In this study, an acid-treated-activated carbon was prepared from chestnut oak shell carbonization followed by modification with hydrochloric acid/nitric acid and then used as a new sorbent for headspace needle-trap extraction of chlorophenol compounds from aqueous solutions. Different techniques, including scanning electron microscopy, nitrogen adsorption-desorption analysis, and Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy were used for the characterization of the sorbents. The effects of some experimental parameters, including the temperature, pH, sorbent amount, and time of extraction were optimized. The great concern over the environmental impact of wastewaters has led to the designing of advanced treatment processes to upgrade conventional treatment plants and achieve a significant reduction of contaminants in receiving waters. In the present study we combined chemical and ecotoxicological analyses, aiming to evaluate the reduction of toxicity effects associated with the removal of micropollutants and to define the contribution of the detected compounds to the overall toxicity of the mixtures in a series of wastewater effluents collected from a secondary treatment (OUT 2) and from a tertiary activated carbon treatment (OUT 3) plant. The target compounds were selected after a screening procedure among pharmaceuticals, musk fragrances, and trace metals. The classical algal growth inhibition test was conducted on the original effluent samples and on different fractions obtained by solid-phase extraction (SPE) treatment. A good accordance was found between the removal of toxicity (30%-80%) and organic compounds (70%-80%) after the tertiary treatment, suggesting its high efficiency to improve the wastewater quality. The discrepancy between the contribution to the overall toxicity of the nonadsorbable compounds (i.e., inorganic or very polar organic compounds) as experimentally measured by the SPE bioassays (18%-76%) and calculated by the concentration addition approach (97%) could be mitigated by including the bioavailability correction in metal-toxicity modeling of wastewater mixtures. For the organic compounds, the toxic equivalency method enabled us to quantify the portion of toxicity explained by the detected chemicals in both OUT 2 (82%-104%) and OUT 3 (5%-57%), validating the selection of the target molecules. Thin-layer capping using activated carbon has been described as a cost-effective in situ sediment remediation method for organic contaminants. We compared the capping efficiency of powdered activated carbon (PAC) against granular activated carbon (GAC) using contaminated sediment from Oskarshamn harbor, Sweden. The effects of resuspension on contaminant retention and cap integrity were also studied. Intact sediment cores were collected from the outer harbor and brought to the laboratory. Three thin-layer caps, consisting of PAC or GAC mixed with clay or clay only, were added to the sediment surface. Resuspension was created using a motor-driven paddle to simulate propeller wash from ship traffic. Passive samplers were placed in the sediment and in the water column to measure the sediment-to-water release of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and metals. Our results show that a thin-layer cap with PAC reduced sediment-to-water fluxes of PCBs by 57% under static conditions and 91% under resuspension. Thin-layer capping with GAC was less effective than PAC but reduced fluxes of high-molecular weight PAHs. Thin-layer capping with activated carbon was less effective at retaining metals, except for Cd, the release of which was significantly reduced by PAC. Although conventional on-site wastewater treatment systems (OWTSs) provide only primary treatment of domestic wastewater, removal of a limited level of nutrients (N, P), pathogens, and pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) could be achieved by such a treatment process. Biochar has the capacity to remove various contaminants and has been widely used as an ideal soil amendment in agriculture due to its persistence, superior nutrient-retention properties, low cost, and ready availability. However, few applications on the use of biochar in onsite wastewater treatment have been explored. In this review, we systematically reviewed the applications of biochar in filtration-based OWTSs for nutrient (N, P) removal and recovery as well as pathogen and PPCP removal. Although adsorption was the main mechanism for P, pathogen, and PPCP removal, biochar can also serve as the growth media for enhanced biological degradation, improves available alkalinity, and increases water holding capacity in the OWTSs. The biochar source, surface modification methods, and preparation procedures (e.g., pyrolysis temperature change) have significant effects on contaminant removal performance in biochar-amended OWTSs. Specifically, contradictory results have been reported on the effect of pyrolysis temperature change on biochar removal performance (i.e., increased, decreased, or no change) of N, P, and PPCPs. Wastewater composition and environmental pH also play important roles in the removal of nutrients, pathogens, and PPCPs. Overall, biochar holds great potential to serve as an alternative filtration material or to be amended to the current OWTS to improve system performance in removing a variety of contaminants at low cost.

Heavy metals and metalloids, in sludge and sediments, are environmental pollutants of concern with long-term negative effects on human and ecological health. In this study, sludge from biological treatment of municipal waste leachate was pyrolyzed into leachate sludge-derived biochar (LSDB) at 300°C to 900°C, comprising complex organic and inorganic (particularly heavy metals) species formed from heterogeneous chemical reactions. Based on different advanced material analyses, that is, Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, this study revealed that mass loss and microstructural changes of LSDBs occurred primarily due to decomposition of volatiles, aromatic rings, carbonates, and hydroxides. The leaching behaviors of heavy metals from LSDBs were evaluated using the Synthetic Precipitation Leaching Procedure (SPLP). The final pH in SPLP increased from 7.5 to 12.5 with pyrolysis temperature. The pH increase favored the retention of heavy metals in the LSDBs due to the formation of low soluble precipitates at alkaline pH. The heavy metals and metalloids in the LSDBs were present as surface precipitates due to precipitation and cation exchange rather than surface complexation. The leaching contents of metals and metalloids, such as Cr, Cd, Ni, Pb, and As, were all below their respective maximum discharge standards for the first priority pollutants in China. PRACTITIONER POINTS: The pH increase favored the retention of heavy metals in the leachate sludge-derived biochar (LSDB). The heavy metals in the LSDB were present as surface precipitates due to precipitation and cation exchange rather than surface complexation. The heavy metals/metalloids concentration of LSDB (>600°C) in leachate was low and was likely safe for use.

Climate change induces biotic and abiotic stress conditions, which badly affect the yield of crops with leading to the biochemical and physiological damages to plants. Biochar and plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) alleviate the effect of drought condition therefore a field study was conducted to examine the single and combine application of drought tolerant Pseudomonas sp. and Staphylococcus sp. with biochar of Morus alba L. wood to mitigate the adverse effects of drought stress in two genotypes of Brassica napus L. including Punjab sarson and westar. Physioco-chemical analysis of biochar showed 5.4 cmol/kg cation exchange capacity, 6.9 ds/m electrical conductivity, pH of 9.6, 0.50 g/cm3 bulk density, and organic carbon 3.64%. Synergistic application of PGPR and biochar developed the plant antioxidant enzyme including catalase (CAT) and ascorbate peroxidase (APX) and also enhanced the content of photosynthetic pigments like chlorophyll pigments, carotenoids content, and anthocyanin content. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) study revealed that biochar and PGPR improved epidermal vigor and stomatal physiology. Malondialdehyde (MDA), hydrogen peroxide (H2 O2 ), APX, and osmolyte content including proline increased in drought stress, which were then decreased by these growth promoters. These results are very important as they illustrate the potential of PGPR and biochar to alleviate the adverse consequences of drought stress and offer a way of increasing the tolerance of B. napus L. plant grown under induced drought stress.

The application of activated carbon (AC) to the surface of contaminated sediments is a promising technology for sediment remediation in situ. Amendment with AC has proved to be effective in reducing bioavailability and sediment-to-water release of hydrophobic organic contaminants. However, AC may cause positive or negative biological responses in benthic organisms. The causes of these effects, which include changes in growth, reproduction, and mortality, are unclear but are thought to be related to the size of AC particles. The present study investigated biological response to AC ranging from ingestible powdered AC to noningestible granular AC in two benthic deposit feeders: the polychaete Marenzelleria spp. and the clam Limecola balthica (syn. Macoma balthica). In the polychaete, exposure to powdered AC (ingestible) reduced both dry weight and carbon assimilation, whereas exposure to granular AC (noningestible) increased both dry weight and carbon assimilation. Responses in the clam were similar but less pronounced, indicating that response levels are species-specific and may vary within a benthic community. In addition, worms exposed to the finest ingestible AC particles had reduced gut microvilli length and reduced gut lumen, indicating starvation. These results strongly suggest that biological responses to AC depend on particle ingestibility, whereby exposure to ingestible particles may cause starvation through reduced bioavailability of food coingested with AC or due to rejection of AC-treated sediment as a food source. The field of gold catalysis has been in constant expansion during the last twenty years. Based on the precept of π-activation of unsaturated simple substrates, several new rearrangements have been discovered, implying aryl, alkyne, alkene or keto derivatives as key partners. In this personal account, the main contributions in the field of gold catalysis from our group will be highlighted, emphasizing the recent reports, starting from 1,6- and 1,5-enynes and then moving to keto-ynes derivatives. The gold-catalyzed reactions will be presented starting from classical skeletal rearrangements (cycloisomerization) and then domino processes. In each part, the presentation of asymmetric versions will be highlighted.

Background Soil fumigants-the most effective agrochemicals for managing soil-borne diseases-have been extensively used. However, high volatility, moderate toxicity, and insufficient effective duration considerably limit their application. In the present study, a combination of modified biochar and polyurea microcapsules (MCs) via interface polymerization to co-encapsulate allyl isothiocyanate (AITC) was developed as a model fumigant for controlled release (AITC@BC-MCs). Results The physical characteristics of biochar modified by sand milling were significantly improved. In addition, chemical properties and morphological features of AITC@BC-MCs characterized by integrated methods revealed successful preparation of BC-MCs. Compared with monolayer MCs, BC-MCs could significantly delay AITC release due to the composite obstruction effect. Moreover, modified biochar endowed the cargo molecules with a pH-responsive release property. Additionally, this composite showed a longer persistent duration by prolonging AITC degradation half-life, which was 3.2-3.5 times that of the AITC technical concentrate under different soil conditions. Finally, the control efficacy of AITC@BC-MC against pathogens, including nematodes and fungi, as well as against weeds was significantly enhanced at the same dose, but it did not inhibit seed germination and growth after 10 days when fumigated soil was aerated. Conclusion Construction of a composite encapsulation system enhanced pesticide efficacy, reduced dose via controlled release, and delayed fumigant degradation in soil, indicating the great potential of this strategy for developing an effective and environmentally friendly fumigant formulation. Perilla seed oil (PSO) has a special aromatic odor, which is unpleasant to the personal preferences of some consumers. To this end, this article evaluated the differences in volatile organic compounds (VOCs), physicochemical characteristics, and fatty acid composition of PSO treated with ethanol (PSO-EA), activated carbon (PSO-AC), and activated kaolin (PSO-AK). The results showed that in the PSO, PSO-EA, PSO-AC, and PSO-AK samples, the content of linolenic acid, oleic acid, and linoleic acid hardly changed. Among the physicochemical characteristics of the four samples, the color difference between PSO and PSO-EA was greater than the color difference between PSO and PSO-AC, PSO-AK. The three treatment methods had the greatest impact on the PSO peroxide value but had little effect on other indicators. Gas chromatography-ion mobility spectrum results identified 28 known volatiles, of which aldehydes, alkenals, alcohols, ketones, and esters were the main groups. Fingerprint analysis found that PSO had an aromatic odor, which includes 1-hexanol, hexanal, and 2-pentylfuran; the removal effect of ethanol on VOCs in PSO was better than that of activated carbon and activated kaolin. The difference between the four oil samples was found from the strength of the VOCs' signals in a two-dimensional map. From the principal components analysis and the "nearest neighbor" fingerprint analysis, it was found that PSO is generally quite different from PSO-EA, PSO-AC, and PSO-AK, while in the "nearest neighbor" fingerprint analysis, PSO-AC and PSO-AK are similar in general. In short, PSO will have better applications in the food field. PRACTICAL APPLICATION: Treatment of PSO with ethanol, activated carbon, and activated kaolin is conducive to the comprehensive utilization of edible resources. In this work, ethanol, activated carbon, and activated kaolin were used to remove VOCs in PSO, and PSO-EA, PSO-AC, and PSO-AK were obtained. The perilla seed oil after these three treatment methods was tested for VOCs, physicochemical characteristics, and fatty acid composition. They can meet the needs of more consumers without affecting the fatty acid composition in the PSO, and have broad development prospects.

Invasive plants can change soil properties resulting in improved growth. Although invaders are known to alter soil chemistry, it remains unclear if chemicals secreted by roots facilitate invasive plant-soil mutualisms. With up to 19 confamilial pairs of invasive and native plants, and most of which were congeners, we explored the root exudate-induced changes in plant-arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungal mutualisms. We found that, relative to natives, invaders had greater AM colonization, greater biomass and their root exudates contained higher concentrations of two common chemical signals - quercetin and strigolactones - which are known to stimulate AM fungal growth and root colonization. An exudate exchange experiment showed that root exudates from invaders increased AM colonization more than exudates from natives. However, application of activated carbon led to greater reduction in AM colonization and plant biomass for invaders than natives, suggesting stronger effects of chemical signals in root exudates from invaders. We show that nonnative plants promote interactions with soil mutualists via enhancing root exudate chemicals, which could have important implications for invasion success.

Biochar amendment has been proposed as a promising means to increase carbon (C) sequestration and simultaneously benefit plant productivity. However, quantifying the assimilation and dynamics of photosynthetic C in plant-soil systems under biochar addition remains elusive. This study established two experimental factors involving biochar addition and nitrogen (N) fertilization to quantitatively assess the effect of biochar on photosynthetic C fate in a rice plant-soil system. The rice plants and soil samples were collected and analyzed after 6-h pulse labeling with 13 CO2 at the tillering, jointing, heading and ripening stages. Biochar did not affect the proportions of photoassimilated carbon-13 (13 C) allocations in plant-soil systems. Nevertheless, biochar enhanced the 13 C contents in the shoot, root, and soil pools, especially when combined with N fertilization, and biochar increased the cumulative assimilated 13 C contents in the shoot, root, and soil pools by 23%, 14% and 20%, respectively, throughout the whole growth stage. Moreover, biochar addition significantly enhanced the N use efficiency (NUE) by c. 23% at the heading and ripening stages. In summary, biochar increases the content of photoassimilated C in plant-soil systems by improving plant productivity via enhancing NUE, thus resulting in a higher soil C sequestration potential.

The benefit of biochar as a soil fertility enhancer is well known and has been broadly investigated. Equally, many tropical and subtropical countries use wastewater for irrigation in urban agriculture. To assess the related health risks, we determined pathogen and heavy metal fate associated with biochar application and wastewater irrigation in the urban agriculture of northern Ghana. Rice (Oryza L.) husk biochar (20 t ha−1), N–P–K 15–15–15 fertilizer (212.5 kg ha−1), and their combinations were evaluated in a field‐based experiment. Untreated wastewater and tap water served as irrigation water. Red amaranth (Amaranthus cruentus L.) was used as a test crop and was grown in wet (WS) and dry (DS) cropping seasons. Irrigation water, soil, and vegetables were analyzed for heavy metals, Escherichia coli, fecal coliform, helminth eggs, and Salmonella spp. Unlike the pathogens, analyzed heavy metals from irrigation water and soil were below the FAO/WHO permissible standard for agricultural activities. Wastewater irrigation caused E. coli concentrations ranging from 0.5 to 0.6 (WS) and from 0.7 to 0.8 (DS) log10 colony forming units per gram fresh weight (CFU gFW−1) on vegetables and from 1.7 to 2.1 (WS) and from 0.6 to 1.0 (DS) log10CFU per gram dry weight (gDW−1) in soil. Average log10CFU gFW−1 rates of 6.19 and 3.44 fecal coliform were found on vegetables, whereas in soil, 4.26 and 4.58 log10CFU gDW−1 were observed in WS and DS, respectively. Helminth egg populations were high in wastewater and were transferred to the crops and soil. Biochar did not affect bacteria contamination. Wood-to-charcoal is crucial in developing new materials at the lab-scale for relevant applications, such as pollutant removal from water. Unfortunately, laboratory carbonization methods are costly and produce charcoal on the gram-scale. This work presents a simple-to-build and simple-to-operate home-made kiln that carbonizes Eucalyptus wood chips (yield of 30 ± 1%) and produces charcoal on the 200-gram scale. Solid particles had the typical structure, composition, and chemical behavior of charcoal obtained from wood. We believe that his carbonization process eases the charcoal synthesis required for the development of new charcoal-based materials.

Biochar soil amendment may provide the forestry sector with a formidable tool to simultaneously sequester carbon (C) in the soil and aboveground by enhancing plant productivity, yet several key uncertainties remain. Crucially, empirical evidence of long‐term effects of biochar management on vegetation and on greenhouse gas emissions in forest ecosystems is scarce. Using a large field experiment in a young managed boreal forest in northern Sweden, we investigated the effects of biochar (applied either on the soil surface or mixed in the soil 8–9 years prior to this study) on supply rates of soil nutrients, on survival and growth of planted Pinus sylvestris, on community composition of the understory vegetation, and on forest floor fluxes of N2O, CH4, and CO2. We found that biochar promoted P. sylvestris survival only when biochar was applied on the soil surface. Conversely, biochar enhanced P. sylvestris growth overall, resulting in a 19% increase in C stored in biomass. Biochar also altered the composition of the understory vegetation, especially when mixed into the soil, and promoted a more resource‐conservative community (i.e., with more ericaceous shrubs and less graminoids and forbs). Meanwhile, supply rates of the main soil nutrients were largely unaffected by biochar. Finally, we found that biochar did not alter overall N2O and CO2 emissions and CH4 uptake from the forest floor. Our findings show that biochar amendment increased the net C input to the system, since, besides directly increasing soil C stocks, biochar enhanced biomass growth without increasing soil C losses. Therefore, our study suggests that biochar could potentially be used for emissions abatement in intensively managed boreal forests.

Drought is a persistent and complex natural vulnerability whose rate and extent of recurrence are expected to increase with climate change. Regardless of the progress made in responding and adapting to water scarcity, drought stress causes severe afflictions. Therefore, the present study has been accomplished in Department of Botany, University of Peshawar to investigate the effect of biochar and plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) Cellulomonas pakistanensis (NCCP11) and Sphingobacterium pakistanensis (NCCP246) on Vicia faba under drought stress. Two varieties of seeds Desi (V1) and Pulista (V2) were obtained from Cereal Crop Research Institute (CCRI) Nowshera, sown in earthen pots in triplicate filled with 3 kg soil and sand (2:1) and biochar (0 and 5% w/w). Scanning electron microscopy of biochar showed porous nature and energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy spectroscopy showed C, Ca, Mg, and Na elemental composition. Germination parameters including germination energy (GE), Timson germination index (TGI), germination index (GI), and water use efficiency (WUE) were amplified to 28.04, 19.17, 25.72, and 43.62% in V1, respectively, and 14.38, 16.66, 19.79, and 41.50% in V2 respectively, by the co-application of biochar and PGPR. Agronomical attributes including, fresh and dry weight of leaves, root, and shoot were significantly reduced, which were positively ameliorated by 28.57, 36.36, 16, 10.47, 14.28, and 10%, respectively, by the application of biochar and PGPR especially by NCCP246 in combination as well as individually. It has been concluded that, adversities of drought significantly condensed with the application of biochar and PGPR, which may be important in agricultural practices carried out in water-deficient regions.

Researchers are trying to tackle water scarcity in numerous ways. One of those ways is the use of nanotechnology in water processing and purification. The current work involves the fabrication and optimization of activated carbon and graphene-based hybrid water purification system. Five different concentrations of methylene blue and deionized water (DI) dye solutions were used, and they were filtered in three different cycles. For the potential usage on the consumer side, a small-scale, low-cost water filter is developed using activated carbon, commercial filter paper, and graphene nanoplatelets. The filter paper is used to hold mixtures of the activated carbon and graphene nanoplatelets within the water filter. The conductivity, TDS, and pH are measured for the feed water and the processed water using an Oakton EcoTestr and Apera Instruments PH60 Premium Pocket pH meter, respectively. A UV-Vis spectrometer is used to measure the absorption of solutions. The distribution and adsorption of the dye particles were observed by scanning electron microscopy. PRACTITIONER POINTS: These results show the effectiveness of the system in the removal of dye particles above a given particle size. The concentration of the dye solution decreased after every cycle. The GnPs filtration system more effectively dye particles as compared to the filtration system containing only Activated carbon. UV-Vis spectroscopy results showed that the methylene blue dye particles decreased after every cycle. This research can open a broad area of projects toward waste/wastewater practice for particles above a certain particle size.

During gasification and/or pyrolysis of wooden biomass, charcoal is formed as a solid intermediate or product. In CO2- and H2O-rich atmospheres at high temperatures, a high specific surface area of several 100 m2 per gram of charcoal may be reached. Common biomass gasifiers aim at a charcoal conversion of 100 %. Up to now, the option of a subsequent usage of the charcoal for adsorption of tar compounds has rarely been considered but is an interesting option to produce a clean syngas in a downstream adsorption unit. Experimental studies show an adsorption capacity of up to 0.4 g of tar per gram of charcoal using naphthalene as a model substance for tar. Respective adsorption isotherms, breakthrough curves in a fixed-bed adsorber, and a kinetic breakthrough model are presented.

A phosphorus removal biochar adsorbent was prepared from Fenton sludge. The adsorption process was optimized, and its phosphorus adsorption mechanism was discussed. It was found that the phosphorus adsorption performance of biochar prepared from single Fenton sludge (FBC-400) was better than that of co-pyrolysis of Fenton sludge and bamboo powder. The optimum condition was that Fenton sludge pyrolyzed at 400°C (FBC-400). FBC-400 had a larger specific surface area than that prepared by co-pyrolysis with bamboo powder. And the high content of iron element could provide a higher surface charge of the biochar, thereby increasing the electrostatic adsorption of phosphorus onto FBC-400. The phosphorus adsorption was highly pH dependent by FBC-400, which can enhance electrostatic adsorption and increase adsorption capacity in acidic conditions. A randomized, Latin-square crossover, open-label trial with 2 substudies in 18 and 24 healthy volunteers evaluated the pharmacokinetic (PK) bioequivalence of warfarin, a drug with a narrow therapeutic index (NTI), and clonazepam, both widely used for the treatment of chronic conditions, with or without coadministration of DAV132 7.5 g. PK parameters observed with single doses of 5 mg warfarin and 1 mg clonazepam when administered alone did not differ with the PK parameters when administered concomitantly with or 1 hour before DAV132. Geometric mean ratios (GMRs) for S-warfarin, R-warfarin, and clonazepam Cmax were 102.0, 102.8, and 91.9, respectively, after concomitant administration and 106.5, 107.5, and 95.0, respectively, when administered 1 hour before DAV132. After concomitant administration, GMRs for S-warfarin, R-warfarin, and clonazepam AUClast were 100.5, 100.2, and 94.9, respectively, and 101.9, 101.8, and 101.3, respectively, when administered 1 hour before DAV132. All GMR 90% confidence intervals fell within the prespecified 80% to 125% limit for bioequivalence, indicating a lack of drug-drug interaction. In conclusion, DAV132 did not affect the systemic exposure of 2 NTI drugs absorbed in the proximal intestine.

Textile wastewater purification is a challenging process. Conventional wastewater treatment methods either lack in efficiency, cost-effectiveness or leads to the generation of secondary pollutants. Additionally, some treatment methods are time-consuming. The research presented in the manuscript is a blend of filtration, biosorption, aeration, solar energy-assisted electrolytic precipitation, pH balance, and germicidal treatments with an aim of reducing the suspended solids, intense color, odor, pH, chemical oxygen demand (COD), total dissolved solids (TDS), electrical conductivity (EC), and heavy metal content of textile effluent. Use of environmentally sustainable surface activated biosorbents derived from waste weeds Water Hyacinth (WH) and Parthenium Hysterophorus (PH) as an alternative to commercial grade Activated Charcoal (AC), comparison of adsorption capacities of proposed adsorbents against AC for effluent decolorization, the application of solar energy to run an electrolytic precipitator, and the unique sequential design of various unit processes like coarse and fine filtration, biosorption, aeration, electrolytic precipitation, pH treatment and germicidal UV-C treatment to treat the effluent are some of the novel methodologies explored in the present study. The invented process provides almost completely decolorized (about 90%-94%), particle-free and odorless treated water, with the acceptable levels of heavy metals (Lead-not detected, Arsenic-not detected, Zinc-0.5-0.8 mg/L), TDS (1,500-1,850 mg/L), COD (149-169 mg/L) pH (7.1-7.15), and EC (2.5-2.8 mMhos/cm) as some of the important parameters, fitting well within the standard pollution limits. Performance efficiency estimation and statistical modeling were done for the data using the t test and f test. The values obtained were (t = 2.78 and f = 4.99 for treated WH against AC) and (t = 3.00 and f = 5.38 for treated PH against AC at 0.05 level of significance) as an essential part of the manuscript, proving the supremacy of the proposed process to achieve the standard pollution norms. Cost-effectiveness was an integral factor addressed in the proposed design, recorded a 1.7 USD per 1,000 L of input effluent, which was well below than most of the reported studies. The invented method in the present investigation thus provides an integrated, efficient, eco-friendly, and cost-effective solution to wastewater treatment. PRACTITIONER POINTS: Effluent decolorization is about 68% in comparison with conventional activated carbon. The adsorbent was found to be three times more active than activated carbon. COD value decreased from 2,352 mg/L to about 150 mg/L on treatment with the novel adsorbent.

We summarize current knowledge about the ecosystem functions of fire-produced charcoal in boreal forests with a special focus on its effects on soil carbon, nitrogen and phosphorous dynamics as well as on plant succession. Charcoal is a carbon-enriched material with a highly aromatic and porous structure. Charcoal is highly resistant to microbial decomposition and thus remains in soil for thousands of years, providing recalcitrant carbon to boreal forest soils. The abundant pores in and on charcoal surfaces have powerful adsorption abilities that can influence biogeochemical cycles and plant succession after fire. Our review details the influence of charcoal on plant and soil systems and explains the complex direct and indirect pathways of these influences that occur during succession after fires in boreal ecosystems. Among these pathways, the most important pathway through which charcoal influences plant and soil systems relates to the element composition and nutrient availability in soils and to the abundance of phenolics released fromEricaceaeplants in the understory of boreal forests. We found a strong bias in the studied processes towards nutrient mineralization rather than immobilization, which suggests that it is risky to draw general conclusions about the influence of charcoal on soil nutrient dynamics. Last, the latest studies shed light on the enhancement of litter and humus decomposition by charcoal, given the possibility that charcoal accelerates CO(2)release in a postfire forest. This review suggests comparative studies that are necessary to test the context-dependency of charcoal functions across a variety of boreal forest ecosystems.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are now thought to be far more prevalent in water bodies across the globe than previously reported. In particular, military bases, airports, and industrial sites are prone to contamination caused by runoff discharges from fire-extinguishing waters that contain PFAS such as aqueous film-forming foams (AFFF). These substances and their metabolites show a high degree of mobility as well as a low biotic and abiotic degradability; as a result, they are bioaccumulative and often migrate among the environmental compartments in addition to being toxic. As of now, there is no suitable end-of-life treatment process that is both technologically efficient and cost-effective for the handling of PFAS. Currently, the incineration of the collected extinguishing water at temperatures above 1100 °C is the recommended method for the disposal of PFAS to degrade material compounds. However, this method consumes extensive energy because it requires incineration of large quantities of water to treat a diluted fraction of PFAS. Aside from incineration, adsorption of PFAS on granulated activated carbon is one of the most widely used technologies, albeit with poor adsorption and often requiring very large downstream filtration systems. Finally, the application of functional precipitation agents using commercially available cationic surfactants is a novel approach (PerfluorAd® [Cornelsen] process) that enables the effective precipitation of PFAS from the spent fire-extinguishing waters. Hence, the goal of the present study was to investigate the environmental impacts emanating from the proper treatment of spent fire-extinguishing water with the aforementioned 3 end-of-life treatment scenarios. A life cycle assessment was conducted for this purpose. The results show that the PerfluorAd process outperforms the other 2 treatment technologies across all environmental impact categories except for ozone depletion. Archaeological Dark Earth soil is a category of archaeological anthrosols that has gained much attention because it exhibits higher nutrient content and organic matter stocks and a characteristic dark colour, and enables higher crop yields in comparison to neighbouring soil. However, much is unknown about the chemical properties of Archaeological Dark Earth soils in Central Europe. Therefore, we studied a European Dark Earth (EDE) soil, a type of Archaeological Dark Earth soil, in the territory of the early medieval Dřevic hillfort, Czech Republic, aiming to compare the chemical properties of EDE with a control soil unaffected by settlement activities. The black colour of EDE soil contrasted highly with the light grey Cambisol of the control. Soil reaction and total element contents (N, P, Ca, Mn, Fe, Al, Cu, Zn, Sr and Rb) were substantially larger in the EDE soil compared with the control and vice versa in the case of the C/N ratio. Also, the content of plant‐available (Mehlich III) P, Ca, K and Mg was larger in the EDE soil than the control. In contrast to Ca, plant‐available and total P and K were not well correlated. Total element contents are highly suitable for geoarchaeological purposes as enrichment factors can be easily calculated. The increased contents of these elements, together with pieces of charcoal visible in the EDE soil, indicate the deposition of organic waste and biomass ash during the existence of the hillfort. Thus, medieval hillforts can represent extraordinary nutrient‐rich islands in the cultural landscape of Central Europe. The chemical signatures generated by past settlement activities are so intense that they cannot easily be masked by short‐term intensive application of mineral fertilizers. HIGHLIGHTS: Settlement activities increased soil pH and the content of anthropogenic elements. Enrichment by P, Ca, Mn, Fe, Al, Zn, Cu, Sr and Rb may indicate settlement activities. Analysis of total element contents is suitable for geoarchaeological purposes. Application of mineral fertilizers cannot easily mask signatures of medieval settlement activities.

We aimed to review the interfering effect of DOACs on tests for haemostatic function and then to discuss overcoming these with activated carbon (AC) products, thereby eliminating DOAC issues from test plasmas. Recent relevant articles were reviewed and are discussed. Laboratory tests for DOACs, lupus anticoagulant, factor assays and APC Resistance were carried out in such publications with and without an AC product on various instruments using reagents approved for diagnostic use in well-regulated clinical laboratories. All reports on this plasma pre-treatment by AC products agree that they extract DOACs from plasma samples with minimal effect on underlying clotting tests. The specific extraction of DOACs significantly reduced false positive lupus anticoagulant detection and provided more reliable results in clotting factor assays, APC resistance and other thrombophilia tests. Dabigatran and edoxaban seem to be adsorbed more thoroughly by AC from plasmas than rivaroxaban and apixaban. In summary, most of the AC products reviewed here appear to remove DOACs from test plasmas without significantly affecting underlying clotting tests and permit correct diagnosis of various haemostatic conditions despite the initial presence of DOACs. The application of such agents as a sample pre-treatment to overcome the effects of DOACs for routine coagulation testing is supported by the emerging literature.
