The application of phosphogypsum (PG) on sodic soils provides nutrients to the soil, reduces the toxic effect of Na+, and improves soil properties. Laboratory experiments were performed to evaluate the effects of PG on the chemical properties of sodic soils. The treatments were arranged in a completely randomized design with five replications. The treatments included 0% GR (control), 50% GR (28.18 g·kg−1), 100% GR (56.37 g·kg−1), 150% GR (84.50 g·kg−1), and 200% GR (112.74 g·kg−1) rates that were thoroughly mixed with soil under incubation, whereas PG was mixed with topsoil before leaching at the same application rates under the leaching experiment. In this study, the S-function is applied to Saigo’s k-fractional order integral and derivative operators involving the k-hypergeometric function in the kernel; outcomes are described in terms of the k-Wright function, which is used to represent image formulas of integral transformations such as the beta transform. Several special cases, such as the fractional calculus operator and the S-function, are also listed.

In this paper, we establish extensive form of the fractional kinetic equation involving generalized Galué type Struve function using the technique of Laplace transforms. The results are expressed in terms of Mittag-Leffler function. Further, numerical values of the results and their graphical interpretation are interpreted to study the behaviour of these solutions. The results obtained here are quite general in nature and capable of yielding a very large number of known and (presumably) new results.

Background: Artificial nail modelling systems (ANMS) pose a significant risk for nail stylists and their clients regarding acrylate sensitization, which might jeopardize the use of acrylate-containing medical devices., Objectives: To evaluate the frequency of artificial nail practices among female healthcare workers (HCWs) compared with controls and assess ANMS-related side effects., Methods: In this comparative, cross-sectional, single-centre study, a face-to-face interview with 200 female HCWs and 200 age-matched female dermatology patients (controls) was conducted regarding the use of ANMS between March and November 2023., Results: Among 400 participants (median age: 25), 85 (21.3%) have applied ANMS at least once. The prevalence of ANMS application was significantly higher in HCWs (n = 54/200, 27%) compared with controls (n = 31/200, 15.5%) (p < 0.05). Long-lasting nail polish was the most commonly preferred technique (n = 82/85, 96.5%). ANMS were mainly performed in nail studios by nail stylists (n = 79/85, 92.9%), while three participants were using home kits. Nail brittleness was the most frequently reported side effect (n = 19/85, 22.4%). No case of allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) was detected., Conclusions: The popularity of ANMS among young female HCWs is growing. Recently, insects have aroused the interest of researchers as potential therapeutic resources against malignant diseases such as cancer. In this study, the effects of aqueous extracts from mysore thorn borer (MTB) (Anoplophora chinensis) and mealworm larvae (MWL) (Tenebrio molitor) against cancer cells were investigated. MWL aqueous extract showed higher antiproliferative effects against Caco-2 and HepG2 cells compared to MTB. The IC 50 (48 hr) of MWL aqueous extract were 11.44 and 20 mg/ml for Caco-2 and HepG2 respectively. Flow cytometry analysis showed that MWL aqueous extract induced apoptosis in Caco-2 and HepG2 increasing from 2.06% to 74.34% and from 0.04% to 42.14% after 24 hr respectively. Caspase activity assay showed that apoptosis was mediated via death receptor pathway mediated by caspase-8 and -9 followed by the activation of caspase-3; caspase-3 may have induced DNA damage and cell death. These effects may be correlated to its free amino acids. The results of this study demonstrate the potentials of MWL in the development of natural anticancer therapeutics in the future. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS: Natural nutraceuticals from insects might be useful for the treatment and prevention of cancers such as colorectal and liver cancer. Raman spectroscopy was used to monitor the enzymatic hydrolysis process of grape seed protein. The degree of hydrolysis (DH), IC 50 of the ACE inhibitory activity, and peptide content of the digestive products of grape seed protein were analyzed offline. The partial least squares (PLS), interval partial least squares (IPLS), and joint interval partial least squares (Si-PLS) models of DH, IC 50 , and peptide content were established and the optimal pretreatment method was selected. In the optimal model, the corrected model r of the grape seed protein hydrolysis degree is 0.997, the Root Mean Square Error of Cross Validation (RMSECV) is 0.507%. The predicted model r value is 0.9932, the Root Mean Square Error of Prediction (RMSEP) is 1.15%. The corrected model r value of the IC 50 is 0.9965, the RMSECV is 11.9%. The r value and RMSEP of predicted model are 0.9978 and 9.64%. The corrected model r value of the peptide content is 0.9955, the RMSECV is 12.7%, the predicted model r value is 0.9953, and the RMSEP is 15.4%. These results showed that in situ real-time monitoring of grape seed protein hydrolysis process can be achieved by Raman spectroscopy. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS: This study uses Raman spectroscopy method to establish the quantification of proteolysis, IC50, and peptide content of the simulated digestive products during grape seed proteolysis. Analyze the model to monitor and evaluate the target parameters during the entire grape seed proteolysis process. Increasing soil organic matter (SOM) is one purpose of applying manures to soils, but soil-applied manures decompose and disappear in a short time, leaving very little trace as SOM. The objective of this study was to test and identify agricultural and industrial products and by-products (PBPs) that reduce the speed of manure decomposition and, potentially, increase SOM. Raw poultry litter (PL) was amended with selected PBPs (15% fresh weight) and incubated for 1-3 mo. Unamended PL lost an average of 19% of its dry weight after 1 mo incubation and 24% of its dry weight after 3 mo. Monitoring the CO 2 release during a 1-mo incubation revealed that decomposition and weight loss of unamended PL is greatest in the first 2 d. Amending PL with Al 2 (SO 4 ) 3 · 18H 2 O and CaO reduced cumulative CO 2 release and final dry biomass loss during the incubation period of 1-3 mo. Amending PL with Al 2 (SO 4 ) 3 · 18H 2 O reduced PL temperature by up to 14 °C and pH by ∼4.0, whereas CaO elevated its temperature by up to 24 °C and pH by ∼4.0. Both products suppressed total culturable bacteria and reduced dehydrogenase activity soon after mixing. Amending PL with flue gas desulfurization gypsum, CaCO 3 , cement kiln dust, or biochar either enhanced or had no effect on suppressing litter decomposition. Our results overall show that the decomposition of PL and possibly other manures may be slowed and that the soil-residence life of manure C may be increased using PBPs that raise or lower manure pH and temperature., (© 2020 The Authors. This study evaluated the effects of ultrasound treatment on walnut meal protein (WMP) extraction and techno-functional properties. The Box-Behnken Design (BBD) was adopted for the optimization of the traditional and ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) processes. Standard protocols were used to assay the techno-functional characteristics. The extraction models' statistical results exhibited adequacy with the least desirability index of 95.8%. The UAE enhanced the WMP extraction yield, purity, and chemical score by 30.15%, 16.27%, and 9.74%, respectively, while reducing the extraction time by 25% over the control. The emulsion and foam stabilities and bulk density increased by 34.5%, 39.8%, and 6.1%, respectively, over the control. The α-helix decreased while β-sheet, β-turns and random coil secondary structure components increased significantly (p < .05) by 95.76%, 101.3%, 105.1%, and 85.7% correspondingly. The dual-frequency combination (20/40 kHz/kHz) was the best frequency mode. WMP could serve as a functional additive in manufactured foods as texture and flavor enhancer. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS: Walnut meal protein (WMP) has a well-balanced amino acid profile and its economic use could be practically increased as a food ingredient by ultrasound-assisted extraction. By this technique, WMP could be employed for the development of enhanced food ingredients rather than being discarded as animal feed. This study showed a positive effect of ultrasonic-assisted alkaline pretreatment on WMP extraction, functionality and structure characteristics. In addition to process improvement, ultrasound is energy efficient and environmentally friendly. Fresh and half-dried fruits of lychee (Litchi Chinensis) and longan (Dimocarpus longan) were processed by air drying and implemented in diverse forms as fillings in order to produce chocolate pralines. Both dried fruits and chocolate pralines were characterized with total polyphenols, proanthocyanidins, flavan-3-ols and antioxidant capacity (2, 2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl, 2, 2-Azino-Bis-3-Ethylbenzothiazoline-6-Sulfonic acid) were determined by spectrophotometric and sensory analyses by quantitative descriptive analysis. Specific polyphenolic compounds were quantified using high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with photodiode array detector. The bioactive content and profile of chocolate pralines produced with the addition of longan and lychee were not significantly altered when compared to plain chocolate, but the sensory analysis revealed a preference for lychee-containing pralines, due to characteristic fruity sensory properties. Since longan and lychee fruits are still underutilized as raw materials and ingredients in food production, preservation by drying and incorporation into new products may enable their popularization and increase functional food production. We investigated the impact of sonochemical action and the reaction of Hermetia illucens larvae meal protein (HILMP) as regards enzymolysis under varied enzyme concentration and temperature to explain the mechanism and effect of sonication on molecular conformation, limits of kinetics, free-Gibbs energy, and antioxidative capacity. Control treatment was used for comparison. The results showed sonochemical treatment enhanced HILMP-enzymolysis efficiency at various enzyme volume, and temperature. Enzymolysis-kinetics revealed sonochemical treatment increased the rate constant (p < .05) by 17.21%, 25.06%, 26.91%, and 41.38% at 323, 313, 303, and 293 K, respectively. On free-Gibbs, sonochemical treatment reduced the reactants-reactivity energy, enthalpy, and entropy by 30.53%, 35.05%, and 10.71%, respectively (p < .05). Changes in spectra of UV and fluorescence, and micrographic imaging indicated alterations of HILMP by sonochemical treatment. Antioxidative activity of sonochemically-treated HILMP increased, compared to control. Thus, sonochemical treatment may be beneficial in the production of edible insect proteins with smaller molecular weights for different food and/or pharmaceutical applications. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS: Sonochemical pretreatment of HILMP positively impacted it enzymolysis rate-reaction, stability of reaction products, structure, and bioactivity. Thus, the technique may be beneficial to industry in the processing/development of new (bioactive/pharmaceutical) products involving enzymolysis of edible insects (e.g., Hermetia illucens) protein; particularly at such a time where edible insects are projected to be a source of protein for human nutrition and livestock in the next few years., (© 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.)

To improve the utility of walnut meal protein, influences of ultrasonication on the kinetic and thermodynamic constraints of enzyme (trypsin) hydrolysis were assessed using a multi-frequency counter current S-type ultrasound machine. Results revealed that both the ultrasonication treatment and control hydrolysis obeyed the first-order kinetics within the study constraints. After 90 min hydrolysis time, the uppermost percentage conversion rate (57.5%) of substrate to product and the percentage increase (25.42%) in hydrolyzed protein concentration were obtained at 323 K and 10% substrate concentration, respectively. The Michaelis constant (K M ) in ultrasonic enzymolysis declined by 58.66% over the control. The reaction rate coefficient (k) for the proteolysis improved by 84.75%, 52.43%, 48.25%, and 37.79% at 219, 303, 313, and 323 K, correspondingly. Generally, the bond energy (E a ), enthalpy change (ΔH), entropy change (ΔS), and Gibbs free energy (ΔG) were reduced by the ultrasound pretreatment with 36.61%, 28.05%, 18.22%, and 5.24%, respectively. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS: Walnut meal protein has a well-balanced amino acid profile and its economic utilization could be increased practicably as a food ingredient via production of hydrolysates/peptides for the production of improved food ingredients instead of being cast off as animal feed. The effect of ultrasound (US), osmotic dehydration (OD), and osmosonication (OS) pretreatments on total phenolic content (TPC), total flavonoids content, (TFC), phytochemical constituents (gingerol derivatives and diarylheptanoids), polyphenol oxidase (PPO), peroxidase (POD), 2,2-azino-bis-(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid (ABTS), cupric ion reducing capacity (CUPRAC), 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), ferric reducing antioxidant power capacity (FRAP), and color of ginger slices dried under relative humidity convective dryer was investigated. OS pretreatment improved the preservation of TPC (13.80-34.79 mg GAE/g d.w), TFC (26.46-62.16 mg CE/g d.w), ABTS (30.37%-86.10%), CUPRAC (36.89-73.97 mg/g), DPPH (50.57%-92.60%), FRAP (26.44-83 mg/g), and phytochemical constituents than US and OD. The OS-treated sample was more effective in inactivating both PPO (12.09%-35.93%) and POD (16.21%-39.58%) enzymes compared to US and OD-treated samples. However, US pretreatment retained the color quality of dried ginger slices than the OS and OD treatments. OS pretreatment (5.43) also increased the total color change (ΔE) of the dried ginger samples compared to US (2.81) and OD (4.60). PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS: Ginger is commonly used in the food, beverage, and pharmaceutical industries owing to their distinctive flavor and various health potentials. However, its high moisture content makes its inappropriate for long-term storage which results in its high perishability. Drying is one of the most common techniques to prolong its shelf life. Hence, any pretreatment for ginger that reduces the moistures content and lessens the drying time by preserving the quality of the crop is of vital importance. Ultrasound, osmotic dehydration, and osmosonication are novel pretreatment techniques that are widely used prior to drying of various agricultural products due to its numerous advantages over conventional methods. Its application in drying of foods could help shorten the drying time, reduce processing costs, improve energy consumption and efficiency, and preserve the physical and nutritional properties of the dried product. The study aims to determine drying of sweet potatoes using multifrequency ultrasound (US) pretreatments (20, 40, and 60 kHz) at three different infrared (IR) drying temperatures (60, 70, and 80°C) and evaluate the phytochemical and textural quality of the dried product. Drying time was significantly decreased in moderate US frequency (40 kHz) at 70°C with the increasing drying temperature. Comparing to the fresh samples, the dried samples showed the highest amount of phytochemical contents. The antioxidant activity of the samples increased especially at 60 kHz and 80°C, while US-IR treatments shown a positive impact on total carotenoids contents and β-carotene. For phenolic compounds, Ellagic acid and Rutin were quantified in higher amount while Quercetin-3-rhamnoside and Quercetin 3-β-D-glucoside were two new compounds identified for the first time in sweet potatoes. FTIR spectra showed the successful synthesis of OH group and phenolics in samples treated with the US at 20 kHz. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS: This study investigated the effects of multifrequency ultrasound with different infrared drying temperatures. The study provides evidence that infrared drying application in synergy with ultrasonic pretreatments can improve drying efficiency and food quality much better than using each method alone. Total phenolic contents and total flavonoid contents remained stable at US 40 kHz and 60°C conditions. The findings showed that moderate ultrasound frequency (40 kHz) at 60°C improved phytochemical properties while antioxidant activities showed better preservation response at 80°C with 60 kHz. Agronomic management is aimed at managing the crop environment to maximize crop yield, but soil biology is often ignored. This study aimed to compare the application of poultry litter via broadcast and subsurface banding versus standard inorganic fertilizer to cotton ( L.) and their effects on soil bacterial populations and fecal indicator bacteria. The study comprised a randomized complete block design, with fertilizer and time of application as treatment effects and cover crop as a main effect. Soil cores were collected and analyzed from 2008 to 2014. Fecal indicator bacteria were at detection limits for all treatments, where the integron 1 gene was significantly elevated in litter plots. There were few differences between litter application approaches, but both significantly increased key biogeochemical genes over control plots, whereas a cover crop only increased soil moisture and urease C. Data suggested a positive residual effect of litter application with 16S, phosphatase A, and urease C genes elevated over controls, but similar to standard fertilizer plots. High-throughput 16S ribosomal RNA analysis suggested increased diversity and enrichment indices in litter and standard fertilizer over untreated control plots. Litter and standard fertilizer effects persisted 4 and 2 yr after application, respectively, as evidenced by residual library community structures. This study demonstrated the positive effects of litter application on the soil bacterial community when compared with untreated control plots. In Mississippi, spent poultry litter is used as fertilizer. Nutrient and bacterial levels in litter and nutrient levels in litter-fertilized (L+) soil are known, but less is known of bacterial levels in L+ soil. This study compared contiguous L+ and non-litter-fertilized (L-) soils comprising 15 soil types on five farms in April through May 2009. Levels of pH; NO-N; and Mehlich-3-extractable (M3) and water-extractable (WE) P, Ca, K, and Cu were higher in L+ than in L- soil. Total C; total N; NH-N; and M3 and WE Na, Fe, and Zn did not differ in L+ and L- soil. Bacterial levels were higher in 0- to 5-cm than in 5- to 10-cm cores. Levels were higher in L+ than in L- soil for culturally determined heterotrophic plate counts and staphylococci and were lower for total bacteria estimated by quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) of 16S rRNA, but cultural levels of thermotolerant coliforms, , , and enterococci were not different. Cultural presence/absence (CPA) tests and qPCR for spp., spp., and spp. detected only spp., which did not differ in L+ (CPA = 77% positive samples; mean qPCR = 0.65 log genomic units [gu] g) and L- (CPA = 70% positive samples; mean qPCR = 0 log gu g) soils. Litter applications were associated with higher levels of pH, P, Cu, heterotrophic plate counts, and staphylococci. Fecal indicator and enteric pathogen levels were not affected. Background: Research has increasingly identified the perception of school environment as an influential factor in children's lives. There has been sparse research attention, however, on the potential importance of parents' perceptions of school environment on child adjustment. This study examined the relationship between parents' perceptions of school environment and children's emotional and behavioral problems., Methods: Data were derived from the New Canadian Children and Youth Study, a study of the children (aged 4-6 and 11-13) of immigrant parents. Analyses focused on a subsample of Mainland Chinese, Hong Kong Chinese, and Filipino immigrants in a large metropolitan area., Results: Parental perception of school environment was negatively associated with physical aggression in children even after controlling for child age and gender, parental characteristics, family functioning, and aspects of acculturation. In contrast, parental perception was not significantly related to symptoms of emotional distress in children. There were some ethnic differences in perception of school environment., Conclusions: Parental perception of school environment is important to the well-being of the children of immigrant parents, and reinforces the relevance of initiatives to improve the dynamics between parents and schools., (© 2011, American School Health Association.)
