The dysfunction of microtubules (α/β-tubulin polymers) underlies a wide range of nervous system genetic abnormalities. Defects in TBCD, a tubulin-folding cofactor, cause diseases highlighted with early-onset encephalopathy with or without neurodegeneration, intellectual disability, seizures, microcephaly and tetraparaperesis. Utilizing various molecular methods, we describe nine patients from four unrelated families with two novel exon 18 variants in TBCD exhibiting the typical neurological phenotype of the disease. Interestingly, all the investigated patients had previously unreported hematological findings in the form of neutropenia and mild degree of anemia and thrombocytopenia. In addition to delineating the neurological phenotype in several patients with TBCD variants, our study stresses on the new association of neutropenia, in particular, with the disease.

Catfish is the largest aquaculture industry in the United States. Edwardsiellosis is considered one of the most significant problems affecting this industry. Edwardsiella piscicida is a newly described species within the genus Edwardsiella, and it was previously classified as Edwardsiella tarda. It causes gastrointestinal septicaemia, primarily in summer months, in farmed channel catfish in the south-eastern United States. In the current study, we adapted gene deletion methods used for Edwardsiella to E. piscicida strain C07-087, which was isolated from a disease outbreak in a catfish production pond. Four genes encoding structural proteins in the type III secretion system (T3SS) apparatus of E. piscicida were deleted by homologous recombination and allelic exchange to produce in-frame deletion mutants (EpΔssaV, EpΔesaM, EpΔyscR and EpΔescT). A novel, facile reaction for the synthesis of series of bis-thiazole derivatives has been developed from the reaction of the appropriate thiosemicarbazone derivatives and bis-2-bromoacetylthieno[2,3-b]thiophene derivatives in ethanol under reflux. The structures of the newly synthesized products were established on the basis of spectral data (mass, IR, and 1H and 13C NMR) and elemental analyses. Fifteen compounds of the synthesized compounds were evaluated for their anticancer activity against human liver hepatocellular carcinoma cell line (HepG2). All compounds showed anticancer activity but differs in potency comparable with the reference drug Cisplatin. Moreover, molecular docking study using MOE software predicted the best binding mode between the most active compound 5o into the active site of human heat-shock protein 90. The computational studies are confirming the results in biological activity.

This study was designed to evaluate the ability of MALDI Biotyper (MBT) compared with Vitek™ 2 compact system for accurate identification of Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and coagulase‐negative staphylococci (CNS) strains and discriminate methicillin‐sensitive S. aureus (MSSA) from methicillin‐resistant S. aureus (MRSA). Throughout Al‐Qassim region, Saudi Arabia, a total of 198 isolates of S. aureus (132 MSSA and 66 MRSA) and 44 CNS were collected from five dairy farms where the prevalence of staphylococcal mastitis was reported. The results produced by Vitek™ 2 compact system demonstrated that 123/132 MSSA isolates (93.18%), 61/66 MRSA (92.42%), and 37/44 CNS species (84.09%) were correctly identified. However; 130/132 MSSA (98.48%), 64/66 MRSA (96.96%), and 44/44 CNS (100%) were correctly identified by MBT with score ≥2. 00. The principal component analysis (PCA) dendrogram generated by MBT illustrated that the tested isolates were classified into two groups of Staphylococcus species at the distance level of 600. S. aureus isolates were found to be closely related with higher peak intensities in the mass of 3,993 Da, 4,121 Da and 5,845 Da were detected in MRSA, whereas, that were lost in MSSA. Conclusion: This study verified that MBT is an alternative powerful tool for precise identification and discrimination of Staphylococcus species.

Guidelines call for healthcare organizations to provide emotional support for clinicians involved in adverse events, but little is known about how these organizations seek to meet this need. We surveyed US members of the American Society for Healthcare Risk Management (ASHRM) about the presence, features, and perceived efficacy of their organization's provider support program. The majority reported that their organization had a support program, but features varied widely and there are substantial opportunities to improve services. Provider support programs should enhance referral mechanisms and peer support, critically appraise the role of employee assistance programs, and demonstrate their value to institutional leaders.

Coupling the diazonium salt of aniline derivatives with (chlorobenzoylmethylene)methylpyrimidinone furnishes the arylhydrazono derivatives (III) in good yields.

Sixty-four patients with severe postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) required surgical intervention during the years 1983 to 1987. Bilateral hypogastric artery ligation (HAL) was the initial surgical approach in 45% (29/64) and hysterectomy in 55% (35/64). HAL successfully controlled hemorrhage in 65% (19/29), and failed in 35% (10/29) where hysterectomy was required as a life saving procedure. Failure of HAL was more evident in atonic PPH than in other situations. Complications were more following hysterectomy; six (6/45) patients required re-exploration for intraperitoneal hemorrhage and two (2/45) patients died following hysterectomy. HAL was found to be a relatively easy, safe and successful procedure to be attempted as an initial surgical approach for all severe PPH, specially where uterine conservation was desired.

An investigation of the composition of garlic skins showed the presence of proteins, lipids, lignin, mannitol, pectin and polysaccharides. Garlic skins are rich in pectin (27%), combined rhamnose (11.42%) and galactose (5.6%). Periodate oxidation studies of pectic acid showed the absence of 1,3-linked residues and branch points and indicated a linear galacturonan of 1,4-linked D-galacturonic acid. Chromatographic analyses were carried out on the hydrolysis products of pectic acid, which had been oxidised by periodate plus bromine, and also on those obtained after reduction of the periodate-oxidised pectic acid.
