Catheter ablation has evolved into the dominant therapeutic modality in the treatment of a variety of arrhythmias, particularly supraventricular arrhythmias with the mechanisms of atrioventricular (AV) nodal reentry and AV reciprocating tachycardia via an accessory pathway. The mode of catheter ablation used in the great majority of cases is radiofrequency (RF) catheter ablation. This technology is well-suited for the above arrhythmias because the targets and the RF lesions are both small and discrete. Using temperature monitoring may improve the outcome of these procedures by decreasing procedure time and incidence of coagulum formation on the catheter after a sudden rise in electrical impedance. New RF catheter designs and new modalities of creating catheter-induced focal myocardial injury will allow operators to have improved success with the ablation of less approachable arrhythmias, including atrial flutter and reentrant ventricular tachycardia. Studies are currently underway to create a catheter based "maze" procedure for the treatment of atrial fibrillation. As techniques and technologies evolve, a greater proportion of patients with symptomatic or threatening arrhythmias may be approached with catheter ablation as a curative or palliative procedure.

A Pentastomid nymph of the genus Porocephalus was identified following its removal from the brain-meningeal interface of a squirrel monkey, Saimiri sciureus. It was characterized by two inner and two outer hooks adjacent to the mouth opening, the presence of accessory lobes (or spines) on the outer hooks, a vertical slit-like mouth opening surrounded by a U-shaped conformation of integument, and annulation of the body surface. Stigmata, representing the openings of integumental chloride cells, were present on the dorsum of the head and tail, on anterior aspects of annulae on the body, and on anterior and posterior edges of annulae located on the ventral surface of the tail. These openings were not present on integumental folds at the bases of the inner and outer hooks, on the dorsal aspect of the tail flap, or in the deep grooves separating annulae. Although it was not possible to determine the species, based on the number of annulae this specimen may represent P. stilesi.

Projections from the trigeminal complex to paramedian lobule (PML) were studied in the tree shrew (Tupaia glis) by means of retrograde transport of horseradish peroxidase (HRP). Neurons which project to both dorsal and ventral folia of PML are located primarily in those areas of the trigeminal nuclear complex interpreted as nucleus interpolaris (Vi) and caudal areas of the nucleus oralis (Vo). The majority of HRP-labeled neurons lie in ventral and ventrolateral regions of Vi/Vo. No HRP-reactive cells are present in the principal (Vp), mesencephalic, or motor nuclei nor in nucleus caudalis or rostral portions of oralis. The majority of trigeminocerebellar (TC) cells are found in ipsilateral Vi; however, sparse numbers of labeled somata are present in this subnucleus on the contralateral side. Within Vi/Vo, small fusiform and medium-and large-sized multipolar neurons contain HRP-reaction product. Large multipolar cells are found primarily in ventrolateral portions of Vi/Vo, while medium and small neurons are scattered throughout the ventral half of the nucleus. Small-sized neurons are also present dorsally within Vi/Vo. Axons of labeled TC cells course laterally through the spinal trigeminal tract, enter medial aspects of the restiform body, and arch dorsally into the cerebellum.

The gross relationships and light microscopic anatomy of the suprarenal gland of a prosimian primate, Galago senegalensis, is described. The left gland is located medial to the pole of the left kidney in a fascial compartment of its own. The right suprarenal is located medial to the pole of the right kidney in intimate apposition to the liver and inferior vena cava. The capsule of the right gland blends with the capsule of the right lobe of the liver and is also contiguous with the adventitia of the inferior vena cava. The histologic appearance of the gland is similar to that of other primate genera. The zona glomerulosa is poorly developed; the zona fasciculata is composed of cell cords and is relatively well developed and the zona reticularis shows no unusual characteristics. The organization of the lipid content of the various cortical zones show a considerable different pattern than previously reported. The zona glomerulosa contains numerous large lipid droplets. In contrast to the bi-laminar pattern of lipid deposition seen in other primates, the Galgo shows three distinct layers of lipid droplets in the zona fasciculata. The zona reticularis has a moderate population of lipid droplets essentially similar to that reported in most other forms. The medulla, except for a sparse number of centrally displaced zona reticularis cells, is completely devoid of lipid deposits. The junction of the zona reticularis and medulla is distinct, although a connective tissue capsule is not present.
