Although gender equality is a global goal, significant disparity remains between men and women. Benevolent sexism (BS) is widespread and contributes to the maintenance of the gender gap. To reduce BS, many previous studies have implemented long-term intervention programmes. In contrast, we posit that it is necessary to reduce BS efficiently through simpler methods. This study aimed to reduce participants' BS endorsement by presenting experimental vignettes regarding (a) the harm of BS against women and (b) the pervasiveness of BS. An online experiment was conducted with male and female Japanese participants (n = 816). The results showed that the main effect of presenting the harm of BS against women was significant only among female participants. However, neither the main effect of presenting the pervasiveness of BS nor the interaction between presenting harm and pervasiveness were found. We suggested strategies to reduce BS, especially when endorsed by men. Our experimental manipulation can be conducted in a short time and on many participants simultaneously. More empirical studies aimed at reducing BS should be conducted in the future., (© 2024 The Author(s). Background: To date, research has not determined the optimal procedure for adjuvant androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) in patients with locally advanced prostate cancer (PCa) treated for 6 months with neoadjuvant ADT and external-beam radiation therapy (EBRT)., Methods: A multicenter, randomized, phase 3 trial enrolled 303 patients with locally advanced PCa between 2001 and 2006. Participants were treated with neoadjuvant ADT for 6 months. Then, 280 patients whose prostate-specific antigen levels were less than pretreatment levels and less than 10 ng/mL were randomized. All 280 participants were treated with 72 Gy of EBRT in combination with adjuvant ADT for 8 months. Thereafter, participants were assigned to long-term ADT (5 years in all; arm 1) or intermittent ADT (arm 2). The primary endpoint was modified biochemical relapse-free survival (bRFS) with respect to nonmetastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (nmCRPC) progression, clinical relapse, or any cause of death., Results: The median follow-up time after randomization was 8.2 years. Among the 136 and 144 men assigned to trial arms 1 and 2, respectively, 24 and 30 progressed to nmCRPC or clinical relapse, and 5 and 6 died of PCa. The 5-year modified bRFS rates were 84.8% and 82.8% in trial arms 1 and 2, respectively (hazard ratio, 1.132; 95% confidence interval, 0.744-1.722)., Conclusions: Although modified bRFS data did not demonstrate noninferiority for arm 2, intermittent adjuvant ADT after EBRT with 14 months of neoadjuvant and short-term adjuvant ADT is a promising treatment strategy, especially in a population of responders after 6 months of ADT for locally advanced PCa., (© 2020 American Cancer Society.)

Background: The role and impact of radiation therapy (RT) on the development of herpes zoster (HZ) has not been well studied. The objective of this study was to investigate the association between RT and HZ., Methods: A propensity score-matched, retrospective cohort study was conducted using institutional cancer registry data and medical records from 2011 to 2015. The risk of developing HZ in the RT and non-RT groups was compared using a Cox proportional hazards model. Associations also were explored between the RT field and the anatomic location of HZ in patients who developed HZ after RT. The expected number of HZ events within the radiation field was calculated according to the RT received by each patient; then, this number was compared with the observed number of in-field events., Results: Of 17,655 patients, propensity score matching yielded 4350 pairs; of these, 3891 pairs were eligible for comparison. The cumulative incidence of HZ in the RT group (vs the non-RT group) during the first 5 years after the index date was 2.1% (vs 0.7%) at 1 year, 3.0% (vs 1.0%) at 2 years, 3.4% (vs 1.3%) at 3 years, 4.1% vs 1.7% at 4 years, and 4.4% vs 1.8% at 5 years. The RT group showed a significantly higher risk of HZ than the non-RT group (hazard ratio, 2.59, 95% CI, 1.84-3.66). In the 120 patients who developed HZ after RT, HZ events were observed significantly more frequently within the RT field than expected (74 vs 43.8 events; P < .001)., Conclusions: Patients with cancer who received RT showed a significantly higher risk of HZ, which was commonly observed within the radiation field., (© 2020 American Cancer Society.)

Background: This study sought to evaluate the toxicity and efficacy of carbon ion radiotherapy (C-ion RT) for locally advanced adenocarcinoma of the uterine cervix in a phase 1/2 clinical trial., Methods: The treatment consisted of whole-pelvic irradiation of 36.0 gray equivalents (GyE) in 12 fractions and local boost with dose escalation from 26.4 to 38.4 GyE in 8 fractions. The dose escalation was performed with careful observation of acute normal tissue responses. Total dose to the cervical tumor was 62.4 to 74.4 GyE in 20 fractions., Results: Between April 1998 and February 2010, 58 patients were treated with C-ion RT in this clinical trial. The number of patients with stage IIB, IIIB, and IVA disease were 20, 35, and 3, respectively. Median tumor size was 5.5 cm (range, 3.0-11.8 cm). Twenty-seven patients had pelvic lymph node metastases. The median follow-up period was 38 months. All patients completed the treatment schedule. Grade 2 or higher late toxicity was found in 8 patients: 5 with bladder and 2 with small intestine grade 2 toxicities, and 1 patient had grade 4 rectal complication, which was surgically salvaged. The 5-year local control rate, local control rate including salvage surgery, and overall survival rate in all cases were 54.5%, 68.2%, and 38.1%, respectively., Conclusions: Dose escalation of C-ion RT for adenocarcinoma of the uterine cervix was accomplished without severe toxicities except in 1 case. Background: Stereotactic irradiation (STI) has been actively performed using various methods to achieve better local control of Stage I nonsmall cell lung carcinoma (NSCLC) in Japan. The authors retrospectively evaluated results from a Japanese multiinstitutional study., Methods: Patients with Stage I NSCLC (n = 245; median age, 76 years; T1N0M0, n = 155; T2N0M0, n = 90) were treated with hypofractionated high-dose STI in 13 institutions. Stereotactic three-dimensional treatment was performed using noncoplanar dynamic arcs or multiple static ports. A total dose of 18-75 gray (Gy) at the isocenter was administered in 1-22 fractions. The median calculated biologic effective dose (BED) was 108 Gy (range, 57-180 Gy)., Results: During follow-up (median, 24 months; range, 7-78 months), pulmonary complications of National Cancer Institute-Common Toxicity Criteria Grade > 2 were observed in only 6 patients (2.4%). Local progression occurred in 33 patients (14.5%), and the local recurrence rate was 8.1% for BED > or = 100 Gy compared with 26.4% for < 100 Gy (P < 0.05). The 3-year overall survival rate of medically operable patients was 88.4% for BED > or = 100 Gy compared with 69.4% for < 100 Gy (P < 0.05)., Conclusions: Hypofractionated high-dose STI with BED < 150 Gy was feasible and beneficial for curative treatment of patients with Stage I NSCLC. For all treatment methods and schedules, local control and survival rates were better with BED > or = 100 Gy compared with < 100 Gy. Background: Maxillary sinus carcinomas usually are locally advanced. A wide variety of modalities, including surgery, radiation therapy, and intraarterial chemotherapy, alone or in combination, have been used. However, there is still much controversy with regard to the optimum treatment., Methods: From 1972 to 1986, 108 patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the maxillary sinus were treated at the Department of Radiology, University of Tokyo Hospital. From 1972 to 1974 (the first period), the treatment consisted of operation for reduction of tumor volume, daily cleaning of the maxillary antrum, 20 Gy of postoperative radiation therapy, and intraarterial infusion of 1500 mg of 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) and 3000 mg of 5-bromodeoxyuridine (BUdR). From 1975 to 1979 (the second period), the radiation dose was reduced to 10 Gy, and intraarterial infusion of 5-FU and BUdR was not performed. Surgery for reduction of tumor volume and daily cleaning of the antrum played a major role in this period. From 1980 to 1982 (the third period), daily cleaning of the antrum was not performed. Instead, the dose of radiation was increased to 50-60 Gy. From 1983 to 1986 (the fourth period), more extensive surgery to resect the tumor en bloc was introduced. The radiation dose was increased to 70 Gy. Intraarterial infusion of 3750 mg of 5-FU and 120 mg of cisplatin also was administered., Results: The 5-year survival rate was 46% in the first period, 24% in the second period, 7.2% in the third period, and 53% in the fourth period. In the third period, there were more cases in which death resulted from a cause other than local failure, such as distant metastasis, pneumonia, or secondary primary cancer. Since 1984, we planned treatment with computed tomography (CT) and used the linear accelerator with a multileaf collimator to treat patients with an irregular field of irradiation. These have made it possible to administer radiation therapy in doses as high as 70 Gy without severe complications and improve the survival rate, especially for T4 disease., Conclusions: Radiation plays an important role in sterilizing malignant cells that cannot be removed by operation. The dose of radiation should be determined according to the volume of residual tumor. Careful treatment planning is required to irradiate the tumor adequately and reduce complications.
