Abstract Our objectives were to ascertain the following: (1) the prevalence and socioeconomic distribution of hypertension (HTN), undiagnosed for HTN, and untreated cases of HTN‐diagnosed individuals; (2) the relationship between SES and the prevalence of HTN, undiagnosed for HTN, and untreated for HTN; and (3) whether sex moderate this association. Data from the 2017–18 Bangladesh Demographic Health Survey were used. 11,776 participants who were 18 years of age or older responded to our analysis. The age‐adjusted prevalence of HTN, undiagnosed for HTN, and untreated cases was 25.1%, 57.2%, and 12.3%. Compared to females, males were less likely to have HTN but more likely to have undiagnosed HTN. People in the rich SES groups had a higher odd of (adjusted odds ratio [aoR] 1.25; 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.08–3.45) of having HTN compared to those in the poor SES group. When compared to individuals in the poor SES group, those in the rich SES group had lower odds of undiagnosed (aoR 0.57; 95% CI 0.44–0.74) and untreated (aoR 0.56; 95% CI 0.31–0.98) for HTN. Sex moderated the association between SES and HTN prevalence, which showed that men from rich SES were more likely to suffer from HTN than men from poor SES. According to this study, the government and other pertinent stakeholders should concentrate more on developing suitable policy measures to reduce the risk of HTN, particularly for men in rich socioeconomic groups. They should also concentrate on screening and diagnosing HTN in socioeconomically disadvantaged populations, regardless of sex.

Abstract Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disorder with a varying range of organs involved leading to adverse outcomes. However, very little is known, with conflicting results about the association between RA and atrial fibrillation (AF). We aim to evaluate the association between RA and AF, and other clinical outcomes. We performed a systematic literature search using PubMed, Embase, and Scopus for relevant articles from inception until September 10, 2023. Primary clinical outcomes were AF. Secondary outcomes were acute coronary syndrome (ACS), stroke, and all‐cause mortality (ACM). A total of 4 679 930 patients were included in the analysis, with 81 677 patients in the RA group and 4 493 993 patients in the nonrheumatoid arthritis (NRA) group. The mean age of the patients was 57.2 years. This rare association highlights the importance of strict arrhythmia management, prophylactic anticoagulation, and timely diagnosis to prevent debilitating neurological outcomes.

Abstract Background Calycosin may be a potential candidate regarding chemotherapeutic agent, because already some studies against multivarious cancer have been made with this natural compound. Aim This review elucidated a brief overview of previous studies on calycosin potential effects on various cancers and its potential mechanism of action. Methodology Data retrieved by systematic searches of Google Scholar, PubMed, Science Direct, Web of Science, and Scopus by using keywords including calycosin, cancer types, anti‐cancer mechanism, synergistic, and pharmacokinetic and commonly used tools are BioRender, ChemDraw Professional 16.0, and ADMETlab 2.0. Results Based on our review, calycosin is available in nature and effective against around 15 different types of cancer. Generally, the anti‐cancer mechanism of this compound is mediated through a variety of processes, including regulation of apoptotic pathways, cell cycle, angiogenesis and metastasis, oncogenes, enzymatic pathways, and signal transduction process. These study conducted in various study models, including in silico, in vitro, preclinical and clinical models. The molecular framework behind the anti‐cancer effect is targeting some oncogenic and therapeutic proteins and multiple signaling cascades. Therapies based on nano‐formulated calycosin may make excellent nanocarriers for the delivery of this compound to targeted tissue as well as particular organ. This natural compound becomes very effective when combined with other natural compounds and some standard drugs. Moreover, proper use of this compound can reverse resistance to existing anti‐cancer drugs through a variety of strategies. Calycosin showed better pharmacokinetic properties with less toxicity in human bodies. Conclusion Calycosin exhibits excellent potential as a therapeutic drug against several cancer types and should be consumed until standard chemotherapeutics are available in pharma markets.

This study aims to improve the biopharmaceutical, mechanical, and tableting properties of a poorly soluble drug, ibuprofen (IBP), by preparing amorphous solid dispersion (ASD) followed by a sustained-release tablet formulation. A suitable polymer to develop an ASD system was chosen by utilizing the apparent solubility of IBP in various polymer solutions. ASDs containing various ratios of IBP and selected polymer were prepared by the melt fusion (MF) method. ASD containing optimized drug-polymer ratio prepared by freeze-drying (FD) method was characterized and compared physicochemically. The solubility of IBP in water increased 28-fold and 35-fold when formulated as ASD by MF and FD, respectively. Precise formulations showed amorphization of IBP and increased surface area, improving solubility. The dissolution pattern of optimized ASD-IBP in pH 6.8 phosphate buffer after 60 min in MF and FD was enhanced 3-fold. In addition, direct compression tablets comprising optimized ASD granules from MF and FD were made and assessed using compendial and noncompendial methods. ASD-IBP/MF and ASD-IBP/FD formulations showed a similar drug release profile. In addition, 12 h of sustained IBP release from the ASD-IBP-containing tablets was obtained in a phosphate buffer with a pH of 6.8. From the dissolution kinetics analysis, the Weibull model fitted well. The drug release pattern indicated minimal variations between tablets formed using ASD-IBP prepared by both procedures; however, pre- and postcompression assessment parameters differed. From these findings, the application of ASD and sustained-release polymers in matrix formation might be beneficial in improving the solubility and absorption of poorly soluble drugs such as IBP.

Nowadays, the search for new chemotherapeutic agents with low toxicity and high selectivity is a major concern. In this paper, we report the synthesis and characterization of a hybrid thiosemicarbazone/hydrazone ligand in its neutral form (L1H2) and as the chloride salt ([L1H3]Cl)-, three diorganotin (IV) complexes, and one complex with Sn (IV). The compounds have been fully characterized by IR, mass spectra, 1H, 13C, and 119Sn NMR, 119Sn CP/MAS NMR, and by single crystal X-ray diffraction. The organotin compounds have the empirical formula [SnR2L1] (R = Me, Bu, and Ph), but in the solid state, they are polymeric species with seven coordination number due to weak coordination of the pyridine nitrogen, whereas in solution, the polymeric structure is lost to afford hexacoordinate monomeric species. Reaction with SnI4 yields complex [Sn (L1)2]·EtOH, with the metal in a distorted dodecahedral arrangement. We have evaluated the antiproliferative activity of the two forms of the ligands and the four coordination compounds against MDA-MB-231, HeLa, PC3, and HepG2 cancer cell lines, and WI-38 normal cell line, and all the compounds present higher activity than cisplatin, used as the standard control. To investigate the mode of action, we have selected the most active complex, containing phenyl substituents, and used the triple negative breast cancer cell line MDA-MB-231. The results show that the complex induces apoptotic cell death promoted by generation of reactive oxygen species and by disruption of mitochondrial membrane potential.

Key Clinical Message The incidence of nontuberculous mycobacterial (NTM) infections after operations is increasing in Bangladesh but data regarding clinical presentation, diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis after treatment are lacking. In this case series, three patients having persistent serous discharge from incision wound after operation were studied. Discharge from wounds were collected, wet film microscopy was performed for pus cells and fungus, Gram stain, Ziehl‐Neelsen (ZN) stain, culture in routine culture media and Lowenstein‐Jensen (LJ) media, Xene‐Xpert for mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB), polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for NTM were done. NTM‐positive patients were treated initially for 6 weeks with four drugs regimen (clarithromycin 500 mg 12 hourly, ciprofloxacin 500 mg 12 hourly, linezolid 400 mg 12 hourly, and amikacin 500 mg 12 hourly), followed by 5 months with three drugs regimen (clarithromycin 500 mg 12 hourly, ciprofloxacin 500 mg 12 hourly, and linezolid 400 mg 12 hourly) as a maintenance dose. Cessation of discharge occurred within 3–4 weeks after starting treatment, and the wounds were healed.

Abstract Improvement of end‐use quality remains one of the most important goals in hard winter wheat (HWW) breeding. Nevertheless, the evaluation of end‐use quality traits is confined to later development generations owing to resource‐intensive phenotyping. Genomic selection (GS) has shown promise in facilitating selection for end‐use quality; however, lower prediction accuracy (PA) for complex traits remains a challenge in GS implementation. Multi‐trait genomic prediction (MTGP) models can improve PA for complex traits by incorporating information on correlated secondary traits, but these models remain to be optimized in HWW. A set of advanced breeding lines from 2015 to 2021 were genotyped with 8725 single‐nucleotide polymorphisms and was used to evaluate MTGP to predict various end‐use quality traits that are otherwise difficult to phenotype in earlier generations. The MTGP model outperformed the ST model with up to a twofold increase in PA. For instance, PA was improved from 0.38 to 0.75 for bake absorption and from 0.32 to 0.52 for loaf volume. Further, we compared MTGP models by including different combinations of easy‐to‐score traits as covariates to predict end‐use quality traits. Incorporation of simple traits, such as flour protein (FLRPRO) and sedimentation weight value (FLRSDS), substantially improved the PA of MT models. Thus, the rapid low‐cost measurement of traits like FLRPRO and FLRSDS can facilitate the use of GP to predict mixograph and baking traits in earlier generations and provide breeders an opportunity for selection on end‐use quality traits by culling inferior lines to increase selection accuracy and genetic gains.

Inspired by the unique neurophysiology of the octopus, a hierarchical framework is proposed that simplifies the coordination of multiple soft arms by decomposing control into high‐level decision‐making, low‐level motor activation, and local reflexive behaviors via sensory feedback. When evaluated in the illustrative problem of a model octopus foraging for food, this hierarchical decomposition results in significant improvements relative to end‐to‐end methods. Performance is achieved through a mixed‐modes approach, whereby qualitatively different tasks are addressed via complementary control schemes. Herein, model‐free reinforcement learning is employed for high‐level decision‐making, while model‐based energy shaping takes care of arm‐level motor execution. To render the pairing computationally tenable, a novel neural network energy shaping (NN‐ES) controller is developed, achieving accurate motions with time‐to‐solutions 200 times faster than previous attempts. The hierarchical framework is then successfully deployed in increasingly challenging foraging scenarios, including an arena littered with obstacles in 3D space, demonstrating the viability of the approach.

Abstract Preferred orientation in polycrystalline materials is one of the most challenging problems for structural analysis. Significant preferred orientation can severely affect the structure‐property analysis of the systems having substantial crystallographic anisotropy. Here, an extremely high degree of preferred orientation has been demonstrated in R‐block hollandite hexagonal PbFexV6−xO11 compounds, which has recently been shown to exhibit an unusual colossal electroresistance response that has a strong dependence on structural modifications. The present results warn against possible errors in understanding the evolution of the crystal structure of these hollandites, which might adversely affect the estimation of the influence of the same on their spectacular physical properties.

In glioblastoma (GBM), tumour‐associated microglia/macrophages (TAMs) represent the major cell type of the stromal compartment and contribute to tumour immune escape mechanisms. Thus, targeting TAMs is emerging as a promising strategy for immunotherapy. However, TAM heterogeneity and metabolic adaptation along GBM progression represent critical features for the design of effective TAM‐targeted therapies. Here, we comprehensively study the cellular and molecular changes of TAMs in the GL261 GBM mouse model, combining single‐cell RNA‐sequencing with flow cytometry and immunohistological analyses along GBM progression and in the absence of Acod1 (also known as Irg1), a key gene involved in the metabolic reprogramming of macrophages towards an anti‐inflammatory phenotype. Similarly to patients, we identify distinct TAM profiles, mainly based on their ontogeny, that reiterate the idea that microglia‐ and macrophage‐like cells show key transcriptional differences and dynamically adapt along GBM stages. Notably, we uncover decreased antigen‐presenting cell features and immune reactivity in TAMs along tumour progression that are instead enhanced in Acod1‐deficient mice. Overall, our results provide insight into TAM heterogeneity and highlight a novel role for Acod1 in TAM adaptation during GBM progression.

Abstract The introduction of vacancy defects in semiconductors has been proven to be a highly effective approach to improve their photocatalytic activity owing to their advantages of promoting light absorption, facilitating photogenerated carrier separation, optimizing electronic structure, and enabling the production of reactive radicals. Herein, we outline the state‐of‐the‐art vacancy‐engineered photocatalysts in various applications and reveal how the vacancies influence photocatalytic performance. Specifically, the types of vacancy defects, the methods for tailoring vacancies, the advanced characterization techniques, the categories of photocatalysts with vacancy defects, and the corresponding photocatalytic behaviors are presented. Meanwhile, the methods of vacancies creation and the related photocatalytic performance are correlated, which can be very useful to guide the readers to quickly obtain in‐depth knowledge and to have a good idea about the selection of defect engineering methods. The precise characterization of vacancy defects is highly challenging. This review describes the accurate use of a series of characterization techniques with detailed comments and suggestions. This represents the uniqueness of this comprehensive review. The challenges and development prospects in engineering photocatalysts with vacancy defects for practical applications are discussed to provide a promising research direction in this field.

Abstract A better understanding of the genetic control of spike and kernel traits that have higher heritability can help in the development of high‐yielding wheat varieties. Here, we identified the marker‐trait associations (MTAs) for various spike‐ and kernel‐related traits in winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) through genome‐wide association studies (GWAS). An association mapping panel comprising 297 hard winter wheat accessions from the U.S. Great Plains was evaluated for eight spike‐ and kernel‐related traits in three different environments. A GWAS using 15,590 single‐nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) identified a total of 53 MTAs for seven spike‐ and kernel‐related traits, where the highest number of MTAs were identified for spike length (16) followed by the number of spikelets per spike (15) and spikelet density (11). Out of 53 MTAs, 14 were considered to represent stable quantitative trait loci (QTL) as they were identified in multiple environments. Five multi‐trait MTAs were identified for various traits including the number of spikelets per spike (NSPS), spikelet density (SD), kernel width (KW), and kernel area (KA) that could facilitate the pyramiding of yield‐contributing traits. Further, a significant additive effect of accumulated favorable alleles on the phenotype of four spike‐related traits suggested that breeding lines and cultivars with a higher number of favorable alleles could be a valuable resource for breeders to improve yield‐related traits. This study improves the understanding of the genetic basis of yield‐related traits in hard winter wheat and provides reliable molecular markers that will facilitate marker‐assisted selection (MAS) in wheat breeding programs.

Background Cardiac adrenergic receptor gene polymorphisms have the potential to influence risk of developing ventricular fibrillation (VF) during ST‐segment‐elevation myocardial infarction, but no previous study has comprehensively investigated those most likely to alter norepinephrine release, signal transduction, or biased signaling. Methods and Results In a case–control study, we recruited 953 patients with ST‐segment‐elevation myocardial infarction without previous cardiac history, 477 with primary VF, and 476 controls without VF, and genotyped them for ADRB1 Arg389Gly and Ser49Gly, ADRB2 Gln27Glu and Gly16Arg, and ADRA2C Ins322‐325Del. Within each minor allele‐containing genotype, haplotype, or 2‐genotype combination, patients with incident VF were compared with non‐VF controls by odds ratios (OR) of variant frequencies referenced against major allele homozygotes. Tapering electromagnetic bandgap (EBG) structures is a common method in designing microstrip filters with different periodic structures. A novel technique for tapering EBG structures with the amplitude coefficients obtained from the sine function has been illustrated. This method deduces mellifluous coefficients that improves the performance with reasonable stopband width, preferable insertion loss level, and much-minimized passband ripples compared to similar designs with other tapering methods (e.g., binomial distribution, Chebyshev distribution, and conventional cosine tapering). It also offers tandem use of tapered EBG structures, leading to the novel meandered transmission line tandem design that significantly reduces the length of the filter; more than 40% is possible, compared to the uniform and conventional tapered designs. Size reduction on such a large scale will benefit the designers with the limited space issues.

Acinetobacter baumannii (A. baumannii) is an opportunistic bacterium that has developed multidrug resistance (MDR) to most of today’s antibiotics, posing a significant risk to human health. Considering the fact that developing novel drugs is a time-consuming and expensive procedure, this research focuses on utilizing computational resources for repurposing antibacterial agents for A. baumannii. We targeted shikimate kinase, an essential enzyme in A. baumannii, that plays a significant role in the metabolic process. The basis for generating new therapeutic compounds is to inhibit the shikimate kinase and thereby targeting the shikimate pathway. Herein, 1941 drug-like compounds were investigated in different in silico techniques for assessing drug-likeness properties, ADMET (absorption, distribution, metabolism, excretion, and toxicity) profiling, binding affinity, and conformation analysis utilizing Autodock-vina and SwissDock. CHEMBL1237, CHEMBL1237119, CHEMBL2018096, and CHEMBL39167178 were determined as potential drug candidates for suppressing shikimate kinase protein. Molecular Dynamics Simulation (MDS) results for root mean square deviation, root mean square fluctuation, hydrogen bond, and gyration radius confirm the drug candidates’ molecular stability with the target protein. According to this study, CHEMBL1237 (Lisinopril) could be the most suitable candidate for A. baumannii. Our investigation suggests that the inhibitors of shikimate kinase could represent promising treatment options for A. baumannii. However, further in vitro and in vivo studies are necessary to validate the therapeutic potential of the suggested drug candidates.

Mg1-xCuxFe2O4 (x = 0.0–0.5) was prepared by the double sintering ceramic method, which sintered at 1100°C and 1200°C for 3 hours and investigated for structural, microstructural, and magnetic properties as a function of the Cu content and cooling process. XRD analysis of 1100°C sintered samples revealed that all the samples were crystallized in a single-phase cubic spinal structure. The microstructural and magnetic properties of slow cooled (furnace-cooled) and fast cooled (quenched) Mg-Cu ferrites have been studied using the scanning electron microscope (SEM), vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), and Mössbauer spectroscopy after sintering at 1200°C. Homogeneous coaxial grains did not form for any furnace-cooled samples, while for the quenched sample, homogeneous grains were clearly visible even without doping with Cu. Substantial grain growth was witnessed by the samples with higher copper content for both cooling conditions, whereas quenched samples possessed a smaller grain size compared to furnace-cooled samples. The saturation magnetization experienced a higher value for quenched samples compared to furnace-cooled samples with increasing Cu content except for x = 0.4. The sextet pattern of Mössbauer spectroscopy confirmed all the samples were ferromagnetic in nature. Chemical shift, quadrupole shift, hyperfine field, and site occupancy of Fe3+ were also obtained using Mössbauer spectroscopy.

Background. Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a global health problem which is constantly evolving and varies spatially and temporally. Resistance to a particular antibiotic may serve as a selection and coselection marker for the same or different antibiotic classes. Therefore, this cross-sectional study was conducted to predict the association of phenotypic and genotypic resistance traits in uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC). Method. A total of 42 UPEC from 83 urine samples were investigated for the prevalence and association of phenotypic and genotypic AMR traits. Antibiogram profiling was carried out by Kirby–Bauer’s disc diffusion method and AMR genes (ARGs) were detected by PCR. Result. UPECs were isolated from 50.60% (42/83) of the samples examined. Of these, 80.95% of cases were derived from females, and 38.10% of cases were found in the age group of 21–30 years. The isolates were shown to have a high frequency of resistance to tetracycline (92.86%), followed by sulfonamide (71.43%), ampicillin (52.38%), trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (47.62%), and 28.57% each to streptomycin, chloramphenicol, and erythromycin. The most prevalent antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs) in these isolates were tet(A) (78.57%), tet(B) (76.19%), sul1 (61.91%), dfrA1 (35.71%), blaSHV (26.19%), cmlA (19.05%), and CITM, qnrA, and catA1 each at 11.91%. According to statistical analysis, ampicillin, sulfonamide, trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, and ciprofloxacin resistance were strongly correlated with the presence of blaSHV, sul1, dfrA1, and qnrA, respectively. Nonsignificant associations were observed between ciprofloxacin-tetracycline, sulfonamide-erythromycin pairs as well as between tet(A) and tet(B) genes. Besides, coselection was also assumed in the case of chloramphenicol resistance genes, namely, catA1 and cmlA. Conclusion. Both the phenotypic and genetic resistance traits were found in the UPEC isolates. Statistical association and coselection phenomena among AMR phenotypes and genotypes were also observed but required to be validated in a broad-scale study. However, these findings might have important implications for the development of an AMR prediction model to tackle future AMR outbreaks.

Background. The epidemiology of human papilloma virus (HPV) infection and the pattern of HPV genotype distribution are much-needed parameters to assess the risk of cervical cancer among females. However, due to less availability of data on HPV burden and its genotypes from various geographical regions in India makes cervical cancer screening modalities and vaccination strategies difficult to implement. Objective. The present study was conducted to identify the various genotypes particularly high-risk HPV types in premalignant or malignant cervical lesions. Methods. The study was a hospital-based cross-sectional study wherein 295 symptomatic women were screened by Pap smear and multiplex real-time PCR was performed for HPV genotypes identification in women with abnormal cervical cytology. Results. Out of 295 women, 237 (80.3%), 45 (15.3%), and 13 (4.4%) women had normal Pap smear, squamous cell carcinoma and precancerous cytology, respectively. Among these 58 women having abnormal cervical cytology, HPV was detected in 48 (81.0%) participants. Most common HPV genotypes in our study were HPV 16 (n=29; 60.4%) followed by mixed infections; i.e., more than one type of HPV was detected (n=10, 20.8%). HPV 18 was detected only in 6.25%, whereas other high-risk HPV genotypes were found to be 12.5%. Conclusion. HPV positivity was >80% in women having abnormal Pap smear. The prevalence of HPV 18 was found to be much less in Central India, compared to other parts of country. HPV 16 was the most common genotype followed by mixed HPV genotype infections. It is evident from our study that symptomatic women even if having normal Pap smear should be screened for HPV and followed up with periodic Pap smears for detecting any change in cervical cytology, thus preventing cervical cancer in women.
