Black joy is a distinctive part of the Black experience. Amid the wakes of the tragic losses of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor, and the resurgence of the Black Lives Matter Movements, in tandem with the rise of the global COVID-19 pandemic, I photograph Black millennial experiences and the site of the White City Estate in Shepherd's Bush, West London as a visual artist, writer and geographer.

This paper reflects on the context of lockdown in a global pandemic, where entire populations have experienced severe curtailments of the opportunity to exercise agency. The experience has made me notice the surprisingly large role that resignation has played in Christian moral thinking in earlier ages. This paper takes the devotional poetry of George Herbert as a case study, since Herbert had a particular preoccupation with the psychology of religious belief in circumstances where the will cannot be deployed to any end. Herbert reflects on the predicament in which the moral life has to continue even though opportunities for the exercise of agency have collapsed. After examining Herbert's poems of affliction, I conclude by setting out a brief case for understanding resignation as a moral practice – a practice that centres not on the will but on imagination and the emotions.

Sir George Paish (1867–1957) was a British economist whose unique position as a journalist, political advisor, and international traveler gave him access to significant world events and leaders. Paish wrote for and edited the financial magazine The Statist and earned recognition as an expert on British and American railways. He lectured and wrote on economics and international finance throughout his adult life and advised David Lloyd George on economic subjects between 1909–1915. Paish's written works provide insight to early 20th‐century economic affairs through the lens of his liberal, free trade philosophy. This article examines many of Paish's most relevant reflections on free trade, following the chronology of his life.

EARLY LIFE George Hogarth Pringle, later an associate of Joseph Lister, was born in Kintail, Scotland in 1830. In 1854, he worked as a dresser at the Royal Infirmary, Edinburgh with Joseph Lister. After serving in the Crimean War, he settled in New South Wales and began practice in Parramatta. PRINGLE AND ANTISEPTIC SURGERY In October 1867, Pringle performed the first operation in Australia using the antiseptic principles advocated 6 months previously in the first of a series of articles published in The Lancet by Joseph Lister. Mystery surrounds how Pringle was able to adopt Lister's principles so quickly. Lister and Pringle had been friends in Edinburgh and previous writers have hypothesized that the two men corresponded whilst another has suggested Pringle was using antiseptic principles prior to Lister's work being published. Both these scenarios are unlikely. The Lancet appears to have been available in Australia within 4 months of publication. CONCLUSION The conjunction of an appropriate case and the arrival of a recent copy of The Lancet highlighting Lister's work is the likely source of Pringle's decision to apply antiseptic principles.

Written in weekly instalments, Michelle Munyikwa's Covid-19 diary reflects upon the experience of an unfolding pandemic from her dual role as a medical trainee and anthropologist living in the United States. In this second instalment of her diary Covid-19 dairy, the author reflects upon ethics, risk, pandemic futures and the murder of George Floyd as the crisis continues in the United States.

On December 14, 1799, 3 prominent physicians-Craik, Brown, and Dick-gathered to examine America's first president, George Washington. He was complaining of severe throat symptoms and was being treated with bloodletting, blistering, and enemas. Dick advised performing an immediate tracheotomy to secure the airway. Both Craik and Brown were not keen on trying tracheotomy and overruled that proposal. Washington was not involved in making that decision. He most likely had acute epiglottitis that proved to be fatal at the end. If Dick had prevailed, a tracheotomy could have saved Washington's life. Human factors analysis of these events shows that his physicians were totally fixated on repeating futile treatments and could not comprehend the need for a radical alternative, like tracheotomy. That was aggravated by an impaired situational awareness and significant resistance to change. Leadership model was also based on hierarchy instead of competency, which might have also contributed to Washington's death.

This summary relates to the consultation held at St George's House, in Windsor, England, on February 2018. The attendees came from across Europe and from the United States, and they discussed a range of initiatives designed to address the challenges in modern family justice and the changes in the social, political, and economic environments that are impacting family life across the globe. Although the challenges are very similar, the approach to resolving them varies from jurisdiction to jurisdiction. The attendees concluded that there is much we can learn from each other, and that greater cooperation between family justice professionals across geographic boundaries would be highly beneficial.

Starting with the laying to rest of George Tyrrell’s body in an Anglican grave, outside the bounds of the Catholic Church, this article considers how Tyrrell could yet understood himself to be within the Church, within the body of Christ. Tyrrell developed a distinction between the visible and invisible Church in such a way that a person like himself could be included within the latter. In this, Tyrrell’s theology anticipated later ideas of the anonymous Christian and the Church as sacrament, his thinking incorporated within the body of more orthodox, conciliar theology.

George W. Bush's presidency provides a fertile ground to further develop the standard model of presidential approval. In contrast to the vast presidential approval literature, early studies of Bush conclude economic conditions had no effect once the war in Iraq began. Rather than require a fundamental rethinking of presidential approval theories, we argue that approval models must take into account issue salience. When a factor is salient, it has a stronger effect. During the Bush presidency, with considerable over-time variation in the salience of the economy, terrorism, and the war in Iraq, each, in turn, powerfully affected Bush's approval.

Much has been written about George Washington as a presidential leader, but little attention has been given to one important aspect of the first president's administration: his role in funding and constructing the nation's new capital city in the District of Columbia. This article highlights Washington's involvement in the creation of the Federal City by focusing on the choices he faced and decisions he made regarding Washington, DC during the last six months he was in office and showing that in terms of this facet of his presidency, he was truly a hands-on leader.

The article suggests Jobberns’ view of geopolitics ultimately rested on the work of British geographer Sir Halford Mackinder overlain by the writing of American political geographers. Jobberns’ geopolitical thinking was, however, also strongly informed by his being a Freemason. WWII, as the overshadowing external event of Jobberns’ early years at Canterbury, amplified his interest in geopolitics both as a way of understanding the world and, at a time when geography was not universally accepted as a university discipline, as a means of promoting to a wider public the utility of a geographical perspective on world affairs.

This article traces the various phases in the life of George Rude (1910-93), starting with the son of a conservative family converting to communism following a chance trip to Russia as a twenty-two year old. He combined teaching modern languages in secondary schools with being an active functionary of the Communist Party of Great Britain (CPGB), and in the late-1940s he redirected his interests to the study of French revolutionary history, finally securing an academic position in Australia. The purpose of this article is not to write about Rude's academic life as such but, rather, to outline the nature and extent of his work on behalf of the CPGB and how this impacted on his life and work. In particular, why did he assume, and then shed, the mantle of party activist, and how did his Marxism affect the type of history he wrote?

This prosopographical study of the chaplains of Frederick Louis, prince of Wales (1707-51), explores their political, cultural, theological and intellectual significance. It examines their dual allegiance to George II (as the Supreme Governor of the Church of England) and to Leicester House. It advances Frederick's credentials as a significant patron of the British Enlightenment and demonstrates that his clerical patronage made an important contribution to the cultural and intellectual dynamism of his rival court and to his conscious self-fashioning as a connoisseur of the arts and as an enlightened Patriot Prince.

This article focuses upon the work of prison author and activist George Jackson and his work with the Black Panther Party. Thus far, historians’ emphasis upon Jackson's relationship with Bay Area radicals has eclipsed the importance of his work on behalf of African American prisoners and especially his role within the Black Panther Party. In focusing so heavily upon events outside California's prisons, they have failed to explain his evolution from a petty criminal to political activist; we do not yet understand the wider historical context within which he emerged as a spokesperson for the most oppressed and vilified group of the 1960s and 1970s: African American prisoners. This article therefore offers a more expansive view of Jackson's life and situates him within the wider social and political milieu of California's penal system during the 1960s and 1970s. It is only by exploring the environment in which Jackson lived that we can start fully to appreciate the origins and significance of his revolutionary ideology, as well as his relationship with black activism inside and outside the prison walls.

Working within the sub-discipline of the Geographies of “(dis)Ability,” this article employs a mixed-method approach—using go-along interviews and barrier identification to explore disablement in the City of Prince George, a resource-centred city in British Columbia's northern interior. We shed light on how various habituations of ableism (e.g., inattention to accessibility planning, inadequate and weakly enforced building codes) are implicated in the disablement of individuals. In particular, we focus on ways in which the production of Prince George as a resource-centred, “winter city” reproduces inaccessibility in the landscape, as revealed in the experiences and impressions of residents living with impairment. The approach presented in this article offers unique insights into disablement as it has taken place in and through this remote, northern city. La condition permanente de l'invalidite : vivre au quotidien avec le capacitisme a Prince George, Colombie-Britannique Partant de la sous-discipline des geographies de l'incapacite, cet article repose sur une approche methodologique mixte qui comprend des entretiens en situation et une demarche d'identification d'obstacles, en vue de realiser une etude sur l'invalidite a Prince George, une ville d'extraction de ressources situee dans la partie continentale nord de la Colombie-Britannique. Ces travaux visent a elucider les diverses insensibilisations face au capacitisme (par exemple, le manque d'interet pour l'amenagement de l'accessibilite, les codes de construction inadequats et peu appliques) et comment celles-ci ont des consequences directes sur l'invalidite des individus. Il est question plus particulierement des moyens par lesquels la production de Prince George en tant que « ville hivernale » d'extraction de ressources confere au milieu un caractere d'inaccessibilite, tel que manifeste a travers l'experience et les impressions de residents vivant avec un handicap. Tom L. Johnson made his mark on politics far from Capitol Hill, in the gritty world of turn-of-the-century Cleveland, Ohio. Barely 30 years old and at the height of a successful career as an inventor, steel manufacturer, and street railway monopolist, Tom Loftin Johnson experienced a change of heart. After discovering the ideas of Henry George, Johnson became a lifelong advocate of the single tax, which he used to guide his new career in politics. In 1901, Cleveland voters elected Johnson to the first of his four terms as mayor of the industrial city of 400,000 people. During his eight-year reign as chief executive, Cleveland took over essential services such as garbage collection, street cleaning, and lighting from private enterprise. Johnson helped humanize the city's correctional system by replacing the old workhouse with a network of farm colonies designed to rehabilitate wayward youths and adults convicted of petty crimes. Largely as a result of Johnson's efforts, Cleveland won constitutional home rule, a lower streetcar fare, the referendum, and higher taxes on the corporations that amassed giant fortunes through perpetual public franchise grants. For a short time, while he was still mayor, Cleveland owned and operated its own streetcar company, a rarity in early 20th-century America. All of these accomplishments made Johnson something of a hero to progressive reformers. The muckraker Lincoln Steffens famously called Johnson “the best Mayor of the best-governed city in the United States.”

SAN DIEGO — Understanding the myriad of reasons that transfer students benefit your institution may help your institution's officials better understand what to look for during the recruitment phase. In a session at the recent National Association for College Admission Counseling annual conference, panelists Jim Rawlins, assistant vice president of enrollment management from the University of Oregon; Gary Clark, director of undergraduate admissions from the University of California, Los Angeles; Kirk Brennan, director of undergraduate admission from the University of Southern California; David Burge, vice president of enrollment management from George Mason University; and Dan Nannini, transfer center director from Santa Monica College, discussed the best practices, benefits and challenges of recruiting transfer students to their respective campuses.

According to George, many of the high profile business failures and bankruptcies of recent years were caused by leadership failures. Wrongly-chosen CEOs “put their companies at risk by focusing on the spoils of leadership instead of building organizations for the long-term.” We need instead authentic, values-based people, whom he calls “True North Leaders.” George points out that “trust is the coin of the realm” in business, and trust has been seriously eroded. In showing how leaders can discover their True North, he draws on his research and anecdotes from his own life, including his decision to accept a position as CEO of Medtronic, from which he retired in 2002.

This essay reconsiders the legacy of Ojibwa travellers who performanced "tableaux vivants" or 'living pictures' alongside George Catlin's Indian Gallery in Paris, 1845-46, many of whom died of smallpox before returning home. Contemporary Saulteaux artist Robert Houle's architectural installation, Paris/Ojibwa, first exhibited at the Canadian Cultural Center in Paris in 2010, features a stage set peopled by paintings of the deceased travellers. Paris/Ojibwa invites us to see how "tableaux vivants" incorporated an Ojibwa understanding of the potential liveliness of images and objects. When wedded to complex indigenous notions of personhood "tableaux viviants" reversed the ambitions of nineteenth-century ethnography: instead of turning living Natives into static images, they reanimated pictures. Inviting audiences to participte in an indigenous view of a shared modernity, Paris/Ojibwa restores sociability to the archive of Ojibwa representations and models transcultural materialism inside Western institutions.

During the mid-1700s, an uneducated layman named George Weekes began preaching to Native Americans in the town of Harwich, Massachusetts. Weekes’ missionary activity triggered a passionate response from Nathaniel Stone, the local minister, and inaugurated a debate regarding ministerial qualifications within the community. Scholars who study English missionary activity in colonial New England tend to focus upon the careers of trained clergy, such as John Eliot or Josiah Cotton. Other individuals, who possessed questionable moral character and little education, also preached to New England Indians, however. In this instance, the career of George Weekes, a rogue missionary, reveals that contact with Native Americans could shape ecclesiastical life in colonial Massachusetts. It also suggests that Native Americans encountered popular, as well as elite, English religious culture when they interacted with English missionaries in early New England.

In this paper I examine the visions and teachings of George Umai (c.1938–1998), an Anglican lay leader of West Kwara'ae, Malaita, Solomon Islands. In his prophecies, Umai traced Malaitans, Solomon Islanders, and many other Oceanic peoples to his ancestors who he claimed fled from Jerusalem to Malaita in CE62. According to Umai, they brought the Ark of the Covenant from the Jerusalem Temple to Kwara'ae, Malaita where they buried it. I examine Umai's vision of the Ark of the Covenant and its apocalyptic and theocratic significance for Malaita and the world. In Umai's visions, teachings, and practice, Malaitan, Jewish, and Christian genealogy, apocalypse, and theocracy came together in a distinctive ethno-theology that paralleled similar and prefigured later religious movements in Malaita but was too idiosyncratic to sustain.

The neurochemistry community at large and the Advisory Board of The International Symposia on Cholinergic Mechanisms mourn the loss of Alexander George Karczmar, the elected Honorary President of these international symposia, who passed away peacefully in his Chicago home at the age of 100 on August 17, 2017. For many of us Alex was the essence of cholinergic signaling, and personified its versatile power to send messages between the brain and the peripheral tissues and organs, and to connect between body and soul.
