Abstract

COVID-19 is one of the worst pandemics in recent human history, causing huge health, economic, and psychosocial damage. Since the pandemic hit, several unsubstantiated claims regarding exposure, transmission and management have been disseminated. Misinformation and associated public confusion now extend to the COVID-19 vaccines, spanning from claims based on possible links between some vaccine types and rare blood clots, to baseless claims. As a result, the public's trust in COVID-19 vaccines has been eroded, fuelling an already troubling trend of vaccine hesitancy. As medication experts and the most accessible healthcare providers, pharmacists are well equipped with the required skills and knowledge to improve COVID-19 vaccine uptake by taking roles that range from dispelling myths, to providing reliable evidence-based information, through to vaccine administration. This paper discusses public hesitancy to COVID-19 vaccines, major contributing factors, and the role pharmacists can play in reducing hesitancy and increasing vaccine uptake.

12. Paradiplomacy and political geography: The geopolitics of substate regional diplomacy

Abstract

Political geographers have increasingly engaged with ‘alternative’ diplomatic practices, actors, cultures, and sites which transcend traditional state-centric modalities. Despite this growing interest, the term paradiplomacy, referring to the international activities of sub-state regions, has not featured heavily in the geographical literature. This paper brings debates surrounding the nature and practices of paradiplomacy into conversation with recent political geography scholarship on diplomacy and, in particular, geopolitics. It begins by introducing the increasingly plural understandings of diplomacy which have challenged dominant state-centric discourse and foregrounded the inherent spatiality of diplomatic practices. This is followed by an examination of the dynamic evolution of the term ‘paradiplomacy’. The paper goes on to suggest how theoretical and methodological insights from political geography could be productively interwoven with the study of paradiplomacy. The final section exemplifies this through an exploration of the geopolitics of sub-state diplomacy. It is argued that by building on methodological insights from critical readings of geopolitics it is possible to offer a multi-scalar analysis of paradiplomacy which contributes to an ongoing project of political geography – to unsettle and challenge ingrained imaginaries which underpin our understandings of the region, the state, and the international political system.

Abstract

Mainstream broadcasting media is a potentially powerful avenue for disseminating wellness education. For example, it can be used for community-based risk management, including preparing for pandemic events. The media can have a considerable positive impact on the public by increasing their health knowledge, changing attitudes and intentions, and influencing health behavior. However, although the broadcasting media can usefully convey prosocial, healthy messages, there is also a risk of propagating incorrect and antisocial, poor public health information.

22. Longitudinal analysis of the neurological features of ataxia-telangiectasia

Abstract

Aim: To assess the relationship between genotype and neurological progression in ataxia‐telangiectasia (A‐T).Methods: Clinical and laboratory data were extracted retrospectively from the records of patients attending the UK National Ataxia‐Telangiectasia Clinic. Neurological assessments were performed using the A‐T Index (Crawford Score) and the A‐T Neurological Examination Scale Toolkit (A‐T NEST). Variables influencing phenotype were identified by using an information‐theoretic approach starting from a maximal model to generate estimates of coefficients for each variable. Per‐individual progression was assessed for patients with three or more clinic attendances.Results: The genotype could be determined for 125/135 patients. Crawford and A‐T NEST scores were well correlated. For both scoring systems the estimated coefficients were significantly positive for Age x kinase activity but not Age x protein expression. Unlike the per–genotype analysis, the individual progression of neurological scores in the 34 patients that attended on three or more occasions was not smooth and linear (and in some cases improved over time).Interpretation: Residual kinase activity confers a milder phenotype but there is no difference between kinase‐dead and protein‐null genotypes. The non‐linear progression of individual patients’ neurological scores may reflect biological complexity, day‐to‐day variability, limitations of the assessment methods or a combination of all three.

Abstract

This pilot study was designed to assess the perceptions of physical therapy (PT) and occupational therapy (OT) students regarding the use of computer-assisted pedagogy and prosection-oriented communications in the laboratory component of a human anatomy course at a comprehensive health sciences university in the southeastern United States. The goal was to determine whether student perceptions changed over the course of a summer session regarding verbal, visual, tactile, and web-based teaching methodologies. Pretest and post-test surveys were distributed online to students who volunteered to participate in the pilot study. Despite the relatively small sample size, statistically significant results indicated that PT and OT students who participated in this study perceived an improved ability to name major anatomical structures from memory, to draw major anatomical structures from memory, and to explain major anatomical relationships from memory. Students differed in their preferred learning styles. This study demonstrates that the combination of small group learning and digital web-based learning seems to increase PT and OT students' confidence in their anatomical knowledge. Further research is needed to determine which forms of integrated instruction lead to improved student performance in the human gross anatomy laboratory.

Abstract

The efficacy of an ointment containing kunzea oil for the treatment of horses with localised acute or chronic pastern dermatitis was assessed. Thirty-seven horses were randomly allocated to treatment with an ointment containing either 20 per cent kunzea oil (test) or 2 per cent ketoconazole (control). Only 21 of the horses completed the study. The severity of the lesions was assessed before and after seven days of treatment. The kunzea oil formulation resulted in a significant decrease in the median total area of the lesions from 40 cm(2) (range 3 to 252 cm(2)) to 0 cm(2) (range 0 to 34 cm(2)), with complete resolution of the signs of pastern dermatitis in seven of 11 cases. The control formulation resulted in no significant change in the total area of the lesions, and the signs of pastern dermatitis resolved completely in only two of the 10 cases.

Abstract

Virtual engineering, a combination of numerical simulation, empiricalism, and small-scale testing for validation, is useful for motor design and is rapidly becoming the standard tool for designing new motors. Appropriate physics-based models are required for the propellant, chamber, nozzle, and plume regions. We discuss some modern developments of physics-based models used in virtual engineering, and comment on current trends. We anticipate that virtual engineering will one day be used at the design stage, with full scale motor firings reserved as a final qualification test.
