3. LED lighting threatens adult aquatic insects: Impact magnitude and distance thresholds

Abstract

Abstract Artificial light at night (ALAN) is increasing globally, and changing in quality due to the installation of white LED street lighting. ALAN is a threat to biodiversity and ecosystem functioning, yet important knowledge gaps exist regarding the magnitude of impacts and how these vary between habitats and levels of exposure. The disturbance of aquatic habitats by ALAN is of particular concern as human settlements and activities are often located near waterbodies, and many aquatic species are sensitive to ALAN. Focusing on adult aquatic insects, an experimental approach was employed in the riparian zone of a structurally simplified river within a dark rural landscape. Two studies were used to (a) estimate the magnitude of the capture effect of white LED lamps and (b) to explore how captures at lamps vary with their distance from the river, and define any distance thresholds. Both studies sampled mayflies (Ephemeroptera), caddisflies (Trichoptera) and true flies (Diptera) repeatedly during mid‐to‐late summer using modified flight intercept traps positioned adjacent to portable LED lamps. In Study A, lit traps were paired with unlit controls. In Study B, lit traps were positioned at six distances up to a maximum of 80 m from the stream edge. For each of the three study orders, captures were significantly higher in the lit treatment compared to the dark control, with medium to large effect sizes. For all study orders, captures at lamps significantly reduced with increasing distance from the river edge. Rapid declines in captures were recorded for Trichoptera (from 10 m) and Ephemeroptera (40 m), with a more gradual decline in Diptera from 60 m that continued up to the maximum sample distance. Previous research indicates that LED lighting can be less attractive to flying insects than broader spectrum alternatives. However, this study demonstrates that the effects of white LED lamps on flying adult aquatic insects should not be dismissed and can extend far from aquatic habitats. As a precautionary approach, and until finer recommendations are available, we recommend that LED lamps should be excluded from a buffer zone of ca. 40–60 m around rivers.

Abstract

Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is an important life-saving technology for patients with severe acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). Unfortunately, ECMO has been traditionally contraindicated in patients with hemorrhagic neurologic diseases. The recent improvement in ECMO devices, increased utilization and experience with venovenous ECMO technologies among healthcare teams, and the use of ECMO without anticoagulation has expanded the potential populations that may benefit from ECMO. We present a case of successful utilization of venovenous ECMO for severe respiratory failure secondary to ARDS in a patient with aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage and severe, episodic cerebral vasospasm. We also discuss important limitations and considerations for future successful use of ECMO in hemorrhagic stroke. This case report highlights the potential for this life-saving technology in patients with hemorrhagic stroke.

10. An ultrasonography-based approach for tissue modelling to inform phototherapy treatment strategies

Abstract

Currently, diagnostic medicine uses a multitude of tools ranging from ionising radiation to histology analysis. With advances in piezoelectric crystal technology, high-frequency ultrasound imaging has developed to achieve comparatively high resolution without the drawbacks of ionising radiation. This research proposes a low-cost, non-invasive and real-time protocol for informing photo-therapy procedures using ultrasound imaging. We combine currently available ultrasound procedures with Monte Carlo methods for assessing light transport and photo-energy deposition in the tissue. The measurements from high-resolution ultrasound scans is used as input for optical simulations. Consequently, this provides a pipeline that will inform medical practitioners for better therapy strategy planning. While validating known inferences of light transport through biological tissue, our results highlight the range of information such as temporal monitoring and energy deposition at varying depths. This process also retains the flexibility of testing various wavelengths for individual-specific geometries and anatomy.

Abstract

Of several isolates from saline-tolerant tilapia exhibiting anti-vibrio activity, an isolate that demonstrated inhibitory activity with the biggest zone of inhibition against the shrimp pathogens, Vibrio harveyi and V. parahaemolyticus were chosen and investigated in this study. The isolate showed significant inhibition against the shrimp pathogens, V. harveyi and V. parahaemolyticus in a competitive assay. Upon 16S rRNA sequencing, the isolate was identified as putative Proteus mirabilis (MJA 2.6S). P. mirabilis (MJA 2.6S) exhibited extracellular protease, cellulase and amylase activities. Pathogenicity tests showed that it was not pathogenic to the shrimp even at the highest concentration of 108 CFU ml−1. Further, P. mirabilis (MJA 2.6S) improved growth and survival, stimulated higher phenoloxidase and bactericidal activities in the shrimp host and protected it from V. harveyi experimental infection. In addition, the isolate P. mirabilis (MJA 2.6S) significantly reduced the ammonia level of the pond water samples in vitro. Taken together, the results clearly showed the strong probiotic potential of P. mirabilis (MJA 2.6S) in shrimp and hence further studies are needed to determine its wider application as a probiotic in P. monodon culture.

Abstract

In March 2019, a scientific meeting was held at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) Luskin Center to discuss approaches to expedite the translation of neurobiological insights to advances in the treatment of alcohol use disorder (AUD). A guiding theme that emerged was that while translational research in AUD is clearly a challenge, it is also a field ripe with opportunities. Herein, we seek to summarize and disseminate the recommendations for the future of translational AUD research using four sections. First, we briefly review the current landscape of AUD treatment including the available evidence-based treatments and their uptake in clinical settings. Second, we discuss AUD treatment development efforts from a translational science viewpoint. We review current hurdles to treatment development as well as opportunities for mechanism-informed treatment. Third, we consider models of translational science and public health impact. Together, these critical insights serve as the bases for a series of recommendations and future directions. Abstract

AIM The Safe Passage Study, conducted by the Prenatal Alcohol in SIDS and Stillbirth Network, is investigating contributions of prenatal alcohol exposure to foetal and infant demise. This current report presents physiological data from full-term infants with no prenatal exposure to alcohol or maternal smoking. METHODS Data are from 666 infants from the Northern Plains (North and South Dakota) and South Africa. A standardised protocol assessed cardiorespiratory function during baseline and head-up tilts shortly after birth and at one month of age. RESULTS Analyses revealed significant increases in heart rate and decreases in BP from the newborn to one-month time period as well as diminished heart rate responses to head-up tilt in one-month-old infants. CONCLUSION The Safe Passage Study was successful in characterising physiology in a large number of infants at sites known to have elevated risks for SIDS. Results demonstrate that even with low prenatal adverse exposures, there are significant changes in cardiorespiratory function as infants enter the window of increased risk for SIDS.

Abstract

Problem Quantitative measurement of proteins in bodily fluids or cellular preparations is critical for the evaluation of biomarkers or the study of complex cellular processes. While immunoassays are the most common quantitative approach used so far, they are not practical for the evaluation of multiple proteins. Microfluidic technology allows a fine spatial control in immobilizing proteins and biomolecules inside microchannels, eliminating cross-reactivity between competing analytes, and allowing rapid and sensitive detection of targeted antigens for multiple applications. We report the characterization and validation of the Simple Plex™ platform for the detection and quantification of cytokines and chemokines from human and mouse samples. Method Cytokine and chemokine expression levels were determined using Simple Plex cartridges from ProteinSimple. Serum samples were obtained from the Yale Biorepository. Results Our data demonstrate an excellent correlation between the results obtained with Simple Plex and conventional immunoassays such as ELISA and Luminex. Conclusion We describe the characterization and validation of Simple Plex, a novel multi-analyte, automated microfluidic platform that allows the evaluation of cytokines and chemokines from human and mice biological samples. Simple Plex showed significant advantages over traditional approaches in terms of low sample volume requirements, sensitivity and dynamic range, coefficient of variation, and reproducibility.

Abstract

Fully inkjet-printed, transparent conductive oxide thin-film transistors on polyimide are demonstrated for the first time integrating SnO2:F source/drain electrodes, ZrO2 gate dielectric, and ZnSnO semiconductor layers. A mobility of ∼0.04 cm2 V−1 s−1 was obtained at a maximum thermal processing temperature of 300 °C. In addition to electrical device characterization, SEM, TEM, and EDX analyses were performed to assess microstructure and chemical composition. Through our analysis, we show that future performance improvements require an increase in source/drain conductivity at lower annealing temperatures, the reduction in film cracking due to thermal stress, and the reduction in intermixing between layers occurring during annealing.
