Ezrin protein is involved in the interaction of actin cytoskeleton with membrane receptors such as CD44. It regulates plasma membrane dynamics and intracellular signaling. Coxiella burnetii, the etiologic agent of Q fever, is internalized into host cell through a poorly characterized molecular mechanism. Here we analyzed the role of ezrin and CD44 in the C. burnetii internalization by HeLa cells. The knockdown of ezrin and CD44 inhibited the bacterial uptake. Interestingly, at early stages of C. burnetii internalization, ezrin was recruited to the cell membrane fraction and phosphorylated. Moreover, the overexpression of non-phosphorylatable and phosphomimetic ezrin mutants decreased and increased the bacterial entry, respectively. A decrease in the internalization of C. burnetii was observed by the overexpression of CD44 truncated forms containing the intracellular or the extracellular domains. Interestingly, the CD44 mutant was unable to interact with ERM proteins decreased the bacterial internalization. These findings demonstrate the participation of ezrin in the internalization process of C. burnetii in non-phagocytic cells. Additionally, we present evidence that CD44 receptor would be involved in that process.

The spreading of its associated probability density (i.e., the Rakhmanov density) over the support interval has been quantified, beyond the dispersion measures (moments around the origin, variance), by the algebraic Lq-norms (Shannon and Renyi entropies) and the monotonic complexity-like measures of Cramer-Rao, Fisher-Shannon, and LMC (LopezRuiz, Mancini, and Calbet) types. These quantities, however, have been often determined in an analytically highbrow, non-handy way; specially when the degree or the parameters oa, ss THORN are large. In this work, we determine in a simple, compact form the leading term of the entropic and complexity-like properties of the Jacobi polynomials in the two extreme situations: (n!8; fixed a, ss) and (a!8; fixed n, ss). In this investigation, the purified sulphoraphane from broccoli seed meal was evaluated in a range of 5–400 μg mL⁻¹ against Escherichia coli. The results showed that levels above 200 μg mL⁻¹ can inhibit 100% growth of 10⁶ CFU mL⁻¹ up to 5 h and cause a deformation of sigmoid behaviour in the growth kinetics, and even the bacterial population is reduced. On the other hand, low sulphoraphane levels such as 5–25 μg mL⁻¹ also have effects on the bacterium, such as the decrease in the maximum specific growth rate and the loss of ability to adjust to a growth model when maintained in isothermal conditions. In addition, sulphoraphane has an effect on swimming motility and swarming motility in semi‐solid medium. The interaction of natural sulphoraphane–E. coli and the effect in the short periods can draw attention in research on food science and technology.

The entropic uncertainty measures of the multidimensional hydrogenic states quantify the multiple facets of the spatial delocalization of the electronic probability density of the system. The Shannon entropy is the most adequate uncertainty measure to quantify the electronic spreading and to mathematically formalize the Heisenberg uncertainty principle, partially because it does not depend on any specific point of their multidimensional domain of definition. In this work the radial and angular parts of the Shannon entropies for all the discrete stationary states of the multidimensional hydrogenic systems are obtained from first principles; that is, they are given in terms of the states' principal and magnetic hyperquantum numbers $(n,\mu_1,\mu_2,\ldots,\mu_{D-1})$, the system's dimensionality $D$ and the nuclear charge $Z$ in an analytical, compact form. Explicit expressions for the total Shannon entropies are given for the quasi-spherical states, which conform a relevant class of specific states of the $D$-dimensional hydrogenic system characterized by the hyperquantum numbers $\mu_1=\mu_2\ldots=\mu_{D-1}=n-1$, including the ground state.

The Shannon entropy, the desequilibrium and their generalizations (Renyi and Tsallis entropies) of the three-dimensional single-particle systems in a spherically symmetric potential V(r) can be decomposed into angular and radial parts. The radial part depends on the analytical form of the potential, but the angular part does not. In this article, we first calculate the angular entropy of any central potential by means of two analytical procedures. Then, we explicitly find the dominant term of the radial entropy for the highly energetic (i.e., Rydberg) stationary states of the oscillator-like systems. The angular and radial contributions to these entropic measures are analytically expressed in terms of the quantum numbers which characterize the corresponding quantum states and, for the radial part, the oscillator strength. In the latter case, we use some recent powerful results of the information theory of the Laguerre polynomials and spherical harmonics which control the oscillator-like wavefunctions.

The relative structural location of a selected group of 27 sulfonamide-like molecules in a chemical space defined by three information theory quantities (Shannon entropy, Fisher information, and disequilibrium) is discussed. This group is composed of 15 active bacteriostatic molecules, 11 theoretically designed ones, and para-aminobenzoic acid. This endeavor allows molecules that share common chemical properties through the molecular backbone, but with significant differences in the identity of the chemical substituents, which might result in bacteriostatic activity, to be structurally classified and characterized. This is performed by quantifying the structural changes on the electron density distribution due to different functional groups and number of electrons. The macroscopic molecular features are described by means of the entropy-like notions of spatial electronic delocalization, order, and uniformity. Hence, an information theory three-dimensional space (IT-3D) emerges that allows molecules with common properties to be gathered. This space witnesses the biological activity of the sulfonamides. Some structural aspects and information theory properties can be associated, as a result of the IT-3D chemical space, with the bacteriostatic activity of these molecules. Most interesting is that the active bacteriostatic molecules are more similar to para-aminobenzoic acid than to the theoretically designed analogues.

In this work we undertake a pioneer information-theoretical analysis of 18 selected amino acids extracted from a natural protein, bacteriorhodopsin (1C3W). The conformational structures of each amino acid are analyzed by use of various quantum chemistry methodologies at high levels of theory: HF, M062X and CISD(Full). The Shannon entropy, Fisher information and disequilibrium are determined to grasp the spatial spreading features of delocalizability, order and uniformity of the optimized structures. These three entropic measures uniquely characterize all amino acids through a predominant information-theoretic quality scheme (PIQS), which gathers all chemical families by means of three major spreading features: delocalization, narrowness and uniformity. This scheme recognizes four major chemical families: aliphatic (delocalized), aromatic (delocalized), electro-attractive (narrowed) and tiny (uniform). All chemical families recognized by the existing energy-based classifications are embraced by this entropic scheme. Finally, novel chemical patterns are shown in the information planes associated with the PIQS entropic measures.

Quantum entanglement features exhibited by the reaction path of some selected elementary chemical reactions: hydrogenic abstraction, nucleophilic hydrogenic substitution, three-atom insertion reaction of silylene into hydrogen, and the cycloaddition of cyclopentadiene into anhydride maleic are investigated in this work. The phenomenological behavior of these reactions is described by two of the fundamental descriptors of the molecular densities, the atomic charges, and the electric potentials, to associate the maximum entangled transition state (METS) to the concurrent processes of the chemical reactions. It is found that the METS characterizes the transition state of symmetrical reactions; and for nonsymmetrical ones, it features a new critical point along the intrinsic reaction path. In addition, benchmark calculations of the relevant quantitative entanglement measures for the critical points of these reactions are reported. Fil: Esquivel, Rodolfo O.. An information-theoretical analysis of the SN2 exchange reaction for CH3Cl + F− is performed in both position and momentum spaces by means of the following functionals of the one-particle density: Shannon entropy (S), disequilibrium (D), and Fisher information (I). We have shown that the information-theoretical characterization of the chemical course of the reaction is in complete agreement with its phenomenological behavior in the passage from reactants to products. These kinds of analyses permit to reveal all the concomitant physical processes involved in the reaction: charge transferring, bond breaking, electrostatic equalization, bond forming, and electrostatic repulsion. It is worth emphasizing that information theory concepts, such as localization, order, and uniformity, offers a unique advantage as a complementary reactivity theory to provide a full description of chemical reactions, revealing chemical aspects of reactions which are not present in the energy-based interpretative approach. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Marine algae are known to provide habitats for a wide range of marine organisms. Populations of marine epiphytal invertebrates are generalists and are less adapted to live in only one macroalga species. However, there are some examples of local adaptation and, in particular, amphipods have shown strong host specificity. Amphitholina cuniculus, an amphipod with an alga-burrowing habit, has been mainly observed in Bifurcaria bifurcata mats on the intertidal rocky shores of the southern region of the Galician coast (NW Spain; 42o11.27′ N, 8o48.25′ W). We designed a laboratory experiment conducted in June 2009 to analyse the association between the amphipod and the macroalga. In particular, we hypothesised that (i) this species would exhibit different behaviour during the day and at night, and (ii) adults of A. cuniculus would prefer B. bifurcata as habitat rather than Fucus vesiculosus or Sargassum muticum. Results supported the hypothesis that adults of A. cuniculus preferred B. bifurcata, although such preferences did not show the day/night variability predicted. This amphipod might be considered a specialist species, at least on rocky intertidal shores along the Galician coast.

In this work, we have investigated in position (r) and momentum (p) spaces the concurrent phenomena occurring at the vicinity of the transition state (TS) (the so-called transition region) of selected chemical reactions (such as the hydrogenic abstraction and the exchange hydrogenic reactions) by means of a broad set of single information-theoretic functionals of the one-particle density (such as the disequilibrium (D), exponential entropy (L), Fisher information (I) and the power entropy (J)) and composite information-theoretic measures which includes various information planes (such as the I-D, D-L, and I-J planes) and complexities of the Fisher-Shannon and Lopez-Mancini-Calbet (LMC) types. The analysis of the single functionals and the information planes revealed that these information-theoretical elements can identify all the chemically significant regions, not only the reactant/product regions (R/P) and the TS but also those that are not present in the energy profile, such as the bond cleavage energy region (BCER), the bond breaking/forming regions (B-B/F) and the charge transfer complex. Moreover, the analysis of the complexities shows that in position as well as in the joint (r-p) spaces, the energy profile of the abstraction reaction bears the same information-theoretical features of the LMC and FS measures. Finally, it is shown why most of the chemical features of interest (such as e.g., BCER and B-B/F) are lost in the energy profile, being only revealed when particular information-theoretical aspects of localizability (L or J), uniformity (D) and disorder (I) are considered. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

The stationary states of the half-line Coulomb potential are described by quantum-mechanical wavefunctions, which are controlled by the Laguerre polynomials L(x). Here, we first calculate the qth-order frequency or entropic moments of this quantum system, which is controlled by some entropic functionals of the Laguerre polynomials. These functionals are shown to be equal to a Lauricella function F(,…,,,1) by use of the Srivastava-Niukkanen linearization relation of Laguerre polynomials. The resulting general expressions are applied to obtain the following information-theoretic quantities of the half-line Coulomb potential: disequilibrium, Renyi and Tsallis entropies. An alternative and simpler expression for the linear entropy is also found by means of a different method. Then, the Shannon entropy and the LMC shape complexity of the lowest and highest (Rydberg) energetic states are explicitly given; moreover, sharp information-theoretic-based upper bounds to these quantities are found for general physical states. These quantities are numerically discussed for the ground and various excited states. The analytic information theory of quantum systems includes the exact determination of their spatial extension or multidimensional spreading in both position and momentum spaces by means of the familiar variance and its generalization, the power and logarithmic moments, and, more appropriately, the Shannon entropy and the Fisher information. These complementary uncertainty measures have a global or local character, respectively, because they are power-like (variance, moments), logarithmic (Shannon) and gradient (Fisher) functionals of the corresponding probability distribution. Here we explicitly discuss all these spreading measures (and their associated uncertainty relations) in both position and momentum for the main prototype in D-dimensional physics, the hydrogenic system, directly in terms of the dimensionality and the hyperquantum numbers which characterize the involved states. Then, we analyze in detail such measures for s-states, circular states (i.e., single-electron states of highest angular momenta allowed within an electronic manifold characterized by a given principal hyperquantum number), and Rydberg states (i.e., states with large radial hyperquantum numbers n). © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Peracarids (Crustacea: Peracarida) are an important component of soft-sediment faunas and are considered good indicators of quality of water and sediments. Nevertheless, little is known about diversity of peracarid crustaceans on the shallow subtidal sediments of Playa America, a sandy beach in the Ensenada de Baiona (Galicia, NW Spain). Therefore, the peracarid fauna of its shallow subtidal zone was studied in a fine-sand site at 4-m depth from February 1996 to February 1997. Monthly sampling yielded a total of 4753 individuals belonging to 60 species. Amphipods were dominant in number of individuals and species followed by cumaceans. The assemblage showed a stable composition in species through the year and was numerically dominated by a few species, namely the amphipods Siphonoecetes kroyeranus and Microprotopus maculatus and the cumacean Pseudocuma longicorne. These species showed large monthly fluctuations in abundance, with maximal values between summer and autumn.

exico Abstract: Alfalfa has been used as animal feedstuff and nowadays as a human dietary supplement in undernourished populations. Therefore, we considered whether a 65 ◦ C prepared unfractionated alfalfa protein concentrate (UAPC) could be capable of supporting the normal body growth of weaned rats as well as their spatial learning, memory and astroglial organization. Rats were fed isocaloric (1.8kJg −1 )a nd isoproteic (100gkg −1 ) diets for 28days containing UAPC or casein as their protein source. Thereafter, animals were submitted to a Morris water maze test (MWM) followed by an evaluation of memory retention. At the end of the spatial learning tests, the cerebral cortex, hippocampus and hypothalamus astrocyte population was morphologically and immunohistochemically analyzed. UAPC had two limiting essential amino acids that seem to have retarded rates of growth and caused temporary learning and memory alterations. The UAPC diet induced a transitory memory loss as well as a recoverable memory retention delay after returning to a commercial ration. The astrocyte cell number was decreased in the parietal cortex and arcuate nucleus but not in the hippocampus; however, the latter showed a minor reduction in their cell density. UAPC did not adequately support the development of weaned rats, and decreased the number of astrocytes in the cerebral cortex and hypothalamus.  2005 Society of Chemical Industry

An analytical expression of the electron density function r r due to Schwartz for two-electron atomic systems is applied to a detailed study of density-dependent properties of relatively heavy two-electron ions. Comparison of the Schwartz results with those from accurate Hartree)Fock and Hylleraas wave functions shows that despite its simple yet analytical form, the Schwartz density has a quantitative applicability in the density study of two-electron atoms within the nonrelativistic framework. rn The present knowledge of the monotonicity properties of the spherically averaged electron density p(r) and its derivatives, which comes mostly from Roothan-Hartree-Fock calculations, is reviewed and extended to all Hartree-Fock ground-state atoms from hydrogen (Z = 1) to uranium (Z = 92). In looking for electron functions with universal (i.e., valid in the whole periodic table) monotonicity properties, it is found that there exist positive values of ct so that the function go(r; ct) = p( r)/ra is convex, and gl(r; a) = - p'( r)/r a is not only monotonically decreasing from the origin but also convex. This is, however, not the case for the function gJr; a) = p"(r)/r". Additionally, the conditions which specify values for p such that the function gn( r; p ) = (- l)"p'")(r)/r n = 0,l in all neutral atoms below uranium. The last property is used to obtain inequalities of general validity involving three radial expectation values which generalize all the similar ones known to date, as well as other relationships among these quantities and the values of the electron density and its derivatives at the nucleus.
