Pentatomidae is the third largest family of true bugs, comprising over 40 tribes. Few tribes have been studied in a phylogenetic context, and none of them have been examined using molecular data. Moreover, little is known about the evolution of key morphological characters widely used in taxonomic and phylogenetic studies at multiple levels. Here, we conduct a phylogenetic study of the tribe Chlorocorini (Pentatominae) combining 69 morphological characters and five DNA loci. We use the inferred phylogeny to reconstruct the evolution of key morphological characters such as the spined humeral angles of the pronotum, a dorsal projection on the apices of the femora and characters of male genitalia. We provide solid evidence that the tribe as currently recognized is not monophyletic based both on DNA and morphological data. The generaArveliusSpinola andEludocorisThomas were consistently placed outside of the Chlorocorini, while the remaining genera were found to form a monophyletic group. We also show that nearly all morphological diagnostic characters for the tribe are homoplastic. The only exception is the development of the hypandrium, which, contrary to expectations for genital traits, showed the slowest evolutionary rates. In contrast, the most rapidly evolving trait is the length of the ostiolar ruga, which may be attributed to selection favoring anti-predatory behavior and other functions of its associated scent glands. Lastly, we also provide a preliminary glimpse of the main phylogenetic relationships within the Pentatomidae, which indicates that most of the included subfamilies and tribes are not monophyletic. Our results suggest that the current subfamily-level classification of Pentatomidae is not adequate to reflect its evolutionary history, and we urge for a more complete phylogeny of the family.

Genitalia are multitasking structures whose development is mediated by numerous regulatory pathways. This multifactorial nature provides an avenue for multiple sources of selection. As a result, genitalia tend to evolve as modular systems comprising semi-independent subsets of structures, yet the processes that give rise to those patterns are still poorly understood. Here, we ask what are the relative roles of development and function in shaping modular patterns of genitalia within populations and across species of stink-bugs. We found that male genitalia are less integrated, more modular, and primarily shaped by functional demands. In contrast, females show higher integration, lower modularity, and a predominant role of developmental processes. Further, interactions among parts of each sex are more determinant to modularity than those between the sexes, and patterns of modularity are equivalent between and within species. Our results strongly indicate that genitalia have been subjected to sex-specific selection, although male and female genitalia are homologous and functionally associated. Moreover, modular patterns are seemingly constant in the evolutionary history of stink-bugs, suggesting a scenario of multivariate stabilizing selection within each sex. Our study demonstrates that interactions among genital parts of the same sex may be more fundamental to genital evolution than previously thought.

Aim Direct-acting oral anticoagulants (DOACs) have become available for the prevention of stroke in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF). Conflicting results have been published on the risk of acute myocardial infarction (AMI) with the use of DOACs in comparison with vitamin K antagonists (VKAs). The objective of the present study was to evaluate the risk of AMI in patients with AF who are exposed to either VKAs, DOACs or low-dose (< 325 mg) aspirin. Methods We conducted a population-based cohort study using data from the Clinical Practice Research Datalink (2008–2014). The study population (n = 30 146) consisted of all patients ≥18 years with a diagnosis of AF who were new users of VKAs, DOACs (rivaroxaban and dabigatran) or aspirin. Cox proportional hazards models were used to estimate the hazard ratio (HR) of AMI for users of DOACs or aspirin vs. VKA. Adjustments were made for age, gender, lifestyle, risk factors, comorbidity and other drugs. Results The risk of AMI was doubled when we compared current use of DOACs with current use of VKAs [adjusted HR 2.11; 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.08, 4.12] and for current users of aspirin vs. current VKA users (adjusted HR 1.91; 95% CI 1.45, 2.51). Conclusions There is a twofold increase in the risk of AMI for users of DOACs, in comparison with VKAs, in AF therapy. In addition, the results suggested that in patients with AF, the incidence of AMI is higher during aspirin monotherapy than during the use of VKAs.

The realization of quasicrystals has attracted a considerable attention due to their unusual structures and properties. The concept of quasicrystals in the atomically thin materials is even more appealing due to the in‐plane covalent bonds and weak interlayer interactions. Here, it is demonstrated that 2D quasicrystals can be created/isolated from bulk phases because of long‐range interlayer ordered aperiodic arrangements. An ultrasonication‐assisted exfoliation of polygrained icosahedral Al–Pd–Mn quasicrystals at room temperature shows the formation of a large area of mono‐ and few layers in threefold quasicrystalline plane. The formation of these layers from random grain orientation consistently indicates that the threefold plane is most stable in comparison to the twofold and fivefold planes in icosahedral clusters. The above experimental observations are further supported with help of theoretical simulations. The mono‐ and few‐layered aperiodic planes render plentiful active sites for the catalysis of hydrogen evolution reaction. The threefold 2D quasicrystalline plane exhibits a hydrogen evolution reaction overpotential of ≈100 mV (160 times less than bulk counterpart) and long‐term durability. Schwartzites are 3D porous solids with periodic minimal surfaces having negative Gaussian curvatures and can possess unusual mechanical and electronic properties. The mechanical behavior of primitive and gyroid schwartzite structures across different length scales is investigated after these geometries are 3D printed at centimeter length scales based on molecular models. Molecular dynamics and finite elements simulations are used to gain further understanding on responses of these complex solids under compressive loads and kinetic impact experiments. The results show that these structures hold great promise as high load bearing and impact-resistant materials due to a unique layered deformation mechanism that emerges in these architectures during loading. Easily scalable techniques such as 3D printing can be used for exploring mechanical behavior of various predicted complex geometrical shapes to build innovative engineered materials with tunable properties.

The overall electrocatalytic activity toward hydrogen evolution reaction for layered transition metal dichalcogenides is governed by their intrinsic activity, the corresponding density of active sites, and the electron transfer resistance. Here, nanoengineering strategies to scale down both the lateral size and thickness of layered 1T-TiS2 powder to quantum dots (QDs) by bath sonication and probing sonication incision are employed. Uniform lateral size of 3–6 nm in the resulting QDs enhances the density of edge sites while the atomic layer thickness (1–2 nm) facilitates the electron transfer from the substrate to the edge sites. The obtained TiS2 QDs exhibit superior hydrogen evolution reaction activity over TiS2 nanosheets and MoS2 QDs prepared by the same method. The turnover frequency of TiS2 QDs with a small loading of 0.7 ng cm−2 in an optimal deposition on electrode reached ≈2.0 s−1 at an overpotential of −0.2 V versus RHE, several orders of magnitude higher than TiS2 nanosheets (0.01 s−1) and MoS2 QDs (0.07 s−1).

Carbon-based nanomaterials have garnered a lot of attention in the research of yesteryear. Here this study reports a composite based on fluorinated graphene oxide—a multifunctional subsidiary of graphene; and iron oxide nanoparticles as a contrast agent for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Extensive structural and functional characterization is carried out to understand composite behavior toward biotoxicity and its performance as a contrast agent. The electron withdrawing fluorine group decreases the charge transfer to iron oxide increasing the magnetic saturation of the composite thus enhancing the contrast. The interaction of paramagnetic and superparamagnetic systems yields a superior contrast agent for MRI and fluorescent imaging.

Here, the scalable synthesis of low-density 3D macroscopic structure of graphene oxide (GO) interconnected with polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) is reported. A controlled amount of PDMS is infused into the freeze-dried foam to result into a very rigid structure with improved mechanical properties, such as tensile plasticity and toughness. The PDMS wets the graphene oxide sheets and acts like glue between the 2D sheets. Molecular dynamics simulations are used to further elucidate the mechanisms of the interactions of graphene oxide layers with PDMS. The ability of using the interconnecting graphene oxide foam as an effective oil–water separator and stable insulating behavior to elevated temperatures are further demonstrated. The structural rigidity of the sample is also tested using laser impact and compared with GO foam.

We report a case of a 55-year-old man with vagal paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (AF) who was submitted to selective epicardial and endocardial atrial vagal denervation with the objective of treating AF. Radiofrequency pulses were applied on epicardial and endocardial surface of the left atrium close to right pulmonary veins (PVs) and also on epicardial surface close to left inferior PV. Following the procedure, patient presented with symptoms of gastroparesis, which was documented on CT scan and gastric emptying scintigraphy. Symptoms were transient and the patient recovered completely.
