To define the prevalence of hypothyroidism in women with chronic lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) and to compare the severity of each symptom between patients with hypothyroidism and controls.In this prospective observational study, we screened all adult women who came to the urology clinic between March 2017 and September 2020, and enrolled patients with chronic LUTS in the study. We assessed thyroid function. We evaluated the severity of voiding and storage urinary symptoms by the International Prostate Symptom Score. We also assessed the severity of urge urinary incontinence (UUI) and stress urinary incontinence (SUI). For between-group analysis, we selected age-matched cases and controls and compared them regarding the distribution and severity of urinary symptoms.Seven hundred and twenty-five women with a mean age of 51.7 ± 14.0 years were included in the final analysis. Two hundred fifty-eight patients (35.6%) had hypothyroidism. Age-matched case and control groups consisting of 210 patients each were selected. There was no significant difference in the severity and distribution of voiding LUTS and UUI between the study groups (P values0.05). The severity of storage symptoms was lower in patients with hypothyroidism (P = 0.04). Sixty-seven patients with hypothyroidism (31.9%) had SUI, which was significantly higher than controls (23.3%) (P = 0.03).More than one-third of women with chronic LUTS have hypothyroidism which is much more frequent than in the general population. We also suggest a possible relationship between hypothyroidism and the severity of SUI and an inverse relationship between hypothyroidism and storage symptoms.

Cardiac failure, such as myocardial infarction (MI), is one of the most serious causes of mortality worldwide. MI is the sign of cardiac cell damage as a result of decreased blood oxygen level, which causes some morphological changes in the form of 12‐lead electrocardiogram (ECG) waves including T‐wave, Q‐wave, and ST‐segment. The main goal of this study is to represent vectorcardiography (VCG) as a complementary diagnostic tool of the ECG method to discriminate the various type of MI from normal cases. The system proposed in this study was analysed on the Physikalisch‐Technische Bundesanstalt diagnostic ECG database and a recorded signal database for 80 MI and 52 healthy cases. Each record consists of 15 ECG and VCG signals. In this study, tridimensional morphological features were applied to the classification and regression tree (CART) and the feedforward neural network classifier. To classify MI cases from healthy control cases of our recorded database, classification and regression tree achieved the same results when VCG features or ECG features were applied with an accuracy of 99.4%, a sensitivity of 100%, and a specificity of 98.7%. Further, by using VCG Octant features with this current method, anterior‐MI and inferior‐MI were separated with an accuracy of 98.9%, a sensitivity of 98%, and a specificity of 100%. The outcomes prove that the VCG features performed more accurately than ECG features in MI localisation.

The aim of this study was to prepare a porous scaffold out of 58S bioactive glass as the bare and coated with Zein to improve mechanical properties and acting as a carrier for Kaempferol controlled delivery. Porosity and morphology, mechanical properties, drug release behavior, bioactivity, cell attachment, and biodegradation of the scaffolds were evaluated accordingly. Obtained results indicated that the scaffolds coated by (7wt/v %) Zein solution, showed the highest mechanical strength (3.06 ± 0.4 MPa) and desirable porous morphology. These scaffolds could support bioactivity, cell attachment, and provide sustained drug release in the safe range of Kaempferol concentration confirmed via 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide analysis. Overall, this study showed that the Zein-coated scaffold possesses superior properties rather than bare scaffold, and the scaffolds coated with 7wt/v % Zein solution could be considered as appropriate scaffolds for bone regeneration.

Aim Interventions based on adopting a healthy lifestyle have been less successful. The aim of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of healthy lifestyle interventions on weight gain in overweight pregnant women. Design A cluster randomized controlled trial. Methods Health centres were selected by simple random sampling; then, 66 overweight pregnant women were enrolled by convenience sampling and divided into intervention and comparison groups. Intervention group received individual nutritional counselling and physical activity training. Aim The current work investigated the issues that cause apprehension in infertile women, the effects of this disquiet on their quality of life and the strategies that they adopt in dealing with their concerns. Design The qualitative research. Method This qualitative research sampled participants from a training centre in Mazandaran University of Medical Sciences and a privately owned infertility centre in Mazandaran Province, north of Iran. Purposive sampling continued until data saturation was reached. We conducted a conventional content analysis of the responses of 30 individuals (15 women with female infertility and 15 key informants) to in‐depth and semi‐structured in‐person interviews on May to November 2019 . Results The results uncovered two themes subsuming four categories of issues: The first theme revolves around “infertility concerns,” under which “concerns” and “the difficulty and vagueness of treatment” belonged. The second theme was “dealing with infertility,” which covered “adaptive strategies” and “inhibitors of reconciliation with perceived infertility.”

The metacommunity, as it evolved from Levins's metapopulation, provides a framework to consider the spatial organization of species interactions. A defining feature of metapopulations and metacommunities is that organisms (populations or communities) are connected via migration. An important result from Levins's metapopulation work – that increasing migration lowers regional extinction probability – is often incorporated into conceptions of metacommunities; however, this may not hold true for multiple interacting metapopulations (i.e. metacommunities). We report results from a metacommunity field experiment conducted with a tropical terrestrial leaf litter macro‐arthropod community. We show that migration induces regional extinctions of predators without significantly changing the predator community composition. For non‐predators we found no evidence of regional extinctions, but a significant change in community composition. Our result corroborates the findings of a prior similar metacommunity experiment with a temperate forest leaf litter community. The concordance between these experiments, even with vastly different communities, highlights the importance of considering trophic and non‐trophic community structure to understand metacommunity dynamics, and suggests a potential connection between migration rates and trophic‐specific responses in ecological communities.

Background The potential toxicity that results from environmental xenobiotics is not completely known. Increasing levels of heavy metals and the use of organophosphate pesticides (OPs) and their co-existence in the environment could be associated with an increasing incidence of male reproductive system disorders in humans and animals. Ferulago angulata is a dietary source of phenolic compounds with reported health benefits. Objective This study was conducted to investigate whether an extract of Ferulago angulata could protect adult male NMRI mice against reproductive toxicity induced by lead acetate (PbAc), diazinon (DZN), or PbAc + DZN. Materials and methods Adult male NMRI mice were exposed to either 0.5% PbAc in drinking water, DZN (3 mg/kg/day, intraperitoneal [i.p.] injection), or PbAc + DZN in the presence or absence of 400 mg/kg/day Ferulago angulata hydroalcoholic extract (FAE) that was administered via gavage for 6 weeks. Results Chronic exposure to PbAc, DZN, and PbAc + DZN decreased sperm quality, sperm chromatin maturity and integrity, increased oxidative stress and lipid peroxidation, and could reduce male fertility indices. Co-administration of FAE could reduce these negative effects. Conclusion The Ferulago angulata extract should be considered as a useful natural extract for the treatment of male infertility, especially in males exposed to conditions which induce reproductive toxicity.

Background Reproductive toxicity of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) on spermatozoa is well established. Objective The aim of the present study was to show the potential benefits of alpha lipoic acid (ALA) as a strong antioxidant in alleviating the reproductive toxicity of LPS. Materials and methods Sperm cells and cumulus-oocyte complexes (COCs) were collected from healthy NMRI mice (body weights ranged from 25 to 35 g, 100 females and 200 males). Sperm cells were treated with varying doses of ALA (0.01, 0.02, and 0.04 mm) and 0.01 μg/mL of LPS for 4 h. The quality of spermatozoa (ROS production, DNA fragmentation, and spontaneous acrosome reaction), sperm fertilizability, and the consequent developmental competence of oocytes inseminated with ALA/LPS-treated spermatozoa were recorded. Results The results showed that 0.04 mm of ALA abrogated LPS-reduced sperm motility, viability, ROS production, spontaneous acrosome reaction, fertilizability, and developmental competence. In addition, 0.04 mm ALA significantly reverted the negative effects of LPS on inner cell mass (ICM) cell counts, total cell number (TCM), and ratio between ICM and TCM. Discussion Our data showed that ALA significantly could abrogate the negative effects of LPS on sperm quality and oocyte developmental competence. Therefore, ALA had the capacity for protecting sperm cells from LPS-induced damage and ensured fertilization and developmental competency. Conclusion These in vitro findings suggested a therapeutic role for ALA in reducing the negative effects of LPS on spermatozoa and early embryonic development.

Tissue and stem cell encapsulation andtransplantation were considered as promising tools in the treatment of patients with diabetes mellitus. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of microfluidic encapsulation on the differentiation of trabecular meshwork mesenchymal stem cells (TM-MSC), into insulin-producing cells (IPCs) both in vitro and in vivo. The presence of differentiated cells in microfibers (three dimensional [3D]) and tissue culture plates (TCPS; two dimensional [2D]) culture was evaluated by detecting mRNA and protein expression of pancreatic islet-specific markers as well as measuring insulin release of cells in response to glucose challenges. Finally, semi-differentiated cells in microfibers (3D) and 2D cultures were used to control the glucose level in diabetic rats. The results of this study showed that MSCs differentiated in alginate microfibers (fabricated by microfluidic device) express more Pdx-1 mRNA (1.938-fold, p-value: 0.0425) and Insulin mRNA (2.841-fold, p-value: 0.0001) compared with those cultured on TCPS. Furthermore, cell encapsulation in microfluidic derived microfibers decreased the level of blood glucose in diabetic rats. The approach used in this study showed the possibility of alginate microfibers as a matrix for differentiation of TM-MSCs (as a new source) into IPCs. In addition, it could minimize different steps in stem cell differentiation, handling, and encapsulation, which lead to loss of an unlimited number of cells.

Research that pertains to the molecular mechanisms involved in retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) development can significantly contribute to cell therapy studies. The effects of periocular mesenchymal cells on the expansion of RPE cells remain elusive. We have examined the possible proliferative role of hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) as a mesenchymal cell secretory factor against human embryonic stem cell derived RPE (hESC-RPE). We found that the conditioned medium of human mesenchymal stem cells from apical papilla and/or exogenous HGF promoted proliferation of the hESC-RPE cells as single cells and cell sheets, in addition to rabbit RPE sheets in vitro. Blockage of HGF signaling by HGF receptor inhibitor, PHA-665752, inhibited proliferation of hESC-RPE cells. However, differentiation of hESCs and human-induced pluripotent stem cells to a rostral fate and eye-field specification was unaffected by HGF. Our in vivo analysis showed HGF expression in periocular mesenchymal cells after optic cup formation in chicken embryos. Administration of HGF receptor inhibitor at this developmental stage in chicken embryos led to reduced eye size and disorganization of the RPE sheet. These findings suggested that HGF administration could be beneficial for obtaining higher numbers of hESC-RPE cells in human preclinical and clinical trials.

Objective To determine the diagnostic value of vaginal discharge concentrations of β human chorionic gonadotropin (β-hCG), creatinine, and urea to identify premature rupture of membranes (PROM). Methods An observational cross-sectional study was conducted between 12 June, 2014, and 11 June, 2015, among 120 women who were admitted to an Iranian hospital at 28–41 weeks of pregnancy. Women with positive pooling and nitrazine test results were assigned to the PROM group (n=60), whereas those with negative test results were assigned to the control group (n=60). Samples of vaginal discharge were obtained. Results Mean concentrations of β-hCG, urea, and creatinine were all higher in the PROM group than in the control group (all P=0.001). The diagnostic accuracies as defined by area under the curve for creatinine, urea, and β-hCG were 0.891, 0.895, and 0.908, respectively. The corresponding optimal cutoff values were 20.33 μmol/L, 0.94 mmol/L, and 39.5 IU/L, respectively. Conclusion The vaginal discharge concentrations of all three markers exhibited favorable predictive value for the diagnosis of PROM; however, β-hCG showed greater diagnostic accuracy than either urea or creatinine.
