Background Mosquitoes are hematophagous insects of major public health concern, serving as vectors of many diseases. Available products for personal protection against mosquitoes lack adequate efficacy and in most cases need to be reapplied or replaced frequently. In recent years, the encapsulation of the active repellents in various matrices has arisen as an alternative method for the development of new-generation repellent systems. The aim of the present study was to explore the potential of functional micro/nanofibrous matrices as systems for the sustained release of the highly volatile insect-repellent citronella oil. Results Micro/nanofibrous single- and triple-layer systems incorporating citronella oil as the active agent were developed via the electrospinning technique using the low-cost, non-toxic, biodegradable polymers cellulose acetate and polyvinylpyrrolidone. All the micro/nanofiber systems produced exhibited prolonged release of citronella oil and a high repellent activity in laboratory bioassays against the mosquito Aedes albopictus for at least 4 weeks. Conclusion Considering the high volatility of the embedded repellent, the present study demonstrates the strong potential of the micro/nanofibrous matrices to act as carriers of highly volatile repellents for an effective and sustained protection from mosquitoes. © 2019 Society of Chemical Industry.

Introduction The bioactive metabolites derived from weeds have attracted the interest of the food and pharmaceutical industries due to their health benefits. Objective To evaluate the anti-oxidant and acetylcholinesterase activity of Dittrichia viscosa extracts and characterise the polyphenolic metabolites using the LC coupled with diode-array detection (DAD) and positive mode electrospray ionisation (ESI) MS method with a view to evaluating the exploitation potential of this invasive weed. Materials and methods Roots and aerial parts of D. viscosa were extracted with solvents of increasing polarity and their major polyphenolic metabolites were identified by LC − DAD/ESI(+)/MS. The total phenolic content of the extracts was determined using the Folin–Ciocalteu method, while their anti-oxidant activity was evaluated on the basis of their ability to scavenge the stable free radical 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and hydrogen peroxide. Thin-layer chromatography was used to screen for acetylcholinesterase inhibitors. Results Stem extracts gave the highest phenolic content, whereas the roots showed the lowest content. Twenty-five polyphenolic constituents of the extracts were tentatively characterised according to their MS and UV spectroscopic data. Among the extracts studied, roots–ethyl acetate and flowers–diethyl ether revealed the highest activity according to the DPPH and chemiluminescence assays respectively. Conclusion The metabolic profile of D. viscosa was studied and the structures of the major polyphenolic metabolites were tentatively assigned based on their MS and UV–vis spectra. The extracts exhibited high levels of anti-oxidant and acetylcholinesterase inhibitory activity and the inhibitors are probably localised mainly in flowers and roots. Twenty one sesquiterpenes were isolated from the organic extract of the Caribbean gorgonian Pseudopterogogia rigida. Among them, seven bisabolanes (1, 2, 9–11, 13 and 14), six cadinanes (15–20) and one sesquiterpene featuring a new tricyclic carbon skeleton (21) are new natural products, while two (6 and 7) are reported for the first time from a natural source. The structures of the new compounds were established by detailed analyses of their NMR and MS data. The isolated metabolites were evaluated for their inhibitory activity against CDC25 phosphatases, which represent possible targets related to cancer therapy. Compounds 4 and 18 were the most active with IC50 values of 1.88 and 3.44 μM, respectively, against the CDC25A isoform.

Thirteen new minor diterpenes featuring the dolabellane skeleton (1-13) were isolated from the organic extracts of the brown alga Dilophus spiralis, collected in Elafonissos Island. The structures and relative configurations of the isolated natural products were elucidated on the basis of extensive analyses of their spectroscopic data (NMR, MS, IR). The absolute configuration of 1 was determined by using the modified Mosher's method, whereas the structure of 2 was confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The antibacterial activities of metabolites 1-9 and 13 were evaluated against six strains of Staphylococcus aureus, including multidrug- and methicillin-resistant variants. Compounds 1 and 4 exhibited noteworthy levels of activity with MIC values in the range of 2-8 μg/mL.

Objective To perform an assessment of the chemical composition and exploitation potential of the invasive weed Oxalis pes-caprae. Methodology Aerial parts of the invasive weed O. pes-caprae were extracted with solvents of increasing polarity and their major polyphenolic metabolites were identified by LC-DAD-MS (ESI+). The total phenolic content of the extracts was determined using the Folin–Ciocalteu method, while their anti-oxidant activity was evaluated on the basis of their ability to scavenge the stable free radical 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl and hydrogen peroxide. Results The major polyphenolic constituents of the extracts were tentatively characterised as chlorogenic acid, quinic ferulate, luteolin glucoside and cernuoside according to their MS and UV spectroscopic data. Cernuoside, an aureusidin glucoside, was isolated from the methanolic extract of the weed's flowers and its structure was unambiguously identified by 1D- and 2D-NMR spectroscopy. The butanol extract of O. pes-caprae displayed the highest anti-oxidant activity. Conclusion The metabolic profile of O. pes-caprae was studied and the structures of the major polyphenolic metabolites based on their MS and UV–vis spectra were tentatively assigned. The aureusidin glucoside cernuoside was isolated and characterised for the first time from O. pes-caprae. The extracts exhibited high levels of anti-oxidant activity. Novel fibrous biocomposites comprising ulvan, a sulfated polysaccharide extracted from the green seaweed Ulva rigida, and either polycaprolactone or polyethylene oxide were successfully prepared using the electrospinning technique. The morphology and the chemical composition of the nanofibers were characterized using SEM and FT-IR analyses. Ulvan was found to incorporate well with the co-electrospun biocompatible polymers, conferring on the collective properties of these materials. Such nanofibrous matrices represent potentially useful materials in the biomedical sector as tissue engineering scaffolds, wound dressings, or drug delivery systems. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Dendritic-linear-dendritic (DLD) hybrids are highly functional materials combining the properties of linear and dendritic polymers. Attempts to electrospin DLD polymers composed of hyperbranched dendritic blocks of 2,2-bis(hydroxymethyl) propionic acid on a linear poly(ethylene glycol) core proved unsuccessful. Nevertheless, when these DLD hybrids were blended with an array of different biodegradable polymers as entanglement enhancers, nanofibrous nonwovens were successfully prepared by electrospinning. The pseudogeneration degree of the DLDs, the nature of the co-electrospun polymer and the solvent systems used for the preparation of the electrospinning solutions exerted a significant effect on the diameter and morphology of the electrospun fibers. It is worth-noting that aqueous solutions of the DLD polymers and only 1% (w/v) poly(ethylene oxide) resulted in the production of smoother and thinner nanofibers. Such dendritic nanofibrous scaffolds can be promising materials for biomedical applications due to their biocompatibility, biodegradability, multifunctionality, and advanced structural architecture. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Glandulaurencianols A and B were isolated from the organic extract of the red alga, Laurencia glandulifera, collected from the island of Crete in South Greece. Investigation of the mollusk, Aplysia punctata, collected from the coast of Nea Makri, Central Greece, resulted in the isolation of glandulaurencianols A and C. The structures of the new metabolites, as well as their relative configurations, were established on the basis of thorough analyses of their spectroscopic data.
