Anti-folate agents had a significant impact on therapeutic treatment plans for diseases such as cancer, and bacterial and parasitic infections, notably malaria. Quinoxaline derivatives showed in vitro anticancer activity and were able to inhibit both the dihydrofolate reductase and thymidylate synthase. Here, we decided to combine the chemical properties of quinoxalines and quinoxaline 1,4-dioxides with those of benzotriazole nucleus with the aim to evaluate the resulting biological properties. Two main new series, including more than 60 compounds, were prepared. In the first one, the benzotriazole moiety was linked through the nitrogen atoms 1, 2, or 3, to a glutaric acid substituent to simulate a glutamic moiety. In the second series, the glutaric acid was substituted with acetic acid moiety to evaluate the effects of steric hindrance. Here, we describe the multistep chemical processes to obtain all titled quinoxalines starting from commercially available diamines. The classical oxidation of selected quinoxalines was unsuccessful, and we have come to an independent synthetic pathway to obtain new derivatives linked to the benzotriazole moieties starting from synthons bearing N-oxide functionality.

An easy-to-prepare chiral CE method for the enantiomeric separation of 13 new amphetamine-like designer drugs, using CDs as chiral selectors, was developed. Sulfated-β-CD was found to be the best chiral selector among the three used (sulfated-β-CD, caroboxymethyl-β-CD, dimethyl-β-CD). The separation of the analytes was achieved in a fused-silica gel capillary at 20 °C using an applied voltage of +25 kV. The optimized background electrolyte consisted of 63.5 mM H3PO4 and 46.9 mM NaOH in water. Several electrophoretic parameters such as CD type, CD concentration (1 − 40 mg/mL), buffer pH (2.6, 3.6, 5.0, 6.0), length of the capillary (70 − 40 cm total length), amount of the organic solvent (methanol and acetonitrile) were investigated and optimized. We report the results of a study based on revealed and stated preference data on choice of Prosecco wines in retail stores close to the origin of production in Northern Italy. Emphasis is placed on ability to reconcile the utility structure of stated preference data with that underlying revealed preference data. We extend the analysis to cover nonattendance of key attributes, such as price and certification of origin, while controlling for the large range of brand effects.

In some countries, it is illegal to drive with any detectable amount of alcohol in blood; in others, the legal limit is 0.5 g/L or lower. Recently, some defendants charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and have claimed that positive breath alcohol test results were due to the ingestion of homeopathic mother tinctures. These preparations are obtained by maceration, digestion, infusion, or decoction of herbal material in hydroalcoholic solvent. A series of tests were conducted to evaluate the alcoholic content of three homeopathic mother tinctures and their ability to produce inaccurate breath alcohol results. Nine of 30 subjects gave positive results (0.11-0.82 g/L) when tests were taken within 1 min after drinking mother tincture. All tests taken at least 15 min after the mother tincture consumption and resulted in alcohol-free readings. An observation period of 15-20 min prior to breath alcohol testing eliminates the possibility of false-positive results.

An analytical procedure for the simultaneous determination in human urine of four thiophenethylamine designer drugs (2C-T series) is reported. The quantitative analysis was performed by capillary electrophoresis with mass spectrometric detection (CE/MS), using 2,5-dimethoxy-4-methylthiophenethylamine-D4 (2C-T-D4) as internal standard. In order to minimize interferences with matrix components and to preconcentrate target analytes, solid-phase extraction (SPE) was introduced in the method as a clean-up step. The method was validated according to international guidelines. The data for accuracy and precision were within required limits. Calibration curves were generated over the range from 10 to 500 ng mL−1 and correlation coefficients always exceeded 0.997. The method was demonstrated to be specific, sensitive, and reliable for the analysis of these derivatives in urine samples. Copyright © 2010 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

An analytical procedure for the simultaneous determination in human urine of several thioamphetamine designer drugs (2C-T and ALEPH series) is reported. The quantitative analysis was performed by liquid chromatography/tandem mass spectrometry and has been fully validated. The mass spectrometer was operated in positive-ion, selected reaction monitoring (SRM) mode. In order to minimize interferences with matrix components and to preconcentrate target analytes, solid-phase extraction was introduced in the method as a clean-up step. The entire method was validated for selectivity, linearity, precision and accuracy. The method turned out to be specific, sensitive, and reliable for the analysis of amphetamine derivatives in urine samples. The calibration curves were linear over the concentration range of 1 to 100 ng mL(-1) for all drugs with correlation coefficients that exceeded 0.996. The lower limits of detection (LODs) and quantification (LOQs) ranged from 1.2 to 4.9 ng mL(-1) and from 3.2 to 9.6 ng mL(-1), respectively.

Discovered in late 1960, azoles are heterocyclic compounds class which constitute the largest group of available antifungal drugs. Particularly, the imidazole ring is the chemical component that confers activity to azoles. Triazoles are obtained by a slight modification of this ring and similar or improved activities as well as less adverse effects are reported for triazole derivatives. Consequently, it is not surprising that benzimidazole/benzotriazole derivatives have been found to be biologically active. Since benzimidazole has been widely investigated, this review is focused on defining the place of benzotriazole derivatives in biomedical research, highlighting their versatile biological properties, the mode of action and Structure Activity Relationship (SAR) studies for a variety of antimicrobial, antiparasitic, and even antitumor, choleretic, cholesterol-lowering agents.

A detailed analysis of Rosmarinus officinalis L. essential oil from Sardinia and Corsica (α-pinene/verbenone/bornyl acetate chemotype) was carried out using GC–RI, GC–MS and 13C-NMR, on the bulk sample or after repeated chromatography. Fifty-eight compounds were identified. The antimicrobial activity of two Sardinian samples was investigated and both exhibited a moderate antibacterial activity. Gram-positive bacteria were more sensitive (MIC 2.5–4 mg/ml) than Gram-negative bacteria. Killing time experiments demonstrated that prolonged times (60 min) are needed to completely inactivate the bacterial inoculum. Copyright © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Pursuing our investigations on 7-amino-2,3-polymethyleneindole derivatives, a set of 7-(dimethylaminomethylene)-amino-2,3-polymethyleneindoles, together with some other aryl or cycloalkyl substituted formamidines, were prepared and tested for analgesic and antiinflammatory activities. Several compounds resulted endowed with one or both of these activities; the indole derivatives 1 and 2 exhibited a good degree of both of them.

Cases of allergic contact dermatitis due to acrylics in the adhesive used to attach the needle to the tubing have previously been reported in pump infusion set users, but never previously due to an acrylic in the plastic tubing itself, as in this case. The presence of methyl methacrylate demonstrated in the catheter of the patient’s own infusion set correlated with her positive patch test results. Since patch testing and chemical-physical analysis was negative for methyl methacrylate in the alternative Cliniset ® microinfusion set, this was supplied to the patient for her insulin therapy and no further adverse skin reactions were reported. Patch testing demonstrated probable cross-sensitivity between methyl methacrylate and other acrylics.
