Based on the size- and shape-selective sorption, 13X molecular sieves were developed as solid-phase extraction adsorbents to cleanup serum extract for the determination of polybrominated diphenyl ethers. The important parameters affecting the cleanup efficiency were investigated including the amount of sorbents, the type, and volume of solvents. Under the optimized conditions, the capacity for removing impurities was evaluated via gel permeation chromatography and gas chromatography with mass spectrometry. The results demonstrated that up to 99% of lipids in corn oil (13 mg) can be removed after cleanup, and endogenous compounds in serum can also be effectively eliminated. The cleanup efficiency is not only superior to hydrophile-lipophile balance column, but also close to acid silica gel and multifunction impurity sorbents. Generally, the developed cleanup method exhibited higher recovery for polybrominated diphenyl ethers with more than four bromines, especially for nona- and deca-brominated diphenyl ethers (99.1-117.8%). The cleanup method can be coupled with gas chromatography and tandem mass spectrometry for polybrominated diphenyl ethers analysis in human serum. The method detection limits were 0.01-0.27 ng/mL and average recovery was 50.9-113.3%, except 2,3',4',6-tetrabrominated, 2,3',4,4',6-pentabrominated, and 2,3,3',4,4',5',6-heptabrominated diphenyl ethers. 2,2',4,5'-Tetrabrominated diphenyl ethers had the highest detection frequency (95%) in human serum, whereas decabrominated diphenyl ethers had the maximum mean concentration (0.50 ng/mL).

Understanding the physicochemical properties and heterogeneous processes of aerosols is key not only to elucidate the impacts of aerosols on the atmosphere and humans but also to exploit their further applications, especially for a healthier environment. Experiments that allow for spatially control of single aerosol particles and investigations on the fundamental properties and heterogeneous chemistry at the single-particle level have flourished during the last few decades, and significant breakthroughs in recent years promise better control and novel applications aimed at resolving key issues in aerosol science. Here we propose graphene oxide (GO) aerosols as prototype aerosols containing polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and GO can behave as two-dimensional surfactants which could modify the interfacial properties of aerosols. We describe the techniques of trapping single particles and furthermore the current status of the optical spectroscopy and chemistry of GO. The current applications of these single-particle trapping techniques are summarized and interesting future applications of GO aerosols are discussed.

The release characteristics of a unique blend of carotenoid beadlets designed to increase bioavailability were tested using the dynamic gastrointestinal model TIM‐1. Individual carotenoid bioaccessibility peaks were observed over approximately 3–4 hr in the order of lutein and zeaxanthin first, followed by lycopene, and then finally α‐ and β‐carotene; when tested as a beadlet blend or when the beadlets were compressed into tablets. Bioaccessibility measurements of 7%–20% were similar to those previously reported in literature and comparable between the two formulations, beadlet blend and tablet formulations. Background Potato powder, a rich source of high-quality protein and starch, plays an important role in the production of functional foods. In this study, ball-mill processed potato powders with different particle sizes (278, 208, 129, and 62 μm) were analyzed in terms of physicochemical, pasting, rheological, and digestive properties. Results Scanning electron microscopy and laser diffraction analysis of the samples revealed mono-model particle-size distributions. X-ray diffraction analysis confirmed structure destruction of starch pellets. Proximate composition and physical property analysis showed an increase in the water, ash, protein, and starch content. Meanwhile, the water solubility index and swelling power values were found to increase with decreasing grain size, and so were the brightness (L*) and redness (b*) values of the potato powders. With particle size reduced to 129 μm, large changes were observed in gelatinization properties, such as peak viscosity, trough viscosity, breakdown viscosity, and final viscosity. Oscillatory rheology results also showed that, with the decrease in particle size, the storage modulus (G') and loss modulus (G″) improved, with highest storage modulus (G') observed in the 129 μm particle size. The hydrolysis rate and glycemic index also increased in the 129 μm potato powder. Conclusion The results provide information that could be useful for improving quality characteristics by using specific grain sizes in the development of potato-based products such as gluten-free products and ethnic food products with particular functional and rheological properties. © 2020 Society of Chemical Industry.

Nanoscale transition-metal dichalcogenide materials showed promising potential for visible-light responsive photocatalysis. Here, we report our investigations on the synthesis of heterodimensional nanostructures of two-dimensional (2D) ultrathin MoS2 nanosheets interspersed with ZnO nanoparticles by using a facile two-step method consisting of sonication-aided exfoliation technique followed by a wet chemical process. The photocatalytic activity of the nanocomposites was examined by studying the degradation of different organic dye pollutants and tetracycline, a common antibiotic, under visible-light irradiation. It is found that within 30 min more than 90 % of the model organic dye was photodegraded by the optimized quasi-0D/2D hybrid nanomaterial. The reaction rate of pollutant degradation is about five and eight times higher than those of the pristine MoS2 naonosheets and P25 photocatalysts, respectively. The outstanding photocatalytic activity of the heterodimensional hybrids can be attributed to a few beneficial features from the synergetic effects. Most importantly, the intimate junction between ZnO and MoS2 facilitates the separation of photogenerated carriers, leading to the enhancement of photocatalytic efficiency. A tentative photocatalytic degradation mechanism was proposed and tested. Overall, the present work provides valuable insights for the exploration of cost-effective nanoscale heterodimensional hybrids constructed from atomically thin layered materials.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a global problem which contributes to a significant morbidity and mortality in China. Concomitant inflammatory state further boosts the mortality due to cardiovascular events in patients with CKD undergoing dialysis. There is a general notion that Omega-3 fatty acids including docosahexaenoic acids (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic (EPA) have certain health benefits perhaps via the regulation of inflammation. However, the anti-inflammatory effect of omega-3 fatty acids in patients with CKD is controversial. We analyzed the data of oral supplementation of omega-3 fatty acids in CKD patients by searching literature on database from inception to August 2016. The analysis included randomized controlled trials (RCTs) derived from multiple databases, and the effect of omega-3 fatty acids supplementation versus the control cohorts were compared. All of the data analysis was calculated by RevMan 5.2. A total of 12 RCTs involving 487 patients were included in the meta-analysis. Among them 254 patients received omega-3 fatty acids and 233 patients served as controls who received placebo. The meta-analysis revealed no statistical significance in serum levels of C-reactive protein (CRP) (SMD, -0.20; 95% CI, -0.44 to 0.05; P = 0.11), IL-6 (SMD, 0.00; 95% CI, -0.33 to 0.33; P = 0.99) and TNF-α (SMD, 0.14; 95% CI, -0.17 to 0.44; P = 0.38) between the omega-3 fatty acids supplementation group and control. This suggested that there is insufficient evidence to conclude the benefit of omega-3 fatty acids oral supplementation in reducing serum levels of CRP, IL-6 and TNF-α in patients with CKD.

As the simplest and the most abundant dicarboxylic acids in the atmosphere, oxalic acid (OA) not only plays a key role in aerosol nucleation, but also acts as a prototypical compound for the investigation of intra- and intermolecular hydrogen bonding interactions. In this work, a systematic theoretical study on the hydrated OA dimers were carried out using density functional theory (DFT) at the M06-2X/6-311++G(3df, 2p) level. The properties of the hydrogen bonds in clusters were inspected through topological analysis using atoms in molecules (AIM) theory. The most stable OA dimer involves a cyclic structure with two intermolecular hydrogen bonds. Our calculations show that one H2O has slightly effect on the hydrogen bonds, while two water molecules weaken and three water molecules even break the two intermolecular hydrogen bonds between OAs. Furthermore, there are no hydrogen bond interactions between OAs in almost all stable clusters when the H2O number increases to four and five. Additionally, the ionization and the isomerization of OA through water-assisted proton transfer phenomena were observed in tetrahydrates and pentahydrates. Our work has provided new insights into the conversion process of anhydrous OA to hydrated clusters, which are helpful for further understanding the atmospheric nucleation process and the nature of hydrogen bond.

Summary This paper presents cross-coupled voltage-controlled oscillators (VCOs) involving array of switchable inductors (i.e., N = 1 and N = 2 switchable inductors) and implemented using gallium-nitride high electron mobility transistors on Si substrate technology for worldwide interoperability for microwave access applications. Band selection and coarse frequency tuning were achieved using the array of switchable inductors, whereas fine tuning was controlled using varactors. Two bands were obtained using the one-stage switchable inductor VCO operating in the ranges 3.41–3.57 GHz and 3.85–3.94 GHz. The VCO output power (Pout) was 21.8 dBm at 3.57 GHz from a 10-V power supply. Four continuous bands were obtained using the two-stage switchable inductors VCO operating in the range of 3.16–3.4, 3.25–3.64, 3.48–3.71 and 3.64–3.9 GHz, respectively. An additional band was generated by fine-tuning the inductance through mutual coupling between the transmission line and one of the inductors. The proposed two-stage switchable inductors VCO provided a 21% tuning range at frequencies ranging with a control voltage ranging from 12 to 20 V, a low phase noise of −123 dBc/Hz at a 1-MHz offset from a 3.3-GHz carrier and a Pout of 21 dBm at 3.5 GHz from a 10-V power supply. This study aimed to evaluate the diagnostic value of serum cystatin C for renal dysfunction in diabetic patients. Eligible trials were searched from multiple databases, the data were extracted into a 2 × 2 table after the quality assessment of included articles. The pooled sensitivity, specificity and other parameters of accuracy of cystatin C were analyzed using Stata version 12.0. Seventeen studies involving 2173 patients were included. The pooled sensitivity and specificity of serum cystatin C for the diagnosis of renal dysfunction were 0.88 (95% CI: 0.83–0.91) and 0.87 (95% CI: 0.82–0.91), respectively. The positive likelihood ratio was 6.69 (95% CI: 4.83–9.26), negative likelihood ratio was 0.14 (95% CI: 0.10–0.20) and diagnostic odds ratio (DOR) was 46.57 (95% CI: 27.76–78.13). The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve was 0.94. Analysis of the 12 studies that investigated serum creatinine indicated that serum cystatin C was more accurate than serum creatinine for the diagnosis of renal dysfunction. Our results indicate that serum cystatin C is an effective index in diagnosing renal dysfunction comparing serum creatinine, serum cystatin C is more sensitivity for evaluation of renal function in diabetic patients.

The reconstruction capability of the blue phase (BP) template with low polymer concentration was investigated. A threshold polymer concentration to reconstruct the BP with the chiral three-dimensional template was confirmed in different kinds of polymer systems. The anchoring energy of the template may reassemble the double twist cylinder structure of BP liquid crystal (BPLC) by refilling either the same-handed or reverse-handed chiral materials within a certain range of helical twisting power (HTP). Meanwhile, because of the lowered anchoring energy, the kerr constant of the reconstructed BPLC increased by 104%, from 1.81 nm/V2 to 3.70 nm/V2, by refilling the reverse-handed chiral material.

Lamivudine, telbivudine, and entecavir are the first-line drugs covered by the Taiwan National Health Insurance as 3-year treatments for patients with chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV), but the optimal treatment duration of each remains unclear. We aimed to detect HBV treatment-cessation durability, and compare the predictors in patients with and without clinical relapse. In this retrospective cohort study, 210 patients with chronic HBV who tested hepatitis B e-antigen positive or hepatitis B e-antigen negative were treated for 3 years with a nucleos(t)ide analogue. Of these, 102 patients continued therapy after 3 years, while 88 patients stopped treatment and were followed for 1 year due to financial difficulties. Efficacy was assessed in terms of alanine aminotransferase (ALT) level normalization, HBV DNA clearance, virus breakthrough, clinical relapse, and liver decompensation. The durability predictors were evaluated by host factors, HBV DNA, and drug differences. Eighty patients (14 on lamivudine, 19 on telbivudine, and 47 on entecavir) were recruited. There was no difference in clinical-relapse rate among lamivudine, telbivudine, and entecavir (35.7% vs. 36.8% vs. 31.9%, respectively; p = 0.916), and liver decompensated hepatitis was absent. In baseline clinical characteristics, there were no differences between the clinical-relapse and nonrelapse groups in age, sex, cirrhosis, prior treatment, HBV DNA, pretreatment ALT, or hepatitis B e-antigen (HBeAg). The mean 3rd year serum ALT level differed significantly between clinical-relapse and nonrelapse patients (37.5 U/L vs. 27.7 U/L, respectively; p = 0.044). The 3-year nucleos(t)ide analogue off-treatment in patients with chronic HBV delivered according to the Taiwan National Health Insurance guidelines had an overall 33.8% 1-year clinical-relapse rate without any decompensated hepatitis flare-ups.
