with salt sensitivity, blood pressure (BP) changes and hypertension incidence. We studied participants of the original Baoji Salt‐Sensitive cohort, recruited from 124 families from seven Chinese villages in 2004 who sequentially received a usual baseline salt diet, a 7‐day low salt diet (3 g/day) and a 7‐day high salt diet (18 g/day), respectively. They were followed up for 8 years (in 2009, 2012) to evaluate the development of hypertension. Corin SNP rs3749584 was significantly associated with diastolic BP (DBP) and mean arterial pressure (MAP) response to low‐salt diet, while rs4695253, rs17654278 were associated with pulse pressure (PP) response to low‐salt diet. SNPs rs4695253, rs12509275, rs2351783, rs2271036, rs2271037 were significantly associated with systolic BP (SBP), DBP, and MAP responses to high‐salt diet. In addition, SNPs rs12641823, rs6834933, rs2271036, and rs22710367 were significantly associated with the longitudinal changes in SBP, DBP, MAP, or PP over 8 years of follow‐up. SNP rs73814824 was significantly associated with the incidence of hypertension over 8 years. Gene‐based analysis showed that corin gene was significantly associated with longitudinal BP changes and hypertension incidence after 8‐year follow‐up. This study suggests that corin may play a role in salt sensitivity, BP progression, and development of hypertension.

Abstract Uromodulin, also named Tamm Horsfall protein, have been associated with renal function and sodium homeostasis regulation. The authors sought to examine the effects of salt intake on plasma and urinary uromodulin levels and the association of its genetic variants with salt sensitivity in Chinese adults. Eighty patients from our natural population cohort were maintained sequentially either on a usual diet for 3 days, a low‐salt diet (3.0 g) for 7 days, and a high‐salt diet (18.0 g) for an additional 7 days. In addition, the authors studied 514 patients of the Baoji Salt‐Sensitive Study, recruited from 124 families who received the same salt intake intervention, and investigated the association of genetic variations in uromodulin gene with salt sensitivity. Plasma uromodulin levels were significantly lower on a high‐salt diet than on a baseline diet (28.3 ± 4.5 vs. 54.9 ± 8.8 ng/ml). Daily urinary excretions of uromodulin were significantly decreased on a high‐salt diet than on a low‐salt diet (28.7 ± 6.7 vs. 157.2 ± 21.7 ng/ml). SNPs rs7193058 and rs4997081 were associated with the diastolic blood pressure (DBP), mean arterial pressure (MAP) responses to the high‐salt diet. In addition, several SNPs in the uromodulin gene were significantly associated with pulse pressure (PP) response to the low‐salt intervention. This study shows that dietary salt intake affects plasma and urinary uromodulin levels and that uromodulin may play a role in the pathophysiological process of salt sensitivity in the Chinese populations.

Abstract Building on past work showing that the Hilbert transform can be used for edge feature enhancement, a new edge feature enhancement method is developed using a two‐dimensional (2D) isotropic Hilbert transform of the Cauchy distribution. First, both the shape of the Hilbert kernel and the Hilbert transform of edge feature models (step and delta) and various simulated signals result in edge feature enhancement, the properties of which are derived and confirmed. Second, Cauchy distribution as low‐pass filter is introduced in Hilbert transform to get new edge feature enhancement operator, and its efficiency under various criteria is comprehensively discussed. Third, a 2D isotropic extension is presented using a circularly symmetric window function. Finally, two experiments, including edge detection and image segmentation, are performed to validate the proposed edge feature enhancement method. The experimental results of the method applied to the Berkeley Segmentation Dataset and remote sensing images demonstrate that the new method is effective for edge detection and image segmentation.

Abstract Asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are lung diseases characterized by airflow limitation and chronic inflammation. More and more studies have shown that the occurrence and development of asthma and COPD are related to abnormal immune responses caused by dysregulation of many genetic and environmental factors. The exact pathogenesis of the disease is still unclear. A large number of studies have shown that the NLRP3 inflammasome is involved in the process of chronic airway inflammation in asthma and COPD. Here, we summarize recent advances in the mechanism of NLRP3 inflammasome activation and regulation and its role in the pathogenesis of inflammatory lung diseases such as asthma and COPD. Meanwhile we propose possible therapeutic targets in asthma and COPD.

Abstract Rechargeable zinc (Zn) batteries have been regarded as a potential alternative for energy storage instrument, but the poor life‐span of Zn metal anodes restrain their commercial application. In this work, stripy Zn array (ZnSA) with preferential (002) crystal plane was designed and fabricated through the facile treatment with concentrated phosphoric acid. The depth of stripy array and the content of (002) plane were controlled through the optimization of etching time. The synergistic effect of stripy morphology and preferential crystal plane can increase the electroactive surface area, suppress the corrosion and hydrogen evolution of aqueous electrolyte, induce the horizontal growth along with basal (002) plane, and inhibit the formation of Zn dendrites. The as‐synthesized ZnSA electrodes can achieve ultra‐long lifespan of 2500 h at the current density of 2 mA cm−2 with a constant capacity of 2 mAh cm−2 and still maintain stable cycling of 1200 and 1400 h even at the higher current density of 10 mA cm−2 and plating/stripping depth of 5 mAh cm−2, respectively. This work proposes a facile and effective strategy to improve electrochemical performance of metallic Zn anodes and contributes to the commercial application of Zn ion batteries.

Abstract Domain engineering in ferroelectrics endows flexibility for different functional applications. Whereas the domain engineering strategy for single crystals and thin films is diverse, there is only a limited number of strategies for bulk ceramics. Here, a domain engineering strategy for achieving a compact domain architecture with increased domain‐wall density in (K,Na)NbO3 (KNN)‐based ferroelectric ceramics via mesoscopic chemical inhomogeneity (MCI) is developed. The MCI‐induced interfaces can effectively hinder domain continuity and modify the domain configuration. Besides, the MCI effect also results in diffused phase transitions, which is beneficial for achieving enhanced thermal stability. Modulation of chemical inhomogeneity demonstrates great potential for engineering desirable domain configuration and properties in ferroelectric ceramics. Additionally, the MCI can be easily controlled by regulating the processing condition during solid‐state synthesis, which is advantageous to industrial production.

Abstract Piezoelectric materials enable the conversion of mechanical energy into electrical energy and vice‐versa. Ultrahigh piezoelectricity has been only observed in single crystals. Realization of piezoelectric ceramics with longitudinal piezoelectric constant (d33) close to 2000 pC N–1, which combines single crystal‐like high properties and ceramic‐like cost effectiveness, large‐scale manufacturing, and machinability will be a milestone in advancement of piezoelectric ceramic materials. Here, guided by phenomenological models and phase‐field simulations that provide conditions for flattening the energy landscape of polarization, a synergistic design strategy is demonstrated that exploits compositionally driven local structural heterogeneity and microstructural grain orientation/texturing to provide record piezoelectricity in ceramics. This strategy is demonstrated on [001]PC‐textured and Eu3+‐doped Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3‐PbTiO3 (PMN‐PT) ceramics that exhibit the highest piezoelectric coefficient (small‐signal d33 of up to 1950 pC N–1 and large‐signal d33* of ≈2100 pm V–1) among all the reported piezoelectric ceramics. Extensive characterization conducted using high‐resolution microscopy and diffraction techniques in conjunction with the computational models reveals the underlying mechanisms governing the piezoelectric performance. Further, the impact of losses on the electromechanical coupling is identified, which plays major role in suppressing the percentage of piezoelectricity enhancement, and the fundamental understanding of loss in this study sheds light on further enhancement of piezoelectricity. These results on cost‐effective and record performance piezoelectric ceramics will launch a new generation of piezoelectric applications.

The coal facies and their effects on the coal pore characteristics of the Late Permian Longtan Formation, western Guizhou, were studied, using diverse experiments of macerals and minerals compositions, vitrinite reflectance, and pore characteristics. The results show that five coal facies exist in studied samples, and they are shallow-water covered forest peat swamp facies, moist forest peat swamp facies, dry forest peat swamp facies, low peat swamp facies, and wet land herbaceous peat swamp facies. Among them, the moist forest peat swamp facies accounts for the largest proportion, followed by the shallow-water covered forest peat swamp and dry forest peat swamp facies. The order of pore development degree is identical with the order of moist forest peat swamp facies coal > shallow-water covered forest peat swamp facies coal > dry forest peat swamp facies coal. In contrast to shallow-water covered forest peat swamp facies and dry forest peat swamp facies samples, moist forest peat swamp facies samples have higher porosity and larger pore size. Coal facies play an important role in controlling the pore structure of coal reservoir, which have more effect on pore size distribution than coal rank for the samples in this study.

The algorithm idea is to assume that the data sets of different clusters conform to different probability density distributions, and the area with high sample density corresponds to the center of the cluster. With the wide application of hospital information system, especially the popularity of the meanshift algorithm in the outpatient system, it has greatly improved the efficiency of medical staff. Medical imaging refers to the technology and process of obtaining internal tissue images of the human body or a certain part of the human body in a noninvasive manner for medical treatment or medical research. It contains the following two relatively independent research directions: medical imaging system and medical image processing. In this paper, we expect to improve the mining ability of medical image information with the help of the meanshift algorithm based on the key technology of the medical image intelligent mining algorithm. This paper proposes a method to enhance image feature extraction and data mining and how to apply relevant analysis rules for mining. Applying this integrated algorithm to extract simplified rules is more beneficial to people’s understanding than the raw data and helps doctors quickly understand the patient’s condition.

A rapid, effective, and reliable method for the simultaneous detection of 20 neonicotinoids and their metabolites in infant foods has been developed using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS). To improve the accuracy and precision of the method, different extraction solvents, extraction methods, and adsorbents were evaluated to achieve a better recovery and clean-up effect. Under optimized conditions, the samples were extracted with acetic acid acidified acetonitrile/ethyl acetate by ultrasonication, and then were cleaned with reduced graphene oxide@Fe3O4 (rGO@Fe3O4) and primary and secondary amine (PSA) through a QuEChERS step. During the Ming Dynasty, China and Korea exchanged frequently and recorded a large amount of written information, which is of great value for understanding the culture of that time. The large amount of data makes it difficult to conduct quantitative analysis by researchers, which makes the analysis limited. This paper carries out a research on the cognition and analysis method of Chinese and Korean envoys to foreign cultures in Ming Dynasty based on big data analysis technology. Based on the literature research, this paper determines the ontology model establishment method to efficiently detect the written records of Chinese and Korean envoys in Ming Dynasty. The established ontology model and the improved clustering analysis method can improve the efficiency of data detection, reduce the error of data detection, and provide data basis for the research of this paper. According to the technology of big data analysis, this paper analyzes the focus and status class of Chinese and Korean envoys in Ming Dynasty and analyzes cognition of the Chinese and Korean envoys for the foreign culture. The results show that the envoys of the Chinese and Korean pay different attention to the foreign culture due to their different cognition of the foreign culture, compared with Ming Dynasty envoys, Korean envoys paid 15.3 percent less attention to geography, 19.7 percent more to history, 11.7 percent more to people, and 16 percent less to customs. This reflects the two envoys’ different perceptions of the foreign culture. And the status class of the envoys exacerbates this difference. In the early Ming Dynasty, the creative diversity of Ming envoys was far lower than that of Korean envoys. As time went by, the creative diversity of Ming envoys increased. The results provide support for further understanding of Chinese and Korean culture and their relationship in Ming Dynasty.

This paper developed a mixed multinomial probit (MMNP) model with alternative error specification and random coefficients (for both generic variables and personal attributes) to accommodate flexible covariance structure and taste variation. The MMNP model can be efficiently estimated with analytic approximations of multivariate normal cumulative distribution functions, which avoid defects of simulation-based integration in the mixed multinomial logit (MMNL) model. The integral dimension of the MMNL model increases as random coefficients increase, but it only depends on the number of available alternatives in the MMNP model. Simulation experiments and empirical analysis of Shanghai commuters’ mode choice behavior were undertaken to examine the performance of MMNP models. Both simulation results and empirical results show that MMNP models can well accommodate flexible covariance structures and taste variation reflected through random coefficients being associated with both generic and personal variables. Empirical results indicate that the MMNP model performs better than traditional discrete choice models, such as the multinomial logit, the cross-nested logit, MMNL, and multinomial probit models. Random coefficients of “in-vehicle time of car” and “number of companions” indicate taste heterogeneity and the identifiability of random coefficients associated with both generic and personal attributes. Pairwise positive correlations between car/taxi, bus/metro, and bus/bus and metro are to be expected. However, the positive correlation between the car and metro modes may be unique to the Chinese city, Shanghai, because of the developed metro system. Unequal error variances reflect heterogeneities in unspecified factors in commute modes’ utilities. The MMNP model will offer an alternative efficient way to accommodate taste heterogeneity and flexible error covariance structure in discrete choice models. Compared with the MMNL model, the MMNP model can accommodate more random coefficients without increasing computational complexity.

Predicting rail transit passenger flow is crucial for modifying the metro schedule. To increase prediction accuracy, a model is proposed that combines long short-term memory (LSTM) with single spectrum analysis (SSA). Firstly, a stepwise decomposition sampling (SDS) strategy based on SSA progressive decomposition is proposed as a solution to the data leaking issue in traditional sequence decomposition. Then, based on this strategy, the passenger flow time series with complex features is decomposed into a relatively single trend and fluctuation component. Finally, the LSTM network is employed to perform short-term predictions on each component separately. The predicted value of each component is accumulated to obtain the original passenger flow’ predicted result. The example shows that, compared with the single LSTM and other hybrid models, the proposed method offers a greater overall prediction accuracy in the experimental days, and the method has specific applicability.

Liquid oxygen chill-down in a vertical exit-contracted pipe was investigated experimentally. The wall temperatures were recorded in detail to describe the filling and chill-down process of the experimental section. Two quenching fronts, the exit one and the inlet one, were detected, and their propagations were found. Results show that the chill-down process is controlled mainly by the formation and propagation of quenching front, which are determined by the pressure level. With the increase of pressure, the roles of both propagation of quenching front and inlet quenching front undergo decreasing. On the vertical section, the effect of circumferential position was discussed in detail and the dominant point was identified, which determines the boiling transition time of the dominated points on the current cross-section. Based on the experimental data, two correlations were suggested for dominant point and dominated points, respectively, to predict heat flux on Leidenfrost, heat transfer coefficient on Leidenfrost, and critical heat flux. One equation was approved to predict heat transfer coefficient on critical heat flux point for both sorts of points. All of these correlations could produce reliable predictions.

Abstract Camellia nitidissima Chi (CNC) is a famous medicinal and edible plant with the name of “Tea for Longevity” in Guangxi province of China. In present study, we determined the protective effect of extract from CNC leaves on H2O2‐induced cell injury and its underlying mechanisms in human neuroblastoma (SH‐SY5Y) cells. The ethyl acetate fraction of CNC leaves (CLE, 50–200 μg/ml) treatment significantly increased the cell viability of H2O2‐treated SH‐SY5Y cells and reduced the leakage of LDH in a reversed “U”‐shape manner. It was confirmed by Hoechst 33,342 staining that CLE attenuated H2O2‐induced apoptosis in SH‐SY5Y cells. The CLE (100 and 150 μg/ml) treatment significantly relieved H2O2‐induced oxidative stress by decreasing intracellular ROS level, and increasing the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT). Western blot analysis demonstrated that the CLE treatment reserved H2O2‐induced decrease of pCREB (Ser133) expression, and its downstream protein BDNF. In addition, 37 phenolic compounds in CLE were identified by UPLC‐TOF MS/MS, and the main active phytochemicals seemed to be catechins, quercetin, kaempferol, and their derivatives. In conclusion, the data analysis showed that the neuroprotective effect of CNC leaves might be achieved via synergistically boosting endogenous antioxidant defenses and neurotrophic signaling pathway. These results suggest that CNC leaves are valuable resources for functional foods and beverages.

Abstract Aim Nurses are teachers to their patients and need to know best practices for diverse families living with dementia. Little is known about Hispanic beliefs around dementia knowledge and self‐efficacy that may have an impact on the learning situation. Design A pre‐/postresearch design was used in this intervention study with a baseline assessment of dementia knowledge and caregiver self‐efficacy and a reassessment at training completion. Methods Investigation of education training with two caregiver groups caring for persons with dementia: Caucasian and Hispanic. Convenience sample consisted of 567 Caucasians and 104 Hispanic dementia caregivers. Groups received training in their primary language accompanied by a training book (Dealing with Dementia Guide) also in the primary language. Results Dementia knowledge and caregiver self‐efficacy increased in both groups with the Hispanic group demonstrating significantly greater increase in self‐efficacy. The Caucasian group had a significantly greater increase in the dementia knowledge compared with the Hispanic group.

Abstract Prediction of early postoperative recurrence is of great significance for follow‐up treatment. However, there are few studies available that focus on high‐risk factors of early postoperative recurrence or even the definition the exact time of early recurrence for hilar cholangiocarcinoma. Thus, we aimed to examine the optimal cut‐off value for defining the early in patients with R0 resection of hilar cholangiocarcinoma and to investigate prognostic factors associated with early recurrence. Two hundred and fifty‐eight patients with R0 resection of hilar cholangiocarcinoma between 2000 and 2015 were included. The minimum P value approach was used to define the optimal cut‐off of early recurrence. The prognostic factors associated with early recurrence were investigated. The optimal cut‐off value for dividing patients into early and non‐early recurrence groups after R0 resection of hilar cholangiocarcinoma was 12 months. Sixty‐two patients were recorded as early recurrence, and the remaining 196 patients were labeled as non‐early recurrence. Multivariate logistic regression analysis indicated lymph node metastasis (OR = 2.756, 95% CI 1.409‐5.393; P = 0.003), poor differentiation (OR = 1.653; 95% CI 1.040‐2.632; P = 0.034), increased postoperative CA 19‐9 levels (OR = 1.965, 95% CI 1.282‐3.013; P = 0.002), neutrophil‐to‐lymphocyte ratio > 3.41 (OR = 5.125, 95% CI 2.419‐10.857; P 60 years (OR = 2.018, 95% CI 1.032‐3.947; P = 0.040) were independent determinants of early and non‐early recurrence. The time scale in accelerated decay is essential for studying the durability of reinforced concrete (RC) structures exposed to the chloride corrosion environment. An accelerated corrosion test (ACT) was carried out on RC specimens were conducted under different chloride concentrations and applied voltages, with the information of steel measured. A novel prediction model of the complete corrosion process is proposed to evaluate the time correlation between accelerated decay and natural corrosion. The corrosion process of RC is divided into two stages: corrosion initial stage and corrosion stage of reinforcement. For the first stage, the coefficient of circular section members is presented. For the second stage, the accelerated factor of the test for the natural environment is proposed based on the Arrhenius-type and Faraday’s law. It is calculated by making regressions among some values of parameters, while moving to natural corrosion are extrapolating. The accelerating effect of applied voltages increases in the low-chloride environment, which is better than that in the high-chloride environment. This study provides calibration of the time scale for laboratory tests to analyze the performance of RC structures after corrosion.

The accuracy of Fresh Tea Sprouts Detection (FTSD) is not high enough, which has become a big bottleneck in the field of vision-based automatic tea picking technology. In order to improve the detection performance, we rethink the process of FTSD. Meanwhile, motivated by the multispectral image processing, we find that more input information can lead to a better detection result. With this in mind, a novel Fresh Tea Sprouts Detection method via Image Enhancement and Fusion Single-Shot Detector (FTSD-IEFSSD) is proposed in this paper. Firstly, we obtain an enhanced image via RGB-channel-transform-based image enhancement algorithm, which uses the original fresh tea sprouts color image as the input. The enhanced image can provide more input information, where the contrast in the fresh tea sprouts area is increased and the background area is decreased. Then, the enhanced image and color image is used in the detection subnetwork with the backbone of ResNet50 separately. We also use the multilayer semantic fusion and scores fusion to further improve the detection accuracy. The strategy of tea sprouts shape-based default boxes is also included during the training. The experimental results show that the proposed method has a better performance on FTSD than the state-of-the-art methods.

Objective. To identify markers that predict the progression to hepatitis B virus-associated acute-on-chronic liver failure (HBV-ACLF). Methods. We recruited 125 patients with chronic hepatitis B (CHB) between September 2013 and March 2017. During hospitalization, 25 patients progressed to LF and were classified as the LF group, while the remaining 100 patients were classified as the non-LF (NLF) group. We compared the kinetic changes in clinical and immune indicators including age, total bilirubin level, prothrombin time, model for end-stage liver disease score, interleukin (IL)-6, IL-8, and IL-10 cytokine levels, and number of T helper 17 and regulatory T cells between groups to determine their association with progression to HBV-ACLF. The prognostic value of clinical and immune indicators was determined using the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) value. Results. Cox regression analysis suggested that the plasma IL-6 level could predict CHB progression to HBV-ACLF (relative risk = 1.082, 95% confidence interval: 1.006–1.164; P=0.034). The AUC value, sensitivity, and specificity of baseline IL-6 level for predicting HBV-ACLF were 82.63%, 83.3%, and 82.9%, respectively (P=0.001). Conclusion. A high plasma IL-6 level in CHB patients could be an early biomarker for HBV-ACLF.
