RATIONALE Analytical methods that can identify the source and fate of mercury and organomercury compounds are likely to be useful tools to investigate mercury in the environment. Carbon isotope ratio analysis of methylmercury (MeHg) together with mercury isotope ratios may offer a robust tool to study environmental cycling of organomercury compounds within fish tissues and other matrices. METHODS MeHg carbon isotope ratios were determined by gas chromatography/combustion-isotope ratio mass spectrometry (GC/C-IRMS) either directly or following derivatization using sodium tetraethylborate. The effects of a normalization protocol and of derivatization on the measurement uncertainty of the methylmercury δ13 CVPDB values were investigated. RESULTS GC/C-IRMS analysis resulted in a δ13 CVPDB value for an in-house MeHg reference material of δ13 CVPDB = -68.3 ± 7.7‰ (combined standard uncertainty, k = 1). This agreed very well with the value obtained by offline flow-injection analysis/chemical oxidation/isotope ratio mass spectrometry of δ13 CVPDB = -68.85 ± 0.17‰ (combined standard uncertainty, k = 1) although the uncertainty was substantially larger. The minimum amount of MeHg required for analysis was determined to be 20 μg. CONCLUSIONS While the δ13 CVPDB values of MeHg can be obtained by GC/C-IRMS methods with or without derivatization, the low abundance of MeHg precludes such analyses in fish tissues unless there is substantial MeHg contamination. Environmental samples with sufficient MeHg pollution can be studied using these methods provided that the MeHg can be quantitatively extracted. The more general findings from this study regarding derivatization protocol implementation within an autosampler vial as well as measurement uncertainty associated with derivatization, normalization to reporting scales and integration are applicable to other GC/C-IRMS-based measurements.

RATIONALE Natural stable carbon (δ(13)C) and nitrogen isotope ratios (δ(15)N) of humans are related to individual dietary habits and environmental and physiological factors. In forensic science the stable isotope ratios of human remains such as hair and nail are used for geographical allocation. Thus, knowledge of the global spatial distribution of human δ(13)C and δ(15)N values is an essential component in the interpretation of stable isotope analytical results. METHODS No substantial global datasets of human stable isotope ratios are currently available, although the amount of available (published) data has increased within recent years. We have herein summarised the published data on human global δ(13)C andδ(15)N values (around 3600 samples) and added experimental values of more than 400 additional worldwide human hair and nail samples. In order to summarise isotope ratios for hair and nail samples correction factors were determined. RESULTS The current available dataset of human stable isotope ratios is biased towards Europe and North America with only limited data for countries in Africa, Central and South America and Southeast Asia. The global spatial distribution of carbon isotopes is related to latitude and supports the fact that human δ(13)C values are dominated by the amount of C4 plants in the diet, either due to direct ingestion as plant food, or by its use as animal feed. In contrast, the global spatial distribution of human δ(15)N values is apparently not exclusively related to the amount of fish or meat ingested, but also to environmental factors that influence agricultural production. CONCLUSIONS There are still a large proportion of countries, especially in Africa, where there are no available data for human carbon and nitrogen isotope ratios. Although the interpretation of modern human carbon isotope ratios at the global scale is quite possible, and correlates with the latitude, the potential influences of extrinsic and/or intrinsic factors on human nitrogen isotope ratios have to be taken into consideration.

Large wood and boulder placement projects have become common in the Pacific Northwest to restore complex stream habitat for juvenile Coho Salmon Oncorhynchus kisutch and other salmonids. We evaluated habitat responses at 91 large wood restoration projects in western Oregon from pretreatment to 1 year and 6 years after treatment. Large logs were arranged in jams without cabling or burial in the bottom or banks of the stream. Projects commonly treated 0.5–1 km of stream, but some extended up to 2.3 km. Significant changes in the amounts of large wood, complex pools, and predicted Coho Salmon rearing capacity were observed within 1 year of treatment. Six years after treatment, the amount of large wood, complex pools, and Coho Salmon rearing capacity remained significantly higher than pretreatment levels by 100, 800, and 32%, respectively, and the surface area of pools and gravel increased significantly over pretreatment levels by 15% and 8%, respectively. Bumblefoot (pododermatitis), often described as the most significant environmental disease of captive penguins, is commonly due to excessive pressure or trauma on the plantar surface of the avian foot, resulting in inflammation or necrosis and causing severe swelling, abrasions, or cracks in the skin. Although not formally evaluated in penguins, contributing factors for bumblefoot are thought to be similar to those initiating the condition in raptors and poultry. These factors include substrate, body weight, and lack of exercise. The primary purpose of this retrospective study was to evaluate variables potentially contributing to the development and duration of plantar lesions in aquarium-maintained African penguins (Spheniscus demersus), including sex, weight, age, season, exhibit activity, and territory substrate. Results indicate that males develop significantly more plantar lesions than females. Penguins weighing between 3.51 and 4.0 kg develop plantar lesions significantly more often than penguins weighing between 2.5 and 3.5 kg, and because male African penguins ordinarily weigh significantly more than females, weight is likely a contributing factor in the development of lesions in males compared with females. Significantly more plantar lesions were observed in penguins standing for greater than 50% of their time on exhibit than swimming. Penguins occupying smooth concrete territories developed more plantar lesions compared with penguins occupying grate territories. Recommendations for minimizing bumblefoot in African penguins include training penguins for monthly foot examinations for early detection of plantar lesions predisposing for the disease, encouraging swimming activity, and replacing smooth surfaces on exhibit with surfaces providing variable degrees of pressure and texture on the feet.

OBJECTIVES: To determine the effect of colony-stimulating factor (CSF) on incidence of febrile neutropenia, infection, and survival in older people with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) treated with chemotherapy. DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study. SETTING: The Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results–Medicare database. PARTICIPANTS: Thirteen thousand two hundred twenty-three people diagnosed with NHL at age 65 and older (mean age 74.9, range 65–102) in 1992 to 2002 who received chemotherapy within 12 months of diagnosis. MEASUREMENTS: Primary prophylaxis was defined as CSF administered at the start of chemotherapy before febrile neutropenia or infection; secondary prophylaxis was defined as CSF use after febrile neutropenia or infection. RESULTS: Participants with five to nine administrations of primary prophylactic CSF had a 42% lower risk of febrile neutropenia (odds ratio (OR)=0.58, 95% confidence interval (CI)=0.41–0.83), and participants with 10 or more administrations had a 48% lower risk (OR=0.52, 95% CI=0.36–0.76) after adjusting for age, stage, histology, and comorbidity. Results did not differ significantly after adjusting for propensity score of receiving CSF. There was no significant association between primary prophylactic CSF and overall survival, but secondary prophylactic CSF was significantly associated with better survival. Four to 10 administrations of secondary prophylactic CSF was associated with 9% lower mortality risk (hazard ratio (HR)=0.91, 95% CI=0.84–0.99), 11 to 23 administrations was associated with 23% lower mortality risk (HR=0.77, 95% CI=0.71–0.84) and 24 or more administrations was associated with 13% lower mortality risk (HR=0.87, 95% CI+0.79–0.95) than in participants not receiving CSF after neutropenia or infection. CONCLUSION: Primary prophylactic CSF was observed to be effective in reducing the incidence of neutropenia and infection. These findings substantiate the clinical guidelines for recommending prophylactic CSF in older people with NHL receiving chemotherapy.

This paper describes two cases of metaphyseal osteomyelitis in young dogs. The condition was characterised by generalised stiffness, muscle atrophy and reluctance to stand. Pain was evident on deep palpation of the distal extremities of long bones. Radiographic lesions, consisting of diffuse areas of bone lysis and pronounced periosteal reaction, were demonstrated in the metaphyseal regions of multiple long bones, particularly the distal radii and ulnae. Growth plates appeared unaffected and remained open. Biochemical abnormalities included significant increases in the plasma concentrations of fibrinogen and alkaline phosphatase. A pronounced neutrophilia and absolute monocytosis were noted in one dog. A six week course of amoxycil-lin/clavulanic acid in combination with metronidazole resulted in complete resolution of clinical and radiographic signs in each case. Growth disturbances were not observed.

The product of the PPP1R3B gene (G(L)) is the regulatory subunit of PP1 - a serine/threonine phosphatase involved in the modulation of glycogen synthesis in the liver and skeletal muscle. The PPP1R3B gene is located on chromosome 8p23 in a region that has been linked with type 2 diabetes and maturity-onset diabetes of the young (MODY). We examined whether sequence variants at the PPP1R3B locus are responsible for the linkage with diabetes observed at this location. RT-PCR analysis revealed the existence of two alternative promoters. These and the two exons of this gene were sequenced in the probands of 13 Joslin families showing the strongest evidence of linkage at 8p23. A total of 20 variants were observed: two in the 5' flanking region, one in the intron (9 bp 5' of exon 2), and 17 in the 3' UTR. The intronic variant generated a new acceptor splice site, resulting in an alternative splice variant with a longer 5' UTR. However, neither this nor other variants segregated with diabetes in the 13 'linked' families. Furthermore, allele frequencies were similar in 90 family probands from the Joslin Study and 347 unrelated controls. Thus, genetic variability in the PPP1R3B gene does not appear to contribute to diabetes in our mostly Caucasian families. However, a role cannot be excluded in other populations such as the Japanese, among whom linkage to diabetes is also observed at 8p23 and a non-synonymous mutation has been detected in the PPP1R3B gene.

The mediation of nociception with analgesic medications has not been well documented in elasmobranchs. The purpose of this study was to determine effective analgesic doses of the opioid agonist-antagonist, butorphanol, and the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, ketoprofen, in an elasmobranch. This was evaluated by repetitively assessing minimum anesthetic concentrations of the immersion anesthetic, tricaine methanesulfonate (MS-222), required to prevent response to noxious stimuli in chain dogfish (Scyliorhinus retifer) when administered multiple doses of each of the analgesics (0.25, 0.5, 1.0, 2.5, and 5.0 mg/kg butorphanol and 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, and 4.0 mg/kg ketoprofen). Baseline concentrations of MS-222 required to prevent a response to a noxious stimulus were determined for each animal and served as the controls. Although individual animals displayed a reduction in MS-222 concentration with various doses of both analgesics, no statistically significant difference was noted between control animals and animals given analgesics. It is plausible that unique elasmobranch anatomy, lack of appropriate medication dose or timing of administration, and other physiological factors not yet identified may have contributed to the lack of apparent efficacy of the analgesics evaluated in this study. Recent success propagating captive beluga has resulted from combined efforts by North American zoos and aquariums to manage disparate collections as a single population. This success has provided a tremendous opportunity to increase our understanding of beluga reproductive biology. Blood samples were collected on a weekly to biweekly basis from 23 female and 12 male beluga, ranging in age from 2–15 years, for analysis of serum progesterone (P) and testosterone (T), respectively. Peri-parturient observational data, including food intake, duration and signs of labor, and nursing patterns were collected from 15 days prepartum to 30 days postpartum during 21 births. Total body lengths and weights were collected from 10 captive-born beluga. For female beluga, the mean (±SD) age, body length, and weight at first conceptions were 9.1±2.8 years, 318.0±9.1 cm, and 519±84 kg. Thirty-five luteal phases and 13 conceptions were detected from January–June, and 70% of luteal phases and 80% conceptions occurred from March–May. The mean luteal phase and total estrous cycle lengths were 30.0±6.5 days and 48.0±4.6 days, respectively. For male beluga, the mean age that males sired their first calf was 13.3±2.6 years. Compared to younger males ( 8 years of age, 5.0 ng/ml) were elevated significantly only during the interval from January–April. Highest T concentrations (6.2±4.9 ng/ml) were recorded from January–March, whereas nadir concentrations (1.1±1.0 ng/ml) were detected from August–September. The mean gestation length was 475.0±20.4 days (n=9). For parturition, the mean time from the first appearance of fluke or rostrum to delivery, delivery to placental passage, and delivery to nursing were 4.4±2.9 hr, 7.6±1.8 hr, and 43±45 hr, respectively. All cows had decreased food intake on the day of delivery, with 44% having zero intake. Peak 24-hr nursing activity occurred 3.9±2.7 days post-partum. Growth (i.e., body weight and length) as a function of age were well described by the Gompertz model (r2=0.91, 0.93). Based on the model, growth in body weight and length were significantly greater in males compared to females. Predicted birth weight (88.9 kg) was similar for both sexes, however, and male calves were predicted to be shorter (154.3 cm) than female calves (160.7 cm). The results provide the first descriptions of captive beluga reproductive physiology, including endocrinology, peri-parturient behavior, growth, and reproductive maturity. Serum ferritin concentration correlates with tissue iron stores in humans, horses, calves, dogs, cats, and pigs. Serum ferritin is considered the best serum analyte to predict total body iron stores in these species, and is more reliable than serum iron or total iron-binding capacity, both of which may be affected by disorders unrelated to iron adequacy or excess (including hypoproteinemia, chronic infection, hemolytic anemia, hypothyroidism, renal disease, and drug administration). Iron overload has been documented to result in hemochromatosis in captive northern fur seals (Callorhinus ursinus); therefore, we developed an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) to measure serum ferritin in this species. The assay uses two murine anti-canine ferritin monoclonal antibodies in a sandwich arrangement that was originally used in an ELISA to measure serum ferritin in dogs. Ferritin isolated from fur seal liver was used as a standard. Ferritin standards were linear from 0 to 50 ng/ml. Recovery of purified ferritin from fur seal serum varied from 89% to 99%. Iron storage disease (hemochromatosis) has been reported in many species of both captive and free-ranging animals. In this study we examined the relationship between this disease and concentrations of iron analytes in aquarium-held northern fur seals (Callorhinus ursinus). Sera were analyzed for iron, total iron-binding capacity (TIBC), ferritin, ceruloplasmin, and haptoglobin concentrations in a retrospective study that included samples taken over a 14-year period. The animals ranged in age from

African penguins (Spheniscus demersus) are common display animals in North American zoos and aquariums. At present, 43 American Zoo and Aquarium Association (AZA)-accredited institutions maintain over 700 of these birds. A survey of facilities found that only seven institutions maintain their birds in “saltwater habitats” (natural, brine, or artificial seawater systems), while the remaining institutions provide freshwater habitats. Penguins maintained in freshwater habitats commonly receive dietary salt supplements, though evidence is lacking as to the value of this practice. This study was designed to evaluate the necessity of salt supplementation in African penguins. We report the results of a randomized, 10-month comparison of plasma electrolytes (Na, Cl, and K) between groups of 10 salt-supplemented and nonsupplemented birds living in a freshwater environment. The results showed no significant differences between the two groups. An interfacility comparison at the same time points revealed temporal pattern differences in analyte values between the facilities; however, the absolute concentrations did not exceed clinical ranges found in healthy birds. Furthermore, single time-point comparisons between wild and captive African penguins indicated similar sodium concentrations, while potassium and chloride concentrations varied between groups. Finally, the plasma electrolyte levels in 20 birds remained statistically unchanged after a 60-day withdrawal from salt supplementation. This study provides experimental evidence that African penguins maintained in freshwater exhibits on a herring-, capelin-, and squid-based diet do not require salt supplementation. In addition to the practical implications regarding the need for salt supplementation for captive birds, the results also have theoretical significance. They provide evidence that penguins do not need to ingest high salt concentrations to remain in electrolyte balance. The sera of adult aquarium-held pinnipeds from four species (family Phocidae: harbor seals (Phoca vitulina) and gray seals (Halichoerus grypus); family Otariidae: northern fur seals (Callorhinus ursinus) and California sea lions (Zalophus californianus)) were analyzed for vitamin A (retinol), vitamin E (α-tocopherol), total cholesterol, triglycerides, phospholipids, and fatty acids. Each subject animal was healthy at the time of blood collection, was fasted for at least 12 hr prior to sampling, and was maintained on a constant diet and supplement regime throughout the study. Retinol values for the four species ranged from 0.16 to 0.92 μg/mL, with the lowest concentrations seen in the harbor seals and the highest in the northern fur seals. Vitamin E values ranged from 10.55 to 43.58 μg/mL, with northern fur seals showing the highest and gray seals the lowest levels. Vitamin E/lipid ratios (cholesterol, triglyceride, phospholipid, and total lipids) were also examined. A significant correlation was seen between vitamin E and total lipids (P

There is an increased use of rapid cookery systems (e.g. Clamshell®) in the foodservice sector to decrease preparation time. Foodservice pork loin chops (n=320) were used to determine the effects of cookery method (Clamshell®, CS vs Farberware, FB), marination (marinated vs nonmarinated), portion size (113 vs 170 g), and endpoint cooking temperature (68 vs 75C) on cooking characteristics, shear force values and sensory traits. The first experiment (n = 160 chops) evaluated Warner-Bratzler shear force, while the second experiment (n = 160 chops) measured sensory traits and both measured cooking characteristics. The chops cooked by CS had shorter (P 0.05). Marination increased (P < 0.05) thaw loss. Cook times were shorter (P < 0.01) and thaw and cook losses were lower (P < 0.05) for 113 g compared to 170 g chops. The 113 g portions were more (P < 0.05) tender and juicy than 170 g. Chops cooked to 68C required less (P < 0.05) cooking time, and had lower (P < 0.05) cook losses than chops cooked to 75C. Marinated 113 g chops were significantly juicier than any other combination of marination and portion size. These data suggest that a rapid cookery system can reduce cooking time of foodservice pork loin chops by as much as 50%, without detrimental effects on eating quality.

Seven dogs with non-regenerative anaemia were diagnosed as having myelofibrosis on the basis of the presence of collagen and increased deposits of reticulin fibre in the haemopoietic spaces of bone marrow core biopsies. A scoring system was used to assess the cellularity of the marrow and the amounts of collagen, reticulin and haemosiderin present. These scores, together with the haematological findings, were compared with the dogs' responses to treatment and their outcome. Treatment consisted of blood transfusions, where required, and anabolic steroids and corticosteroids. Three dogs deteriorated and were euthanased within three months of diagnosis, but the other four recovered fully. There was no correlation between the collagen and reticulin scores, or the degree of anaemia and the outcome, but the four dogs which recovered all had a macrocytosis when first examined. There was no evidence of an underlying lymphoproliferative or myeloproliferative disease in any of the seven cases.

Information on the physiological responses of plants to below-ground herbivory is sparse. Effects of root herbivory by Diabrotica virgifera Leconte and the interactions of herbivory and soil moisture on photosynthesis and water relations of maize (Zea mays) were examined in a greenhouse. Plants were infested with 0, 50 and 100 larvae of D. v. virgifera at the six-leaf stage of development and water stress induced to half of the plants in each treatment. The 100-larvae treatment removed 67% of the roots and the 50-larvae treatment removed 19.6% of the roots, as compared to uninfested controls. Fifty-five days after infestation, damaged plants had recovered as there were no significant differences in root volumes among the infestation levels. Measurements of photosynthesis, stomatal conductance and leaf relative water content were not significantly different among larval treatments at 7, 13, 24 and 30 days after infestation. When soil moisture was withheld, however, photosynthesis and stomatal conductance were significantly reduced. On day 24, water stressed plants infested with 100 larvae had a 23% decrease in photosynthesis as compared to well-watered plants that were uninfested. These results indicate the potential that maize plants have to tolerate root herbivory by D. v. virgifera and that the effects were greater when soil moisture was reduced.

31P-magnetic resonance spectroscopy (31P-MRS) provides new biochemical information on mitochondrial disorders affecting brain and muscle. To elucidate the mechanisms of mitochondrial abnormalities, however, animal models are needed. We assessed the movbr (mottled viable brindled) mouse for its value in studying (1) energetics of a mitochondrial disorder and (2) 31P-MRS changes associated with mitochondrial abnormalities in vivo. The maximal activity of succinate-cytochrome c reductase was significantly reduced in movbr muscle compared to controls, whereas cytochrome oxidase activity was only reduced in movbr brain. 31P-MRS of movbr brain showed an increased pH, but no changes in any metabolite ratios. The phosphocreatine (PCr) recovery rate after exercise was reduced in muscles from movbr mice, indicating impairment of oxidative metabolism. We conclude that movbr brain and muscle tissue have biochemical abnormalities consistent with mitochondrial impairment. The PCr recovery rate, measured by 31P-MRS, was sensitive to the muscle abnormality. This strain is best described as having chronic mitochondrial dysfunction. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Two experiments were conducted to determine the effect of vitamin A supplementation on serum vitamin E in adult female northern fur seals (Callorhinus ursinus). In the first experiment five animals received, in addition to their routine dietary multivitamin supplement, a high-level vitamin A supplement (53 μmol retinyl palmitate/d) for 30 d. Five seals consuming their routine dietary supplement served as controls. Serum vitamin E decreased significantly in animals receiving high-level vitamin A supplements. At the end of 30 d serum vitamin E averaged 18.6 μg/mL in the control animals and 13.4 μg/mL in the animals receiving the high-Ieve1 vitamin A supplement. In experiment 2 ten animals received the high level vitamin A supplement for 60 d. After 30 d, serum vitamin E levels were reduced, but by 60 d had returned to baseline levels. However, the ratio of serum vitamin E to phospholipid, another index of vitamin E status, remained decreased. Although the exact mechanism of interaction is unknown, this study shows that when providing vitamin supplements for captive pinnipeds, vitamin interactions must be considered. The vitamin A supplementation currently used by some institutions seems unnecessary and may have detrimental effects on vitamin E status.

The case histories of 60 dogs with hyperadrenocorticism were reviewed. Fifty-four of the dogs were treated with mitotane at a mean daily dose rate of 48.8 mg/kg (range 25.6 to 84 mg/kg) for between four and 21 days. The mean weekly maintenance dose of mitotane was 48.8 mg/kg. An adrenocorticotrophic hormone (ACTH) stimulation test was performed before the treatment began, and in 30 cases at the end of the induction course, and the response to ACTH was measured at regular intervals thereafter. Nine of the treated dogs developed complete hypoadrenocorticism during treatment and required permanent mineralocorticoid replacement therapy. Twelve of the dogs had normal responses to an ACTH stimulation test before treatment, and the diagnosis of hyperadrenocorticism was based on the result of a low-dose dexamethasone suppression test. These 12 dogs had consistently lower cortisol levels before and after stimulation with ACTH and four of them developed complete hypoadrenocorticism. In general the clinical signs were well controlled when the cortisol levels were less than 105 nmol/litre before and after the stimulation test. Dogs in which the clinical signs recurred had cortisol levels between 210 and 580 nmol/litre after the test, a level which is within the normal pretreatment range. Twenty-seven of the treated dogs died and six of these deaths were attributable directly to the disease or therapy. The median survival time of the 54 treated dogs was 30 months; eight dogs died during the first 16 weeks of treatment, and the dogs which survived this period had a median survival time of 39 months (mean 50 months).

Eczema of the nipple is an important symptom presenting to the general surgeon in the out-patient department. The diagnosis of Paget's disease of the nipple has traditionally been made by incision biopsy necessitating at least a local anaesthetic. We present 14 patients with nipple skin change, in whom the technique of scrape cytology was used to identify patients with Paget's disease. In our series eight cases of Paget's disease were successfully identified by scrape cytology with no false negatives or positives. We suggest that this is a quick, easy, non-invasive method of screening eczema of the nipple in the out-patient clinic.

This paper describes the clinical and pathological features of 11 dogs with insulin-secreting tumours of the pancreas. All the dogs showed episodic weakness or collapse. The diagnosis was made on fasting plasma glucose and serum insulin concentrations, the insulimglucose ratio, and the results of an intravenous glucose tolerance test. Ten of the dogs had exploratory laparotomy, and partial pancreatectomy was performed in nine of the cases. One case was euthanased at surgery because of widespread metastases. The tumours were graded histologically and the results compared with the time to recurrence of clinical signs and postoperative survival time. Postoperative survival time for dogs which died or were euthanased as a direct result of tumour recurrence, and time to recurrence of clinical signs were calculated from actuarial survival curves. The median time to recurrence of clinical signs after surgery was 12 months (range from four to 16 months; mean time to recurrence of clinical signs 12 months). Two cases died of unrelated disease, without recurrence of hypoglycaemic signs. The median postoperative survival time was 14 months (range 10 to 33 months; mean survival time 15 months). There is a suggestion that tumours with a high mitotic count carried a worse prognosis.

This paper reports a case of blindness caused by secondary glaucoma and retinal detachment, resulting from a plasma cell myeloma in an eight-year-old, male, Jack Russell terrier.

Eleven cases of canine lymphoid leukaemia (10 acute and one chronic) were compared with 13 cases of canine lymphoma with bone marrow abnormalities, with regard to presentation, treatment and survival. Breed, age, and sex were similar for the two groups of dogs, but there was a marked difference in presenting signs, haematological parameters and bone marrow analysis, with the leukaemic dogs showing more severe changes. The clinicopathological features of these cases are reported in this paper and discussed with regard to prognosis. The mean survival time was significantly lower (43 days) in dogs treated for acute lymphoblastic leukaemia than for dogs treated for lymphoma with bone marrow abnormalities (351 days).

Concentrations of plasma adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), cortisol, and aldosterone were investigated in three adult beluga whales (Delphinapterus leucas), held in a large outdoor public aquarium exhibit. The purpose of this study was to evaluate resting concentrations of these hormones and associated diurnal variations with routine interactions and medical procedures. Resting blood samples were collected voluntarily from the ventral fluke veins at predetermined times of the day to evaluate diurnal changes in analyte concentrations. In addition, hematology and serum chemistry analyses were performed to monitor health status and evaluate changes related to physical exam procedures. Analogous sampling was conducted during out-of-water physical examinations and before and after wading-contact sessions (WCS). Baseline stress hormone concentrations (X ± SD) were as follows: plasma ACTH (8.41 ± 5.8 pg/mL), serum cortisol (1.80 ± 0.71 g/dL), and serum aldosterone (11.42 ± 5.5 pg/mL). Plasma ACTH and cortisol concentrations were consistently higher in early morning than evening, while aldosterone was higher in the evening. All stress-related hormones were significantly elevated during physical examination. Plasma ACTH concentrations were most increased, 5―10-fold, during physical examination, whereas cortisol and aldosterone showed 2—4—fold elevations. Stress response analytes measured during the WCS did not differ significantly from baseline concentrations.

Of 411 patients with palpable but clinically localized (Stages B or C) adenocarcinoma of the prostate, 100 (24.3%) were found at complete bilateral pelvic lymphadenectomy to have one or more lymph nodes positive for metastasis. These patients were divided into five subgroups on the basis of the location of the palpable tumor at digital rectal examination: left side only, left predominantly, both sides, right side predominantly, or right side only. Among 35 patients with positive nodes and a palpable tumor limited to one side of the prostate (clinically unilobar), metastases were found in the ipsilateral pelvic lymph nodes in 29 (83%). Only 6 (17%) of the patients had contralateral metastasis alone. A unilateral pelvic lymphadenectomy (ipsilateral to the side of the largest palpable tumor, or on either side if the tumor were bilateral) would have detected 80% of the patients with positive lymph nodes, with a positive predictive value of 100% and a negative predictive value of 94%. Lymph node metastases in patients with clinically localized palpable prostate cancer are most likely to be found on the same side as the palpable tumor and are considerably less likely to be found on the contralateral side alone. If frozen section examination of lymph nodes or laparoscopic lymph node dissection is planned before definitive therapy for prostate cancer, the pelvic lymph nodes ipsilateral to the side of the palpable tumor should be removed first.

Forty dogs referred to the University Department of Clinical Veterinary Medicine, Cambridge for medical and oncological conditions between 1985 and 1990 were found to be hypercalcaemia In 18 cases the primary or underlying condition was diagnosed as lymphoproliferative disease with multicentric lymphoma occurring most commonly. Ten dogs were suffering from hypoadrenocorticism (Addison's disease) and two had adenocarcinomas of the apocrine glands of the anal sac. In three dogs a clinical diagnosis of renal dysplasia was made, this diagnosis being confirmed at post mortem examination in one dog. In the remaining cases hypercalcaemia was associated with a primary lung tumour, a thymoma, an osteosarcoma with widespread skeletal metastases, primary hyperparathyroidism due to a parathyroid adenoma, chronic panniculitis, iatrogenic hypoadrenocorticism following mito-tane therapy (one case each] and, in a further case, no diagnosis was reached. The most common clinical signs were inappetence, polyuria/ polydipsia, weakness, vomiting, lethargy and depression. As a group, the dogs with lymphoproliferative disease had a significantly higher mean plasma calcium concentration (4-3 ± 0–7 vs 3–5 ± 0–4 mmol/litre), a significantly lower mean plasma inorganic phosphate concentration (1–5 ± 0–5 vs 2–4 ± 09 mmol/litre) and were significantly older (5-5 ± 2–4 vs 3-3 + 1–8 years) than the dogs with hypoadrenocorticism.

In a survey of 1864 isolates derived from samples of Phytophthora infestans obtained from potato and tomato collected in England and Wales between 1985 and 1988, the A2 mating type was identified in approximately 10% of samples. There was no evidence for an overall increase in the frequency of the A2 mating type over this period. In agar culture, A2 isolates exhibited a distinct lumpy-colony morphology. Lumps were made up of intensely dichotomously branched hyphae. The incidence of resistance to metalaxyl among samples increased from 41 to 60% between 1986 and 1988. Some of the A2 isolates were resistant to metalaxyl and like other A2 isolates gave rise to progeny from in vitro matings with Al isolates. Except in one case, Al and A2 isolates were uniformly homozygous at an isoenzyme locus for glucosephosphate isomerase but isolates exhibited some variation at a peptidase locus. The source of the A2 isolates could not be established from these data.

Ehlers Danlos Syndrome (EDS) is a collective term for a number of connective tissue disorders. Vascular rupture and dissection are well-documented sequelae as is gastrointestinal perforation. We present a rare presentation where dissection of the bowel wall presented as a suspected sigmoid colon tumour.

Neurological examination of a lethargic, ataxic 12-week-old dobermann revealed decreased conscious proprioception in all its limbs. Haematological examination revealed a low platelet count. Cytological examination of a sample of cerebrospinal fluid revealed evidence of haemorrhage and chronic inflammation. The levels of von Willebrand's factor antigen were extremely low. Skull radiographs were consistent with mild hydrocephalus. Treatment resulted in little clinical improvement and the animal was euthanased. Post mortem examination of the brain revealed an internal hydrocephalus with haemorrhage into the ventricles. It was considered that the animal had suffered severe intracranial haemorrhage as a result of its low level of von Willebrand's factor antigen and that the bleeding may have been potentiated by the low platelet count.
