Abstract

In a previous study we demonstrated greater abundance of the parasitoid Anagrus epos (Girault) in grape vineyards located downwind of prune trees that function as overwintering habitats. This study examines whether these higher A. epos numbers translated into higher egg parasitism rates of the grape leafhopper, Erythroneura elegantula (Osborn). Paired commercial wine-grape vineyard plots, one with and one without adjacent prune trees, were studied within a complete block design in northern and central California. A. epos was the key mortality factor affecting E. elegantula eggs. Point estimates of A. epos parasitism rates were significantly greater in vineyards associated with prune trees during the first E. elegantula generation in both 1991 and 1992. No consistent differences in parasitism rates were observed during the second or third generations. The results indicated that prune trees enhance early season parasitism rates. Cumulative estimates of egg parasitism across E. elegantula generations demonstrated that enhanced early-season parasitism resulted in a net season-long increase in the degree of mortality imposed by A. epos on E. elegantula eggs. Two factors were found to influence parasitism rates: the abundance of early-season A. epos adults moving into vineyards and the density of E. elegantula eggs in vineyards. Our results indicate that diversification of vineyards using prune trees supports overwintering populations of a specialist parasitoid and thereby alters host-parasitoid interactions to favor enhanced parasitism in vineyards.

4. Disc heating: comparing the Milky Way with cosmological simulations

Abstract

We present an analysis of a suite of simulations run with different particle- and grid-based cosmological hydrodynamical codes and compare them with observational data of the Milky Way. This is the first study to make comparisons of properties of galaxies simulated with particle- and grid-based codes. Our analysis indicates that there is broad agreement between these different modelling techniques. We study the velocity dispersion–age relation for disc stars at z= 0 and find that four of the simulations are more consistent with observations by Holmberg, Nordstroem & Andersen in which the stellar disc appears to undergo continual/secular heating. Two other simulations are in better agreement with the Quillen & Garnett observations that suggest ‘saturation’ in the heating profile for young stars in the disc. None of the simulations has thin discs as old as that of the Milky Way. We also analyse the kinematics of disc stars at the time of their birth for different epochs in the galaxies’ evolution and find that in some simulations old stars are born cold within the disc and are subsequently heated, while other simulations possess old stellar populations which are born relatively hot. The models which are in better agreement with observations of the Milky Way’s stellar disc undergo significantly lower minor-merger/assembly activity after the last major merger, that is, once the disc has formed. All of the simulations are significantly ‘hotter’ than the Milky Way disc; on top of the effects of mergers, we find a ‘floor’ in the dispersion that is related to the underlying treatment of the heating and cooling of the interstellar medium, and the low density threshold which such codes use for star formation. This finding has important implications for all studies of disc heating that use hydrodynamical codes.

5. The origin of the light distribution in spiral galaxies

Abstract

We analyse a high-resolution, fully cosmological, hydrodynamical disc galaxy simulation, to study the source of the double-exponential light profiles seen in many stellar discs, and the effects of stellar radial migration upon the spatiotemporal evolution of both the disc age and metallicity distributions. We find a ‘break’ in the pure exponential stellar surface brightness profile, and trace its origin to a sharp decrease in the star formation per unit surface area, itself produced by a decrease in the gas volume density due to a warping of the gas disc. Star formation in the disc continues well beyond the break. We find that the break is more pronounced in bluer wavebands. By contrast, we find little or no break in the mass density profile. This is, in part, due to the net radial migration of stars towards the external parts of the disc. Beyond the break radius, we find that ∼60 per cent of the resident stars migrated from the inner disc, while ∼25 per cent formed in situ. Our simulated galaxy also has a minimum in the age profile at the break radius but, in disagreement with some previous studies, migration is not the main mechanism producing this shape. In our simulation, the disc metallicity gradient flattens with time, consistent with an ‘inside-out’ formation scenario. We do not find any difference in the intensity or the position of the break with inclination, suggesting that perhaps the differences found in empirical studies are driven by dust extinction.
