Land application of manure can exacerbate nutrient and contaminant transfers to the aquatic environment. This study examined the effect of injecting a dairy cattle (Bostaurus L.) manure slurry on mobilization and leaching of dissolved, nonreactive slurry components across a range of agricultural soils. We compared leaching of slurry-applied bromide through intact soil columns (20 cm diam., 20 cm high) of differing textures following surface application or injection of slurry. The volumetric fraction of soil pores >30 microm ranged from 43% in a loamy sand to 28% in a sandy loam and 15% in a loam-textured soil. Smaller active flow volumes and higher proportions of preferential flow were observed with increasing soil clay content. Injection of slurry in the loam soil significantly enhanced diffusion of applied bromide into the large fraction of small pores compared with surface application. The resulting physical protection against leaching of bromide was reflected by 60.2% of the bromide tracer was recovered in the effluent after injection, compared with 80.6% recovery after surface application. No effect of slurry injection was observed in the loamy sand and sandy loam soils. Our findings point to soil texture as an important factor influencing leaching of dissolved, nonreactive slurry components in soils amended with manure slurry.

Trihalomethane (THM) precursors are a significant problem in the San Joaquin River (SJR) watershed, an important source of drinking water for >20 million people. Trihalomethane precursors diminish drinking water quality and are formed during natural decomposition of organic matter in aquatic systems. This study sought to identify sources of chlorine-reactive dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in the SJR watershed and to determine if wetlands were more important sources of THM precursors than nearby rivers and agricultural drains. The effects of biodegradation on DOC quality and quantity were investigated and analyzed across drainage type. Results show wetland drainage contained comparable bromide concentrations and organic carbon aromaticity but contained more than two times the average DOC concentrations found in agricultural drains and rivers. Wetland DOC did not have an increased propensity to form THMs when compared with the other drainage types, despite significantly higher wetland formation potentials. The higher formation potentials measured in wetland drainages were attributed to higher DOC concentrations; the positive correlation found between DOC and trihalomethane formation potentials (THMFPs) and the significantly higher wetland DOC concentrations suggest that increased wetland restoration could result in increased THMFPs in the SJR watershed. Wetland THM precursors were more resistant to biodegradation than THM precursors from agricultural and river samples. Results suggest that THM precursors in the SJR were from algae and were biodegraded.

The naturally occurring hormones, such as 17-beta-estradiol, 17-alpha-estradiol, and estrone, present in livestock manure may have detrimental environmental effects if released into surface waters. In areas where manure application is intensive, estrogens have been found in surface waters in concentrations known to affect the endocrine system of fish and amphibians. How the estrogens reach the surface waters is unclear. To investigate whether leaching through the soil profile plays a significant role, we conducted leaching experiments on intact soil cores. Lysimeter soil monoliths (60 cm in diameter and 100 cm long) were excavated from two sites in Denmark (one loamy and one sandy soil). The soil monoliths were treated with pig slurry containing estrogenic hormones and amended with an estrogen tracer (17-alpha-ethinylestradiol) and a conservative tracer (bromide). 17-alpha-ethinylestradiol is a synthetic analog of 17-beta-estradiol with sorption characteristics and molecular structure similar to those of the naturally occurring estrogens in slurry. The monoliths were exposed to a short-term irrigation event (12 h) followed by a long-term semi-field experiment (16 wk), during which leaching of natural estrogens and tracers was followed. Estrogens from slurry were transported to a depth of 1 m in loamy soil and sandy soil. The estrogen concentrations in the leachate were at a level known to affect the endocrine system of aquatic organisms.

Transport of Cryptosporidium parvum through macroporous soils is poorly understood yet critical for assessing the risk of groundwater contamination. We developed a conceptual model of the physics of flow and transport in packed, tilted, and vegetated soilboxes during and immediately after a simulated rainfall event and applied it to 54 experiments implemented with different soils, slopes, and rainfall rates. Using a parsimonious inverse modeling procedure, we show that a significant amount of subsurface outflow from the soilboxes is due to macropore flow. The effective hydraulic properties of the macropore space were obtained by calibration of a simple two-domain flow and transport model that accounts for coupled flow in the matrix and in the macropores of the soils. Using linear mixed-effects analysis, macropore hydraulic properties and oocyst attenuation were shown to be associated with soil bulk density and rainfall rate. Macropore flow was shown to be responsible for bromide and C. parvum transport through the soil into the underlying pore space observed during the 4-h experiments. We confirmed this finding by conducting a pair of saturated soil column studies under homogeneously repacked conditions with no macropores in which no C. parvum transport was observed in the effluent. The linear mixed-effects and logistic regression models developed from the soilbox experiments provide a basis for estimating macropore hydraulic properties and the risk of C. parvum transport through shallow soils from bulk density, precipitation, and total shallow subsurface flow rate. The risk assessment is consistent with the reported occurrence of oocysts in springs or groundwater from fractured or karstic rocks protected only by shallow overlying soils.

Despite the concern raised by the detections of veterinary antibiotics like sulfonamides (SA) in the environment, their fate in soils is still not sufficiently understood. In a previous article, we demonstrated that manure may substantially influence losses of SA via runoff from soils. Here, we report on the effect of manure on SA availability in soil pore water. Three sulfonamides (sulfadimidine, sulfadiazine, sulfathiazole) and two tracers (bromide and Brilliant Blue) were either applied in manure or as aqueous solution on grassland plots. After 1 and 3 d contact time, the plots were irrigated with deionized water. One day after irrigation, soil cores were taken and profiles of pore water concentrations were determined. The median SA concentrations of the top layer on manured plots varied between 40 and 60 microg L(-1) and between 10 and 30 microg L(-1) on the controls. For the conservative tracer Br the mass recovery was about 60 to 75% and much lower for the SA (2 to 14%). Apparent distribution coefficients K(d,app) of the SA in the topsoil ranged between 3 and 15 L kg(-1) on the manured plots and between 30 to 35 kg L(-1) on the controls. Below the top layer, the concentration distribution showed a pattern typical for preferential flow. Locally, SA concentrations down to 30- to 50-cm depth were as high as in the top 5 cm with little effect of the two application matrices. In the topmost layer, the data indicate that 10 to 25% of sulfadimidine were transformed to its acetyl-metabolite.

Dual-permeability models have been developed to account for the significant effects of macropore flow on contaminant transport, but their use is hampered by difficulties in estimating the additional parameters required. Therefore, our objective was to evaluate data requirements for parameter identification for predictive modeling with the dual-permeability model MACRO. Two different approaches were compared: sequential uncertainty fitting (SUFI) and generalized likelihood uncertainty estimation (GLUE). We investigated six parameters controlling macropore flow and pesticide sorption and degradation, applying MACRO to a comprehensive field data set of bromide andbentazone [3-isopropyl-1H-2,1,3-benzothiadiazin-4(3H)-one-2,2dioxide] transport in a structured soil. The GLUE analyses of parameter conditioning for different combinations of observations showed that both resident and flux concentrations were needed to obtain highly conditioned and unbiased parameters and that observations of tracer transport generally improved the conditioning of macropore flow parameters. The GLUE "behavioral" parameter sets covered wider parameter ranges than the SUFI posterior uncertainty domains. Nevertheless, estimation uncertainty ranges defined by the 5th and 95th percentiles were similar and many simulations randomly sampled from the SUFI posterior uncertainty domains had negative model efficiencies (minimum of -3.2). This is because parameter correlations are neglected in SUFI and the posterior uncertainty domains were not always determined correctly. For the same reasons, uncertainty ranges for predictions of bentazone losses through drainflow for good agricultural practice in southern Sweden were 27% larger for SUFI compared with GLUE. Although SUFI proved to be an efficient parameter estimation tool, GLUE seems better suited as a method of uncertainty estimation for predictions.

Macropore flow results in the rapid movement of pesticides to subsurface drains, which may be caused in part by a small portion of macropores directly connected to drains. However, current models fail to account for this direct connection. This research investigated the interrelationship between macropore flow and subsurface drainage on conservative solute and pesticide transport using the Root Zone Water Quality Model (RZWQM). Potassium bromide tracer and isoxaflutole, the active ingredient in BALANCE herbicide [(5-cyclopropyl-4-isoxazolyl) [2(methylsulfonyl)-4-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl] methanone], with average half-life of 1.7 d were applied to a 30.4-ha Indiana corn (Zea mays L.) field. Water flow and chemical concentrations emanating from the drains were measured from two samplers. Model predictions of drain flow after minimal calibration reasonably matched observations (slope = 1.03, intercept = 0.01, and R(2) = 0.75). Without direct hydraulic connection of macropores to drains, RZWQM under predicted bromide and isoxaflutole concentration during the first measured peak after application (e.g., observed isoxaflutole concentration was between 1.2 and 1.4 mug L(-1), RZWQM concentration was 0.1 mug L(-1)). This research modified RZWQM to include an express fraction relating the percentage of macropores in direct hydraulic connection to drains. The modified model captured the first measured peak in bromide and isoxaflutole concentrations using an express fraction of 2% (e.g., simulated isoxaflutole concentration increased to 1.7 mug L(-1)). The RZWQM modified to include a macropore express fraction more accurately simulates chemical movement through macropores to subsurface drains. An express fraction is required to match peak concentrations in subsurface drains shortly after chemical applications.

Leaching to ground water and tile drains are important parts of the environmental assessment of pesticides. The aims of the present study were to (i) assess the significance of preferential flow for pesticide leaching under realistic worst-case conditions for Dutch agriculture (soil profile with thick clay layer and high rainfall) and (ii) collect a high-quality data set that is suitable for testing pesticide leaching models. The movement of water, bromide, and the pesticides bentazon [3-isopropyl-1H-2, 1,3-benzothiadiazine-4(3H)-one-2,2-dioxide] and imidacloprid [1-[(6-chloro-3-pyridinyl)-methyl]-N-nitro-2-imidazolidinimine] was monitored in a clay soil for about 1 yr. The 1.2-ha field was located in the central part of the Netherlands (51 degrees 53' N, 5 degrees 43' E). The soil was a Eutric Fluvisol cropped with winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). Tile drains were present at a 0.8- to 0.9-m depth and the ground water level fluctuated between a 0.5- and 2-m depth. All chemicals were applied in spring. None of the soil concentration profiles showed bimodal concentration distributions. However, for each substance the highest concentration in drain water was found in the first drainage event after its application, which indicates preferential flow. This preferential flow is probably caused by permanent macropores that were present in the 0.3- to 1.0-m layer. At the time of the first drainage event, the drain water concentration of each substance was about an order of magnitude higher than its ground water concentration. Thus, the flux concentrations in drain water proved to be a more sensitive detector of preferential flow than the resident concentrations in the soil profile and the ground water.

Riparian wetlands containing springs are thought to be ineffective at removing nitrate because contact times between the upwelled ground water and the underlying microbially active soils are short. Tracer experiments using lithium bromide (LiBr) and nitrate (NO3-N) injected at the surface were used to quantify residence times and NO3-N removal in a riparian swale characteristic of New Zealand hill-country pasture. An experimental enclosure was used with collecting trays at the downstream end to measure flow and concentration, shallow wells to measure subsurface concentrations, and an array of logging conductivity probes to monitor tracer continuously. The majority of added tracer reached the outlet more slowly than could be explained by surface flow, but more quickly than could be explained by Darcy seepage flow. There was evidence from the wells of tracer diffusing vertically to a depth of at least 5 cm into the surface soil layer, which was permanently saturated and highly porous. During dry weather 24 +/- 9% of added NO3-N was removed over a distance of 1.5 m largely by denitrification. The net uptake length coefficient for this wetland (K = 0.08 +/- 0.03 m(-1)) is slightly higher than the range (K = 0.01-0.07 m(-1)) measured in a small stream channel infested with macrophytes. Nitrate removal is expected to decrease with increasing flow. Seepage flow is estimated to have removed only 7 +/- 4% of the added NO3-N and we hypothesize that vertical diffusion substantially increases NO3-N removal in this type of wetland. Riparian wetlands with springs and surface flows should not be dismissed as having low NO3-N removal potential without checking whether there is significant vertical mixing.

Allophanic soils are widespread around the world, but little research has been done on their transport properties. This study reveals the effect of two soil water potential heads and two water-flow regimes of continuous and intermittent flow on solute transport through undisturbed soil columns of Horotiu silt loam (Typic Hapludand), an allophanic soil. Two different methods--breakthrough curves (BTCs) and time domain reflectometry (TDR)--were employed to determine the extent of preferential solute transport in the topsoil. The TDR data were also used to look at the depth dependence of the transport properties. The convection-dispersion equation (CDE) with the appropriate boundary conditions adequately described the movement of both Br and Cl under the various flow conditions. Although no preferential flow was found under the imposed unsaturated flow conditions, the flow of water and transport of solute became more uniform with depth. The results show that both Br and Cl are retarded in this allophanic soil. Retardation values range from 1.5 to 1.9, and, as the TDR data showed, increase from the depth of 5.0 to 10.0 cm. Intermittent leaching results showed that there was no effect on solute concentrations in the leachate following no-flow periods. This suggests that water and solute transport in this soil were either relatively uniform or that transverse mixing during flow was already fast enough to eliminate concentration gradients between regions of different "mobility."

In this study we developed and tested a spray method to visualize bromide water tracer in soil profiles. The method is based on the transformation reaction of a white precipitate into a colored one (Prussian blue) in the presence of Br-. After application of water containing bromide (0.2-0.4% wt.), a soil profile is dug out from the irrigated area and sprayed with a Br- indication suspension containing ferric ion and silver ferrocyanide precipitate. About two hours later, the pattern of irrigation water movement in the soil profile appears due to the formation of Prussian blue complex. We describe the method and demonstrate its use in a field experiment to visualize water flow paths. Since this method might be subject to possible interference from Cl-, a newly designed method with iodide ion as a water tracer and its indication solution containing soluble starch and ferric ion is also presented and recommended for use in soils with high chloride background.

Subsurface drainage systems are useful tools to study chemical leaching in soils. Our objective was to compare the breakthrough behavior of bromide, atrazine (2-chloro-4-ethylamino-6-isopropylamino-s-triazine) and metolachlor [2-chloro-N-(2-ethyl-6-methylphenyl)-N-(2-methoxy-1-methylethyl) acetamid] to tile drains under two fall tillage practices (conventional tillage [CT] with a moldboard plow, and reduced tillage [RT] with a chisel plow) in field plots cultivated with corn (Zea mays L.). Leachate volume were greater in RT than in CT, with no statistical differences. Soil analysis showed that bromide migrated deeper in the soil profile than both herbicides, with little tillage effect. All chemicals were detected in drainage water at the same time and followed an event-driven behavior. Tillage had no effect on atrazine and metolachlor found in drainage water, while bromide concentration peaks were higher in RT than in CT in 1999. Concentration peaks were recorded earlier for atrazine and metolachlor than for bromide. Plots of cumulative relative chemical mass (cumulative mass divided by total mass measured in drainage) as a function of cumulative drainage were mostly linear for bromide, while they were S-shaped for both herbicides. Drainage that corresponded to 50% of relative cumulative mass ranged from 40 to 55% for bromide and from 5 to 28% for both herbicides. Rapid chemical movement to tile drains suggested that preferential flow was important in both CT and RT, and that these tillage practices had little influence on this phenomena.

Drainable lysimeters offer the possibility to integrate heterogeneous solute leaching conditions caused by row crops and transient water regime, and to conveniently measure water and solute fluxes at the drainage outlet. To compare solute leaching behavior in and around drainable lysimeters operating under a transient water regime in potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) fields, parameters of the convective lognormal transfer (CLT) function model were fitted using bromide (Br-) flux concentrations (Cf) measured in lysimeters and from Br- resident concentrations (Cr) measured in adjacent soil cores. Expected mean values Ez(I) obtained from Cr and Cf CLT parameters were equivalent and well correlated (R2 = 0.78). However, estimated median values mu of the CLT function were smaller when derived from Cr (1.05 to 1.28) compared with Cf (1.23 to 2.14). Most mu values were also smaller than previously reported values for a 30-cm reference depth, indicating that 50% of solute mass would leach more readily in these coarse sandy soils. Higher variance and dispersion of Cr compared with those of Cf could be related to a smaller sampling support (sample size/sampling area) in the case of Cr measured by soil coring, or to disruption of solute transport mechanisms in the repacked lysimeter. Retained Br- in the top soil layer after 12 to 17 cm of cumulative drainage was indicated by measured Cr. Neither CLT function simulated well residual topsoil Cr values, indicating that Br- plant cycling or preferential flow probably interfered even though tuber Br- uptake was relatively small.

Understanding water and nutrient transport through the soil profile is important for efficient irrigation and nutrient management to minimize excess nutrient leaching below the rootzone. We applied four rates of N (28, 56, 84, and 112 kg N ha(-1); equivalent to one-fourth of annual N rates being evaluated in this study for bearing citrus trees), and 80 kg Br- ha(-1) to a sandy Entisol with >25-yr-old citrus trees to (i) determine the temporal changes in NO3-N and Br- distribution down the soil profile (2.4 m), and (ii) evaluate the measured concentrations of NO3-N and Br- at various depths with those predicted by the Leaching Estimation and Chemistry Model (LEACHM). Nitrate N and Br concentrations approached the background levels by 42 and 214 d, respectively. Model-predicted volumetric water content and concentrations of NO3-N and Br- at various depths within the entire soil profile were very close to measured values. The LEACHM data showed that 21 to 36% of applied fertilizer N leached below the root zone, while tree uptake accounted for 40 to 53%. Results of this study enhance our understanding of N dynamics in these sandy soils, and provide better evaluation of N and irrigation management to improve uptake efficiency, reduce N losses, and minimize the risk of ground water nitrate contamination from soils highly vulnerable to nutrient leaching.

Extracellular fluid and closely related extracellular water (ECW) provide information on nutritional status in health and disease. Although various methods exist for ECW determination, little is known about their comparability in patients with wasting diseases such as acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). One practical method, the dilution of sodium bromide (NaBr), is used widely in clinical research, although its relationship to other ECW markers has not been well characterized. The present study sought to compare ECW estimates as determined by NaBr and three other methods in 11 male patients with AIDS (mean +/- SD; age, 44+/-12 years; body weight, 64.5+/-8.8 kg; and height, 172+/-4 cm). ECW volumes were determined from NaBr dilution, total body chlorine (TBCl) by delayed gamma-neutron activation analysis, total body water (TBW) by tritium dilution combined with total body potassium (TBK) by whole body 40K counting, and radioactive sulfate dilution (35SO4). All correlations between the NaBr method and other methods were statistically significant (NaBr vs TBCl [r = .91; p < .001]; vs TBW/TBK [r = .76; p < .01]; and vs 35SO4 [r = .89; p < .001]). As expected from previous studies, ECW (L) derived by NaBr provided a group mean (15.1+/-2.2 L) similar to the TBCl method (15.4+/-1.7 L; p = .32), a significantly smaller ECW than by the TBW/TBK method (18.6+/-3.4 L; p = .0004), and a significantly larger ECW than by 35SO4 method (13.3+/-3.0 L; p = .002). Estimating ECW by NaBr dilution was comparable with other research-based ECW methods and, thus, offers a practical alternative for evaluating ECW in patients with AIDS.
