Abstract The realization of highly operationally stable blue organic light‐emitting diodes (OLEDs) is a challenge in both academia and industry. This paper describes the development of anthracene–dibenzofuran host materials, 2‐(10‐(naphthalen‐1‐yl)anthracen‐9‐yl)naphtho[2,3‐b]benzofuran (Host 1) and 2‐(10‐([1,1′‐biphenyl]‐2‐yl)anthracen‐9‐yl)naphtho[2,3‐b]benzofuran (Host 2), namely for use in the emissive layer of an OLED stack. A multiple‐resonance thermally activated delayed serves as the blue fluorescence emitter and exhibits an initial luminance of 1000 cd m−2 and long operational stability (i.e., time to decay to 90% of initial luminance) of 249 h. Furthermore, a deep‐blue OLED with an optimized top‐emitting architecture with a high current efficiency of 154.3 cd A−1, is fabricated and calibrated to a Commission International de l’Éclairage y chromaticity coordinate of 0.048. Moreover, the emission spectrum of this OLED has a narrowband peak at 476 nm with a full width at half maximum (FWHM) of 16 nm. This work provides valuable insights into the design of anthracene‐based host materials and highlights the importance of host optimization in improving the operational stability of OLEDs.

Abstract The VCPIP1‐P97/VCP (Valosin‐Containing Protein) complex is required for post‐mitotic Golgi cisternae reassembly and maintenance in interphase. However, the organization and mechanism of this complex in regulating Golgi membrane fusion is still elusive. Here, the cryo‐electron microscopy (cryo‐EM) structures of the human VCPIP1‐P97/VCP complex are presented. These studies reveal that three independent VCPIP1 molecules sit over the C‐terminal substrate exit tunnel formed by P97/VCP homo‐hexamer, resulting in an unusual C3 to C6 symmetric barrel architecture. The UFD1 (unknown function domain 1) from VCPIP1, but not the N‐terminal OTU domain and the C‐terminal UBL domain, docks to the two adjacent D2 domains of P97/VCP, allosterically causing the cofactors binding domain‐NTDs (N‐terminal domains) of P97/VCP in a “UP” and D1 domain in an ATPase competent conformation. Conversely, VCPIP1 bound P97/VCP hexamer favors the binding of P47, and thus the intact SNARE complex, promoting Golgi membrane fusion. These studies not only reveal the unexpected organization of humanVCPIP1‐P97/VCP complex, but also provide new insights into the mechanism of VCPIP1‐P97/VCP mediated Golgi apparatus reassembly, which is a fundamental cellular event for protein and lipid processing.

Abstract Multiplexing technology creates several orthogonal data channels and dimensions for high‐density information encoding and is irreplaceable in large‐capacity information storage, and communication, etc. The multiplexing dimensions are constructed by light attributes and spatial dimensions. However, limited by the degree of freedom of interaction between light and material structure parameters, the multiplexing dimension exploitation method is still confused. Herein, a 7D Spin‐multiplexing technique is proposed. Spin structures with four independent attributes (color center type, spin axis, spatial distribution, and dipole direction) are constructed as coding basic units. Based on the four independent spin physical effects, the corresponding photoluminescence wavelength, magnetic field, microwave, and polarization are created into four orthogonal multiplexing dimensions. Combined with the 3D of space, a 7D multiplexing method is established, which possesses the highest dimension number compared with 6 dimensions in the previous study. The basic spin unit is prepared by a self‐developed laser‐induced manufacturing process. The free state information of spin is read out by four physical quantities. Based on the multiple dimensions, the information is highly dynamically multiplexed to enhance information storage efficiency. Moreover, the high‐dynamic in situ image encryption/marking is demonstrated. It implies a new paradigm for ultra‐high‐capacity storage and real‐time encryption.

There has been increasing application of autologous costal chondral/osteochondral transplantation (ACCT/ACOT) and costa‐derived chondrocyte implantation (ACCI) for articular cartilage repair over the past three decades. This review presents the major evidence on the properties of costal cartilage and bone and their qualifications as grafts for articular cartilage repair, the major clinical applications, and the risks and strategies for costal chondral/osteochondral graft(s) harvest. First, costal cartilage has many specific properties that help restore the articular surface. Costa, which can provide abundant cartilage and cylindrical corticocancellous bone, preserves permanent chondrocyte and is the largest source of hyaline cartilage. Second, in the past three decades, autologous costal cartilage‐derived grafts, including cartilage, osteochondral graft(s), and chondrocyte, have expanded their indications in trauma and orthopaedic therapy from small to large joints, from the upper to lower limbs, and from non‐weight‐bearing to weight‐bearing joints. Third, the rate of donor‐site complications of ACCT or ACOT is low, acceptable, and controllable, and some skills and accumulated experience can help reduce the risks of ACCT and ACOT. Costal cartilage‐derived autografting is a promising technique and could be an ideal option for articular chondral lesions with or without subchondral cysts. More high‐quality clinical studies are urgently needed to help us further understand the clinical value of such technologies.

Abstract The interplay between bacteria and their host influences the homeostasis of the human immune microenvironment, and this reciprocal interaction also affects the process of tissue damage repair. A variety of immunomodulatory commensal bacteria reside in the body, capable of delivering membrane vesicles (MVs) to host cells to regulate the local immune microenvironment. This research revealed, for the initial time, the significant enhancement of mucosal and cutaneous wound healing by MVs secreted by the human commensal Lactobacillus reuteri (RMVs) through modulation of the inflammatory environment in wound tissue. Local administration of RMVs reduces the proportion of pro‐inflammatory macrophages in inflamed tissues and mitigates the level of local inflammation, thereby facilitating the healing of oral mucosa and cutaneous wounds. The elevated oxidative stress levels in activated pro‐inflammatory macrophages can be modulated by RMVs, resulting in phenotypic transformation of macrophages. Furthermore, 3‐hydroxypropionaldehyde present in RMVs can decrease the mitochondrial permeability of macrophages and stabilize the mitochondrial membrane potential, thereby promoting the conversion of macrophages to an anti‐inflammatory phenotype. This study pioneers the significance of commensal bacterial MVs in tissue injury repair and presents a novel concept for the repair of tissue damage.

Abstract Accurately measuring emission factors (Es) of biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOCs) with consideration of intraspecific variability is vital but often overlooked. This study presents in‐situ measurements of BVOC emissions from 114 Eucalyptus urophylla individuals using the LI‐6800 portable photosynthesis system. We observed intraspecific variability exceeding an order of magnitude in BVOC Es. Despite this variability, our approach yielded statistically representative Es for E. urophylla, yet challenging the feasibility of extensive field measurements. By quickly screening net photosynthesis rate (Pn) across a broad set of individuals and selecting those within a specific Pn range, such as mean ± 0.1 × SD (standard deviation) of Pn for all screened individuals, for detailed BVOC emission measurements, we achieved comparable mean Es with approximately 10% of the original sampling effort. This offers a practical solution for efficient and accurate field measurement of representative BVOC Es, significantly reducing required sample size while effectively addressing intraspecific variability.

Objective Osteochondral lesions of the talus (OLT) is a common and clinically challenging disease. The optimal management is still under debate. The purpose of this prospective study was to investigate the feasibility and clinical outcomes of autologous costal osteochondral transplantation (ACOT) for the treatment of cystic OLT. Methods From November 2021 to April 2023, five patients underwent autologous costal osteochondral transplantation (ACOT) for cystic OLT. The demographic data was described, including age, gender, lesion size and location. We prospectively evaluated their functional and imaging outcomes of the five patients for 12 months postoperatively, including numeric rating score (NRS) for pain when walking, Tegner score, American Orthopedic Foot & Ankle Society (AOFAS) score and Foot and Ankle Ability Measure (FAAM) score, and imaging results. A paired t‐test was used for preoperative and postoperative comparison of the paired‐design dataset. Results The average age was 36.6 ± 11.1 years. The average diameter of chondral lesions was 14.95 ± 2.71 mm, the average diameter of subchondral cysts was 10.66 ± 1.84 mm, and their average depth was 10.40 ± 1.86 mm. At 12 months postoperatively, the clinical function indexes improved significantly, including NRS (from 5.2 ± 2.3 to 0), Tegner score (from 3.2 ± 0.4 to 5.8 ± 0.4), AOFAS score (from 72.8 ± 10.0 to 98.2 ± 4.0), and FAAM score (FAAM/ADL from 61.2 ± 24.7 to 99.3 ± 1.6; FAAM/Sports from 32.5 ± 13.73 to 96.3 ± 8.4). Their magnetic resonance observation of cartilage repair tissue (MOCART) scores reached 78.0 ± 7.6 points. ICRS scores of three patients were nearly normal (10 or 11 points). The biopsy of the surviving grafts showed plenty of hyaline cartilage matrix and scattered chondrocytes histologically. No major severe complications were reported during the 12 months follow‐up. Conclusion ACOT could significantly relieve the symptoms of patients with OLT and improve their clinical function at short‐term follow‐up. ACOT might be a feasible and useful method for repairing OLT with subchondral cysts.

Objective There is a new medial malleolar fracture classification based on 3D CT reconstruction. However, there is no study assessing the reliability and accuracy of the new classification system and comparison between the new and the classic classification. This study aimed to compare the reliability and accuracy of the medial malleolar fracture classification based on 3D CT reconstruction and the Herscovici classification system. Methods We retrospectively analyzed the consecutive ankle fractures in our hospital from January 2013 to September 2020. Five inexperienced and five experienced orthopedic surgeons were included as observers to assess 68 cases with medial malleolar fractures. Ten evaluators classified the cases according to the two classification systems. The reference results of each case were made by the consensus of three senior trauma surgeons. The interobserver reliability, intraobserver reliability, and accuracy were evaluated at an interval of 6 weeks using Fleiss's kappa (κ) statistics. Objective The effectiveness of autologous osteoperiosteal transplantation (AOPT) for the treatment of large cystic talar osteochondral lesions (OCLs) should be further evaluated, and the postoperative cartilage coverage is questionable. The purpose of this retrospective observational study was to investigate the clinical outcomes of AOPT for the treatment of large cystic talar OCLs and to report second‐look arthroscopic results. Methods From June 1, 2017, to June 1, 2021, all talar OCLs at our center were reviewed. Painful cystic lesions treated with AOPT were included in the study. The American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS; 0–100 points) ankle‐hindfoot score, Foot Function Index (FFI; 0–100 points), visual analog scale (VAS; 0–10 points) score, and Tegner score (0–10 points) were used to describe pain and functional outcomes. Furthermore, complications, patient‐reported satisfaction degrees, imaging results (including computed tomography and magnetic resonance), and second‐look arthroscopic evaluation data were also collected for analysis. Results A total of 29 cases were eligible for the study, and 26 responded to the latest follow‐up request, with a mean follow‐up duration of 30.2 (range, 12–57) months. The AOFAS score improved from 69.2 ± 10.9 preoperatively to 80.9 ± 10.0 at the latest follow‐up (p = 0.000). The FFI score improved from 30.4 ± 18.4 preoperatively to 16.3 ± 14.0 at the latest follow‐up (p = 0.000). The VAS pain score improved from 4.0 ± 2.1 preoperatively to 2.5 ± 2.0 at the latest follow‐up (p = 0.001). No donor site morbidity was found. The mean postoperative MOCART score was 57.7 ± 9.5. Second‐look arthroscopy showed a fibrillated cartilage‐like surface at the lesion site in most cases, while two cases exhibited a nearly normal surface. Conclusion The transplantation of osteoperiosteal cylinder autografts taken from the iliac crest for the treatment of large cystic talar OCLs yielded acceptable clinical results. Good integration of the bony part was observed, but cartilage regeneration remained uncertain.

Abstract In medical image segmentation, the neural network structure of the U‐Net family has demonstrated sufficient advantages. However, MRI images have different scan parameters and different scan times, resulting in different feature representation of the images. Furthermore, there is a great class imbalance between bone and cartilage tissues in MRI knee images. To address these issues, a region‐based two‐stage MRI knee bone tissue segmentation network is proposed in this paper. The segmentation network makes full use of the location characteristics of the three types of bone tissue in the knee joint and uses a two‐stage network architecture with a modified U2‐Net backbone network to segment MRI knee bone tissue. The neural network structure is divided into two phases, the first phase with a simple coded decoding structure for saliency detection to obtain the positional regional relationships of different bone tissues, and the second phase with a segmentation network consisting of 2 modified U2‐Net, one for segmenting the patella and associated cartilage and the other for segmenting the femur, tibia and associated cartilage. The algorithm was tested with a variety of MRI knee data to verify the effectiveness of the algorithm.

Abstract Screening corn ear is the key link in the breeding process of new varieties. But manual testing is difficult to measure the proportion of abnormal area. Meanwhile, the abnormal areas are mainly caused by mildew, moth and mechanical collision. A new refined semantic segmentation model was proposed based on the semi‐supervised learning method of generating antagonistic networks (GAN). Besides k‐means algorithm was used to remove a large amount of background information for data preprocessing. By using feature fusion and weighted loss function the model performance was improved. The introduction of transfer learning accelerated model convergence. Through the high‐throughput corn ear collection system, 1448 ear images (including abnormal conditions such as mildew, moth and mechanical damage) were collected and labelled. The proposed method was tested on real corn ear images with an accuracy of 0.950, mean precision of 0.933, mean IoU of 0.884, and FwIoU of 0.908. Experimental results show that the proposed method has better performance than general networks.

Abstract Polyphagous aphids often consist of host‐specialized lineages, which have greater fitness on their native hosts than on others. The underlying causes are important for understanding of the evolution of diet breadth and host shift of aphids. The cotton‐melon aphid Aphis gossypii Glover is extremely polyphagous with many strict host‐specialized lineages. Whether and how the lineage specialized on the primary host hibiscus shifts to the secondary host cucumber remains elusive. We found that the hibiscus‐specialized lineage suffered high mortality and gave birth to very few nymphs developing into yellow dwarfs on fresh cucumber leaves, and did not inflict any damage symptoms on cucumber plants. The poor performance did not improve with prolonged exposure to cucumber; however, it did significantly improve when the cucumber leaves were pre‐infected with a biotrophic phytopathogen Pseudoperonospora cubensis. More importantly, the hibiscus‐specialized lineage with two‐generation feeding experience on pre‐infected cucumber leaves performed as well as the cucumber‐specialized lineage did on fresh cucumber leaves, and inflicted typical damage symptoms on intact cucumber plants. Electrical penetration graph (EPG) indicated that the hibiscus‐specialized lineage did not ingest phloem sap from fresh cucumber leaves but succeeded in ingesting phloem sap from pre‐infected cucumber leaves, which explained the performance improvement of the hibiscus‐specialized lineage on pre‐infected cucumber leaves. This study revealed a new pathway for the hibiscus‐specialized lineage to quickly acclimate to cucumber under the assistance of the phytopathogen. We considered that the short feeding experience on pre‐infected cucumber may activate expression of effector genes that are related to specific host utilization. We suggest to identify host‐specific effectors by comparing proteomes or/and transcriptomes of the hibiscus‐specialized lineage before and after acclimating to cucumber.

Abstract Inflammation plays a crucial role in triggering regeneration, while inadequate or chronic inflammation hinders the regenerative process, resulting in refractory wounds. Inspired by the ideal regeneration mode in lower vertebrates and the human oral mucosa, realigning dysregulated inflammation to a heightened and acute response provides a promising option for refractory wound therapy. Neutrophils play important roles in inflammation initiation and resolution. Here, a hybrid biomaterial is used to stimulate transiently heightened inflammatory responses by precise tempospatial regulation of neutrophil recruitment and apoptosis. The hybrid biomaterial (Gel@fMLP/SiO2‐FasL) is constructed by loading of formyl‐met‐leu‐phe (fMLP) and FasL‐conjugated silica nanoparticles (SiO2‐FasL) into a pH‐responsive hydrogel matrix. This composition enables burst release of fMLP to rapidly recruit neutrophils for heightened inflammation initiation. After neutrophils act to produce acids, the pH‐responsive hydrogel degrades to expose SiO2‐FasL, which induces activated neutrophils apoptosis via FasL‐Fas signaling triggering timely inflammation resolution. Apoptotic neutrophils are subsequently cleared by macrophages, and this efferocytosis activates key signalings to promote macrophage anti‐inflammatory phenotypic transformation to drive regeneration. Ultimately, Gel@fMLP/SiO2‐FasL successfully promotes tissue regeneration by manipulating inflammation in critical‐sized calvarial bone defects and diabetic cutaneous wound models. This work provides a new strategy for refractory wound therapy via inducing transiently heightened inflammatory responses.

Objective To compare the efficacy and safety of the postoperative long‐term effect of the treatment of single‐level cervical spondylosis through anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) and artificial cervical disc replacement (ACDR). Methods This is a retrospective contrastive study, which was conducted for the period of January 2007 and January 2009 at the Department of Spine Surgery of the First Affiliated Hospital of Xinjiang Medical University. A total of 113 patients were divided into two groups depending on the operation method: ACDF group (fusion group, n = 66) and ACDR group (replacement group, n = 47). The ACDR group comprised of 23 males and 24 females. The age of these patients ranged from 31–60 years, with an average age of 42.89 ± 6.30 years. The ACDF group comprised of 38 males and 28 females. The age of these patients ranged from 28–73 years old, with an average age of 49.38 ± 9.89 years old. The evaluation index included the visual analogue scale (VAS), neck disability index (NDI), range of motion, dysphagia, adjacent vertebral disease, and related complications (prosthesis displacement, heterotopic ossification, etc.). Results A total of 113 patients met the inclusion criteria, and these patients receive more than 96 months of follow‐up. The VAS and NDI of these two groups of patients significantly improved, when compared with those before the operation. In the last follow‐up visit, the range of motion in the ACDR group and ACDF group was 43.22 ± 3.58 and 32.54 ± 2.82, respectively, and both are significantly different comparing to the values measured before the operation (P 0.05). Conclusion Overall, the clinical efficacy and related complication rate of single‐level cervical spondylosis after an anterior cervical approach operation was superior in the ACDR group when compared to the ACDF group.

Objective To comprehensively assess the differences in outcome between open reduction and closed reduction for children and adolescents with femoral neck fractures. Methods Based on the predetermined strategies, eligible studies were obtained by searching Embase, the Cochrane Library, and PubMed databases (retrieval time: June 2018) and through manual retrieval for paper documents. The 95% confidence intervals (CI) and risk ratios (RR) were used as evaluation indexes. Moreover, the results of avascular necrosis, coxa vara, or non‐union were compared between open reduction and closed reduction under random or fixed effects models. After sensitivity analysis was carried out, publication bias was evaluated for the eligible studies using Egger's test. Results Six studies were included in our meta‐analysis. No significant heterogeneity was found among the included studies (P ≥ 0.05) and, thus, the fixed effects model was used for merging the effect sizes of avascular necrosis (RR [95% CI] = 0.50 [0.26, 0.98], P = 0.04), coxa vara (RR [95% CI] = 0.16 [0.04, 0.70], P = 0.01), and non‐union (RR [95% CI] = 0.22 [0.05, 0.93], P = 0.04). Sensitivity analysis suggested that the results of avascular necrosis were not stable (RR = 0.50, 95% CI = 0.25 1.17, P = 0.12), while those of coxa vara and non‐union were stable. There was no significant publication bias among the eligible studies (t = −0.70, P = 0.522). Conclusion Femoral neck fractures treated by open reduction had less adverse outcomes compared with those treated by closed reduction.

Abstract The balance between antioxidants and reactive oxygen species (ROS) critically regulates tumor initiation and progression. However, whether and how the tumor‐favoring redox status is controlled by cytokine networks remain poorly defined. Here, it is shown that IL‐36γ and IL‐36Ra reciprocally regulate the progression of non‐small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) by modulating glutathione metabolism and ROS resolution. Knockout, inhibition, or neutralization of IL‐36γ significantly inhibits NSCLC progression and prolongs survival of the KrasLSL‐G12D/+Tp53fl/fl and KrasLSL‐G12D/+Lkb1fl/fl mice after tumor induction, whereas knockout of IL‐36Ra exacerbates tumorigenesis in these NSCLC mouse models and accelerates death of mice. Mechanistically, IL‐36γ directly upregulates an array of genes involved in glutathione homeostasis to reduce ROS and prevent oxidative stress‐induced cell death, which is mitigated by IL‐36Ra or IL‐36γ neutralizing antibody. Consistently, IL‐36γ staining is positively and negatively correlated with glutathione biosynthesis and ROS in human NSCLC tumor biopsies, respectively. These findings highlight essential roles of cytokine networks in redox for tumorigenesis and provide potential therapeutic strategy for NSCLC.

Abstract Introduction As aging attracted attention globally, revealing changes in brain function across the lifespan was largely concerned. In this study, we aimed to reveal the changes of functional networks of the brain (via local functional connectivity, local FC) in lifespan and explore the mechanism underlying them. Materials and Methods A total of 523 healthy participants (258 males and 265 females) aged 18–88 years from part of the Cambridge Center for Ageing and Neuroscience (CamCAN) were involved in this study. Next, two data‐driven measures of local FC, local functional connectivity density (lFCD) and four‐dimensional spatial‐temporal consistency of local neural activity (FOCA), were calculated, and then, general linear models were used to assess the changes of them in lifespan. Results Local functional connectivity (lFCD and FOCA) within visual networks (VN), sensorimotor network (SMN), and default mode network (DMN) decreased across the lifespan, while within basal ganglia network (BGN), local connectivity was increased across the lifespan. And, the fluid intelligence decreased within BGN while increased within VN, SMN, and DMN. Conclusion These results might suggest that the decline of executive control and intrinsic cognitive ability in the aging population was related to the decline of functional connectivity in VN, SMN, and DMN. Meanwhile, BGN might play a regulatory role in the aging process to compensate for the dysfunction of other functional systems. Our findings may provide important neuroimaging evidence for exploring the brain functional mechanism in lifespan.

Scale‐invariant feature transform (SIFT) operator is a widely used algorithm to detect local features in images, yet applying this algorithm for motion‐blurred image matching is difficult and inefficient. To resolve this issue, this study presents a motion‐blurred invariant SIFT algorithm that is based on sample matching in an image deformation reconstructed space. First, the motion‐blurred equation is deduced and its controlling parameters to reconstruct the deformation space are discretised. Second, the authors matched samples in the motion‐blurred space with the blurred image to identify maximal matching points and optimal parameters. In order to improve the searching efficiency, the authors used a univariate search technique combined with a variable step hill‐climbing method to determine the optimal matching. Together, the experimental results show that this improved algorithm has superior matching performance for motion‐blurred images.
