The metallic 1T-MoS2 has attracted considerable attention as an effective catalyst for hydrogen evolution reactions (HERs). However, the fundamental mechanism about the catalytic activity of 1T-MoS2 and the associated phase evolution remain elusive and controversial. Herein, we prepared the most stable 1T-MoS2 by hydrothermal exfoliation of MoS2 nanosheets vertically rooted into rigid one-dimensional TiO2 nanofibers. The 1T-MoS2 can keep highly stable over one year, presenting an ideal model system for investigating the HER catalytic activities as a function of the phase evolution. Both experimental studies and theoretical calculations suggest that 1T phase can be irreversibly transformed into a more active 1T′ phase as true active sites in photocatalytic HERs, resulting in a "catalytic site self-optimization". Hydrogen atom adsorption is the major driving force for this phase transition.

A new hierarchical nanoarchitecture with integration of multiple active materials has been developed for highly efficient hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), by decorating a perpendicular hybrid of MoS2 and N-doped graphene nanosheets with CdS nanoparticles. The unique architecture promoted light trapping and absorption for highly efficient light harvesting and photocarrier generation, and offered an unblocked electron transport pathway for rapid charge separation/transport to suppress charge recombination. Its high surface area and high density of active sites result in highly efficient utilization of photogenerated carriers for productive HER. Significantly, without using noble metals as co-catalysts, the photocatalysts demonstrated rapid HER rates as high as 5.01 mmol h−1 g−1 under visible-light irradiation, which was approximately 25 times that of pure CdS. The hydrogen production remained stable after a continued test for 30 h, showing an exceedingly high performance and superior stability.

Reduced graphene oxide (rGO) is a promising support material for nanosized electrocatalysts. However, the conventional stacking arrangement of rGO sheets confines the electrocatalysts between rGO layers, which decreases the number of catalytic sites substantially. We report here a facile synthesis of vertically oriented reduced graphene oxide (VrGO) through cyclic voltammetric electrolysis of graphene oxide (GO) in the presence of Na2 PdCl4 . Experiments without Pd nanoparticles or with a low loading amount of Pd nanoparticles results in the deposition of rGO parallel to the electrodes. The vertical orientation of Pd/rGO nanoflakes causes a remarkable enhancement of the catalytic activity toward methanol electro-oxidation. The mass activity (620.1 A gPd (-1) ) of Pd/VrGO is 1.9 and 6.2 times that of Pd/flat-lying rGO (331.8 A gPd (-1) ) and commercial Pd/C (100.5 A gPd (-1) ), respectively. Furthermore, the Pd/VrGO catalyst shows excellent resistance to CO poisoning. This work provides a simple wet-chemical method for VrGO preparation.

Ethylene polymerization was performed with the TiO2 nanotube supported metallocene catalytic system. The effects of Al/Zr molar ratio and time in polymerization on the catalytic behavior of the catalysts and the morphologies of the polyethylene were investigated. The nanofibers, floccules and nanosheets of polyethylene were obtained by controlling the polymerization conditions. Because the nanotubes confined the direction of propagation of the polyethylene chains, nanofibers were attained by extrusion polymerization, while the amount of floccules increased with extended polymerization time and nanosheets were mainly produced at high Al/Zr molar ratios. The possible correlation between the polymerization conditions and polyethylene morphologies was elucidated. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys, 2011.

Ethylene homopolymerizations and copolymerizations were catalyzed by zirconocene catalysts entrapped inside functionalized. montmorillonites that had been rendered organophilic via the ion exchange of the interlamellar cations of layered montmorillonite with hydrochlorides Of L-amino acids (AAH(+)Cl(-)) or their methyl esters (MeAAH(+)Cl(-)), with or without the further addition of hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (C16H33N+Me3Br-; R4N+Br-). In contrast to the homogeneous CP2ZrCl2/methylaluminoxane catalyst for ethylene homopolymerizations and copolymerizations with 1-octene, the intercalated Cp2ZrCl2 activated by methylaluminoxane for ethylene homopolymerizations and copolymerizations with 1-octene proved to be more effective in the synthesis of polyethylenes with controlled molecular weights, chemical compositions and structures, and properties, including the bulk density. The effects of the properties of the organic guests on the preparation and catalytic performance of the intercalated zirconocene catalysts were studied.

Macroporous functionalized. polymer beads of poly(4-vinylpyridine-co-1,4-divinylbenzene) [P(VPy-co-DVB)] were prepared by a multistep polymerization, including a polystyrene (PS) shape template by emulsifier-free emulsion polymerization, linear PS seeds by staged template suspension polymerization, and macroporous functionalized polymer beads of P(VPy-co-DVB) by multistep seeded polymerization. The polymer beads, having a cellular texture, were made of many small, spherical particles. The bead size was 10-50 mum, and the pore size was 0.1-1.5 mum. The polymer beads were used as supports for zirconocene catalysts in ethylene polymerization. They were very different from traditional polymer supports. The polymer beads could be exfoliated to yield many spherical particles dispersed in the resulting polyethylene particles during ethylene polymerization. The influence of the polymer beads on the catalytic behavior of the supported catalyst and morphology of the resulting polyethylene was investigated.

Ethylene polymerization was carried out with zirconocene catalysts supported on montmorillonite (or functionalized montmorillonite). The functionalized montmorillonite was from simple ion exchange of [CH3O2CCH2NH3](+) (MeGlyH(+)) ions with interlamellar cations of layered montmorillonites. The functionalized montmorillonlites [high-purity montmorillonite (MMT)-MeGlyH(+)] had larger interlayer spacing (12.69 Angstrom) than montmorillonites without treatment (9.65 Angstrom). The zirconocene catalyst system [Cp2ZrCl2/methylaluminoxane (MAO)/MMT-MeGlyH(+)] had much higher Zr loading and higher activities than those of' other zirconocene catalyst systems (Cp2ZrCl2/MMT, Cp2ZrCl2/MMT-MeGlyH(+), Cp2ZrCl2/MAO/MMT, [CP2ZrCl](+)[BF4]/MMT, [Cp2ZrCl][BF4](-)/MMT-MeGlyH(+), [CP2ZrCl](+)[BF4](-)/MAO/MMT-MeGlyH(+), and [Cp2ZrCl](+)[BF4](-)/MAO/MMT). The polyethylenes with good bulk density were obtained from the catalyst systems, particularly (CP2ZrCl2/MAO/MMT-MeGlyH(1)). MeGlyH(+) and MAO seemed to play important roles for preparation of the supported zirconocenes and polymerization of ethylene. The difference in Zr loading and catalytic activity among the supported zirconocene catalysts is discussed.

Four new nanaomycins (1 - 4), together with two known compounds, nanaomycin αA (5) and nanaomycin βA (6) were isolated from a fermentation broth of Streptomyces hebeiensis derived from lichen. The structures of the new nanaomycins 1 - 4 were established using comprehensive NMR spectroscopic data analysis as well as UV, IR, and MS data. The antimicrobial activities of 1 - 6 were evaluated against Gram-positive bacteria and fungus. Compounds 5 and 6 showed antimicrobial activities against the test microorganisms, while 1 - 4 were inactive at 100 μg/ml.

The use of functional groups bearing silica/poly(styrene-co-4-vinylpyridine) core-shell particles as a support for a zirconocene catalyst in ethylene polymerization was studied. Several factors affecting the behavior of the supported catalyst and the properties of the resulting polymer, such as time, temperature, Al/N (molar ratio), and Al/Zr (molar ratio), were examined. The conditions of the supported catalyst preparation were more important than those of the ethylene polymerization. The state of the supported catalyst itself played a decisive role in both the catalytic behavior of the supported catalyst and the properties of polyethylene (PE). IR and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy were used to follow the formation of the supports. The formation of cationic active species is hypothesized, and the performance of the core-shell-particle-supported zirconocene catalyst is discussed as well. The bulk density of the PE formed was higher than that of the polymer obtained from homogeneous and polymer-supported Cp2ZrCl2/methylaluminoxane catalyst systems. (C) 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
