Conclusion: This is the first article in Colombia that was focused on determining the frequency of possible cannabis poisoning in canines. The dogs that are more susceptible to suffering cannabis poisoning are puppies and small-size dogs that are attended by veterinary medical centers and are in neighborhoods that are recognizable by people who have high salaries.

Abstract Introduction Locked‐in syndrome (LIS) is characterized by tetraplegia, anarthria, paralysis of cranial nerves, and facial musculature, with the preservation of consciousness and cognitive abilities, as well as vertical eye movements and eyelid movements, hearing, and breathing. Three types of LIS are distinguished: classic, incomplete, and total. The aim of the present study was to describe the life history of a person with LIS, as well as the wife's experience and perspective of this life history. Methods A qualitative life history study was conducted with two participants: a 54‐year‐old man diagnosed with LIS and his 50‐year‐old wife. Data were collected through interviews and autobiographical documents submitted by the participants and analyzed following Braun and Clarke's method of inductive thematic analysis. Results Five main themes were identified: (1) how to understand and overcome the new situation; (2) the process of care and rehabilitation; (3) communication; (4) writing as a way of helping oneself and others; and (5) personal autonomy and social participation. Conclusion The participants valued the support of their friends and family in the acceptance stage of the new situation, giving special importance to the communication skills and medical attention received after diagnosis.

Abstract Chromatin homeostasis mediates essential processes in eukaryotes, where histone chaperones have emerged as major regulatory factors during DNA replication, repair, and transcription. The dynamic nature of these processes, however, has severely impeded their characterization at the molecular level. Here, fluorescence optical tweezers are applied to follow histone chaperone dynamics in real time. The molecular action of SET/template‐activating factor‐Iβ and nucleophosmin 1—representing the two most common histone chaperone folds—are examined using both nucleosomes and isolated histones. It is shown that these chaperones present binding specificity for fully dismantled nucleosomes and are able to recognize and disrupt non‐native histone‐DNA interactions. Furthermore, the histone eviction process and its modulation by cytochrome c are scrutinized. This approach shows that despite the different structures of these chaperones, they present conserved modes of action mediating nucleosome remodeling.

Abstract Several Mesoamerican crops constitute wild‐to‐domesticated complexes generated by multiple initial domestication events, and continuous gene flow among crop populations and between these populations and their wild relatives. It has been suggested that the domestication of cotton (Gossypium hirsutum) started in the northwest of the Yucatán Peninsula, from where it spread to other regions inside and outside of Mexico. We tested this hypothesis by assembling chloroplast genomes of 23 wild, landraces, and breeding lines (transgene‐introgressed and conventional). The phylogenetic analysis showed that the evolutionary history of cotton in Mexico involves multiple events of introgression and genetic divergence. From this, we conclude that Mexican landraces arose from multiple wild populations. Our results also revealed that their structural and functional chloroplast organizations had been preserved. However, genetic diversity decreases as a consequence of domestication, mainly in transgene‐introgressed (TI) individuals (π = 0.00020, 0.00001, 0.00016, 0, and 0, of wild, TI‐wild, landraces, TI‐landraces, and breeding lines, respectively). We identified homologous regions that differentiate wild from domesticated plants and indicate a relationship among the samples. A decrease in genetic diversity associated with transgene introgression in cotton was identified for the first time, and our outcomes are therefore relevant to both biosecurity and agrobiodiversity conservation.

Abstract Aim Primary dysmenorrhea is a problem that affects both young and adult women, with a significant impact on their daily lives. This pain is primarily managed through the consumption of non‐steroidal anti‐inflammatories and non‐pharmacological approaches such as exercise, acupressure and heat. The present study aimed to describe how Spanish university students manage dysmenorrhea. Design Qualitative case study. Methods Nursing students (N = 33) from the region of Andalusia (Spain) participated in focus groups. A purposive sampling method was used, and the data were collected through videoconferencing and subsequently analysed thematically. The guidelines for conducting qualitative studies established by the consolidated criteria for reporting qualitative research (COREQ) and the standards for reporting qualitative research (SRQR) were followed. Results Four principal themes were identified: (a) Strategies for pain management; (b) using painkillers; (c) choosing the ideal treatment; (d) non‐pharmacological interventions. Conclusions The nursing students experienced difficulties in managing primary dysmenorrhea, they self‐medicated, expressed reluctance to seek professional medical advice, used non‐pharmacological strategies and seeked advice from other women within their family/social circle.

Abstract Background Thymomas are a group of rare neoplasms of the anterior mediastinum. The objective of this study was to describe the demographics, clinical characteristics and treatment approaches in Latin America. Methods This was a retrospective multicenter cohort study including patients with histologically proven thymomas diagnosed between 1997 and 2018. Demographics, clinicopathological characteristics and therapeutic outcomes were collected locally and analyzed in a centralized manner. Results A total of 135 patients were included. Median age at diagnosis was 53 years old (19–84), 53.3% (n = 72) of patients were female and 87.4% had an ECOG performance score ranging from 0–1. A total of 47 patients (34.8%) had metastatic disease at diagnosis. Concurrent myasthenia gravis occurred in 21.5% of patients. Surgery was performed in 74 patients (54.8%), comprising 27 (20%) tumorectomies and 47 (34.8%) thymectomies. According to the Masaoka‐Koga system, overall survival (OS) at five‐years was 73.4%, 63.8% and 51%, at stages I–II, III–IVA and IVB, respectively (p = 0.005). Furthermore, patients with low lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) (≤373 IU/L) at baseline and myasthenia gravis concurrence showed significantly better OS (p = 0.001 and p = 0.008, respectively). In multivariate analysis, high LDH levels (HR 2.8 [95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.1–7.8]; p = 0.036) at baseline and not performing a surgical resection (HR 4.1 [95% CI: 1.3–12.7]; p = 0.016) were significantly associated with increased risk of death. Conclusions Our data provides the largest insight into the clinical characteristics and outcomes of patients with thymomas in Latin America. Survival in patients with thymomas continues to be very favorable, especially when subjected to adequate local control.

Background The intestinal microbiota is an important factor in modulating immune‐mediated tumor cell destruction. Alterations in the microbiome composition have been linked to reduced efficacy of immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI) therapies. Therefore, antibiotic treatment (ATB), which modifies the diversity of the gut bacteria populations, could lead to a reduced efficacy of ICI treatments. Methods This was a retrospective cohort study. Patients with advanced non‐small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) treated with anti‐programmed cell death ligand‐1 (PD‐L1) alone, or in combination in three different countries in Latin America were included. After identification, patients were placed into three groups: Non‐ATB exposed (no‐ATB), exposed within 30 days of the first dose of ICI (pre‐ICI ATB) and patients receiving ATB concomitantly with ICI (ICI‐ATB). Progression‐free survival (PFS), overall survival (OS) and response rates to treatment with ICI were assessed. Results A total of 140 patients were included, of which 32 patients (23%) received ATB treatment. The most common ATB types were fluoroquinolones and B‐lactams. No differences in survival according to antibiotic type were identified. Median OS in patients not exposed to ATB was 40.6 months (95% CI: 32–67.7), compared with 20.3 months (95% CI: 12.1‐non‐reached [NR]) for patients with pre‐ICI ATB treatment and 24.7 months (95% CI: 13‐NR) for patients treated with ATB concomitantly with ICI. There were no significant differences in terms of PFS, or response rates across all treatment groups. Conclusions Antibiotic treatment was associated with reduced OS in Hispanic patients with NSCLC treated with ICIs.

Abstract Objective To estimate the prevalence and significance of cranial nerve (CN) imaging abnormalities in patients with hereditary neuropathy and discuss clinical implications. Methods We retrospectively analyzed data from patients at four tertiary academic medical centers with hereditary neuropathy diagnoses who had undergone gadolinium‐enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the brain or skull base between 2004 and 2018. MRI scans, as well as computed tomography imaging when available, were reviewed and bivariable analysis was performed to identify predictors of CN abnormalities on imaging. Results Among 39 patients meeting study criteria, 11 had clinical CN deficits (28%) and 8 had CN abnormalities on imaging (21%). Of the patients with CN abnormalities on imaging, half had CN deficits (4/8) and only a quarter had imaging abnormalities of the CNs with the deficits (2/8). Imaging abnormalities were found in varied CNs, including CNs III, V, VII, and the VII/VIII complex in the internal auditory canal. MRI obtained for the purpose of evaluating CN deficits had a statistically significant increased likelihood of containing CN imaging abnormalities. However, CN deficits themselves were not predictive of imaging abnormalities. Conclusion Thickening and enhancement of CNs on MRI may be found in approximately 1/5 of patients with hereditary neuropathies and are inconsistently associated with clinical deficits. These imaging findings should not be mistaken for neoplastic and infectious processes as they may be manifestations of the patients' underlying genetic neuropathy. Level of Evidence 4.

Background To compare survival outcomes of patients with advanced or metastatic non‐small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) who received immunotherapy as first‐, second‐ or beyond line, versus matched patients receiving standard chemotherapy with special characterization of hyperprogressors. Methods A retrospective cohort study of 296 patients with unresectable/metastatic NSCLC treated with either, first‐, second‐, third‐ or fourth‐line of immunotherapy was conducted. A matched comparison with a historical cohort of first‐line chemotherapy and a random forest tree analysis to characterize hyperprogressors was conducted. Results Median age was 64 years (range 34–90), 40.2% of patients were female. A total of 91.2% of patients had an Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group (ECOG) performance score ≤ 1. Immunotherapy as first‐line was given to 39 patients (13.7%), second‐line to 140 (48.8%), and as third‐line and beyond to 108 (37.6%). Median overall survival was 12.7 months (95% CI 9.67–14 months) and progression‐free survival (PFS) of 4.27 months (95% CI 3.97–5.0). Background Malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) is an aggressive tumor, associated with poor prognosis. There is a lack of information about the clinical and pathological features related with survival in the Latin American population. Methods The MeSO‐CLICaP registry identified 302 patients with advanced MPM diagnosed and treated between January 2008 and March 2016. The Cox model was applied to determine the variables associated with survival. A random forest tree model was built to predict the response to first‐line chemotherapy among Latin American patients. Results The median age was 61.1 years (SD 10.6 years), 191 (63.2%) were men, 65.9% were ever smokers, and 38.7% had previous exposure to asbestos. A total of 237 (78.5%) had epithelioid tumors, and 188 (62.3%) and 114 (37.7%) cases had stage III or IV MPM, respectively. A total of 49 patients (16.2%) underwent pleurectomy, 57 (18.9%) received radiotherapy, and 279 patients received first‐line platinum‐based chemotherapy. The overall response rate to first‐line chemotherapy was 40.4%, progression‐free survival to first‐line treatment was 5.7 months (95% CI 4.9–6.5), and 63 (20.8%) patients had pemetrexed maintenance. The median overall survival was 16.8 months (95% CI 13.0–20.5), and multivariate analysis found that stage (P = 0.013), and pleurodesis (P = 0.048), were independent prognostic factors for first‐line overall survival. The model to predict response to first‐line chemotherapy obtained a 0.98 area under the curve, a sensitivity of 93%, and a specificity of 95% for detecting responders and non‐responders. Conclusion This study identifies factors associated with clinical benefit from chemotherapy among advanced MPM Latin American patients, emphasizing the impact of histology and the clinical benefit of chemotherapy on outcomes.
