1. Differential use of nest materials and niche space among avian species within a single ecological community

Abstract

Abstract Differential use of resources among bird species has been examined extensively in diet and nesting sites, but few studies have assessed this regarding avian nest materials. We assessed the structure and composition of nests in a group of co‐existing passerine shrubland birds at a site in Massachusetts, USA. We found, measured, collected, and dissected nests, and then weighed nest materials in morphological groups (e.g., bark, twigs, feathers) to determine if our seven focal species were using different nest materials. Among species, we compared proportional material masses in complete nests, and also separately in the exterior, structural part of the nest and the interior, cup lining. We found that the proportional masses of all 17 material types that we examined in nests differed among species. The compositions of nests among all seven bird species were distinct in multivariate ordination space and only a few pairs of species had substantial niche overlap. Proportional masses of materials within discrete sections (exterior and interior) also varied among species. Although some differences in nest composition could be partially explained by bird species size, nest materials differed even within the three larger bodied species and within four smaller bodied species. Our study builds upon previous studies that have shown species‐specificity in avian nest composition and supports the notion that birds using the same environment have distinct niches in relation to the materials placed in their nests. Niche partitioning due to interspecific competition could partially explain our findings, as certain materials are limited as resources, and searching for suitable nest materials is energetically costly. Additionally, other factors, such as partitioned nest sites, may have led to differential nest material use. We recommend further research to help elucidate underlying mechanisms of nest composition partitioning in birds and potentially other nest‐building taxa.

Abstract

Abstract There is ample evidence for ice layers and lenses within glacial firn. The standard model for ice layer formation localizes the refreezing by perching of meltwater on pre‐existing discontinuities. Here we argue that even extreme melting events provide insufficient flux for this mechanism. Using a thermomechanical model we demonstrate a different mechanism of ice layer formation. After a melting event when the drying front catches up with the wetting front and arrests melt percolation, conductive heat loss freezes the remaining melt in place to form an ice layer. This model reproduces the depth of a new ice layer at the Dye‐2 site in Greenland. It provides a deeper insight into the interpretation of firn stratigraphy and past climate variability. It also improves the simulation of firn densification processes, a key source of uncertainty in assessing and attributing ice sheet mass balance based on satellite altimetry and gravimetry data.

3. Revising the Basal Permittivity of the South Polar Layered Deposits of Mars With a Surficial Dust Cover

Abstract

Abstract Bright basal reflections from the Mars Advanced Radar for Subsurface and Ionosphere Sounding (MARSIS) have been proposed to be consistent with permittivities characteristic of a wet material beneath the south polar layered deposits (SPLD). The characterization of a recently formed impact crater highlight the existence of a several meters thick ice‐poor layer associated to a unit blanketing a large portion of the SPLD. We revise the radar propagation model used to invert the basal permittivity by including a surficial thin layer. We find that the inverted basal permittivity is highly sensitive to the properties of such a layer, with solutions ranging from common dry rocks to an unambiguously wet base. We advocate toward a better characterization of the surficial cover to assess the wet or dry nature for the base, and possibly reconcile most of the literature on the topic.

Abstract

Abstract Background and Aims Assuring laboratory quality by minimizing the magnitude of errors is essential. Therefore, this study aimed to assess hematology laboratory performance in the total testing process using quality indicators and sigma metrics. Methods A cross‐sectional study was conducted from April to June 2022. The study included a total of 13,546 samples. Data on included variables were collected using a checklist. Descriptive statistics were used to present the overall distribution of errors. Binary logistic regression models were applied. Furthermore, using a Sigma scale, the percentage of errors was converted to defects per million opportunities to assess laboratory performance. Finally, the defect per million opportunities was converted to a sigma value using a sigma calculator. Results Of the 13,546 samples and corresponding requests, the overall error rate was 123,296/474,234 (26%): 93,412/47,234 (19.7%) pre‐analytical, 2364/474,234 (0.5%) analytical, and 27,520/474,234 (5.8%) post‐analytical. Of the overall errors, 93,412/123,296 (75.8%), 2364/123,296 (1.9%), and 27,520/123,296 (22.3%) were pre‐analytical, analytical, and post‐analytical errors, respectively. The overall sigma value of the laboratory was 2.2. The sigma values of the pre‐analytical, analytical, and post‐analytical phases were 2.4, 4.1, and 3.1, respectively. Abstract

Abstract Aims To describe the natural history of SARS‐CoV‐2 infection in patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) compared with a control group and to identify predictors of adverse events. Methods and results Three hundred and five patients [age 56.6 ± 16.9 years old, 191 (62.6%) male patients] with HCM and SARS‐Cov‐2 infection were enrolled. The control group consisted of 91 131 infected individuals. Endpoints were (i) SARS‐CoV‐2 related mortality and (ii) severe clinical course [death or intensive care unit (ICU) admission]. New onset of atrial fibrillation, ventricular arrhythmias, shock, stroke, and cardiac arrest were also recorded. Sixty‐nine (22.9%) HCM patients were hospitalized for non‐ICU level care, and 21 (7.0%) required ICU care. Seventeen (5.6%) died: eight (2.6%) of respiratory failure, four (1.3%) of heart failure, two (0.7%) suddenly, and three (1.0%) due to other SARS‐CoV‐2‐related complications. Covariates associated with mortality in the multivariable were age {odds ratio (OR) per 10 year increase 2.25 [95% confidence interval (CI): 1.12–4.51], P = 0.0229}, baseline New York Heart Association class [OR per one‐unit increase 4.01 (95%CI: 1.75–9.20), P = 0.0011], presence of left ventricular outflow tract obstruction [OR 5.59 (95%CI: 1.16–26.92), P = 0.0317], and left ventricular systolic impairment [OR 7.72 (95%CI: 1.20–49.79), P = 0.0316]. Controlling for age and sex and comparing HCM patients with a community‐based SARS‐CoV‐2 cohort, the presence of HCM was associated with a borderline significant increased risk of mortality OR 1.70 (95%CI: 0.98–2.91, P = 0.0600). Conclusions Over one‐fourth of HCM patients infected with SARS‐Cov‐2 required hospitalization, including 6% in an ICU setting. Age and cardiac features related to HCM, including baseline functional class, left ventricular outflow tract obstruction, and systolic impairment, conveyed increased risk of mortality.

Covariates associated with mortality in the multivariable were age {odds ratio (OR) per 10 year increase 2.25 [95% confidence interval (CI): 1.12–4.51], P = 0.0229}, baseline New York Heart Association class [OR per one-unit increase 4.01 (95%CI: 1.75–9.20), P = 0.0011], presence of left ventricular outflow tract obstruction [OR 5.59 (95%CI: 1.16–26.92), P = 0.0317], and left ventricular systolic impairment [OR 7.72 (95%CI: 1.20–49.79), P = 0.0316]. Controlling for age and sex and comparing HCM patients with a community-based SARS-CoV-2 cohort, the presence of HCM was associated with a borderline significant increased risk of mortality OR 1.70 (95%CI: 0.98–2.91, P = 0.0600). Conclusions Over one-fourth of HCM patients infected with SARS-Cov-2 required hospitalization, including 6% in an ICU setting. Age and cardiac features related to HCM, including baseline functional class, left ventricular outflow tract obstruction, and systolic impairment, conveyed increased risk of mortality. Abstract

Abstract Geochemical observations of ocean island and mid‐ocean ridge basalts suggest that abundances of heat‐producing elements (HPEs: U, Th, and K) vary within the mantle. Combined with bulk silicate Earth models and constraints on the Earth's heat budget, these observations suggest the presence of a more enriched (potentially deep and undepleted) reservoir in the mantle. Such a reservoir may be related to seismically observed deep mantle structures known as large low shear velocity provinces (LLSVPs). LLSVPs might represent thermochemical piles of an intrinsically denser composition, and many studies have shown such piles to remain stable over hundreds of Myr or longer. However, few studies have examined if thermochemical piles can remain stable if they are enriched in HPEs, a necessary condition for them to constitute an enriched HPE reservoir. We conduct a suite of mantle convection simulations to examine the effect of HPE enrichment up to 25× the ambient mantle on pile stability. Model results are evaluated against present‐day pile morphology and tested for resulting seismic signatures using self‐consistent potential pile compositions. We find that stable piles can form from an initial basal layer of dense material even if the layer is enriched in HPEs, depending on the density of the layer and degree of HPE enrichment, with denser basal layers requiring increased HPE enrichment to form pile‐like morphology instead of a stable layer. Thermochemical piles or LLSVPs may therefore constitute an enriched reservoir in the deep mantle.

Abstract Background Oculodentodigital dysplasia (ODDD) is a rare disorder with pleiotropic effects involving multiple body systems, caused by mutations in the gap junction protein alpha 1 (GJA1) gene. GJA1 gene encodes a polytopic connexin membrane protein, Cx43, that is a component of connexon membrane channels. Methods We describe two unrelated female probands referred for a genetic review in view of a dysmorphic clinical phenotype. Results Two novel missense mutations in GJA1 that substitute conserved amino acids in the first and second transmembrane domains (NM_000165.5: c.77T>C p.Leu26Pro and NM_000165.5:c.287T>G p.Val96Gly) were detected through targeted sequencing of GJA1. These variants were detected in the heterozygous state in the two Maltese probands and segregated with the disease phenotype. Conclusion This report further expands the mutational spectrum of ODDD.

Abstract

Summary Objective The objective of this study was to examine the cross‐sectional relationship between the expression of norepinephrine transporter (NET), the protein responsible for neuronal uptake‐1, and indices of glycaemia and hyperinsulinaemia, in overweight and obese individuals. Methods Thirteen non‐medicated, non‐smoking subjects, aged 58 ± 1 years (mean ± standard error of the mean), body mass index (BMI) 31.4 ± 1.0 kg m−2, with wide‐ranging plasma glucose and haemoglobin A1c (HbA1c, range 5.1% to 6.5%) participated. They underwent forearm vein biopsy to access sympathetic nerves for the quantification of NET by Western blot, oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT), euglycaemic hyperinsulinaemic clamp, echocardiography and assessments of whole‐body norepinephrine kinetics and muscle sympathetic nerve activity. Results Norepinephrine transporter expression was inversely associated with fasting plasma glucose (r = −0.62, P = 0.02), glucose area under the curve during OGTT (AUC0–120, r = −0.65, P = 0.02) and HbA1c (r = −0.67, P = 0.01), and positively associated with steady‐state glucose utilization during euglycaemic clamp (r = 0.58, P = 0.04). Moreover, NET expression was inversely related to left ventricular posterior wall dimensions (r = −0.64, P = 0.02) and heart rate (r = −0.55, P = 0.05). Indices of hyperinsulinaemia were not associated with NET expression. In stepwise linear regression analysis adjusted for age, body mass index and blood pressure, HbA1c was an independent inverse predictor of NET expression, explaining 45% of its variance. Conclusions Hyperglycaemia is associated with reduced peripheral NET expression. Further studies are required to identify the direction of causality.

Abstract

Identification of cancer-predisposing germline variants in childhood cancer patients is important for therapeutic decisions, disease surveillance and risk assessment for patients, and potentially, also for family members. We investigated the spectrum and prevalence of pathogenic germline variants in selected childhood cancer patients with features suggestive of genetic predisposition to cancer. Germline DNA was subjected to exome sequencing to filter variants in 1048 genes of interest including 176 known cancer predisposition genes (CPGs). An enrichment burden analysis compared rare deleterious germline CPG variants in the patient cohort with those in a healthy aged control population. A subset of predicted deleterious variants in novel candidate CPGs was investigated further by examining matched tumor samples, and the functional impact of AXIN1 variants was analyzed in cultured cells. Twenty-two pathogenic/likely pathogenic (P/LP) germline variants detected in 13 CPGs were identified in 19 of 76 patients (25.0%). Unclear association with the diagnosed cancer types was observed in 11 of 19 patients carrying P/LP CPG variants. The burden of rare deleterious germline variants in autosomal dominant CPGs was significantly higher in study patients versus healthy aged controls. A novel AXIN1 frameshift variant (Ser321fs) may impact the regulation of β-catenin levels. Selection of childhood cancer patients for germline testing based on features suggestive of an underlying genetic predisposition could help to identify carriers of clinically relevant germline CPG variants, and streamline the integration of germline genomic testing in the pediatric oncology clinic.

Abstract

AIMS: To identify the definition for urinary continence (UC) after radical prostatectomy (RP) which reflects best patients' perception of quality of life (QoL). METHODS: Continence was prospectively assessed in 634 patients, 12 months after RP using the International Consultation on Incontinence Questionnaire Short-Form (ICIQ-SF) and the number of pads employed in a 24-hour period (pad usage). We used the one-way ANOVA technique with posthoc pairwise comparisons according to Scheffe's method (homogeneous subsets) for assessing the degree of QoL deficit related to urinary incontinence (UI). RESULTS: The continence prevalence is 64.4%, 74.1%, 88.3%, and 35.8% using "0 pads," "1 safety pad," "1 pad," and "ICIQ score 0" definitions, respectively. Pad usage is moderately strongly associated with ICIQ 1, 2, and 3 (ρ = 0.744, 0.677, and 0.711, respectively; p < 0.001). Concordance between classical UC definitions is acceptable between "0 pads-ICIQ score 0" (K = 0.466), but poor for "1 safety pad" and "1 pad" (K = 0.326 and 0.137, respectively). Patients with "0 pad usage" have better QoL related to urine leakage than patients with "1 safety pad" or "1 pad" (1.41 vs. 2.44 and 3.11, respectively; p < 0.05). There were no significant differences found regarding QoL between patients with ICIQ score 0 and ICIQ score 2 (1.01 vs. 1.63; p = 0.63). CONCLUSIONS: Pad usage and the ICIQ-SF's answers provide useful information. We propose a combined definition (0 pads and ICIQ score ≤2) as it is the definition with the least impact on daily QoL.

Abstract

The biofouling formation of the marine microalga Nannochloropsis gaditana on nontoxic surfaces was quantified on rigid materials, both coated (with fouling release coatings and nanoparticle coatings) and noncoated, to cover a wide range of surface properties from strongly hydrophobic to markedly hydrophilic under conditions similar to those prevailing in outdoor massive cultures of marine microalgae. The effect of seawater on surfaces that presented the best antibiofouling properties was also evaluated. The adhesion intensity on the different surfaces was compared with the predictions of the biocompatibility theories developed by Baier and Vogler using water adhesion tension (τ0 ) as the quantitative parameter of surface wettability. For the most hydrophobic surfaces, τ0 ≤ 0, the microalgae adhesion density increased linearly with τ0 , following the Baier's theory trend. However, for the rest of the surfaces, τ0 ≥ 0, a tendency toward minimum adhesion was observed for amphiphilic surfaces with a τ0 = 36 mJ/m2 , a value close to that which minimizes cell adhesion according to Vogler's theory. The understanding and combination of the two biocompatibility theories could help to design universal antibiofouling surfaces that minimize the van der Waals forces and prevent foulant adsorption by using a thin layer of hydration.

Abstract

Sleep and physical activity are both modifiable behavioural factors that are associated with better health and are potentially related. Following traumatic brain injury, damage to the brain caused by an external force, sleep disturbances are common. Exploring bidirectional relationships between sleep and physical activity might provide insight into whether increasing physical activity could decrease these sleep disturbances. The current study, therefore, examined inter‐ and intra‐individual temporal associations between sleep and daytime physical activity in 64 people with traumatic brain injury reporting sleep problems or fatigue (47 males; mean age, 40 years). Sleep and physical activity were measured using actigraphy with corroborating sleep diaries over 14 consecutive days. Multilevel models were used to examine inter‐ and intra‐individual associations between physical activity and sleep. Inter‐individual variations showed that earlier bedtimes, earlier wake‐up times and lower sleep efficiency were associated with more physical activity. Intra‐individual temporal variations showed no significant association of daytime physical activity with sleep duration or continuity. However, shorter sleep time and less wake after sleep onset than usual were associated with more time spent in light‐intensity activity the next day. Therefore, sleep may have more of an influence on physical activity than physical activity has on sleep in people with traumatic brain injury. In conclusion, the results do not confirm a potential beneficial effect of physical activity on sleep but suggest that improving sleep quality might be relevant to support of a physically active lifestyle in people with traumatic brain injury. Further research is necessary to confirm these results.

Abstract

OBJECTIVE The aim of the study was to investigate the variables associated with work ability, work-family conflict and the relationship between these variables. METHODS An observational prospective study was conducted and involved 436 employees of a Teaching Hospital in Rome. Data collection was performed using the following tools: the Work Ability Index (WAI) and the Work-to-family conflict and Family-to-work conflict Scale (WFC-FWC Scale). Data were analyzed through univariate analysis of variance (ANOVA) and multivariate linear regression, using the SPSS software version 25. RESULTS A direct relationship of the WFC score with two variables (female gender and physicians) and an inverse relationship with other two variables (age and administrative staff) were found. There is a direct relationship between the FWC score and the variable "having sons". The WFC and FWC scores showed a direct relationship between them. The Work Ability presented an almost significant association only with the profession variable, in which administrative staff, followed by physicians, presented a higher WAI score with respect to other professional categories, such as nurses. CONCLUSIONS Wellbeing intervention for health workers should be directed mainly to women, older workers and those with sons. In addition, more attention should be given to nurses, who showed lower work ability scores.

Abstract

CONTEXT To study the prevalence of thyroid dysfunction in a very large unselected population. OBJECTIVE To determine the prevalence of abnormal thyroid function and evaluate potential modulatory factors. DESIGN AND SETTING The Estudio de Atencion Primaria de Navarra, The APNA Study, is a cross-sectional study conducted in northern Spain. It involved 303 883 people, of 20 years of age and older, who live in the Navarra region. Participants are covered by the public healthcare system and medical records are digitalized. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES The information was gathered from e-registered data regarding serum thyrotropin (TSH), thyroid hormones, thyroid antibody concentration and clinical context. Measurements were logged (demographic information and potential thyroid function modulatory factors). RESULTS Serum TSH (mU/L) normal range was established at 0.7-4.28.
