Based on the size- and shape-selective sorption, 13X molecular sieves were developed as solid-phase extraction adsorbents to cleanup serum extract for the determination of polybrominated diphenyl ethers. The important parameters affecting the cleanup efficiency were investigated including the amount of sorbents, the type, and volume of solvents. Under the optimized conditions, the capacity for removing impurities was evaluated via gel permeation chromatography and gas chromatography with mass spectrometry. The results demonstrated that up to 99% of lipids in corn oil (13 mg) can be removed after cleanup, and endogenous compounds in serum can also be effectively eliminated. The cleanup efficiency is not only superior to hydrophile-lipophile balance column, but also close to acid silica gel and multifunction impurity sorbents. Generally, the developed cleanup method exhibited higher recovery for polybrominated diphenyl ethers with more than four bromines, especially for nona- and deca-brominated diphenyl ethers (99.1-117.8%). The cleanup method can be coupled with gas chromatography and tandem mass spectrometry for polybrominated diphenyl ethers analysis in human serum. The method detection limits were 0.01-0.27 ng/mL and average recovery was 50.9-113.3%, except 2,3',4',6-tetrabrominated, 2,3',4,4',6-pentabrominated, and 2,3,3',4,4',5',6-heptabrominated diphenyl ethers. 2,2',4,5'-Tetrabrominated diphenyl ethers had the highest detection frequency (95%) in human serum, whereas decabrominated diphenyl ethers had the maximum mean concentration (0.50 ng/mL).

To further identify the real efficacy and safety of dexmedetomidine as an adjuvant to local wound infiltration anaesthesia, we conducted this meta‐analysis. The systematic search strategy was performed using PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, and Chinese databases. As a result, a total of 23 RCTs (1445 patients) were included. Patients receiving dexmedetomidine combined with local anaesthetics had a lower rescue analgesia rate [risk ratio (RR): 0.48; 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.36‐0.65] and lower rescue analgesic consumption [weighted mean difference (WMD): −10.80 mg; 95%CI: −13.28 to −8.31 mg] than patients receiving local anaesthetics alone. The dexmedetomidine‐related adverse reactions included bradycardia (RR: 1.33; 95%CI: 0.32‐5.56) and hypotension (RR: 3.00; 95%CI: 0.49‐18.42). In addition, the time to first analgesic request (WMD: 296.16 minutes; 95%CI: 165.69 minutes ~ 426.63 minutes), incidence of postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) and pain scores at 4 hours postoperatively were also significantly lower in patients receiving dexmedetomidine combined with local anaesthetics. This meta‐analysis demonstrated that the use of dexmedetomidine as an adjuvant to wound infiltration is effective for reducing the rescue analgesia rate, rescue analgesic consumption and PONV. In addition, limited evidence shows that dexmedetomidine can prolong postoperative analgesia for approximately 5 hours. Further investigations on dexmedetomidine‐related adverse reactions and the dose–response effect of dexmedetomidine in wound infiltration are warranted.

Tea is the one of the most popular non-alcoholic caffeinated beverages in the world. Tea is produced from the tea plant (Camellia sinensis (L.) O. Kuntze), which is known to accumulate fluoride. This article systematically analyzes the literature concerning fluoride absorption, transportation and fluoride tolerance mechanisms in tea plants. Fluoride bioavailability and exposure levels in tea infusions are also reviewed. The circulation of fluoride within the tea plantation ecosystems is in a positive equilibrium, with greater amounts of fluoride introduced to tea orchards than removed. Water extractable fluoride and magnesium chloride (MgCl2 ) extractable fluoride in plantation soil are the main sources of absorption by tea plant root via active trans-membrane transport and anion channels. Most fluoride is readily transported through the xylem as F- /F-Al complexes to leaf cell walls and vacuole. The findings indicate that tea plants employ cell wall accumulation, vacuole compartmentalization, and F-Al complexes to co-detoxify fluoride and aluminum, a possible tolerance mechanism through which tea tolerates higher levels of fluoride than most plants. Furthermore, dietary and endogenous factors influence fluoride bioavailability and should be considered when exposure levels of fluoride in commercially available dried tea leaves are interpreted. The relevant current challenges and future perspectives are also discussed. © 2020 Society of Chemical Industry.

Two‐dimensional (2D) materials are highly sensitive to substrates, interfaces, and the surrounding environments. Suspended 2D materials are free from substrate‐induced effects, thus an ideal approach to study their intrinsic properties. However, it is very challenging to prepare large‐area suspended 2D materials with high efficiency. Here we report a universal method, based on pretreatments of densely patterned hole array substrates with either oxygen‐plasma or gold film deposition, to prepare large‐area suspended mono‐ and few‐layer 2D materials. Multiple structural, optical, and electrical characterization tools were used to fully evaluate the improved performance of various suspended 2D layers. Some of these observations reported in this study are: (1) Observation of a new Raman low frequency mode for the suspended MoS2; (2) Significantly stronger photoluminescence (PL) and second harmonic generation (SHG) signals of suspended WSe2, which enables the study of new optical transition processes; (3) The low energy electron diffraction pattern on suspended MoS2 also exhibits much sharper spots than that on the supported area; and (4) The mobility of suspended graphene device approaches 300 000 cm2 V−1 s−1, which is desirable to explore the intrinsic properties of graphene. This work provides an innovative and efficient route for fabricating suspended 2D materials, and we expect that it can be broadly used for studying intrinsic properties of 2D materials and in applications of hybrid active nanophotonic and electronic devices.

It has been reported that miR-623 is deregulated in lung adenocarcinoma and inhibits tumor growth and invasion. However, it is unclear whether miR-623 has a role in the progression of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Herein, we found that miR-623 was significantly downregulated in HCC, and that its expression was related to poor clinical outcomes of patients with HCC. Upregulation of miR-623 decreased cell proliferation, viability, migration, and invasion and further promoted apoptosis in 7721, Huh7, and Bel-7402 cells. Moreover, we also observed that miR-623 regulated the phosphoinositide 3-kinase/protein kinase B (PI3K/Akt), Wnt/β-catenin, and extracellular regulated protein kinases/c-Jun N-terminal kinase (ERK/JNK) signaling pathways as well as the expression level of related proteins. Further, X-ray repair cross complementing 5 (XRCC5) was a direct target for miR-623, and the suppression of PI3K/Akt, Wnt/β-catenin, and ERK/JNK signaling pathways and cell proliferation and invasion abilities caused by miR-623 in HCC cells was significantly reversed by the upregulation of XRCC5. Collectively, our data suggested that miR-623 suppressed the progression of HCC by regulating the PI3K/Akt, Wnt/β-catenin, and ERK/JNK pathways by targeting XRCC5 in HCC in vitro, indicating that miR-623 may be a target for the therapy of HCC.

Developing dynamic and highly sensitive methods for imaging M2-type tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) is vital for monitoring the tumor progression and assessing the therapeutic efficacy. Here, the fabrication and application of rationally designed Er-based rare-earth nanoprobes for the targeted imaging of M2-type TAMs in glioblastoma (GBM) through the second near-infrared (NIR-II) fluorescence beyond 1500 nm is reported. Oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is an obstacle to the electrocatalytic water splitting due to its unique four-proton-and-electron-transfer reaction process. Many methods, such as engineering heterostructure and introducing oxygen vacancy, have been used to improve the catalytic performance of electrocatalysts for OER. Herein, the above two kinds of regulation are simultaneously realized in a catalyst by using unique ion irradiation technology. A nanosheet structured NiO/NiFe2 O4 heterostructure with rich oxygen vacancies converted from nickel-iron layered double hydroxides by Ar+ ions irradiation shows significant enhancement in both OER and hydrogen evolution reaction performance. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the construction of NiO/NiFe2 O4 can optimize the free energy of O* to OOH* process during OER reaction. The oxygen vacancy-rich NiO/NiFe2 O4 nanosheets have an overpotential of 279 mV at 10 mA cm-2 and a low Tafel slope of 42 mV dec-1 . Moreover, this NiO/NiFe2 O4 electrode shows an excellent long-term stability at 100 mA cm-2 for 450 h. The synergetic effects between NiO and NiFe2 O4 make NiO/NiFe2 O4 heterostructure have high conductivity and fast charge transfer, abundant active sites, and high catalytic reactivity, contributing to its excellent performance.

Nano-topographic surfaces have been used as an effective tool to control cell behavior such as adhesion and proliferation. In this study, multilayer films with nano-topographic features were fabricated by alternatively assembling poly(l-lysine) (PLL) and poly(dopamine)-coated carbon nanotubes (CNTs@PDA) layers. The growth of PLL/CNTs@PDA film presented a perfect linear relationship with the number of bilayers. A nanostructured morphology with interpenetrating CNT networks was observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Adhesion and proliferation of endothelial cells (ECs) and smooth muscle cells (SMCs) on the PLL/CNTs@PDA multilayer films have been evaluated. The films support initial adhesion of both ECs and SMCs. Interestingly, the PLL/CNTs@PDA multilayer films were found to promote proliferation of SMCs and inhibited proliferation of ECs. Further, pheochromocytoma (PC12) cells were employed to evaluate the influence of PLL/CNTs@PDA multilayer films on the outgrowth of synapses. We found that the nanostructured surface significantly promoted the synapses of PC12 cell growth and formation. Our findings suggest that cytophilic surfaces with the nanostructured morphology have diverse effects on different cells, which sheds light on new design of biomaterial surfaces in cell-based applications.

The 2D layered materials are promising candidates for broadband, low-cost photodetectors. One deficiency of 2D materials is the relatively low absorbance of light, limiting the applications of the 2D photodetectors. Doping of plasmonic nanoparticles into 2D materials may enhance the optical absorbance owing to the localized surface plasmonic resonance (LSPR) effect; however, considerable defects may be introduced into the 2D materials at the same time, resulting in certain degradation of device performance. Here, a novel design of 2D photodetectors with enhanced photoresponsivity by non-contact plasmonic nanoparticles (NPs) is proposed, consisting of a hybrid structure of few-layer SnSe2 transferred a fused silica (SiO2 ) plate with embedded Ag NPs. The system of Ag NPs-in-SiO2 shows strong LSPR effect with significantly enhanced optical absorption, acting on SnSe2 in a non-contact configuration. Benefiting from well-preserved intrinsic features of SnSe2 and LSPR effect, the responsivity of the photodetector is enhanced by 881 times with the bias voltage of 0.1 V, which is superior to previously reported results of plasmon-enhanced 2D photodetectors. Moreover, the SiO2 with embedded Ag NPs is recyclable and can be easy to be recombined with different 2D materials. This work offers additional strategy for development of efficient, low-cost 2D photodetectors by using plasmonic NPs.

As the major pipeline for transporting oxygen and nutrients to living tissues, well‐ordered and functional vasculature is vital to maintain the function of organisms. The cerebrovascular disorders induced by acute or chronic diseases, including traumatic brain injury (TBI), stroke, and brain tumors, could cause vascular cognitive impairment and even mortality. Due to the complication of these cerebrovascular diseases, early diagnosis and monitoring their pathological processes in real time in animal models could enlighten us with insights into early prevention and effective treatment. Over the last decade, the NIR‐II fluorescence imaging technology has been well developed in both nanofluorophores and imaging systems. For cerebrovascular disorders, the collaborative use of wide‐field imaging setup with NIR‐II nanoprobes enable arteriovenous staging, and calculation of blood flow velocity to distinguish ischemic area in TBI and stroke. The changes in molecular and cellular levels of TBI provide the guidance on the design of targeted and activatable NIR‐II nanoprobes for evaluating and monitoring the microenvironment variations. For the brain tumors, both targeted strategy and focus ultrasound sonication are efficient approaches for overcoming the blood‐brain‐barrier and brain‐tumor‐barrier for delivery of nanoprobes. Therefore, NIR‐II fluorescence imaging‐guided surgical navigation of brain tumors and resected lesions biopsy intraoperatively ensure the accuracy of surgery based on the precise definition of tumor margins. This review summarizes the recent advances in NIR‐II fluorescence imaging technology, which is mainly inclusive of well‐developed NIR‐II nanofluorophores and their applications in cerebrovascular diseases with address of its challenges and great potential in these aspects.

The controllable synthesis of uniform tungsten diselenide (WSe2 ) is crucial for its emerging applications due to the high sensitivity of its extraordinary physicochemical properties to its layer numbers. However, undesirable multilayer regions inevitably form during the fabrication of WSe2 via the traditional chemical vapor deposition process resulted from the lack of significantly energetically favorable competition between layer accumulation and size expansion. This work innovatively introduces Cu to occupy the hexagonal site positioned at the center of the six membered ring of the WSe2 surface, thus filtrates the undesired reaction path through precisely thermodynamical control and achieves self-limited growth WSe2 crystals. The as-obtained WSe2 crystals are characterized as strictly single-layer over the entire wafer. Furthermore, the strictly self-limited growth behavior can achieve the "win-win" cooperation with the synthesis efficiency. The fastest growth (≈15 times of the growth rate in the previous work) of strictly monolayer WSe2 crystals thus far is realized due to the high-efficiency simultaneous selenization process. The as-proposed ultrafast Cu-assisted self-limited growth method opens a new avenue to fabricate strictly monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides crystals and further promotes their practical applications in the future industrial applications.

Surface modification of nonlinear optical materials (NOMs) is widely applied to fabricate diverse photonic devices, such as frequency combs, modulators, and all-optical switches. In this work, a double-layer nanostructure with heterogeneous nanoparticles (NPs) is proposed to achieve enhanced third-order optical nonlinearity of NOMs. The mechanism of modified optical nonlinearity is elucidated to be the scattering-induced energy transfer between adjacent NPs layers. Based on the LiNbO3 platform, as a typical example, double layers of embedded Cu and Ag NPs are synthesized by sequential ion implantation, demonstrating twofold magnitude of near-infrared enhancement factor and modulation depth in comparison with a single layer of Cu NPs. With the elastic collision model and thermolysis theory being considered, the shift of the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) peak reveals the formation mechanism of the double-layer nanostructure. Utilizing the enhanced optical nonlinearity of LiNbO3 as modulators, a Q-switched mode-locked waveguide laser at 1 µm is achieved with shorter pulse duration. It suggests potential applications to improve the performance of nonlinear photonic devices by using double-layer metallic nanostructures.
