The echocardiographic assessment of diastolic function in the context of atrial fibrillation (AF) has been controversial and can be challenging and labor-intensive. We aimed to assess the actual practice of diastolic evaluation in AF in our community hospital echocardiography laboratory and to improve clinical performance by a quality improvement project.We reviewed 244 echocardiograms in patients with AF at the time of echocardiography from November 2019 to November 2020 (pre-intervention phase). We classified cases into a complete versus incomplete evaluation group according to the completeness of diastolic parameter measurement. After an educational intervention, we reviewed 68 echocardiograms in patients with AF from August 2021 to October 2021 (post-intervention phase).Our results demonstrated an improvement in a complete diastolic assessment from 69% to 91% after intervention (p .001). In the pre-intervention phase, the four parameters (mitral inflow pulsed wave Doppler image, left atrium volume index, mitral annular tissue Doppler image [TDI], and tricuspid regurgitation Vmax), mitral annular TDI was not acquired in 71 out of 244 cases (29.1%) and those cases were classified as incomplete evaluation group. Interestingly, in the pre-intervention phase, 57 out of 162 cases (35%) with preserved EF (≥50%) received significantly more incomplete diastolic evaluation than 14 out of 82 patients (17%) with reduced EF (50%) (p = .004). There were no statistically significant differences in age, BMI, the reason for requesting echocardiography, and patient level of care between the complete and incomplete evaluation groups. In the post-intervention phase, completeness of diastolic measurement in AF was significantly improved compared to the pre-intervention phase (29% vs. 9%, p .001, respectively).A quality improvement project effectively improved the clinical performance of diastolic evaluation in AF in our community echocardiography laboratory. After the intervention, we decreased an incomplete evaluation from 30% to 9%. More efforts should be needed to increase awareness and familiarity in evaluating diastolic function in AF.

While numerous virtual/remote simulation-based learning (SBL) modules were implemented due to the COVID-19 pandemic, limited data on their effectiveness are available. This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of a remote SBL module for periodontal instrumentation compared to traditional onsite SBL modules.Calibrated faculty members have instructed in all modules. Synchronous remote SBL activities using a secure videoconferencing application, which replaced onsite practices, were conducted in a small group setting in the remote SBL module for the class of 2023. After the class took the onsite second-year practical examination, a set of multiple and logistic regression analyses (N = 389) were conducted to test if the second-year practical examination scores and the passing rates were significantly different between the remote SBL (class of 2023) and onsite SBL I and II (class of 2019 and 2022) groups.Both mean practical examination score and passing rate from the remote SBL group (class of 2023) were significantly higher than those from the onsite SBL II group (class of 2022) when their first-year practical examination scores were not considered (p 0.05). Once the first-year practical examination scores were considered, the remote SBL group was not significantly different from the onsite SBL I and II groups with respect to the mean second-year practical examination score and the passing rate.The proposed remote SBL module achieved the comparable student learning outcomes compared to the onsite SBL modules while it utilized less staff, time, and material expenditure.

Long-term storage of chili pepper powder results in physicochemical and microbiological changes that decrease its commercial value; these changes occur owing to fungal growth and production of off-flavor compounds. Herein, long-term-stored chili pepper powder (LSCPP) and fresh chili pepper powder (FCPP) were analyzed using internal transcribed spacer sequencing and volatile organic compound fingerprinting by headspace capillary-gas chromatography-ion mobility spectrometry. Fungal analysis detected only Xeromyces bisporus with high accuracy in all the analyzed LSCPP samples. However, the proliferation of X. bisporus on nonspecific spots complicated the distinguishing process between the two groups based solely on fungal analysis. Therefore, nine compounds (three ketones, one alcohol, two aldehydes, one ester, one furan, and one sulfur compound) obtained by autoxidation and fungal metabolism were selected as potential markers for distinguishing LSCPP and FCPP. These above-mentioned substances, which were confirmed as off-flavor species owing to "stale" odor, emitted lipid fragrance and were used to successfully distinguish LSCPP from FCPP using principal component analysis and linear discriminant analysis. PRACTICAL APPLICATION: According to the research results, it was possible to discriminate between long-term stored and fresh chili pepper powders using nine VOC markers for quality control in industry. In addition, the fungus generated from long-term storage of chili pepper powder was Xeromyces bisporus, which was confirmed to be safe for intake because it does not form secondary toxic metabolites.

Various evaluation methods for acne severity have been used without standardization, and the diversity of acne outcome measures is an obstacle to the integrated analysis of various acne studies. In this study, we sought to investigate physician-based evaluation methods used in clinical studies of acne vulgaris and to determine differences according to time, region and study design. PubMed was searched for articles on acne published from January 2000 to June 2019 in five dermatology journals: Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, JAMA Dermatology, British Journal of Dermatology, Journal of the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology and Acta Dermato-Venereologica. A total of 186 articles with acne evaluation methods were selected. Among the selected studies, region, study design, type of intervention and the number of subjects were identified and analyzed. Articles from 2010 to 2019 used Investigator Global Assessment (IGA; odds ratio [OR], 5.808; 95% CI, 1.894-17.811) more often and the Leeds technique (OR, 0.282; 95% CI, 0.098-0.812) less often compared with articles from 2000 to 2009. Controlled experimental studies preferred lesion counting (OR, 238.637; 95% CI, 46.795-1216.954), IGA (OR, 9.177; 95% CI, 3.053-27.586) and Leeds Revised Acne Grading System (LRAGS; OR, 10.844; 95% CI, 3.050-38.559) compared with observational studies. North American studies applied lesion counting (OR, 4.573; 95% CI, 1.173-17.836) and IGA (OR, 11.330; 95% CI, 3.487-36.818) more often and LRAGS (OR, 0.171; 95% CI, 0.039-0.758) less often compared with European studies. This study demonstrated the diversity and heterogeneity of acne outcome measures even in highly influential dermatology journals. This is due to the limitations of current methods and suggests the importance of developing a core outcome measure.

Untreated invasive fungal infection is one of the important risk factors affecting the prognosis of pediatric patients with hematologic tumors. Voriconazole (VOR) is the first-line antifungal drug for the treatment of Aspergillus infections. In order to reduce the risk of adverse drug reactions while producing an ideal antifungal effect, therapeutic drug monitoring was performed to maintain the VOR plasma concentration in a range of 1,000-5,500 ng/ml. In the present study, a reliable, accurate, sensitive and quick ultra-high performance liquid chromatograph-tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS) method was developed for the determination of the VOR level. Paclitaxel, a member of the taxane family, exhibits antitumour effects by targeting the microtubules in cancer cells. Recently, oral paclitaxel has been developed to overcome the side effects of intravenous paclitaxel administration in human patients. The objective of this study was to investigate the antitumour effects of oral paclitaxel in vitro and in vivo. Three weeks after inoculation, oral paclitaxel (25 and 50 mg/kg) or saline was administered every week for three consecutive weeks. To explore the underlying mechanism, tumour angiogenesis was examined by immunohistochemistry with an anti-CD31 antibody. Tumour cell apoptosis was detected by Terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase dUTP Nick-End Labeling assay, and cell cycle arrest was confirmed by western blot analysis. Oral paclitaxel treatment of canine melanoma cells exerted mediated antiproliferative effects and mediated cell cycle arrest in vitro. In animal experiments, after oral paclitaxel administration, the average tumour size decreased to approximately 30% of that in the control. Histologically, oral paclitaxel showed anti-angiogenic effects and induced the apoptosis in tumour tissues. Oral paclitaxel also downregulated the intratumoural expression of cyclin D1 and inhibited cell proliferation. The study findings support potential application of oral paclitaxel as a novel chemotherapeutic strategy to treat canine melanoma. This is the first study to investigate the potential of oral paclitaxel as a therapeutic drug against canine tumours.

Considerable attention has been given to the development of robust fermentation processes, but microbial contamination and phage infection remain deadly threats that need to be addressed. In this study, a robust Escherichia coli BL21(DE3) strain was successfully constructed by simultaneously introducing a nitrogen and phosphorus (N&P) system in combination with a CRISPR/Cas9 system. The N&P metabolic pathways were able to express formamidase and phosphite dehydrogenase in the host cell, thus enabled cell growth in auxotrophic 3-(N-morpholino)propanesulfonic acid medium with formamide and phosphite as nitrogen and phosphorus sources, respectively. N&P metabolic pathways also allowed efficient expression of heterologous proteins, such as green fluorescent protein (GFP) and chitinase, while contaminating bacteria or yeast species could hardly survive in this medium. The host strain was further engineered by exploiting the CRISPR/Cas9 system to enhance the resistance against phage attack. The resultant strain was able to grow in the presence of T7 phage at a concentration of up to 2 × 107 plaque-forming units/ml and produce GFP with a yield of up to 30 μg/109 colony-forming units, exhibiting significant advantages over conventional engineered E. coli. This newly engineered, robust E. coli BL21(DE3) strain therefore shows great potential for future applications in industrial fermentation.

Dictyochophyceae (silicoflagellates) are unicellular freshwater and marine algae (Heterokontophyta, stramenopiles). Despite their abundance in global oceans and potential ecological significance, discovered in recent years, neither nuclear nor organellar genomes of representatives of this group were sequenced until now. Here, we present the first complete plastid genome sequences of Dictyochophyceae, obtained from four species: Dictyocha speculum, Rhizochromulina marina, Florenciella parvula and Pseudopedinella elastica. Despite their comparable size and genetic content, these four plastid genomes exhibit variability in their organization: plastid genomes of F. parvula and P. elastica possess conventional quadripartite structure with a pair of inverted repeats, R. marina instead possesses two direct repeats with the same orientation and D. speculum possesses no repeats at all. We also observed a number of unusual traits in the plastid genome of D. speculum, including expansion of the intergenic regions, presence of an intron in the otherwise non-intron-bearing psaA gene, and an additional copy of the large subunit of RuBisCO gene (rbcL), the last of which has never been observed in any plastid genome. We conclude that despite noticeable gene content similarities between the plastid genomes of Dictyochophyceae and their relatives (pelagophytes, diatoms), the number of distinctive features observed in this lineage strongly suggests that additional taxa require further investigation.

Reducing geitonogamy (pollen transfer among flowers within the same plant) has been suggested as a major selective force for plants with multiple flowers. The occurrence of geitonogamy is generally different among flowers within inflorescences; however, no researchers have examined whether plants enlarge their display size without increasing the possibility of geitonogamy by presenting more flowers at positions where they are less likely to be geitonogamously pollinated. We observed that bumblebee pollinators foraged upward within the tower‐shaped inflorescences of protandrous Megacodon stylophorus (C. B. Clarke) Harry Sm. Because M. stylophorus did not strictly bloom bottom‐up, there were substantial frequencies of geitonogamous pollination resulting from upward and horizontal pollen transfer. Although there was a strong correlation between total numbers of flowers plants produced and numbers of flowers presented on single days, proportions of flowers possibly geitonogamously pollinated were weakly correlated with total numbers of flowers. This might have been because plants with more resources enlarged their display size by producing more flowers on lower floors where flowers had a low probability of being geitonogamously pollinated. This study shows that the tower‐shaped inflorescences of M. stylophorus enlarge their size without more cost of geitonogamous mating, suggesting that geitonogamy acts as an important selective agent in the evolution of inflorescence architectures.

GPR40 is one of the most prominent targets for the treatment of type 2 diabetes (T2DM), and has its role in insulin secretion via blood-glucose-dependent manner with a minimum risk of hypoglycemia. In order to discover novel antidiabetics bearing these benefits, we screened various derivatives with two distinct pharmacophores. Both series displayed potent agonistic activities for GPR40 in vitro functional assay. Through additional ADME and in vivo efficacy evaluations, we identified the potent hit candidate 2j as a novel GPR40 agonist.

Aim The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the efficacy of two different exercise types, rhythmic exercise designed from local music and dance (RE) and walking exercise (WE), in terms of exercise participation and physical function changes in older adults over a period of 12 weeks. Methods Exercise participation was assessed through the attendance rate and retention rate, and physical function was evaluated through the Short Physical Performance Battery, static balance test and gait test. Results The RE group showed significantly higher attendance and retention rates; greater improvement in Short Physical Performance Battery scores; and greater improvement in static balance, as compared with the WE. No differences were found between the RE and WE groups in gait parameters. Conclusions The results suggest that RE was more effective than WE in retaining exercise participation and improving physical function in older adults. Geriatr Gerontol Int 2017; 17: 2311–2318.

Degradation of organic carbon stored in permafrost may represent an additional source of atmospheric greenhouse gases (GHGs) in a warming climate. However, there is no clear understanding of how seasonal freeze–thaw affects gas permeability and emission of methane in permafrost soils, in part due to the lack of chemical and physical characterisation of the soils. Here, we report vertical profiles of CO2, CH4 and other soil properties with resolutions of 0.05–0.1 m depth from five soil cores, drilled to 0.9 m depth, in Alaskan permafrost during the early spring of 2013, when the ground was frozen under snow cover. Two cores from tundra and black spruce bog showed sudden increases in methane concentration (up to 416 µmol litre−1soil), indicating excess CH4 trapped in gas-impermeable soil layers during the freezing period. Active-layer cooling in late autumn, producing a frozen surface and relatively warm sub-surface, may have allowed underground microbial activity and facilitated CH4 production, while the upward transport of CH4 was hampered by the frost. Our preliminary results show that estimating annual GHG efflux from permafrost regions can be complicated because of heterogeneous distributions of trapped methane within soil columns. Aim Our objective is to explore key changes in brain functions in relation to minimal hepatic encephalopathy (MHE). We incorporated both resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and arterial spin labeling (ASL) to enhance the detection of MHE. Methods We undertook fMRI scanning for 56 MHE patients and 66 healthy controls. Region functional connectivity was carried out to assess the connectivity status between pairs of regions among 90 brain regions. Additionally, blood flow (BF) status was measured by ASL for all subjects. Spearman's correlation test was implemented to identify any correlation among z-values, results from number connection test type A, and digit symbol tests. Finally, the receiver operating characteristic curve was generated for assessing the accuracy of BF in MHE diagnosis. Results The corresponding functional connectivity was significantly different between MHE and control groups in 15 regions. For MHE patients, BF showed an increasing pattern in regions of interest. Blood flood in the putamen was positively correlated with number connection test type A neuropsychological performance, whereas it was negatively correlated with the digit symbol test. Blood flood in the right putamen showed the highest value of area under the curve with a sensitivity of 85.7% and specificity of 89.4%. Conclusion Connectivity impairment resulting from ganglia-thalamo-cortical circuits may play important roles in mediating the development of MHE patients. An increase in the BF, particularly in the right putamen, may be considered as evidence for the presence of MHE.

Yacon (Smallanthus sonchifolius), a traditional food in the Andean diet, is attracting global attention for its medicinal properties, which are mainly because of its high content of non-digestible oligosaccharides. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the antidepressant-like effects of inulin-type oligosaccharides extracted from yacon (YOs) in behavioral models of depression. Behavioral despair models in mice including the tail suspension test (TST) and the forced swimming test (FST) were used to determine the effects of acute YOs administration. The locomotor activity was also explored to eliminate any false-positive activity. In addition, to further investigate the antidepressant-like effects of subchronic YOs administration, the learned helplessness (LH) paradigm in rats was performed. The results demonstrated that YOs (25, 50, or 100 mg/kg, p.o.) treatment significantly reduced the immobility time in the mouse TST and FST in a U-shaped, dose-dependent manner, and showed no stimulatory effect on the locomotor activity. Furthermore, subchronic YOs (25, 50, or 100 mg/kg, p.o.) treatment significantly reversed the escape deficits in LH rats, including an increased number of escape failures and prolonged escape latency. These findings suggest that the inulin-type oligosaccharides extracted from yacon may be a prospective natural source for antidepressants. Copyright © 2016 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

This paper presents a novel surface coating to resolve the serviceability, stability, compatibility, and dehydrogenation of aluminum hydride (alane) using liquid carbon dioxide as an anti-solvent, dispersant, drying medium, and inert atmosphere. The coated alane sample was characterized by SEM, XPS, XRD, and FT-IR spectroscopy. The coating agent was uniformly applied on the surface of alane and the crystalline phase remained unchanged. The alane molecules became more stable after coating. The thermal stability of alane before and after coating was analyzed by DSC. The enthalpy of the coated alane increased under different heating rates, indicating increased thermal stability. The lower electric spark sensitivity of the coated alane showed improved serviceability and stability. The method developed in this study may be suitable for coating other hydrogen storage and energetic materials.

For achieving a high open-circuit voltage (Voc) in dye-sensitized tandem solar cells, series-connected tandem solar cells were fabricated. In order to optimize series-connected tandem solar cell systems, the current density of the top and bottom cells should be well matched to be identical, and the Voc of each of the cells should also be as high as possible. Furthermore, the top cell should be transparent and the bottom cell should have the longer-wavelength absorption, for utilizing only the light passing through the top cell. This leads to a high Voc. In this study, we report dye-sensitized tandem solar cells having an extremely high Voc using the Co(bpy)32+/3+ (bpy=2,2′-bipyridine) redox couple. Dye-sensitized tandem solar cells employing JK303/HC-A1 with the Co(bpy)32+/3+ redox couple as the top cell and N749/HC-A4 with the I−/I3− redox couple as the bottom cell were shown to have an extremely high Voc of >1.66 V, the highest value for dye-sensitized tandem solar cells reported to date.

In plants, pollination syndromes (the correlated presence of many features of relevance to pollination mode, for instance pollination by a particular animal clade) are a striking feature of plant biodiversity, providing great floral phenotypic diversity (Fenster et al. 2004). Adaptation to a particular animal pollinator provides an explanation for why recently diverged plants can have such extreme differentiation in floral form. One might expect such elaborate adaptations to provide a high degree of pollinator specificity and hence reproductive isolation, but there are many cases where substantial gene flow exists between extreme floral morphs (see Table 1), and the resulting hybrids may be highly fertile. This gene flow provides tremendous opportunities to study the genetics and biology of the pollination syndromes by providing intermediate forms and segregating genotypes. If it is true that pollination syndromes result from adaptation under strong selection, we will expect such flowers to be crucibles of natural selection. If strong selection for particular floral phenotypes can be shown, then this, when coupled with hybridization, will give us one of the most valuable of all experimental systems for evolutionary research: gene flow and selection in balance. In this issue of Molecular Ecology, the paper of Milano et al. (2016) delivers this. It shows that in populations of the Ipomopsis aggregata complex, gene flow between pollination morphs is high and selection to stabilize those morphs is also high: a probable case of gene flow–selection balance.

We developed single-layer (caterpillar pattern) type touch screen panel(TSP) using high conductive and transparent hybrid (Oxide/Metal/Oxide(OMO)) electrodes for the issue. Through our study, the OMO electrode shows the sheet resistance of 5.5 ohm/sq and transmittance of 90.1% at 550nm with low haze (< 1). We successfully fabricated 7 & 10 inch single-layer TSP using hybrid electrodes on flexible and glass based substrates. 7 & 10 inch single-layer TSPs showed multi-touches with good linearity, accuracy, and high sensitivity.

Low-cycle fatigue tests were conducted on the directionally solidified nickel-base super- alloy DZ125 at 850°C in the unexposed and exposed specimens for 2, 15, 25 and 50h in hot corrosion environment. The pre-exposed specimen exhibited a lower life than unex- posed specimens. Fatigue cracks in the unexposed specimens are initiated from defects near the surface, while the cracks of exposed specimens preferentially occur on the sur- face. Hot corrosion damage in fatigue life was found to be associated with the reduction of the bearing area. A novel life prediction methodology based on continuum damage mechanics was proposed to predict the experimentally observed decrease in low-cycle fa- tigue life with increasing prior exposure time.

Establishing the binding topology of structural zinc ions in proteins is an essential part of their structure determination by NMR spectroscopy. Using 113Cd NMR experiments with 113Cd‐substituted samples is a useful approach but has previously been limited mainly to very small protein domains. Here we used 113Cd NMR spectroscopy during structure determination of Bud31p, a 157‐residue yeast protein containing an unusual Zn3Cys9 cluster, demonstrating that recent hardware developments make this approach feasible for significantly larger systems.

Objective Staging systems applied to medullary thyroid cancer (MTC) rely on initial clinical and pathological features and do not consider the response to treatment. To determine whether MTC staging can be improved by incorporating the first postoperative calcitonin measurement. Patients and measurements Eighty-five patients being monitored for MTC (median follow-up 5 years) were retrospectively classified according to both the American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) and the proposed combined risk stratification system (low, intermediate and high risk), which incorporates the first postoperative calcitonin measurement, using the outcomes no evidence of disease (NED), biochemical evidence of disease, structurally identifiable disease and death. Results Ninety per cent of AJCC I patients were classified as NED at final follow-up. When we added a postoperative calcitonin measurement, 95% low-risk patients were classified as NED at final follow-up. AJCC stages I and IV were associated, respectively, with no occurrence and a high rate (63%) of structurally identifiable disease. Stages II and III yielded similar predictions of structurally identifiable disease, 13% and 14%, respectively. When we included the postoperative calcitonin level, the patients with structural evidence of disease included none from the low-risk group, 10% from the intermediate group and 63% from the high-risk group. The proportion of variance explained analysis (PVE) was better for the combined risk stratification system (54%) than for the AJCC system alone (32%). Conclusion Including the first postoperative calcitonin measurement with the anatomical staging system can better predict the clinical outcome of patients with MTC and refine the follow-up of these patients.

Novel cyclic olefin polymers (cops) with excellent transparency and high glass-transition temperature (t-g) synthesized from bulky norbornene derivative, exo-1,4,4a,9,9a,10-hexahydro-9,10(1',2')-benzeno-l,4-methanoanthracene (hbmn), and cis-cyclooctene (coe) by ring-opening metathesis copolymerization utilizing the first-generation grubbs catalyst, rucl2(pcy3)(2)(chph), and subsequent hydrogenation was reported herein. to get amorphous copolymers, it was of great importance to control the feed ratios and the polymerization time for gradient copolymerization. all these copolymers showed very high t(g)s (141.1-201.2 degrees c), which varied with the content of hbmn. the films of the gradient copolymers with only one t-g were highly transparent. on the contrary, all the block copolymers synthesized through sequential addition showed two thermal transition temperatures, t-g and melt temperature (t-m), and the films of these block copolymers were opaque. the mechanical performances of the cops were also investigated. it is the first report that transparent cop could be prepared from bulky norbornene derivative and monocyclic olefin. Novel cyclic olefin polymers (COPs) derived from bulky cyclic olefin, exo-1,4,4a,9,9a,10-hexahydro-9,10(1',2')-benzeno-1,4-methanoanthracene (HBMN), with high glass transition temperature (T-g), excellent thermal stability, high transparency, and improved mechanical performance, have been achieved by ring-opening metathesis polymerization and subsequent hydrogenation. The "first-generation Grubbs" catalyst, RuCl2(P-Cy-3)(2)(CHPh) (Cy = cyclohexyl) (G1), displays very high activity for homo/copolymerization with complete conversion. Homopolymer of the HBMN after complete hydrogenation showed a highest T-g of 223.6 degrees C. Copolymerization of HBMN with tricyclo[4.3.0.12,5]deca-3-ene or 5-n-hexylnorbornene was also carried out. These two series of COPs were characterized by gel permeation chromatography, nuclear magnetic resonance, differential scanning calorimetry, and thermogravimetric analysis. The T-g of the resulted COPs linearly increased with HBMN content, which is easily controlled by changing feed ratios. The tensile test indicates that these copolymers have good mechanical performance as all these copolymers show a higher strain at break compared with commercial products (TOPAS (R)). BACKGROUND Synthetic preservatives have been consistently used to maintain the quality of food products. However, the degree of danger to human health cannot be ignored. In this study, the antimicrobial activities of Citrullus colocynthis fruits and 4-methylquinoline analogues were investigated to develop natural preservatives against foodborne bacteria. RESULTS Antimicrobial activities of the methanol extract and five fractions derived from C. colocynthis fruits were evaluated against five foodborne bacteria. The chloroform fraction possessed strong activities against five foodborne bacteria. 4-Methylquinoline was isolated by chromatographic analyses. To establish the structure–activity relationships, the antimicrobial activities of 4-methylquinoline analogues (2-hydroxyquinoline, 4-hydroxyquinoline, 6-hydroxyquinoline, 2-methylquinoline, 6-methyquinoline, 8-methylquinoline and 2-methyl-8-hydroxyquinoline) were tested against food-borne bacteria. When employing the agar diffusion method, 2-methyl-8-hydroxyquinoline was found to have potent activities against the five foodborne bacteria. In terms of minimum bactericidal concentration or minimum inhibitory concentration, 2-methyl-8-hydroxyquinoline had significantly higher antimicrobial activity against the five foodborne bacteria. CONCLUSION Citrullus colocynthis fruits and 4-methylquinoline analogues could be useful for the development of eco-friendly food supplemental agents and pharmaceuticals. © 2014 Society of Chemical Industry
