Flight is a key feature in the evolution of birds. Wing anatomy reflects many aspects of avian biology such as flight ability. However, our knowledge of the flight musculature has many gaps still, particularly for the distal wing. Therefore, the aim of this work was to investigate the form-function relationship of the forelimb myology of birds to understand the role of individual muscles during flight. Dissections of six species of birds of prey were performed to collect numerical data of muscle architecture, which is the primary determinant of muscle function and force-generation capacity. Birds of prey are a highly diverse group that presents different flight styles throughout the taxa, making them a good model for our purposes. Wing muscle mass (MM) isometrically scaled with body mass1.035 , muscle length to MM0.343 , and fascicle length (FL) scaled allometrically to MM0.285 . The shoulder musculature scaled differently than the other regions where the FL increases more slowly than would be expected in geometrically similar animals, which affects flight mechanics. A proximal-to-distal reduction of MM occurs, which helps to minimize the wing moment of inertia during flight while allowing precise control of the distal wing. Interestingly, the distribution of MM appeared to be species-specific, suggesting a functional signal. This study provides numerical information of muscle architecture of the avian wing that helps us to understand muscle function and its implication in flight, and can be used in future studies of flight mechanics. Most extant species are in clades with poor fossil records, and recent studies of comparative methods show they have low power to infer even highly simplified models of trait evolution without fossil data. Birds are a well-studied radiation, yet their early evolutionary patterns are still contentious. The fossil record suggests that birds underwent a rapid ecological radiation after the end-Cretaceous mass extinction, and several smaller, subsequent radiations. This hypothesized series of repeated radiations from fossil data is difficult to test using extant data alone. By uniting morphological and phylogenetic data on 604 extant genera of birds with morphological data on 58 species of extinct birds from 50 million years ago, the "halfway point" of avian evolution, I have been able to test how well extant-only methods predict the diversity of fossil forms. All extant-only methods underestimate the disparity, although the ratio of within- to between-clade disparity does suggest high early rates. The failure of standard models to predict high early disparity suggests that recent radiations are obscuring deep time patterns in the evolution of birds. Metrics from different models can be used in conjunction to provide more valuable insights than simply finding the model with the highest relative fit.

Sapeornithidae is a basal pygostylian family of Early Cretaceous primitive birds, in which only one genus and species, Sapeornis chaoyangensis, was reported before. This paper deals with a new genus and species of this family, Didactylornis jii gen. et sp. nov., which was unearthed from the Early Cretaceous Jiufotang Formation in western Liaoning. According to our phylogenetic analyses, both Didactylornis gen. nov. and Sapeornis form a sister group, which is basal to the clade formed by Confuciusornis and all the more derived birds, and more closely related to the short-tailed pygostylian birds than to the long-tailed avialian birds. The early history of pygostylian birds is poorly documented except for the studies of Confuciusornis and Sapeornis. The discovery of Didactylornis jii gen. et sp. nov. adds the new material for the study on the early evolution of birds.

We report herein that a pentadactyl developmental pattern is evident in early wing morphogenesis of Gallus (chicken) and Struthio (ostrich). Five avascular zones (spatially predestined locations of contiguous metacarpal and phalangeal aggregation) and four interdigital vascular spaces are established by the regression patterns of autopodial vasculature. Transient vestiges of the first and fifth metacarpals are confirmed histologically and histochemically. They lie within the preaxial- most and postaxial-most avascular zones, respectively. These observations reveal conservative patterning of the avian hand and corroborate a II-III-IV metacarpal interpretation, argue for II-III- IV identity of ossified digits in birds, and favour a simple reduction rather than a homeotic shift in terms of the phenotype expressed by Hox genes in the phylogeny of the avian manus. We suggest that gradual, bilateral reduction of phalanges and metacarpals, via apoptosis mediated by BMP, occurred during the evolution of birds (Pyramid Reduction Hypothesis). This is congruent with the establishment of a central wing axis that became co-opted for coordinated movements. On the basis of evidence presented here, the direct avian ancestor is predicted to have been five-fingered with dominant digits (þ metacarpals) as follow: II, III, IV. J. Exp. Zool. (Mol. Dev. Interpretation of the three avian digits surviv- ing postembryonic development in most recent birds has resulted in two competing hypotheses dating back to the 1820's and 1830'sF Meckel's unilateral (1821) and Owen's bilateral (1868) reduction patterns of the wing autopodium. To attempt to elucidate the I-II-III (Meckel, 1821) / II- III-IV (Owen, 1868) digital controversy, pertinent developmental data are considered here in order to test whether the three digits of Archaeopteryx and its avian relatives are derivable through the dromaeosaurid tridactyl hand (Ostrom, '69), and hence the first, second, and third digit (DI(2)- DII(3)-DIII(4)-DIV(5-0)-DV(3-0)) of a hy- pothetical primitive archosaur (Romer, '55; see also Shubin, '94), or directly from a nondinosaur archosaur via a sequence demanding gradual reduction of the preaxial and postaxial phalanges (DI(2-0)-DII(3-2)-DIII(4-3)-DIV(5-4)-DV

Birds, especially those on islands, have contributed disproportionately to the development of theories that explain the origin and maintenance of organic diversity. This essay surveys the major ideas of how bird species are thought to evolve, speciate and multiply in adaptive radiations on islands. I begin with the nineteenth century view that speciation is the result of natural selection slowly causing divergence of geographically separated populations. I then trace the course of discovery and deeper understanding during the twentieth century, from the influence of Mendelian genetics at the beginning to the modern, molecular era at the end. The dominant and pivotal evolutionary question has been how new species are formed. An initial, nearly exclusive, attention to adaptive processes has been replaced by a search for additional reasons for allopatric divergence, coupled with the conditions that permit coexistence in sympatry after allopatric divergence has occurred. Recent studies have shown that pre-mating barriers to gene exchange caused by natural selection and sexual selection often arise before post-mating genetic incompatibilities have evolved. Therefore behavioural and ecological factors play a predominant role in this stage of speciation. Imprinting and imprinting-like processes of early learning contribute to pre-mating barriers by constraining mate choice. Ecological factors determine coexistence potential and the fates of hybrids. Genetical factors at all stages, from the founding of a new population to the evolution of genetic incompatibilities, are still poorly known. But molecular genetics is now helping us to reconstruct evolutionary history, thereby transforming ideas about systematic relationships, colonization routes and both the tempo and mode of evolution. As patterns of evolution within radiations become better known, more attention needs to be given to the task of explaining the sequential build-up of avian communities; by evolutionary radiation and additional immigration, offset to some extent by extinction. The new and substantial challenge is to understand evolutionary radiations in relation to changing environments. Until that challenge is met we cannot claim that the problem of explaining adaptive radiations of birds or any other group of organisms is solved.

Birds evolved from and are phylogenetically recognized as members of the theropod dinosaurs; their first known member is the Late Jurassic Archaeopteryx, now represented by seven skeletons and a feather, and their closest known non-avian relatives are the dromaeosaurid theropods such as Deinonychus. Bird flight is widely thought to have evolved from the trees down, but Archaeopteryx and its outgroups show no obvious arboreal or tree-climbing characters, and its wing planform and wing loading do not resemble those of gliders. The ancestors of birds were bipedal, terrestrial, agile, cursorial and carnivorous or omnivorous. Apart from a perching foot and some skeletal fusions, a great many characters that are usually considered ‘avian’ (e.g. the furcula, the elongated forearm, the laterally flexing wrist and apparently feathers) evolved in non-avian theropods for reasons unrelated to birds or to flight. Soon after Archaeopteryx, avian features such as the pygostyle, fusion of the carpometacarpus, and elongated curved pedal claws with a reversed, fully descended and opposable hallux, indicate improved flying ability and arboreal habits. In the further evolution of birds, characters related to the flight apparatus phylogenetically preceded those related to the rest of the skeleton and skull. Mesozoic birds are more diverse and numerous than thought previously and the most diverse known group of Cretaceous birds, the Enantiornithes, was not even recognized until 1981. The vast majority of Mesozoic bird groups have no Tertiary records: Enantiornithes, Hesperornithiformes, Ichthyornithiformes and several other lineages disappeared by the end of the Cretaceous. By that time, a few Linnean ‘Orders’ of extant birds had appeared, but none of these taxa belongs to extant ‘families’, and it is not until the Paleocene or (in most cases) the Eocene that the majority of extant bird ‘Orders’ are known in the fossil record. There is no evidence for a major or mass extinction of birds at the end of the Cretaceous, nor for a sudden ‘bottleneck’ in diversity that fostered the early Tertiary origination of living bird ‘Orders’.

The Ratites (ostriches, emus, etc.) are thought to be neotenous descendants of flying birds, rather than primitive birds, even though they became a separate group early in the evolution of birds. This is because of the juvenile, rather than primitive, condition of the palate, skull-sutures and feathers. We report here that European starlings (Sturnus vulgaris) thyroidectomized soon after hatching also show neoteny, retaining many juvenile features (general morphology, palate, skull-sutures, feathers, behaviour), while at the same time becoming sexually mature. The juvenile characters were similar to those found in Ratites, suggesting that hypothyroidism may have been a factor in the evolution of the Ratites.

Living Dinosaurs offers a snapshot of our current understanding of the origin and evolution of birds. After slumbering for more than a century, avian palaeontology has been awakened by startling new discoveries on almost every continent. Controversies about whether dinosaurs had real feathers or whether birds were related to dinosaurs have been swept away and replaced by new and more difficult questions: How old is the avian lineage? How did birds learn to fly? Which birds survived the great extinction that ended the Mesozoic Era and how did the avian genome evolve? Answers to these questions may help us understand how the different kinds of living birds are related to one another and how they evolved into their current niches. More importantly, they may help us understand what we need to do to help them survive the dramatic impacts of human activity on the planet.
