Abstract Objective This study investigated the effectiveness and tolerability of brivaracetam (BRV) monotherapy in a large series of patients with epilepsy. Method This was a multicenter, retrospective, observational, non‐interventional study in 24 hospitals across Spain. Patients aged ≥18 years who started on BRV monotherapy, either as first‐line or following conversion, at least 1 year before database closure were included. Patients were evaluated at baseline and at 3, 6 and 12 months after initiation of BRV monotherapy, in accordance with usual clinical practice at these centers. Data were collected retrospectively from patients' individual charts by participating physicians. The primary effectiveness and safety endpoints were the percentage of seizure‐free patients 1 year after initiation of BRV monotherapy and the proportion of patients reporting adverse events (AEs) over the complete follow‐up period. Retention rates and subpopulation analysis (levetiracetam switchers, elderly and different etiologies) were also investigated. Results A total of 276 patients were included (48 with BRV as first‐line monotherapy and 228 who converted to BRV monotherapy). The overall retention rate in monotherapy at 12 months was 89.9% (87.5% for first‐line monotherapy group; 90.4% for conversion‐to‐monotherapy group). Seizure‐freedom rates at 12 months were 77.8% (75% for first‐line monotherapy group; 78.4% for conversion‐to‐monotherapy group). AEs occurred in 39.5% of patients at 12 months (35.4% for first‐line monotherapy group; 40.4% for conversion‐to‐monotherapy group). Most AEs were mild‐to‐moderate. The most frequent AEs were irritability (12.3%) and dizziness (10.1%). The most frequent AEs leading to BRV withdrawal were dizziness (1.8%) and memory problems (1.4%). Similar outcomes in terms of effectiveness and tolerability of BRV monotherapy were observed in patients switching from levetiracetam, those with different epilepsy etiologies, and elderly patients. Significance BRV was effective and well tolerated both as first‐line monotherapy and following conversion to monotherapy in a real‐world setting of patients with epilepsy. Plain Language Summary The goal of the medical treatment of epilepsy is to ensure best possible patient quality of life, by maximizing seizure control and minimizing medication toxicity. Brivaracetam (BRV) is a new‐generation epilepsy treatment that is well tolerated by patients. In our study, monotherapy with BRV reduced seizures in patients who had not received other treatments and in patients who switched from a previous treatment to BRV monotherapy. BRV was well tolerated and also effective in sensitive patients (i.e., the elderly and those who had epilepsy caused by a brain tumor or a brain injury).

Abstract Interleukins are central in the modulation of immune responses. This narrative review aims to summarize the growing evidence on their significance as key drivers of numerous cutaneous diseases with a special focus in some of the more prevalent chronic inflammatory dermatologic diseases such as psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, allergic contact dermatitis, urticaria, and hidradenitis suppurativa. Additionally, we discuss their relevance in the recent developments in targeted therapies that have significantly transformed the management of these skin conditions. To this end, we have conducted a comprehensive search through the Cochrane Library and Database of Systematic Reviews and the MEDLINE search engine, and we have summarized the available clinical evidence considering up to 466 records including meta‐analyses, systematic reviews, reviews and clinical trials. Ultimately, this review intents to foster both dermatologist and non‐dermatologist physicians' understanding of the immunology behind the clinical manifestations of some of the most common inflammatory skin diseases and engage with the novel therapeutic approaches by providing accessible insights into the implications of interleukin pathways dysregulation.

Abstract River networks contribute disproportionately to the global carbon cycle. However, global estimates of carbon emissions from inland waters are based on perennial rivers, even though more than half of the world's river length is prone to drying. We quantified CO2 and CH4 emissions from flowing water and dry riverbeds across six European drying river networks (DRNs, 120 reaches) and three seasons and identified drivers of emissions using local and regional variables. Drivers of emissions from flowing water differed between perennial and non‐perennial reaches, both CO2 and CH4 emissions were controlled partly by the annual drying severity, reflecting a drying legacy effect. Upscaled CO2 emissions for the six DRNs at the annual scale revealed that dry riverbeds contributed up to 77% of the annual emissions, calling for an urgent need to include non‐perennial rivers in global estimates of greenhouse gas emissions.

Abstract Background Sarcopenia and low areal bone mineral density (aBMD) are prevalent musculoskeletal complications after paediatric cancer treatment. However, their relationship has not been examined in young paediatric cancers survivors. This study aimed to evaluate aBMD differences according to sarcopenia status and the risk of low aBMD Z‐score in young paediatric cancer survivors with sarcopenia confirmed/probable. Methods This cross‐sectional study included 116 paediatric cancer survivors (12.1 ± 3.3 years old; 42.2% female). Handgrip strength was used to assessed muscle strength. Dual‐energy X‐ray absorptiometry estimated aBMD (g/cm2) and appendicular lean mass index (ALMI, kg/m2). ‘No sarcopenia’ was defined when muscle strength was >decile 2. ‘Sarcopenia probable’ was defined when muscle strength was ≤ decile 2 and ALMI Z‐score was > −1.5 standard deviation (SD). ‘Sarcopenia confirmed’ was defined when muscle strength was ≤ decile 2 and ALMI Z‐score ≤ −1.5 SD. Analysis of covariance and logistic regression, adjusted for time from treatment completion, radiotherapy exposure, calcium intake, and physical activity, was used to evaluate aBMD and estimate the odds ratios (ORs) of low aBMD (aBMD Z‐score < −1.0). Abstract Extreme hydrological and thermal regimes characterize the Mediterranean zone and can influence the phenology of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in reservoirs. Our study examined the seasonal changes in GHG emissions of a shallow, eutrophic, hardwater reservoir in Spain. We observed distinctive seasonal patterns for each gas. CH4 emissions substantially increased during stratification, influenced predominantly by the increase in water temperature, net ecosystem production, and the decline in reservoir mean depth. N2O emissions mirrored CH4's seasonal trend, significantly correlating to water temperature, wind speed, and gross primary production. Conversely, CO2 emissions decreased during stratification and displayed a quadratic, rather than a linear relationship with water temperature—an unexpected deviation from CH4 and N2O emission patterns—likely associated with photosynthetic uptake of bicarbonate and formation of intracellular calcite that might be exported to sediments. This investigation highlights the imperative of integrating these idiosyncratic patterns into GHG emissions models, enhancing their predictive power.

Ultrasound imaging further identified a simple cyst and enlarged, vascularized lymph nodes in both axillae.

Abstract Flight initiation distance (FID), the distance at which an organism begins to flee from an approaching threat, is a major component of antipredator escape behavior and a potential indicator of threat perception in fishes. In this study, we analyzed the FID of three important rocky‐reef fish species targeted by spearfishers, which are of commercial and recreational importance. We tested predictions that FID to a diver threat increases with the following factors: (1) fish body size, (2) less restricted access regimes, and (3) increased historical fishing pressure. We studied three size ranges of three rocky‐reef fish species, in three different access regimes (i.e., open access, territorial user rights for fishery areas, no‐take marine protected areas), and in two regions (northern and central region with different levels of fishing pressure depending on the species). We conducted an ANOVA to analyze pairwise interactions. We used the mean square criterion to select the models that best explained the variation of our response variable. Our findings indicate that FID can be distinctly elucidated by factors such as individual size, species, access regimes, and regions. Additionally, our models show that interactions involving regions and either species or size further contribute to explain FID variability. FID was higher in larger fishes and those of higher commercial value, outside marine reserves and in the region with the highest historical fishing pressures (based on landings data). This study supports the predictions that increased FID is associated with the threat posed by spearfishing activities. Furthermore, our findings indicate that spearfishing may already be altering the behavior of rocky‐reef fishes on the north‐central coast of Chile.

Abstract Reservoirs act as carbon sinks when sedimentation of particulate organic carbon (POC) exceeds CO2 and CH4 emissions. Here, we study the poorly explored process where phytoplankton‐derived acidic polysaccharides (APs) aggregate into particulate organic matter, promoting carbon export to sediments. This source of POC in sediments can mineralize to CO2 and CH4 over various timescales. Our research, centered on a Mediterranean reservoir, elucidates phenological trends of APs and POC sedimentation and identifies their predominant drivers. Our findings present synchronic sedimentation patterns of POC and APs but identify a 2‐week delay between POC sedimentation and CH4 emissions. Despite its eutrophic status, our data demonstrate this reservoir's role as a carbon sink, sequestering 4.33 g C m−2 yr−1. This highlights the need to consider various time scales when quantifying carbon budgets in reservoirs.

Store‐operated Ca2+ entry (SOCE) is a major mechanism for Ca2+ influx in colorectal cancer (CRC) cells. This mechanism, regulated by the filling state of the intracellular Ca2+ stores, is mediated by the endoplasmic reticulum Ca2+ sensors of the stromal interaction molecules (STIM) family [stromal interaction molecule 1 (STIM1) and STIM2] and the Ca2+‐release‐activated Ca2+ channels constituted by Orai family members, with predominance of calcium release‐activated calcium channel protein 1 (Orai1). CRC cells exhibit enhanced SOCE due to remodeling of the expression of the key SOCE molecular components. The enhanced SOCE supports a variety of cancer hallmarks. Here, we show that treatment of the colorectal adenocarcinoma cell lines HT‐29 and Caco‐2 with inanimate Lacticaseibacillus paracasei (CECT9610) and Lactiplantibacillus plantarum (CECT9608) attenuates SOCE, although no detectable effect is seen on SOCE in normal colon mucosa cells. The effect of Lacticaseibacillus paracasei and Lactiplantibacillus plantarum postbiotics was mediated by downregulation of Orai1 and STIM1, while the expression levels of Orai3 and STIM2 remained unaltered. Treatment of HT‐29 and Caco‐2 cells with inanimate Lacticaseibacillus paracasei and Lactiplantibacillus plantarum impairs in vitro migration by a mechanism likely involving attenuation of focal adhesion kinase (FAK) tyrosine phosphorylation. Cell treatment with the Orai1 inhibitor synta‐66 attenuates SOCE and prevents any further effect of Lacticaseibacillus paracasei and Lactiplantibacillus plantarum postbiotics. Together, our results indicate for the first time that Lacticaseibacillus paracasei and Lactiplantibacillus plantarum postbiotics selectively exert negative effects on Ca2+ influx through SOCE in colorectal adenocarcinoma cell lines, providing evidence for an attractive strategy against CRC.

Abstract It has been well documented that the usage of a textured cover layer reduces reflection from the air‐solar cell interface, which ultimately enhances the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of a solar cell. The most commonly used patterns, such as pyramids, micropillars, nanowires (NW), and nanoholes have been widely studied and optimized. Besides using such NWs to enhance light absorption, this work also additionally considers the concept of mimicking the antireflection coating of single or multiple layers in minimizing the reflectance and thus enhancing the total absorptance further. It is shown here that at least one order of magnitude shorter multilayer NW pattern of 268 nm total height can outperform a standard NW of 4270 nm height, which needs less material and can also be fabricated at a reduced cost. Furthermore, the proposed design with reduced height has a significantly lower surface‐to‐volume ratio, which also reduces surface recombination loss than the other textured surface patterns. The results presented in this work have been comprehensively analyzed by initially optimizing optical absorption and then completing the electrical simulations. The optimized design in conjunction with a back reflector offers an efficiency as high as 16.434%.

Abstract Background The immature platelet fraction (IPF), a parameter obtained by the Sysmex XN‐1000V analyzer, is used in humans to differentiate between central (CEN) and peripheral (PER) thrombocytopenia (TP) but has not been evaluated in small animals. Objectives Compare IPF between healthy, clinical non‐TP and TP dogs and cats, study IPF in different causes of TP in dogs and cats and, establish IPF reference intervals (RIs), and study the effect of age and sex on IPF in healthy dogs and cats. Animals A total of 3281 dogs and 726 cats. Methods Retrospective review of medical records. Animals were classified as nonthrombocytopenic (healthy group and group of clinical patients without TP [NTP]) or TP. These latter animals were subclassified as pseudothrombocytopenia (PSE), CEN and PER, based on evaluation of platelet clumps, estimated platelet count in blood smears and final diagnosis. Blood samples were evaluated using a Sysmex XN‐1000V with a specific platelet channel (PLT‐F). Results The IPF was significantly different between each subtype of TP in both species. Abstract Physiological oscillations, such as those involved in brain activity, heartbeat, and respiration, display inherent rhythmicity across various timescales. However, adaptive behavior arises from the interaction between these intrinsic rhythms and external environmental cues. In this study, we used multimodal neurophysiological recordings, simultaneously capturing signals from the central and autonomic nervous systems (CNS and ANS), to explore the dynamics of brain and body rhythms in response to rhythmic auditory stimulation across three conditions: baseline (no auditory stimulation), passive auditory processing, and active auditory processing (discrimination task). Our findings demonstrate that active engagement with auditory stimulation synchronizes both CNS and ANS rhythms with the external rhythm, unlike passive and baseline conditions, as evidenced by power spectral density (PSD) and coherence analyses. Importantly, phase angle analysis revealed a consistent alignment across participants between their physiological oscillatory phases at stimulus or response onsets. This alignment was associated with reaction times, suggesting that certain phases of physiological oscillations are spontaneously prioritized across individuals due to their adaptive role in sensorimotor behavior. These results highlight the intricate interplay between CNS and ANS rhythms in optimizing sensorimotor responses to environmental demands, suggesting a potential mechanism of embodied predictive processing.

Abstract Cancer cachexia manifests as whole body wasting, however, the precise mechanisms governing the alterations in skeletal muscle and cardiac anabolism have yet to be fully elucidated. In this study, we explored changes in anabolic processes in both skeletal and cardiac muscles in the Yoshida AH‐130 ascites hepatoma model of cancer cachexia. AH‐130 tumor‐bearing rats experienced significant losses in body weight, skeletal muscle, and heart mass. Skeletal and cardiac muscle loss was associated with decreased ribosomal (r)RNA, and hypophosphorylation of the eukaryotic factor 4E binding protein 1. Endoplasmic reticulum stress was evident by higher activating transcription factor mRNA in skeletal muscle and growth arrest and DNA damage‐inducible protein (GADD)34 mRNA in both skeletal and cardiac muscles. Tumors provoked an increase in tissue expression of interferon‐γ in the heart, while an increase in interleukin‐1β mRNA was apparent in both skeletal and cardiac muscles. We conclude that compromised skeletal muscle and heart mass in the Yoshida AH‐130 ascites hepatoma model involves a marked reduction translational capacity and efficiency. Furthermore, our observations suggest that endoplasmic reticulum stress and tissue production of pro‐inflammatory factors may play a role in the development of skeletal and cardiac muscle wasting.

Abstract Palaeocurrent analysis is vital for basin analysis and helps in the interpretation of depositional environments (along‐slope or downslope). For that, it is crucial to have multiple measuring methods at hand to apply palaeocurrent analysis with a wide range of different datasets (outcrops, cores and photographs). Here, two relatively underexploited palaeocurrent measurement techniques are assessed when applied to trough cross‐stratification observed in the Arenazzolo Formation at Eraclea Minoa (Sicily). The first technique is a novel design of a qualitative approach to infer palaeocurrent directions from photographs of two‐dimensional sedimentary structures. The second technique involves measurements of the anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility from drilled samples. A broad agreement, with overlapping uncertainty boundaries, is observed between results from both techniques. This agreement validates the use of trough cross‐strata to infer palaeocurrent directions. Moreover, the addition of photographs improves reproducibility and prevents a bias towards the best‐exposed troughs. The application of both techniques to outcrops and sedimentary cores provides new opportunities for palaeocurrent analysis in any type of sedimentary environment.

Abstract Diverse patterns of climate and edaphic factors challenge detection of soil property change in the US Great Plains. Because detectable soil change can take decades, insights into the trajectory of soil properties frequently require long‐term site monitoring and, where available, associated soil archives to enable comparisons with initial or baseline states. Unfortunately, few multi‐decadal soil change investigations have been conducted in this region. Here, we document effects of dryland cropping on a suite of soil properties by comparing matched historic (1947) and contemporary (2018) soil samples from the Haas Soil Archive at three sites in the US Great Plains: Moccasin, MT, Akron, CO, and Big Spring, TX. Current analytical methods were used to provide insight into changes in soil texture, pH, carbon, and micronutrients at 0‐ to 15.2‐cm and 15.2‐ to 30.5‐cm depths. Changes in direction and magnitude of soil properties over 71 years were site specific. Changes in textural class occurred at all sites, with Moccasin and Akron transitioning from loam to clay loam and Big Spring from sandy clay loam to sandy loam. The soil pH reaction class changed from slightly alkaline to moderately acid at Akron and slightly alkaline to moderately alkaline at Big Spring. At 0–15.2 cm, soil organic carbon decreased by 15% and 36% at Moccasin and Big Spring, respectively, but increased by 15% at Akron. Soil micronutrients generally declined at all sites. Weather‐related variables derived from air temperature and precipitation records were not correlated with soil change. Inferred factors contributing to soil change included on‐site management, inherent soil features, weather metrics not evaluated, or a combination thereof.

Abstract The Africanized honey bee, a hybrid of Apis mellifera scutellata from Africa with European subspecies, has been considered an invasive species and a problem for beekeeping. Africanized bees arrived in Mexico in 1986, 30 years after their accidental release in Brazil. Although government programs were implemented for its eradication, Africanized populations persist in Mexico, but precise information on the patterns of genetic introgression and racial ancestry is scarce. We determined maternal and parental racial ancestry of managed and feral honey bees across the five beekeeping regions of Mexico, using mitochondrial (mtDNA, COI‐COII intergenic region) and nuclear markers (94 ancestrally informative SNPs), to assess the relationship between beekeeping management, beekeeping region, altitude, and latitude with the distribution of maternal and parental racial ancestry. Results revealed a predominantly African ancestry in the Mexican honey bees, but the proportion varied according to management, beekeeping regions, and latitude. The Mexican honey bees showed 31 haplotypes of four evolutionary lineages (A, M, C, and O). Managed honey bees had mitochondrial and nuclear higher proportions of European ancestry than feral honey bees, which had a higher proportion of African ancestry. Beekeeping regions of lower latitudes had higher proportions of African nuclear ancestry. Managed and feral honey bees showed differences in the proportion of maternal and nuclear racial ancestry. Managed honey bees from the Yucatan Peninsula and feral honey bees had a higher mtDNA than nuclear proportions of African ancestry. Managed honey bees, except those on the Yucatan Peninsula, had a higher nuclear than mtDNA proportion of African ancestry. Our study demonstrates that Africanized honey bee populations are genetically diverse and well established in Mexico, which highlights the limitations of management and government programs to contain the Africanization process and demands the incorporation of this lineage in any breeding program for sustainable beekeeping.

Abstract The decline of honey bee populations significantly impacts the human food supply due to poor pollination and yield decreases of essential crop species. Given the reduction of pollinators, research into critical landscape components, such as floral resource availability and land use change, might provide valuable information about the nutritional status and health of honey bee colonies. To address this issue, we examine the effects of landscape factors like agricultural area, urban area, and climatic factors, including maximum temperature, minimum temperature, relative humidity, and precipitation, on honey bee hive populations and nutritional health of 326 honey bee colonies across varying landscapes in Mexico. DNA metabarcoding facilitated the precise identification of pollen from 267 plant species, encompassing 243 genera and 80 families, revealing a primary herb‐based diet. Areas characterized by high landscape diversity exhibited greater pollen diversity within the colony. Conversely, colonies situated in regions with higher proportions of agricultural and urban landscapes demonstrated lower bee density. The maximum ambient temperature outside hives positively correlated with pollen diversity, aligning with a simultaneous decrease in bee density. Conversely, higher relative humidity positively influenced both the bee density of the colony and the diversity of foraged pollen. Our national‐level study investigated pollen dietary availability and colony size in different habitat types, latitudes, climatic conditions, and varied levels and types of disturbances. This effort was taken to gain a better insight into the mechanisms driving declines in honey bee populations. This study illustrates the need for more biodiverse agricultural landscapes, the preservation of diverse habitats, and the conservation of natural and semi‐natural spaces. These measures can help to improve the habitat quality of other bee species, as well as restore essential ecosystem processes, such as pollination and pest control.

Abstract Aim The rate of readmission after hospitalisation for respiratory diseases has become a common and challenging clinical problem. Social and functional patient variables could help identify cases at high risk of readmission. The aim was to identify the nursing diagnoses that were associated with readmission after hospitalisation for respiratory disease in Spain. Design Case‐control study within the cohort of patients admitted for respiratory disease during 2016–19 in a tertiary public hospital in Spain (n = 3781). Methods Cases were patients who were readmitted within the first 30 days of discharge, and their controls were the remaining patients. All nursing diagnoses (n = 130) were collected from the electronic health record. They were then grouped into 29 informative diagnostic categories. Clinical confounder‐adjusted odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) were calculated using logistic regression models. Results The readmission rate was 13.1%. The nursing diagnoses categories ‘knowledge deficit’ (OR: 1.61; 95%CI: 1.13–2.31), ‘impaired skin integrity and risk of ulcer infection’ (OR: 1.45; 95%CI: 1.06–1.97) and ‘activity intolerance associated with fatigue’ (OR: 1.56; 95%CI: 1.21–2.01) were associated with an increased risk of suffering an episode of hospital readmission rate at 30% after hospital discharge, and this was independent of sociodemographic background, care variables and comorbidity. Patient or public contribution The nursing diagnoses assigned as part of the care plan of patients during hospital admission may be useful for predicting readmissions.

Abstract An eco‐monitoring programme to assess faunal biodiversity in the main rivers of the northern Iberian Peninsula (Spain) reveals the first occurrence of the marbled crayfish Procambarus virginalis (Decapoda: Cambaridae) in Iberian inland waters. Iberian specimens have been identified by combining morphological and genetic traits. We discuss the most plausible pathways and introduction vectors, its potential invasiveness and subsequent impacts on host localities. Our preliminary results raise concern about the potential threat of P. virginalis to native fauna and ecosystem dynamics, as P. virginalis was found in an area of great cultural and ecological importance with relevant populations of endangered species. Due to the invasive history of the marbled crayfish, eradication of these individuals is urgent. This study confirms the importance of early warning systems for exotic species, keeping the population, forest guards and field technicians informed about potential invasive species to execute a rapid and effective response.

Abstract Background Accurately determining the epidemiology of dermatological diseases such as hidradenitis suppurativa (HS), psoriasis (PsO), chronic urticaria (CU) and/or atopic dermatitis (AD) is challenging due to variations in prevalence and disease severity in the reported literature. Objectives The DERMACLEAR study aims to use natural language processing (NLP) to assess the proportions of patients with HS, PsO, CU and/or AD, and obtain information on patient profiles, patient journeys, and disease and healthcare burden in Spain. Here, the study design and objectives of the DERMACLEAR study are described and the precision of the NLP system used is assessed. Methods This study will retrospectively collect patient information from electronic health records (EHRs) at dermatology departments from seven tertiary hospitals in Spain. The NLP system was developed by IOMED Medical Solutions and was verified internally (IOMED scientific team) and externally (principal investigators of each hospital) to determine its precision in identifying patients with HS, PsO, CU and/or AD. Furthermore, internal verification was performed on other medical variables relevant to the study. Results To date, the DERMACLEAR study has retrospectively collected data from 54,458 patients with HS, PsO, CU and/or AD (HS: 5045; PsO: 32,559; CU: 8397; AD: 12,492). The average precision of the NLP system to identify patients diagnosed with HS, PsO, CU, and/or AD across all hospitals exceeded 95% via external and internal verification. Conclusions Results from the DERMACLEAR study will increase the real‐world evidence of clinical practice, obtaining a large amount of information on patients with the studied diseases. The NLP system used is precise in identifying patients diagnosed with HS, PsO, CU and/or AD, and other medical variables from EHRs, highlighting that it is a valid system to use in the DERMACLEAR study.

Abstract Lightning is one of the main sources of NOx in the Earth's atmosphere. However, there is a large variability in NOx production during the lifetime of thunderstorms. In this study, we used the TROPOspheric Monitoring Instrument (TROPOMI) cloud and NO2 research products along with Lightning Mapping Array (LMA) measurements to investigate the possible relation between the amount of NOx produced per lightning flash and flash channel length in the Ebro Valley. We found that there is a positive relationship between both variables. In turn, the vertical structure of the analyzed lightning flashes indicates that longer flashes could release more LNOx at lower altitudes than shorter flashes, while higher flash rates produce less LNOx per flash.

Abstract Objective This study investigated early, real‐world outcomes with cenobamate (CNB) in a large series of patients with highly drug‐resistant epilepsy within a Spanish Expanded Access Program (EAP). Method This was a multicenter, retrospective, observational study in 14 hospitals. Inclusion criteria were age ≥18 years, focal seizures, and EAP authorization. Data were sourced from patient clinical records. Primary effectiveness endpoints included reductions (100%, ≥90%, ≥75%, and ≥50%) or worsening in seizure frequency at 3‐, 6‐, and 12‐month visits and at the last visit. Safety endpoints included rates of adverse events (AEs) and AEs leading to discontinuation. Results The study included 170 patients. At baseline, median epilepsy duration was 26 years and median number of seizures/month was 11.3. The median number of prior antiseizure medications (ASMs) and concomitant ASMs were 12 and 3, respectively. Mean CNB dosages/day were 176 mg, 200 mg, and 250 mg at 3, 6, and 12 months. Retention rates were 98.2%, 94.5%, and 87% at 3, 6, and 12 months. At last available visit, the rate of seizure freedom was 13.3%; ≥90%, ≥75%, and ≥50% responder rates were 27.9%, 45.5%, and 63%, respectively. Abstract Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) as a staple crop is closely interwoven into the development of modern society. Its influence on culture and economic development is global. Recent instability in wheat markets has demonstrated its importance in guaranteeing food security across national borders. Climate change threatens food security as it interacts with a multitude of factors impacting wheat production. The challenge needs to be addressed with a multidisciplinary perspective delivered across research, private, and government sectors. Many experimental studies have identified the major biotic and abiotic stresses impacting wheat production, but fewer have addressed the combinations of stresses that occur simultaneously or sequentially during the wheat growth cycle. Here, we argue that biotic and abiotic stress interactions, and the genetics and genomics underlying them, have been insufficiently addressed by the crop science community. We propose this as a reason for the limited transfer of practical and feasible climate adaptation knowledge from research projects into routine farming practice. To address this gap, we propose that novel methodology integration can align large volumes of data available from crop breeding programs with increasingly cheaper omics tools to predict wheat performance under different climate change scenarios. Underlying this is our proposal that breeders design and deliver future wheat ideotypes based on new or enhanced understanding of the genetic and physiological processes that are triggered when wheat is subjected to combinations of stresses. By defining this to a trait and/or genetic level, new insights can be made for yield improvement under future climate conditions.

Abstract Non‐coding RNAs (crRNAs) produced from clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR) loci and CRISPR‐associated (Cas) proteins of the prokaryotic CRISPR‐Cas systems form complexes that interfere with the spread of transmissible genetic elements through Cas‐catalysed cleavage of foreign genetic material matching the guide crRNA sequences. The easily programmable targeting of nucleic acids enabled by these ribonucleoproteins has facilitated the implementation of CRISPR‐based molecular biology tools for in vivo and in vitro modification of DNA and RNA targets. Despite the diversity of DNA‐targeting Cas nucleases so far identified, native and engineered derivatives of the Streptococcus pyogenes SpCas9 are the most widely used for genome engineering, at least in part due to their catalytic robustness and the requirement of an exceptionally short motif (5′‐NGG‐3′ PAM) flanking the target sequence. However, the large size of the SpCas9 variants impairs the delivery of the tool to eukaryotic cells and smaller alternatives are desirable. Here, we identify in a metagenome a new CRISPR‐Cas9 system associated with a smaller Cas9 protein (EHCas9) that targets DNA sequences flanked by 5′‐NGG‐3′ PAMs. We develop a simplified EHCas9 tool that specifically cleaves DNA targets and is functional for genome editing applications in prokaryotes and eukaryotic cells.

Abstract Pseudomonas aeruginosa is an opportunistic pathogen able to infect any human tissue. One of the reasons for its high adaptability and colonization of host tissues is its capacity of maintaining iron homeostasis through a wide array of iron acquisition and removal mechanisms. Due to their ability to cause life‐threatening acute and chronic infections, especially among cystic fibrosis and immunocompromised patients, and their propensity to acquire resistance to many antibiotics, the World Health Organization (WHO) has encouraged the scientific community to find new strategies to eradicate this pathogen. Several recent strategies to battle P. aeruginosa focus on targeting iron homeostasis mechanisms, turning its greatest advantage into an exploitable weak point. In this review, we discuss the different mechanisms used by P. aeruginosa to maintain iron homeostasis and the strategies being developed to fight this pathogen by blocking these mechanisms. Among others, the use of iron chelators and mimics, as well as disruption of siderophore production and uptake, have shown promising results in reducing viability and/or virulence of this pathogen. The so‐called ‘Trojan‐horse’ strategy taking advantage of the siderophore uptake systems is emerging as an efficient method to improve delivery of antibiotics into the bacterial cells. Moreover, siderophore transporters are considered promising targets for the developing of P. aeruginosa vaccines.

Abstract It is estimated that up to half of global methane (CH4) emissions are derived from microbial processes in aquatic ecosystems. However, it is not fully understood which factors explain the spatial and temporal variability of these emissions. For example, light has previously been shown to both inhibit and stimulate aerobic methane‐oxidizing bacteria (i.e., methanotrophs) in the water column. These contrasting results indicate that the mechanisms that light has on CH4 oxidation are not yet clearly known, even less so for benthic aerobic methanotrophs. Here, we tested whether light reaching the seafloor can inhibit methanotrophic activity on the sediment surface. We sampled and distributed over 40 intact sediment cores from two coastal sites (illuminated 10 m, and a dark site at 33 m water depth) into 0, 50, and 100 PAR light treatments. After 10 days, we found no difference between treatments for each site in pore‐water CH4 concentrations, relative abundance of aerobic methanotrophs, or the number of RNA transcripts related to methane oxidation. Our results suggest that light attenuation in coastal waters does not significantly affect aerobic methanotrophs in coastal sediments.

Abstract Our objective was to test whether p53 expression status is associated with survival for women diagnosed with the most common ovarian carcinoma histotypes (high‐grade serous carcinoma [HGSC], endometrioid carcinoma [EC], and clear cell carcinoma [CCC]) using a large multi‐institutional cohort from the Ovarian Tumor Tissue Analysis (OTTA) consortium. p53 expression was assessed on 6,678 cases represented on tissue microarrays from 25 participating OTTA study sites using a previously validated immunohistochemical (IHC) assay as a surrogate for the presence and functional effect of TP53 mutations. Three abnormal expression patterns (overexpression, complete absence, and cytoplasmic) and the normal (wild type) pattern were recorded. Survival analyses were performed by histotype. The frequency of abnormal p53 expression was 93.4% (4,630/4,957) in HGSC compared to 11.9% (116/973) in EC and 11.5% (86/748) in CCC. In HGSC, there were no differences in overall survival across the abnormal p53 expression patterns. However, in EC and CCC, abnormal p53 expression was associated with an increased risk of death for women diagnosed with EC in multivariate analysis compared to normal p53 as the reference (hazard ratio [HR] = 2.18, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.36–3.47, p = 0.0011) and with CCC (HR = 1.57, 95% CI 1.11–2.22, p = 0.012). Abnormal p53 was also associated with shorter overall survival in The International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics stage I/II EC and CCC. Our study provides further evidence that functional groups of TP53 mutations assessed by abnormal surrogate p53 IHC patterns are not associated with survival in HGSC. In contrast, we validate that abnormal p53 IHC is a strong independent prognostic marker for EC and demonstrate for the first time an independent prognostic association of abnormal p53 IHC with overall survival in patients with CCC.

Conclusions: Olfactory dysfunction could be a biomarker for early diagnosis of CI in T2DM. However, these alterations are highly heterogeneous and more studies that include neuroimaging need to be conducted.

Abstract Marine biodiversity consists of a complex network of organisms responsible for keeping the ecosystem's balance. Fungi are an understudied group of organisms despite their recognized importance for ecosystem processes and diversity. How fungi respond to environmental change remains poorly understood, especially in marine benthic habitats. The Baltic Sea is a brackish coastal ecosystem with steep environmental gradients in a relatively limited geographical area and is therefore a particularly good system to investigate the impact of different abiotic factors on benthic fungal diversity. This study used environmental DNA (eDNA) metabarcoding to analyze the spatial dynamics of benthic fungal diversity in the Baltic Sea and quantify the environmental drivers that shape these dynamics. Based on 59 stations spreading over 1145 km the results showed that benthic fungal communities were dominated by the phylum Chytridiomycota, and the fungal species Alphamyces chaetifer and Operculomyces laminatus from this phylum were the main drivers of the community structure dissimilarities observed between regions. Water depth and salinity were the main predictors of the benthic fungal community composition. The impact of nutrient availability was also significant, possibly related to the known role of Chytridiomycota species such as A. chaetifer and O. laminatus in nutrient cycling. Our results indicate that the benthic fungal diversity of the Baltic Sea is shaped by salinity gradients and nutrient availability and highlights that the current fungal biodiversity is at risk of species shift or decline with predicted changes in salinity due to climate change and intensified eutrophication.

Abstract Administration of neutralizing antibodies (nAbs) has proved to be effective by providing immediate protection against SARS‐CoV‐2. However, dual strategies combining virus neutralization and immune response stimulation to enhance specific cytotoxic T cell responses, such as dendritic cell (DC) cross‐priming, represent a promising field but have not yet been explored. Here, a broadly nAb, TNT, are first generated by grafting an anti‐RBD biparatopic tandem nanobody onto a trimerbody scaffold. Cryo‐EM data show that the TNT structure allows simultaneous binding to all six RBD epitopes, demonstrating a high‐avidity neutralizing interaction. Then, by C‐terminal fusion of an anti‐DNGR‐1 scFv to TNT, the bispecific trimerbody TNTDNGR‐1 is generated to target neutralized virions to type 1 conventional DCs (cDC1s) and promote T cell cross‐priming. Therapeutic administration of TNTDNGR‐1, but not TNT, protects K18‐hACE2 mice from a lethal SARS‐CoV‐2 infection, boosting virus‐specific humoral responses and CD8+ T cell responses. These results further strengthen the central role of interactions with immune cells in the virus‐neutralizing antibody activity and demonstrate the therapeutic potential of the Fc‐free strategy that can be used advantageously to provide both immediate and long‐term protection against SARS‐CoV‐2 and other viral infections.

Abstract Biodiversity conservation is a complex and transdisciplinary problem that requires engagement and cooperation among scientific, societal, economic, and political institutions. However, historical approaches have often failed to bring together and address the needs of all relevant stakeholders in decision‐making processes. The Tropical Andes, a biodiversity hotspot where conservation efforts often conflict with socioeconomic issues and policies that prioritize economic development, provides an ideal model to develop and implement more effective approaches. In this study, we present a co‐design approach that mainstreams and improves the flow of biodiversity information in the Tropical Andes, while creating tailored outputs that meet the needs of economic and societal stakeholders. We employed a consultative process that brought together biodiversity information users and producers at the local, national, and regional levels through a combination of surveys and workshops. This approach identified priority needs and limitations of the flow of biodiversity information in the region, which led to the co‐design of user‐relevant biodiversity indicators. By leveraging the existing capacities of biodiversity information users and producers, we were able to co‐design multiple biodiversity indicators and prioritize two for full implementation ensuring that the data was findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable based on the FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable) principles. This approach helped address limitations that were identified in the stakeholder engagement process, including gaps in data availability and the need for more accessible biodiversity information. Additionally, capacity‐building workshops were incorporated for all producers of biodiversity information involved, which aimed to not only improve the current flow of biodiversity information in the region but also facilitate its future sustainability. Our approach can serve as a valuable blueprint for mainstreaming biodiversity information and making it more inclusive in the future, especially considering the diverse worldviews, values, and knowledge systems between science, policy, and practice.

Abstract ATP synthases are proteins that catalyse the formation of ATP through the rotatory movement of their membrane‐spanning subunit. In mitochondria, ATP synthases are found to arrange as dimers at the high‐curved edges of cristae. Here, a direct link is explored between the rotatory movement of ATP synthases and their preference for curved membranes. An active curvature sorting of ATP synthases in lipid nanotubes pulled from giant vesicles is found. Coarse‐grained simulations confirm the curvature‐seeking behaviour of rotating ATP synthases, promoting reversible and frequent protein‐protein contacts. The formation of transient protein dimers relies on the membrane‐mediated attractive interaction of the order of 1.5 kBT produced by a hydrophobic mismatch upon protein rotation. Transient dimers are sustained by a conic‐like arrangement characterized by a wedge angle of θ ≈ 50°, producing a dynamic coupling between protein shape and membrane curvature. The results suggest a new role of the rotational movement of ATP synthases for their dynamic self‐assembly in biological membranes.

Abstract Prey often induce antipredator behaviors when balancing food acquisition against safety. The starvation–predation hypothesis (SPH) posits that, during food shortages, the risk of starvation requires prey to forego antipredator behavior to increase feeding rates. Such shifts in antipredator behavior may further increase the risk of predation and therefore kill rates by predators. We tested the SPH and its consequences for kill rates in a single large prey, single large predator system. In the Argentine Andes, we evaluated whether risk avoidance by vicuñas (Vicugna vicugna) decreased during periods of food scarcity. From three years of GPS relocations collected simultaneously from vicuñas and pumas (Puma concolor), resource selection functions revealed that vicuñas increased their exposure to pumas during nongrowing seasons by reducing the avoidance of canyons and increasing selection for meadows, both of which offer more food of higher quality than relatively safe plains. However, and despite vicuñas becoming more risk‐prone during nongrowing seasons, kill rates by pumas did not change between growing and nongrowing seasons. Contrary to evidence from mesocosm experiments, relaxation of antipredator behavior by prey did not translate into increased kill rates by predators. Our results enhance understanding of the interplay between food limitation and predator–prey interactions within ecosystems and may improve ecologists' ability to predict when and where behaviorally mediated trophic cascades are more likely to occur.

Abstract Aim To evaluate the impact of an educational intervention focused on teaching students to create infographics to improve pharmacology learning. Design This is a comparative study. Methods The population was 250 nursing students who had to create two infographics in groups related to the content that had been addressed in pharmacology in two different moments. Students and professors evaluated the infographics through a 5‐point Likert scale. Scores from the official exam of the pharmacology subject were obtained. Results Most of the students scored below 50% for the “excellent” and “good” categories. Intraclass correlation and kappa correlations among students and professors' evaluations were low. The comparison between both times of students' evaluations only yields significant correlation values for the criterion “Understanding of information” (r = .039, p = .024) and the “Visual presentation of information” (r = .041, p = .019). No correlation was obtained between the test and evaluations values of the infographic.

Abstract Aims Traditional adverse events in chronic coronary syndrome (CCS) include atherothrombotic events but usually exclude heart failure (HF). Data are scarce about how new‐onset HF modifies mortality risk. We aimed to determine the incidence of HF and compare its long‐term mortality risk with myocardial infarction (MI) and stroke in patients with known or suspected CCS. Methods We prospectively evaluated 5811 consecutive HF‐free patients submitted to vasodilator stress cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) for known or suspected CCS. Ischaemic burden and left ventricular ejection fraction were assessed by CMR. HF included outpatient diagnosis or acute HF hospitalization. The mortality risk for the incident events and their cross‐comparisons were evaluated using a Markov illness–death model with transition‐specific survival models. Results The mean age was 55 ± 11 years, and 38.9% were female. At a median follow‐up of 5.44 (IQR = 2.53–8.55) years, 591 deaths were registered (1.79 per 100 P‐Y). Abstract Introduction Stage III non‐small‐cell lung cancer (NSCLC) management is challenging given the heterogeneous nature of the disease. The LATAM subset of the real‐world, global KINDLE study reported the treatment patterns and clinical outcomes for LATAM from the pre‐immuno‐oncology era. Methods The study was conducted in seven countries (Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Dominican Republic, Mexico, Peru and Uruguay) in stage III NSCLC (American Joint Committee on Cancer, 7th edition) diagnosed between January 2013 and December 2017. Retrospective data from patients' medical records (index date to the end of follow‐up) were collected. Summary statistics, Kaplan–Meier survival estimates and a two‐sided 95% confidence interval (CI) were provided. Cox proportional hazard model was used for univariate and multi‐variate analyses. Results A total of 231 patients was enrolled, the median age was 65.0 years (range 21.0–89.0), 60.6% were males, 76.6% had smoking history, 64.0% had adenocarcinoma and 28.7% underwent curative resection. Multiple treatment regimens (>25) were used; chemotherapy alone was the most common (24.8%). The overall median progression‐free survival (mPFS) and median overall survival (mOS) were 14.8 months (95% CI, 12.1–18.6) and 48.6 months (95% CI, 34.7 to not calculable). Significantly better mPFS and mOS were observed for stage IIIA with curative surgery and resectable tumours and stage IIIB with an Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group score of 0/1, female gender, resectable tumours, adenocarcinoma and curative surgery (p

Abstract Background Because of the phenomenal success of treatment with monoclonal antibodies and antibody‐drug conjugates targeting human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2), most patients with early‐stage HER2‐positive breast cancer (HER2+ BC) and some with limited metastatic diseases have been cured, and those who have not been cured have achieved significant improvements in overall survival, which has weakened the role of the TNM staging system in the prognosis of HER2+ BC today. Given that the disease is now highly curable, treatment conception, classification, and modalities should differ from those of cancer types with a poor prognosis. It is warranted to build a new paradigm for classifying and treating HER2+ BC. Recent findings In our personal view, we suggest that the classification system should be based not only on traditional anatomy and cancer biology but also on available treatment regimens, their exceptional outcomes, and their toxicities. In this regard, we developed a new concise classification of HER2+ BC based on the TNM staging system, a review of the literature, research results, and our clinical experience, dividing the patients into four distinct groups: curable (lymph‐node negative and small (≤3 cm) early breast cancer), do our best to cure (locally advanced or tumors >3 cm early breast cancer), hope for cure (local‐regional recurrent, limited metastases, and exceptional responders), and incurable (metastatic breast cancer with poor performance status or non‐exceptional responders). Conclusion It will assist clinicians in developing an optimal treatment regimen at the outset, curing more HER2+ BC patients and improving their quality of life.

Abstract Taxane‐based chemotherapy regimens are used as first‐line treatment for breast cancer. Neurotoxicity, mainly taxane‐induced peripheral neuropathy (TIPN), remains the most important dose‐limiting adverse event. Multiple genes may be associated with TIPN; however, the strength and direction of the association remain unclear. For this reason, we systematically reviewed observational studies of TIPN pharmacogenetic markers in breast cancer treatment. We conducted a systematic search of terms alluding to breast cancer, genetic markers, taxanes, and neurotoxicity in Ovid, ProQuest, PubMed, Scopus, Virtual Health, and Web of Science. We assessed the quality of evidence and bias profile. We extracted relevant variables and effect measures. Whenever possible, we performed random‐effects gene meta‐analyses and examined interstudy heterogeneity with meta‐regression models and subgroup analyses. This study follows the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta‐Analyses (PRISMA) and STrengthening the REporting of Genetic Association Studies (STREGA) reporting guidance. A total of 42 studies with 19,431 participants were included. These evaluated 262 single‐nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) across 121 genes. We conducted meta‐analyses on 23 genes with 60 SNPs (19 studies and 6246 participants). Thirteen individual SNPs (ABCB1‐rs2032582, ABCB1‐rs3213619, BCL6/‐rs1903216, /CAND1‐rs17781082, CYP1B1‐rs1056836, CYP2C8‐rs10509681, CYP2C8‐rs11572080, EPHA5‐rs7349683, EPHA6‐rs301927, FZD3‐rs7001034, GSTP1‐rs1138272, TUBB2A‐rs9501929, and XKR4‐rs4737264) and the overall SNPs' effect in four genes (CYP3A4, EphA5, GSTP1, and SLCO1B1) were statistically significantly associated with TIPN through meta‐analysis. In conclusion, through systematic review and meta‐analysis, we found that polymorphisms, and particularly 13 SNPs, are associated with TIPN, suggesting that genetics does play a role in interindividual predisposition. Further studies could potentially use these findings to develop individual risk profiles and guide decision making.

DNA damage induces the activation of many different signals associated with repair or cell death, but it is also connected with physiological events, such as adult neurogenesis and B‐cell differentiation. DNA damage induces different signaling pathways, some of them linked to important metabolic changes. The mTORC1 pathway has a central role in the regulation of growth processes and cell division in response to environmental changes and also controls protein synthesis, lipid biogenesis, nucleotide synthesis, and expression of glycolytic genes. Here, we report that double‐strand breaks induced with etoposide affect the expression of genes encoding different enzymes associated with specific metabolic pathways in Ramos cells. We also analyzed the role of mTOR signaling, demonstrating that double‐strand breaks induce downregulation of mTOR signaling. Specific inhibition of mTORC1 using rapamycin also induced changes in the expression of metabolic genes. Finally, we demonstrated that DNA damage and rapamycin can regulate glucose uptake. In summary, our findings show that etoposide and rapamycin affect the expression of metabolic genes as well as apoptotic and proliferation markers in Ramos cells, increasing our understanding of cancer metabolism.

Abstract Future precipitation changes are typically estimated from climate model simulations, while the credibility of such projections needs to be assessed by their ability to capture observed precipitation changes. Here we evaluate how skillfully historical climate simulations contributing to the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6) capture observed changes in mean and extreme precipitation. We find that CMIP6 historical simulations skillfully represent observed precipitation changes over large parts of Europe, Asia, northeastern North America, parts of South America and western Australia, whereas a lack of skill is apparent in western North America and parts of Africa. In particular in regions with moderate skill the availability of very large ensembles can be beneficial to improve the simulation accuracy. CMIP6 simulations are regionally skillful where they capture observed (positive or negative) trends, whereas a lack of skill is found in regions characterized by negative observed precipitation trends where CMIP6 simulates increases.

Abstract Cell proteostasis includes gene transcription, protein translation, folding of de novo proteins, post‐translational modifications, secretion, degradation and recycling. By profiling the proteome of extracellular vesicles (EVs) from T cells, we have found the chaperonin complex CCT, involved in the correct folding of particular proteins. By limiting CCT cell‐content by siRNA, cells undergo altered lipid composition and metabolic rewiring towards a lipid‐dependent metabolism, with increased activity of peroxisomes and mitochondria. This is due to dysregulation of the dynamics of interorganelle contacts between lipid droplets, mitochondria, peroxisomes and the endolysosomal system. This process accelerates the biogenesis of multivesicular bodies leading to higher EV production through the dynamic regulation of microtubule‐based kinesin motors. These findings connect proteostasis with lipid metabolism through an unexpected role of CCT.

Resistive memories are outstanding electron devices that have displayed a large potential in a plethora of applications such as nonvolatile data storage, neuromorphic computing, hardware cryptography, etc. Their fabrication control and performance have been notably improved in the last few years to cope with the requirements of massive industrial production. However, the most important hurdle to progress in their development is the so‐called cycle‐to‐cycle variability, which is inherently rooted in the resistive switching mechanism behind the operational principle of these devices. In order to achieve the whole picture, variability must be assessed from different viewpoints going from the experimental characterization to the adequation of modeling and simulation techniques. Herein, special emphasis is put on the modeling part because the accurate representation of the phenomenon is critical for circuit designers. In this respect, a number of approaches are used to the date: stochastic, behavioral, mesoscopic..., each of them covering particular aspects of the electron and ion transport mechanisms occurring within the switching material. These subjects are dealt with in this review, with the aim of presenting the most recent advancements in the treatment of variability in resistive memories.

Abstract The confusion matrix has long been adopted as the ‘de facto’ and ‘de jure’ standard method of reporting on the thematic accuracy assessment of any land surface geospatial dataset. This type of data supports decision‐making in many different fields, so suitable quality is therefore essential in order to take the best decisions. Nevertheless, the creation and exploitation of the confusion matrix remains as an open topic with issues related to sampling design, quantitative indices derived from the matrix, statistical hypotheses that could be applied, etc. In connection with the latter, a confusion matrix dataset would be useful for a researcher in this matter. We have developed such a dataset retrieving confusion matrices from the literature, mainly research articles published in scientific journals included in WoS. We have collected almost 200 matrices in a database. This allows us to access the complete matrices and query different interesting properties of them and of the project where they were developed such as matrix size, sample size, location, year of data capture, labels of the classes, quality indices used, and extension and location of the project (where available).

Societal Impact Statement Globally, cities are planning for resilience through urban greening initiatives as governments understand the importance of urban forests in improving quality of life and mitigating climate change. However, the persistence of urban forests and the ecosystem benefits they provide are threatened by climate change, and systematic assessments of causes of tree dieback and mortality in urban environments are rare. Long‐term monitoring studies and adaptive management are needed to identify and prevent climate change‐driven failures and mortality. Research and monitoring when coupled with systematic forecasting will enable governments to incorporate climate change resilience into urban forestry planning. Future scenarios in which urban forests are resilient or in decline will depend on the management and planning actions we make today. Summary The management of urban forests is a key element of resilience planning in cities across the globe. Urban forests provide ecosystem services as well as other nature‐based solutions to 4.2 billion people living in cities. However, to continue to do so effectively, urban forests need to be able to thrive in an increasingly changing climate. Trees in cities are vulnerable to extreme heat and drought events, which are predicted to increase in frequency and severity under climate change. Knowledge of species' vulnerability to climate change, therefore, is crucial to ensure provision of desired ecosystem benefits, improve species selection, maintain tree growth and reduce tree mortality, dieback and stress in urban forests. Yet, systematic assessments of causes of tree dieback and mortality in urban environments are rare. We reviewed the state of knowledge of tree mortality in urban forests globally, finding very few frameworks that enable detection of climate change impacts on urban forests and no long‐term studies assessing climate change as a direct driver of urban tree dieback and mortality. The effects of climate change on urban forests remain poorly understood and quantified, constraining the ability of governments to incorporate climate change resilience into urban forestry planning.

Abstract Background It has not been determined whether ileal appearance differs among dogs with chronic inflammatory enteropathy (CIE) and different serum concentrations of cobalamin. Objective To compare endoscopic and histologic ileal findings in dogs with CIE and different serum cobalamin concentrations and then evaluate the correlation of ileal changes to cobalamin serum concentration using updated scoring systems to assess the ileum. Animals Sixty‐eight dogs with CIE. Methods Retrospective study. Frequency of ileal features and ileal histologic and endoscopic scores (IHS and IES) were obtained and compared among CIE dogs with severe hypocobalaminemia (SHC; 350 ng/L). The correlation of IHS and IES with cobalamin was evaluated. Results Friability, villus atrophy, crypt dilatation, epithelial injury, and intraepithelial lymphocytes were more frequent in SHC than in NC dogs (all P ≤ .01). Median SHC‐IES (2; range, 0‐4) was higher than NC‐IES (1; range, 0‐5; P = .004). Median SHC‐IHS (6; range, 3‐9) was higher than HC‐IHS (4; range, 1‐7; P 350 ng/L in CIE dogs. With updated scales to assess the mucosa, greater ileal damage was associated with lower serum cobalamin concentration.

Abstract Small rodents are prevalent and functionally important across the world's biomes, making their monitoring salient for ecosystem management, conservation, forestry, and agriculture. There is a growing need for cost‐effective and noninvasive methods for large‐scale, intensive sampling. Fecal pellet counts readily provide relative abundance indices, and given suitable analytical methods, feces could also allow for the determination of multiple ecological and physiological variables, including community composition. In this context, we developed calibration models for rodent taxonomic determination using fecal near‐infrared reflectance spectroscopy (fNIRS). Our results demonstrate fNIRS as an accurate and robust method for predicting genus and species identity of five coexisting subarctic microtine rodent species. We show that sample exposure to weathering increases the method's accuracy, indicating its suitability for samples collected from the field. Diet was not a major determinant of species prediction accuracy in our samples, as diet exhibited large variation and overlap between species. fNIRS could also be applied across regions, as calibration models including samples from two regions provided a good prediction accuracy for both regions. We show fNIRS as a fast and cost‐efficient high‐throughput method for rodent taxonomic determination, with the potential for cross‐regional calibrations and the use on field‐collected samples. Importantly, appeal lies in the versatility of fNIRS. In addition to rodent population censuses, fNIRS can provide information on demography, fecal nutrients, stress hormones, and even disease. Given the development of such calibration models, fNIRS analytics could complement novel genetic methods and greatly support ecosystem‐ and interaction‐based approaches to monitoring.
