Three studies tested a novel model of the narcissism-paranoia link, whereby narcissism (primarily its socially maladaptive facets) is associated with paranoia via over-use of defensive self-protection and/or under-use of self-affirmation.In Study 1, 245 online volunteers (87% female; MIn Study 1, narcissism was associated with higher paranoia via defensiveness. In Study 2, this was replicated in difficult but not pleasant events, and was driven by the Entitlement/Exploitativeness facet of narcissism. In Study 3, narcissistic rivalry and vulnerable narcissism, but not admiration, were associated with Cyberball-related paranoia via general defensiveness and denigration of others.Individuals high in narcissism-especially its socially maladaptive facets-who over-rely on defensive self-protection strategies in response to threat, are particularly vulnerable to paranoia. Findings help to understand individual differences in paranoia.

This research focused on existential and motivational implications of the emotion of nostalgia. Nostalgia (relative to control) increased meaning in life, which, in turn, galvanised intentions to pursue one’s most important goal (Experiment 1) and to pursue one’s most important, but not least important, goal (Experiment 2). The basic pattern held in two cultures (British and Danish) independently of positive affect. This is first evidence that nostalgia has specific motivational consequences (i.e., pursuit of more, but not less, important goals) and transmits these consequences via meaning in life. Also, this is first evidence that meaning is associated with specific motivational consequences. Discussion considers the relevance of the findings for the emotion and motivation literatures.

Although enhancing feedback was seen as more satisfying than useful, and improving feedback was not seen as more useful than satisfying, perceptions differed as a function of short-term versus long-term feedback delivery and assessment. Overall, however, enhancing feedback was more impactful psychologically and behaviorally. Enhancing feedback engendered greater success consistency, overall satisfaction and usefulness, optimism, state self-esteem, perceived ability, and test persistence intentions; improving feedback, on the other hand, engendered greater state improvement. The findings provide fodder for theory development and applications.

The chief difference between Frost’s same-sex and heterosexual couples was that same-sex couples experienced more stigma and discrimination. We discuss implications of these stressors for relationship outcomes and consider the role of attachment orientations. We also consider the imminent changes that might occur in these processes due to the legalization of same-sex marriage in the USA. In particular, we hope that stigma and discrimination against LGB couples might decrease, and that attachment security might increase, together reducing their vulnerabilities for relationship dissolution. Legalization of same-sex marriage should also provide new opportunities to investigate committed same-sex relationships alongside committed heterosexual relationships.

Of all the stages of development, the prenatal period has aroused little interest as a crucial time for development. However, rather than being a simple byproduct of maturation, fetal behavior promotes survival and the transition to the postnatal world. Moreover, prenatal sensory experience shapes the structure of the brain, beginning the development of neural processing capabilities required for interpreting key stimuli (e.g., language). To understand behavioral development completely, we must pay more attention to the formative influences of the prenatal period.

This paper reviews the evidence for lateralized motor behavior in the fetus around a number of key questions: does the fetus exhibit signs of laterality? when does lateralized motor behavior begin? is the lateralized preference consistently displayed? does prenatal handedness relate to postnatal handedness? and, does prenatal handedness relate to brain functioning? The evidence indicates that the fetus exhibits lateralized behavior from 10 weeks gestation, as soon as it independently moves its arms, and this is the precursor of lateralized motor behavior observed post-natally. Data is presented suggesting that the strength of laterality decreases with advancing gestation and this correlates with more efficient information processing as assessed by habituation. However extreme caution is warranted in attempting to link asymmetric motor behavior and brain function prenatally. The paper concludes that the initial developmental emergence of lateralized behavior is under genetic control and is a fundamental feature of prenatal human development. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The human fetus learns about its chemosensory environment and this influences its behavior at birth and during the nursing period. This study examined whether prenatal experience could influence behavior much later in life. The dietary preference of two groups of children (8- to 9-years old) was examined. Mothers of one group had consumed garlic during pregnancy, mothers of the control group had not. Children received two tests, 1 month apart, of a meal containing two portions of potato gratin, one flavored with garlic. The total amount of potato, and the percentage of garlic flavored potato, eaten was calculated and examined separately by ANOVA for factors of prenatal exposure, the child's sex, and trial. Children prenatally exposed to garlic ate significantly more garlic flavored potato and a significantly greater overall amount of potato on trial 2, compared to controls. The results demonstrate prenatal experience may affect behavior well into childhood.

Nevoid hyperkeratosis of the nipple and areola is a benign condition with fewer than 70 cases reported in the literature. We report a case of unilateral nevoid hyperkeratosis of the areola with intraepidermal lymphocytes that resembled Pautrier's microabscesses on histological examination. This is the third report of mycosis fungoides-like changes in nevoid hyperkeratosis of the nipple and areola. In addition, this is the first case to present immunohistochemical and T-cell gene rearrangement studies of the intraepidermal lymphocytes. This case highlights a potential histopathological pitfall in the diagnosis of nevoid hyperkeratosis of the nipple and areola. Rosman IS, Hepper DM, Lind AC, Anadkat MJ. Previous research has sought to establish the existence, or gauge the relative strength, of key self-evaluation motives (i.e., self-enhancement, self-verification, self-assessment, self-improvement). Here, we attempted, across five samples, to quantify individual differences in self-motive strength, and explore their empirical ramifications. We devised brief self-report indices for each self-motive, and checked their factor structure, reliability, and validity. We found that self-enhancement covaried mainly with self-verification, and that self-assessment covaried mainly with self-improvement, thus validating key hypotheses regarding their functional links. Moreover, self-enhancement and self-verification covaried with positive personality traits, as well as with preferences for receiving positive feedback and perceptions of its accuracy. In sum, self-reported variations in dispositional self-motive strength form theoretically meaningful patterns.

GaN HEMT reliability evaluation in a typical Arrhenius manner requires establishing peak junction temperature for a particular stress condition. Several new techniques have yielded promising results toward establishing peak temperature for these devices in combination with detailed physical modeling, particularly micro-Raman imaging. This paper compares results from finite element modeling to measurements by infrared imaging and micro-Raman imaging. The limitations of IR imaging were confirmed similar to earlier reports. Two techniques for establishing temperature from micro-Raman measurements were used to reveal excellent correlation to the model, and also provide insight into the relationship between temperature and structural change in the device. Temperature modeling data is reported for base plate temperature from 85°C to 250°C for practical GaN HEMT devices. Implications of the measurements for GaN HEMT reliability stress testing and analysis will be discussed. (© 2008 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)

Habituation is the decrement in response to repeated stimulation. Fetal habituation performance may reflect the functioning of the central nervous system (CNS) prenatally. However, basic characteristics of the prenatal habituation phenomena remain unclear, such as the relationship with gestational age (GA) and fetal sex. The current study investigated the relationship between habituation performance and both fetal sex and advancing gestational age, by comparing habituation performance at 31 and 35 weeks GA within a sample of 74 singleton pregnancies, all with normal neonatal outcomes. A vibroacoustic stimulus was used to habituate the fetus and motor responses were monitored via ultrasound. The criterion for habituation was defined as no response to five consecutive stimulus presentations. Prenatal habituation performance was found to demonstrate a developmental trend, with an increased proportion of fetuses habituating with advancing gestational age and requiring fewer stimulus presentations to satisfy the habituation criterion. Fetal sex also appears to have a moderating influence on gestational changes in habituation performance. Hence, the ongoing maturation of the fetal CNS does appear to be reflected in fetal habituation performance, indicating the need to consider the composition of fetal samples in terms of both gestational age and sex. Variability in interfetal performance was found to be high and clinical applications remain speculative.

Summary Despite recent political commitment to increasing access to all levels of health service provision for learning disabled people, there is still limited access to in-patient child psychiatric care for learning disabled children. This article describes the experiences of an in-patient unit integrating learning disabled children into a peer group, the majority of whom have normal intellectual function. A case note review was undertaken of all children with a global learning disability admitted to the Collingham Gardens in-patient Unit between January 2000 and December 2001. We discuss how similar services may be developed to be more inclusive for learning disabled children.

The present case report describes the arranged marriage of a Bangladeshi woman with moderate intellectual disability. It explores some of the social and cultural factors influencing the decision to arrange her marriage, and the dilemmas this presents in terms of bridging cultural differences between professional and lay concerns.

The prevalence of diseases suffered by dogs within two weeks of their acquisition from a rescue shelter in Northern Ireland was investigated. A postal questionnaire was completed by 556 people who had purchased a dog from the Ulster Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (USPCA) to provide information on the diseases suffered by their dog. The majority of the dogs (53.7 per cent) had an ailment the most common being coughing and diarrhoea. Of the respondents who returned their dog to the USPCA, 92 per cent did so because the animal was unhealthy. Stray dogs were more likely to have an ailment than unwanted dogs, specifically coughing, and/or skin problems. More puppies suffered from parvovirus, vomiting, and/or diarrhoea than did juveniles or adults. Adult dogs were more likely to have a cough than juveniles or puppies. There was no association between the sex of the dogs and their ailments.

Background Epidermal growth factor receptor inhibitors (EGFRIs) are anticancer agents that have been approved for use in a variety of solid tumors. EGFR-inhibiting agents produce a variety of cutaneous adverse events: most commonly a follicular papulopustular (acneiform) eruption on the face, scalp, chest and upper back. Objective The goal of this manuscript is to elucidate the histopathologic findings associated with this most common adverse event. Methods The histopathological findings of 10 patients with papulopustular eruptions induced by EGFRIs are described and compared to the four prior published case series of acneiform rashes attributed to EGFRIs. Results All 10 patients in our case series showed a superficial, predominantly neutrophilic suppurative folliculitis with ectatic follicular infundibula and rupture of the epithelial lining. Similar pathology was found in the four other case series discussing this phenomenon. Conclusion While the characteristic clinical appearance of this rash precludes the need for a biopsy in most cases, this knowledge promotes our understanding of the pathophysiologic process. As the use of EGFRIs expands, dermatopathologists will see these reactions more commonly and will need to recognize this pattern.

Whether fetal memory exists has attracted interest for many thousands of years. The following review draws on recent experimental evidence to consider two questions: does the fetus have a memory? And, if so, what function(s) does it serve? Evidence from fetal learning paradigms of classical conditioning, habituation and exposure learning reveal that the fetus does have a memory. By comparison little attention has been paid to the possible function of memory. Possible functions discussed are: practice, recognition of and attachment to the mother, promotion of breastfeeding, and language acquisition. It is concluded that the fetus does possess a memory but that more attention to the functions of fetal memory will guide future studies of fetal memory abilities.

People with different attachment orientations rely on different sources of self-esteem. This 14-day diary study examined the impact of different types of feedback on self-esteem for adults of different attachment orientations. Consistent with theory, higher (vs. lower) anxious participants’ daily self-esteem fluctuated more with daily interpersonal feedback conveying rejection or coming from a romantic partner; they also self-reported stronger reactions to idiosyncratic negative interpersonal feedback. Higher (vs. lower) avoidant participants showed weaker daily self-esteem fluctuation with positive interpersonal feedback, and those with a fearful-avoidant attachment pattern reported stronger reactions to positive agentic feedback. Self-reported emotional reactions mediated links between attachment dimensions and self-reported impact of feedback on self-evaluations. Results highlight the importance of affect-regulation strategies in influencing regulation of self-esteem.

Since 1981, when eye movements of the human fetus were first reported, the study of fetal eye movements has increased, mainly focusing on the ontogenesis of eye movements and as one parameter of behavioral states. Using real-time ultrasound, fetal eye movements can be clearly observed from 14 weeks of gestational age. Fetal eye movements may be described in terms of their pattern, frequency and incidence of periods containing eye movements and no eye movements. Furthermore, the relationship of eye movements to other behaviors may be used to give information on the integration of central nervous system function. A picture of normal fetal eye movements can be constructed and used to detect abnormalities in eye movements which can indicate underlying abnormalities of the central nervous system. This paper concludes that, although in its early stages, the study of fetal eye movements holds promise for a greater understanding of brain development and the assessment of the condition of the fetus.

This article approaches the topic of improvement from a self-evaluation perspective, namely the interplay between the self-improvement motive and social or evaluative feedback. The self-improvement motive is reflected in conscious desire. It is also reflected in preferences for continuous upward feedback trajectories, upward comparison feedback, and feedback that may be self-threatening in the present but is likely to be useful in the future. The last type of feedback preference is stronger following a resource-bolstering experience (e.g. good mood, success feedback, self-affirmation). Moreover, both direct and indirect activation of the self-improvement motive facilitates recall of improvement-oriented feedback. Such feedback is associated with increased satisfaction or positive affect, a pattern qualified by individual differences (e.g. self-esteem, self-theories). Finally, improvement-oriented feedback yields better performance, a pattern also qualified by individual differences (e.g. self-enhancement, self-appraisal) as well as feedback attributes (gradual vs. sudden). This territory-mapping review will hopefully prove useful to future theorizing and research.

Adults with different attachment orientations rely on different areas of life to maintain self-views. This paper reports two studies that examine the link between attachment and feedback-seeking patterns in interpersonal and competence-related domains. Participants in Study 1 imagined receiving feedback from a friend. Participants in Study 2 completed dyadic tasks and were promised feedback from interpersonal- and competence-relevant sources. Across both studies, secure individuals consistently chose the most positive feedback. Individuals high in attachment avoidance sought negative feedback over positive, although dismissing-avoidant individuals sought positive hypothetical feedback about autonomy. Study 2 further suggested that highly avoidant individuals were more open to negative feedback than positive feedback and than were secure individuals. Moreover, individuals high in attachment anxiety failed to seek positive interpersonal feedback but pursued interpersonal over competence feedback. Results highlight the role of feedback-seeking in maintenance of positive or negative self-views for adults with different attachment orientations.

A behavioral and structural analysis using ultrasound of a fetus suffering from Edwards syndrome is described. A number of structural anomalies were observed: the classic hand deformity, extended legs, diamond-shaped head, open mouth and a severe cardiac abnormality. A number of distinctive behavior patterns were observed: vertical eye movements, longitudinal rotation of the trunk, rotation of hands, tremor of extremities and pulsatile body movements, which are not usually seen in the normal fetus. The use of behavioral indicators in the diagnosis of abnormalities is discussed. We conclude that the analysis of behavior may make a significant contribution to the ultrasonographic diagnosis of handicap.
